I love how this episode shows there are some things in life that cannot be explained by science. Donât get me wrong, I do love science. But it canât explain everything about our world. I also find it interesting that there IS proof that pinkieâs method worked, we see it throughout the episode. We just donât understand HOW it works. Science is still in the process of discovering new and amazing things, that doesnât mean those things arenât true now. Itâs important not to cross off possibilities, especially ones that have been shown to work.
Actually I'd honestly say that- underneath all her dramatics and exaggerations and OCD, anyway- Rarity is likely the most mature of them. Applejack is certainly second most mature of the six, though.
Surprisingly, I'd say Pinkie is third. I don't know where to rank the rest, but they'd be below Pinkie.
Hello~ Seasoned MLP fan here stopping by. It's a nice way to go back and rewatch them all again.
(Been watching since 2011)
17:06 - Even though you probably already figured it out; but Twilight can't teleport them at this point; she isn't strong enough yet. If she were to try, she probably wouldn't be able to teleport all 4 of them at once and probably would use up/burn up her magic supply and would've became useless. Magic takes time to strengthen in skill and power; like in any tale involving magic.
I love how there are people that are like, "I'd like to visit Equestria". And I'm like, "No. You don't want to visit Equestria. It's an inconceivably dangerous place. You could die literally because a pink pony starts twitching".
Also this is the episode where the show basically tells us all, 'It's Pinkie Pie. Don't question it'. Ok, to be fair, there is an actual lore reason why Pinkie Pie has the Pinkie Sense and why it works. But it's more implied, and not something that comes up until way later in Season 4.
I have really mixed feelings about this episode. The comedy in it is all top notch. It's legit one of the funniest episodes. But the way they write Twilight as a strawman of a skeptic is really off-putting.
Ah this episode I hate how they phrased the moral here. It was an excellent moral, but I imagine to those unused to or unable to look beyond the phrasing, it is definitely a "Religion good, science bad" style moral. And considering the target audience is rather younger...
The episode itself though was fun. Nothing too great, which combined with the moral's phrasing makes this one of my less liked episodes of the show, but it wasn't a bad episode by any means.
...Edit: Why does no one comment on the soapbox scene?
@@MelodySharp. I think that's definitely the intended message, yeah
But I've seen other reactors- and I see it too- get the wrong message, and they definitely could have made it more clear. I like the message they intended, I don't like how it can easily be interpreted in such a skewed, strange way.
âReligion good science badâ I donât think that is the message at all⌠I think the message is that you donât need to be able to explain things just to believe in them. Learn to trust friends and just because you donât agree doesnât mean it isnât very real or very important to that other person.
the moral was supposed to be, look at the evidence around you and don't think you already know the answer, in the show it was badly shown and it looked like and felt like the moral was, the answer you already know is because it makes sense, but not everything makes sense so you can belive things without evidence, the writers admitted it was badly portrayed, and two wasn't strong enough, or at least didn't belive she could teleport all of her friends and herself
The maddening thing is that it was a decent episode that just completely tripped over the moral when it was so close to better one. The slightest tweak makes it pro-scientific method.
Twilight isn't wrong for showing skepticism, but for letting her pet hypothesis blind her to the empirical evidence around her. She spends the episode getting hit in the face with actual evidence and ignoring it because she thinks she knows the answer already, instead of doing an actual honest investigation
Instead the moral turned into mess that looks lije "skepticism=bad" (which the writers later claimed was not at all what they were aiming for).
Sheesh...Pinkie Pie is f---ing sadistic. I know there's not too much going on in that head of hers, but couldn't she at least have had the presence of mind to notice how badly hurt Twilight was? Instead of just smiling at her and telling her she didn't want to ruin her friend's fun why didn't she ask if she was okay? This episode just painted a big red bullseye on Twilight and told the universe to punish her. She didn't stand a chance.
@@ChiSportsNut18 I just think the way the episode handled the lesson could have been done a lot better. I think teaching people not to be over confident and rude just because they donât believe something is a good lesson regardless of who itâs aimed at, but the way that Twilight just decides to believe in Pinkie Sense without explanation doesnât sit well with me
@@jordandwiggins1026 Well the guy who wrote the episode (Dave Polsky) is a very strong atheist himself and was going for a message of believing in the unexplained and not religion. I know that the episode was based on classic Looney Toons slapstick, particularly Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner (Twilight gives Pinkie Pie the scientific nickname of Pinkius Pieus) but when the coyote falls off a cliff or ends up under a boulder it's because he's punishing himself for his stubbornness and inability to learn that he'll never catch the roadrunner and not for trying to observe a person's behavior like Twilight was doing. I love Looney Toons but for slapstick to work a person needs to do enough to deserve it.
The frustrating thing about this episode to me, like you said, is that itâs just extremely mean spirited towards Twilight for the terrible crime of....just being a rational person. It seems like someone just got really mad at an atheist and wanted to write an episode mocking them and punishing them and making skepticism look like something only stuck up pricks do. The lesson is literally that sometimes you should just choose to believe something whether there is evidence or not, but as someone whoâs believed in quite a few things I was convinced not to believe in, or vice versa, I can say that this is a terrible lesson. If you donât believe something ridiculous you canât just choose to believe in it, you have to be convinced to do so. Believing in things without evidence can allow you to be manipulated and cause you to make bad decisions. If Twilight at the end of the episode admitted that based on how much Pinkie Sense was accurate it could be legitimate, even if she canât explain it yet, and that she shouldnât care more about being right than finding the truth, that would be an acceptable moral. She can admit it might be true while still wanting evidence to fully believe in it. But her just suddenly deciding to believe in it when she was absolutely convinced otherwise ten seconds before just makes no sense, and it is a harmful lesson for kids to learn.
@@jordandwiggins1026 The way I see it, she just wasn't unlikable enough in the episode. To her scientific mind, the "Pinkie Sense" didn't make sense; I agree. But the episode seemed to want to punish her right from the moment she chose not to believe in it. She was doomed as soon as she said "two coincidences in a row are more likely than twitchy tails that predict the future". She was more dismissive than skeptical and that was her worst crime. She wasn't mean enough or foolish enough to deserve her punishment. That and Spike could've done more to get Twilight out of danger's way if he was really her companion. The way that the episode immediately decides to punish Twilight and the misunderstood moral makes this episode my least favorite. Faust and Polsky have done better.
I find this episode funny in the same way I find Looney Tunes funny. But yeah they really botched the handling of the lesson here. If Twilight accepted that other people believe something she doesnât believe in, at least that would be a decent lesson, but having her just believe in it herself with no logical reason that makes sense for her character, that just seems like the lesson is that you should believe in things regardless of whether thereâs any explanation just because you feel like it, which is a stupid moral. Even if that wasnât the intention, most kids are going to interpret it that way and thatâs what is frustrating about this otherwise enjoyable episode
@@silentshadows2963 It seems like most of all the focus of the episode was on punishing Twilight. She wasn't unlikable enough to deserve what happened to her. Eg: Tell her there was a swarm of bees or try to get a crippled Twilight out of the way if he thought she was in harm's way. I hated Spike and Pinkie Pie way more than I did Twilight in this episode. I think Dave Polsky and Lauren Faust forgot this was supposed to be a kid's show when they made this episode and that he wasn't writing for South Park.
If you like this episode and think I'm overthinking it that's your right but what I can say is that the show got better after Faust left and Polsky's writing changed for the better after his two season one attempts. And sorry if my message is getting too long.

"if I'm not hurting anybody, what's wrong with It?" This people don't live in caves they have computers and are spreading fake news like it's cancer. And yes it's dangerous.
Pseudoscience is dangerous, conspiracy theorist are dangerous etc
Why do you want to believe in things that are clearly nonsense in the first place?
do you know why people no longer live in caves? do you know why we have technology? Because people have stopped believing nonsense. They started doing things scientifically and figured out how the world really works.
That is why there are schools so that everyone is educated and does not believe in nonsense. Technology don't work with believes they work with knowledge.
@@derbettnasser4027 well if your opinion is that you can call whoever you want a stupid just because they believe in something that you don't, then Yes, I'm not respecting it

I just wanted to share my opinion in a comment section in YouTube, that's all.
â@@tebiaas6051 Some people believe the earth is flat. are they allowed to believe that? Of course they are, but the rest of the world will make fun of them for believing in such stupid things. It's just how it is, i'm sorry if you are triggered by that.
@@derbettnasser4027 oh wow, now I see, you are a stupid that doesn't respect other peoples opinions or beliefs, thank god you make me see that so quickly, now I don't have to waste my time discussing with you, I expect you to get out of that bubble of ignorance but if you don't, I don't care anyway because is your problem, meeting you was not nice and I expect to not talk to you or someone like you ever again, have a good life.
â@@tebiaas6051 first of all it's the opposite of knowledge. Believing in things that are not real is childish and stupid, secondly, do you know how many people died because of stupid believes? Religion is a good example.
an example I can think of that's related to this is, let say you have a friend that's super into astrology. There are YouTubers and individuals in the world that loves meditating with a crystal and read tarot cards. As long as they are not hurting themselves or others, and even if there's no science or evidence to back up anything they say, then we shouldn't be disrespectful to either their hobby or their personality. Skepticism works when people are being tricked or hurt but it shouldn't be used to put others down. You can either chose to believe in it like they do or not, play with it or not. But I get what you're saying, I highly value facts and scientific evidence but this episode is more about respecting differences than about beliefs, and sometimes it's true that people are more open-minded to things when it comes from a friend than a stranger.
@@derbettnasser4027 firstly, it's pinkie pie, don't question it, and also, last i rember there are many things in our own world that people choose to believe in, even tho theirs no proof to back it up, it just makes sense to some point, there's not much of a difference here in this episode, and twilight isn't saying you HAVE to believe in such things you don't understand, she's saying you can CHOOSE to believe in them or not, tho at the same time you should always respect others believes and opinions even if you don't fully understand them, and let's face it, I'm sure many out their have believed things that their friends have said even if they make little to no sence just because they make sence (I'm not really sure how to exsplain that last part but still)
@@silentshadows2963 she literally says "I am happy to report that I now realize there are wonderful things in this world you just can't explain, but that doesn't necessarily make them any less true. It just means you have to choose to believe in them, and sometimes it takes a friend to show you the way."
If you have to BELIEVE, it means that there is no evidence. unless this "friend that show you the way" has evidence of his claim, you should not believe. No evidence no reason to believe, it's that simple.

1 likeâ@@tebiaas6051 "because they believe in something that you don't"
1 likeNo i'm talking about things that are clearly nonsense. if you want to believe that 2 + 2 isn't 4 but 24, i gonna call you stupid, and also if you believe that the earth is flat.
@@derbettnasser4027 well if your opinion is that you can call whoever you want a stupid just because they believe in something that you don't, then Yes, I'm not respecting it
3 likesThat doesn't mean I'm in a bubble, It means that I don't want to waste my time fighting with a stranger in internet
What About saying what I think is being a drama queen? And in case that I'm being one, Yes, is because of what you said, even if I think in something that is false, if I'm not hurting anybody, what's wrong with It?
@@derbettnasser4027 no problem, I know that the earth isn't flat, but isn't in my right to make fun of the people who think that, and that I can't do anything to stop the people who do it, I already know how the world works and that I can't do anything to change it. I just wanted to share my opinion in a comment section in YouTube, that's all.
3 likesâ@@tebiaas6051 Some people believe the earth is flat. are they allowed to believe that? Of course they are, but the rest of the world will make fun of them for believing in such stupid things. It's just how it is, i'm sorry if you are triggered by that.
3 likesâ@@tebiaas6051 Sorry but can you please read your own text and get the irony please.
1 like"you are a stupid that doesn't respect other peoples opinions or beliefs"
The same thing you are doing right now ;) You don't respect my opinion.
"I expect you to get out of that bubble of ignorance"
Talking of bubble, you are the one that doesn't want to talk with me because i have a different opinion, that means your are in a bubble ;)
"meeting you was not nice and I expect to not talk to you or someone like you ever again, have a good life."
Why are you such a drama queen? Because i said it's childish to believe in things that are obviously wrong?
@@derbettnasser4027 oh wow, now I see, you are a stupid that doesn't respect other peoples opinions or beliefs, thank god you make me see that so quickly, now I don't have to waste my time discussing with you, I expect you to get out of that bubble of ignorance but if you don't, I don't care anyway because is your problem, meeting you was not nice and I expect to not talk to you or someone like you ever again, have a good life.
1 likeâ@@tebiaas6051 first of all it's the opposite of knowledge. Believing in things that are not real is childish and stupid, secondly, do you know how many people died because of stupid believes? Religion is a good example.
3 likesI don't see anything wrong in believing whatever you want to believe

1 likeIn the universe of MLP it makes sense but this Morales are supposed to be relatable in the real world. In this case i don't think it does.
4 likesan example I can think of that's related to this is, let say you have a friend that's super into astrology.
4 likes@@derbettnasser4027 firstly, it's pinkie pie, don't question it, and also, last i rember there are many things in our own world that people choose to believe in, even tho theirs no proof to back it up, it just makes sense to some point, there's not much of a difference here in this episode, and twilight isn't saying you HAVE to believe in such things you don't understand, she's saying you can CHOOSE to believe in them or not, tho at the same time you should always respect others believes and opinions even if you don't fully understand them, and let's face it, I'm sure many out their have believed things that their friends have said even if they make little to no sence just because they make sence (I'm not really sure how to exsplain that last part but still)
13 likes@@silentshadows2963 she literally says "I am happy to report that I now realize there are wonderful things in this world you just can't explain, but that doesn't necessarily make them any less true. It just means you have to choose to believe in them, and sometimes it takes a friend to show you the way."
5 likesIf you have to BELIEVE, it means that there is no evidence. unless this "friend that show you the way" has evidence of his claim, you should not believe. No evidence no reason to believe, it's that simple.
That wasn't the message behind this episode at all! I mean no offense but i think you might have misunderstood the lesson in this episode
