as a canadian, i approve of this guide to layering but still being able to move. it's very similar to what i do when going skating on outdoor ice in the winter. skin tight layer, insulation layer, windproof layer, have good socks, keep your head covered. apart from investing in a good pair of mittens/gloves, that's basically all you need to do :)

I have a maximum of two layers, namely a Shirt and sometimes a jacket when temperatures are below freezing. It just took 13 years of a u fearing to unlock my hidden potential as a portable heater

I'm about your age and growing up I also remember it not being "cool" to dress warmly. I used to FREEZE every morning, in under 30 degrees F (under 0 degrees C) just because I refused to wear pants or leggings under my skirts in middle school.

Up here in the North (of England) I'd just wear jeans, a t shirt and a jumper (coat if it's extremely cold or snowing or something), and just deal with it XD

When I lived in Paris and then Glasgow I used to have a very similar style : tights and a tucked in tank top, a cute and simple dress, a long and loose sweater (usually the only non black item, maybe matched to my blanket-scarf) and a massive jacket or cape. Finally, my massive boots. Boom, warm, comfortable, sexy, and most importantly adaptable. I'm usually too warm or too cold so I need to be able to strip or burrito myself ten times a day

I got a dress that came with a slip and as someone who refuses to wear trousers and hates bras it has been revolutionary. Fun (or maybe not so fun) fact: I was raised in a similar matter to you in terms of “your clothes can be cute but above all they must be practical” but unlike you I never really complained (I did kinda hate it sometimes but never dared to say anything about it) BUT I went to school by bike with two classmates every day in secondary school and we would usually meet up at one of the girl’s houses and said girl probably should have seen that video because I vividly remember her mother trying to get her to wear a raincoat (it was raining a lot but you aren’t truly German if that stops you from riding your bike) but the girl absolutely refused and tried to reason with her that her blazer is basically a jacket so why add another one! Tbf since she always acted this way she didn’t even have a proper raincoat to begin with so the one her mum offered her was a pretty old one from one of her sisters but still, if anything it made me feel uncomfortable to have to watch that fight especially since I was wearing a maybe not incredibly cute but also imo not hideous either raincoat... in the end the girl won btw or compromised by taking an umbrella I think, which is weird because it makes riding a bike unnecessarily difficult but whatever, at least I wasn’t the one who was completely soaked when we got to school 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also edit after actually watching the whole video: I’ve been using that layering technique for years — and actually in Germany there’s a word for it: “onion look” because you can just take the layers off whenever you want, which is exactly like peeling an onion, right?

The rebelling against coats thing seems common. Can't relate. I don't wear pink now, but as a child I had a giant fluffy pink coat that I'm sure looked ridiculous, and it was my favourite thing ever. Also I'm in NZ, it's definitely not hot constantly or anything, the weather is bipolar, but I am never gonna need that many layers, and even my favourite fluffy pink coat was overkill, at that point it was really me who insisted.

YO but I have more. I have a pair of woolen shorts that I could fold up to cover my stomack too. it. is. the. BEST. And I have a pair of legwarmers that go all the way up to the butt. I LOVE THEM. And omg MITTENS, preferably knitted from alpakka, with double thread, they are sooo warm. And sometimes I wear a headband underneath my hat. That's really warm. Annnddd woolen socks on top of two other pairs of socks! And more thin sweaters on the bottom.
But really, just wear wool and fleece. That's what really keeps you warm. Even if wet. Cotton is cold af. Polyester too. no good. Wool!! And if itchy, just wear cotton under?? LAYERS!!!!!

So I hate how I dress and it's definitely nowhere near as cute as you but somehow up in the North of Scotland I get away with 3 layers only!
And I'm from the South of France and do not like the cold!!!


Basically it goes: 1. t-shirt + jeans 2. literally just a hoodie, maybe the scarf falls on that layer sometimes and you could say the socks are there but eh 3. a (thick, unaesthetic but yet warm) jacket (and like half the time I only wear the scarf with that layer) (these days I stick to my parent's jacket — my mum's lovely rain/overcoat or my dad's old denim jack with wool or something on the inside)
