the way dodie writes about confrontation & tense conversations with someone she's going through something with is really interesting to me, and i certainly feel like it's a recurring thematic topic in her lyrics.
like in this demo, the lines "don’t give me eyes like this is my problem please // folded arms and furrowed brows" remind me so much of monster's "a meter apart, we blankly stare // we shout in our heads, "are you still in there?""
both of these clearly convey the gripping tension between these two people, and i love how she accomplishes that with the vivid imagery of their body language in both cases.
additionally, from her other recent demo, please listen closely: "and so we sit here // and talk in circles // pointed politeness // till we turn purple." I think this also fits into the concept of muted confrontation/conversation ... neither of you really saying what you want to say, like there's an unmovable barricade in your line of communication.
i thought this was really interesting and dodie's lyrics really show her skill as a writer & musician.

that train whistle is the real mvp honestly just heard the song through the window and was like what a bop i shall contribute

This song reminds me a bit of an old relationship with an emotionally manipulative person. It feels like looking back on what happened, knowing that person is out of my life, still being affected by their words but still trying to put a positive spin on things so I don't bum other people out. It's a very specific vibe and if this is what she was going for, well done dodie you nailed it!

So I semi-recently ended an engagement, cancelled a wedding, the whole she-bang. This song SO PERFECTLY explains how I felt in the relationship in the months before ending it... the confusion over his unwarranted jealousy, the desire to help but being “bitten” when I tried. The line that really got me was, “Our conversation walks a fine line/ I search for brows that raise like mine,” always hearing things he’d say to me, and looking around to see if others heard them too, feeling crazy when they didn’t or didn’t seem concerned with what he had said. Dodie, I’ve been a fan for a loooooong time, and you don’t stop ceasing to amaze. Thank you for this.

this demo is really nice. i quite like how each line kind of falls as you sing it. gives it a kind of hopeful and apprehensive vibe, which seems suiting for a song about helping someone who doesn't want to be helped.

2:31 -2:49 is so BEAUTIFUL!! the urgency and intensity rises, with a kind of strain in the voice together with the strings AHHH!! love it dodie!!

I’m not one to vent, though I feel like I need to, especially after having this song on repeat since it’s debut.

A year ago today, I would’ve been persistently dealing with domestic abuse. Shouted at, threatened, blackmailed into sexual activities I made clear I didn’t wish to participate in. I was absolutely terrified. How do you know what to do in this scenario at 18? Or any age?

Many people ask me why I stuck with this person. Truth be told, I don’t know either. I guess I was frightened, or maybe a part of me loved the idea of being liked by an older guy, or maybe I just wanted to see past what he did.

What I do know is that I’m free, and I can only thank artists like Dodie to help me realise that it’s not okay to be somebodies emotional punching bag.

I stand here, a year later, with the wind through my hair, my feet nailed to the ground and my shoulders back. I can get through anything.
