I recently built a video server with an E5-2690v4 and Windows 11 eats 100% of four cores for literally hours at a time doing stupid shit in the background. Thankfully this CPU has 14 cores, so it doesn't impact performance that much.

If you can find a way to kill the defender service and use a 3rd party light AV instead, it will probably run much faster. Defender uses an enormous amount of system resources for no reason.

Those were barely XP capable. I remember the whole shitshow.

System requirements is not minimum requirements.
System requirements denotes hardware that gets updates and verified, not the abosulte bare minimum.

Don't forget the Win-Win collaboration behind the scene between Microsoft and Intel to force users to buy new CPUs and avoids customers complaints.

@@GGigabiteM yep, it is exactly what i am using right now. Allthough they clock a little bit higher, Win 11 is a pain in the ass. Furthermore mine can t boot over USB, so i cannot install Linux. So i have to modify Win quite a lot, to get some useful experience. Otherwise Defender, Update and Win Store alone uses around 70% CPU performance when idling, even if it didn t do an update at all.

@@GGigabiteM yeah, those are complete shit. I have 2 of those "bottom of the line computers" not because I really needed them, but because I wanted to try them out, and wow they're slow. I have this old $100 refurbished Dell laptop that apparently was made in 2011 but refurbished in 2013 I'm guessing because that's what the BIOS date shows, and this thing is fully capable of running at pretty decent speeds, around the same as those $200 to $300 cheap "modern" laptops. It's ridiculous. Even a Pentium 4 beats those slow bottom of the line CPUs. I'm about to upgrade this Dell laptop to 4GB of DDR2 RAM and a 128GB SSD so it'll run even better, and it's only around a $30 upgrade.

Different scenarios. Hardware is more than capable these days. The old hardware is too good for many people, which means people are not buying PCs.

@@GGigabiteM this small touchscreen laptop and a bigger non touchscreen laptop I have, both Lenovo laptops, have a dual core Celeron 1.6GHz CPU and 32GB of flash storage with the bigger one having 2GB RAM and the smaller one having 4GB RAM. They are slow. I have an old Dell OptiPlex desktop with a Pentium 4 single core 3.06GHz CPU and it blows away the performance of the 2 laptops. Modern hardware is embarrassingly slow, lol, and the touchscreen laptop was originally $300 too which would've been a damn ripoff if it wasn't touchscreen. Thank goodness it was on sale for around $130

I remember a few GPU didn't function correctly in Vista but are perfectly fine in Window 7 or XP. Few people did try weird ways to get them to work like rewriting the drivers, manually installing them, used different drivers intendent for different GPU, force Vista to ignore errors of GPU, etc. Forcing Vista to ignore GPU errors seems to fix some of the user problems. Unfortunately that wasn't me and stick to XP until window 7 came out.

@@Valyssi my gf has an hp laptop with a 1.1ghz celeron that came with windows 11. she paid it 320€ and it is almost unusable... my desktop pc with a core 2 quad q8400 and a gtx 780 is 1000 times better (i paid it 120€)...

If that was their intention it didn't work, the biggest hurdle for most people is TPM, which excludes many older but perfectly adequate (performant) CPUs while allowing much slower CPUs as long as they're modern.

windows 11 on core 2 quad q8400 (w/ 8gb ram and gtx 780 3gb) works really good for almost everything (except heavy gaming, but i'm still able to play gta online on it with zero lag)

Running W11 on a i7 10750H with 16GB, 512GB NvMe SSD and RTX 2060 6GB GPU and it works quite well.

I've gotten VERY lucky finding older high end laptops for cheap. My best score ever was a Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th gen for $10. It was the absolute highest specced unit with an i7-8650U, 2560x1440 screen, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. Someone had just thrown it out.

Previous that was another Lenovo with a 4th gen i7 and dual GTX750s in SLI.

@@DanTDMJace And do what with it? Windows XP has been out of support since 2014, nobody makes drivers for it, and hasn't for almost 10 years. Since it never supported UEFI, it won't run on anything that doesn't have UEFI-CSM. You may be able to get it running in some painfully slow compatibility mode, but won't have any video acceleration.

@@nialldaly7108 Yeah, you can put Linux on them, but modern Linux is getting to be just as bloated as Windows. You can run an older Linux distro, but then you won't be able to run a modern web browser without compiling your own and running into dependency hell.

I've gotten to the point that I just toss anything that can't have at least 4 GB of RAM, and that's starting to be not enough. It'll run Linux fine, but not Windows. Once Windows starts trying to update itself, it will lock up trying to use all available memory until it finishes, which can literally take days. Once the update process starts overflowing into the pagefile, it drastically slows down. This has been a problem since the Vista days, and every subsequent version of Windows has had the problem.

@@hannahighmark8036 agreed, Vista was not bad at all, I have an old hp dv2000 laptop that came win xp Home, changed the HDD, made 3 partitions, cloned the origonal to part 1, installed vista on the second and it worked well, left it there till win 7 came out and installed that on the 3rd patrition, all 3 work ok though some drivers for the remote did not work but everything else did. Then win win 10 came out I replaced Vista with win 10 and all worked well again with 2 Gigs or ram. I have since removed that HDD, installed Linux Mint21 on an 250GB SSD and it sings, Remember it is nearly 18 years old now.😊

@@GGigabiteM Well, they will still run Linux or Chromium OS which is not too bad, but in general I agree, Got a win 10 upgradable Laptop new which came with win 7, It did upgrade to win 10 automatically but now there is no room to upgrade win 10 to latest ver of win 10 and has only 32GB emmc storage, and will not run win 11 by default. It is Ok to take to cafee and read e-mail and surf the web and edit the odd office document.

The fact that Windows 10 doesn't require much higher hardware requirements than 7 makes your theory falter. The fact that Windows 11 has modern Celerons in its whitelist that score less than half as much as a 7th, 6th... even a 4th gen i5, not to mention i7 makes your theory crumble.

And yes...using a pc with 2 gb ram and slow hdd was the reason why win vista run so bad on some pc.

I have one Lenovo laptop ( rizen 5 cpu) that can't run windows 11.
On windows 10 that laptop can run some games at decent setings and good image quality.

@@iceangelx22I have a System with a Ryzen 1700 and RX 5600 XT. Just needed Rufus to Bypass the CPU requirements as I already had Secure Boot and TPM enabled. IMO, 11 is miles ahead of 10 and feels like a substantial improvement (especially now that AMD fixed their jackshit OpenGL drivers they had before) coming from a Linux user.

@@hannahighmark8036 From what I read, Microsoft also had their fault in this. They put a "Windows Vista Capable" logo on every PCs. And because they also didn't classify which edition Windows Vista can run, most of the consumers were mad because they can only runs on Windows Vista Home Basic which lacks Aero and Media Center. The drivers, yes, but also mainly the entire new kernel is just too new for it times and people still using Windows XP back then. Also, you mentioned that you had a gaming PC, which is extremely beast and expensive back then, we are talking about 2006 here, a PC back then costs an arm and an leg, so no one could afford a powerful PC that only needs to run Windows Vista

No the higher requirements are mainly due to them wanting to support security features but regardless they could support those features on computers that support those hardware features and then don’t support it on ones that don’t kind of how windows 10 was and those people could still get windows 11 albeit with less security features. I also don’t think they’re trying to avoid a “vista situation” because nowadays anyone with an E8400 or Q6600 from 2007/08 can run windows 11 VERY comfortably with an SSD and ram upgrade. Computers back then didn’t last as long as they do now. Back then people were trying to install windows vista on their old Pentium IIIs which is extremely bad for vista... The Vista era isn’t really comparable to the 10/11 era..the landscape and hardware situation is completely different now. So either way it was a very very anti consumer and poor decision to make that will lead to many many more than good enough windows 10 machines without updates in 2025 and tons of Ewaste.

the reason vista was a shitstorm was cuz it was the last time windows has a complete rewrite almost. everything was new and different so drivers where screwed or incompatible. windows 11 is not any more advanced than windows 10. there is almost no difference other than it steals more data/ I bet the only reason it has such absurd requirements are to boost stocks on oems because 10 is going to die in a couple years and the "computer illiterate" will all run to buy a new pc one they are told windows 11 wont run on their old hardware. this will cause a boom in sales and that's what share holders are after.

Clearly Microsoft has not seen all the Celeron laptops tat are now flooding my local computer shops. They come with Windows 11 pre-installed. I own two and they struggle playing YouTube videos on 2 speed.

@@generallyunimportant I understand what you are saying. However the issue wasn't that windows was jank at the time... It was that driver developers (third parties outside of Microsoft) had no idea how to build for the new kernel, refused to make functioning drivers, or refused to digitally sign their drivers so that they worked with the security features that were added in Vista.

Driver issues were less to to with Microsoft and more to do with manufacturers either being behind schedule or refusing to make drivers all together.

Side note: if somebody can drive a car, I don't call them car literate. They can just simply use the car and know nothing about it. Same goes with a computer in that there's a difference between people who can just use the computer, and people who know what they are doing.

My argument points towards that basic computer literacy includes learning how to maintain it and perform basic diagnostics/problem solving, and that this is something everybody should take some time to learn because even a little knowledge (and willingness to sit down and think about it without panicking and getting upset as I've seen many people do when something doesn't work) can go a long way in this field.

People are so quick to give up when they don't understand something that they basically forfeit any chance they have of learning anything about it.

nah, even win10 had very loose minimum requirements, its mostly security features that are what's limiting compatibility, especially the TPM 2.0 requirement, which only became common in 2016

Back in the day I had a gaming computer with Vista on it an it worked absolutely flawlessly.

The people who complained about Vista were running it on a potato 🥔.

I've been using Windows 11 with my i7 4770k, 16GB RAM and GTX 1060 build since Windows 11 came out and surprisingly my experience is much better than when I was on Windows 10. My DPC latency is much better and games are more smooth. I used Rufus to bypass the TPM and secure boot requirements.

Ut it can’t boot since a file in system 32 is missing, forcing it to boot causes a BSOD, it has a 2nd gen i7 and i think 6 or 8 GB of DDR3 RAM, never ran bad or lagged when it was working before

I have Windows 11 on an AMD Athlon X2 4000 which is 64-bit, and the PC has 3GB RAM, uses MBR and has a Legacy BIOS.

I actually dont remember the cpu, prob its the pentium, 2 gb ram, an intel hd graphics, ~900gb hdd in total, and Windows 8.1

my school has like 2 laptops and a computer for the staff. the student's it hall doesn't even exist bc the computers haven't been used in like 10 years

@@HXG_ it's true in a good handful of schools but not every school.
I imagine it would be based on how many times a computer gets destroyed by a student or if the school has a really good budget to work with.

Although 8GB of RAM is very small in 2023, you'd ideally want at least 16GB for performance and headroom.
In my case, I have 128GB of RAM in my own PC.

As for the GPU, it's fine for most modern games at medium settings, maybe high if the game isn't too resource hungry. You get the idea.

I don't know what specific Ryzen 5 CPU you have, though. But mine is a Ryzen 9 3950X @4.2Ghz, way overkill for gaming but I do a lot of projects such as rendering where my GPU cannot render the project properly and other tasks. I assume it might be a workstation CPU, not meant for gaming maybe but not underpowered.

Either way, like I said in an earlier comment the school I worked at for a bit did have students being destructive especially with one stabbing a monitor with scissors. The monitor is probably only worth maybe less than a hundred dollars, could you imagine if the school bought out thousand dollar monitors? It simply doesn't make sense in this case.

This is basically my computer trying to run Windows 8

in my school, the teacher decided to install tiny11 into the old 2nd gen i3 machines, if you're lucky, you work with 2gb of ram and a dying SSD, if you're unlucky, you work with 1gb and a 360gb HDD

i studied on a school with a tech support course, almost all the PCs where random donations from parents and students that needed to get rid of their old PCs
we had 775 Celerons, Pentium 4's, Core 2 Duos, we even found a Pentium 4 478 socket with 256mb and Windows XP, at least 5 in the entire room (with about 35 PCs) had a Pentium G2020 and 4GB DDR3
we only got decent PCs in the last year i was studying there, and boy, what an upgrade, we went from 15+ year old hardware to I3's from 10th gen with 8GB DDR4 and 256GB NVME SSDs
the other room got a slightly worse, but not bad upgrade, 7th gen I3'swith 4GB DDR4, 1TB HDD and a GT 710
compared to what we had before, that was gold

In 2007 when i graduated from high school, there were still many computers around in the 450-550 Mhz range. Thankfully they were only made to run windows 2000 and not XP or god forbid Vista RTM. Those PCs would be approaching 10 years old, which nowadays wouldn't seem so bad, but at that point these computers were many times slower than other mainstream new PCs. Also CRTs were still a norm and there were even random computers around using model M keyboards, just out of the fact that that's what they had available. :D

It makes sense, students that do not care about school property tends to, you know destroy things including computers, once I worked for a school and apparently a student stabbed a monitor with their scissors. (Half the screen, literally, still worked lol)
You can imagine the school budget would go out the window if they bought good expensive stuff only for students to destory them, it's just more ethical to cut costs to avoid having to replace expensive components.

My old school literally had computers with Core 2 Duo E4600, 2gb ddr2 and 80gb hdd. The Core 2 processors were good back then and I think the hdd slowed the system down more than the cpu but still really week even for a school computer.

@Aron Amir sometimes when you try to fix your broken windows(like fixing your windows bootloader) grub gets broken and you need to reinstall grub, if we forget about that you cant access your linux files without custom linux filesystem drivers(i used a btrfs one that i used to use with my dualboot before i wiped everything and installed fedora) or browsers. For short you dont need to worrt if you dont break stuffs easily i dont use my pc as i should and i never got a thing that cant fixed. I even installed custom filesystem drivers and everything was worked likr a charm.

MY RECORD IS 7. XP, XP-64, VISTA, 7, 8.1, 10 & 11. ALL 64 BIT EXCEPT XP. 3 HDD, USED A GA-H61 WITH A INTEL I7 3770 USED MACRIUM TO LOAD THE OS BOOT FILES.

@MacCraker i didn't try just vista and 10 alone, but i guess not, since the problem started after i installed windows 10.
XP doesn't support UEFI/GPT (as far as i know) so i suppose you have good old BIOS/MBR. I don't think windows 10 has a problem with that

Has anyone here tried to multi-boot windows vista, 7 and 10 in UEFI mode? I tried and my results were:

- Vista and 7 can dual-boot without problems
- 7 and 10 can dual-boot also without problems
- BUT, with the three installed, windows vista can't boot anymore

I think it has something to do with the windows 10 bootloader, but i couldn't find any information about why it can't load windows vista. My solution was to install the Vista bootlader alongside the windows 10 bootloader, but that means every time i want to boot into Vista, i have to go to the BIOS (well, UEFI) to manually select the boot option. Maybe enderman can figure out what's happening...?

It is really clunky though. Clover loads all the other bootloaders + act as a bootloader for Mac. GRUB loads Linux after choosing it from Clover, while Win 10 BOOTMGR loads Windows 10 and thanks to EasyBCD also loads WinXP. A bit of a nightmare to set up though lol

Obviously, multitasking on a 17 year old single core 3.06GHz CPU is rough, if not impossible, but for regular browsing and watching videos, it's still pretty decent.

You probably need to get your eyes or brain checked or something, because I never said anything about the Pentium 4 being anything good. I said I skipped over the entire P4 era and went straight to the Core 2, which by using deductive reasoning, means I was using AMD all through that time. From 1999-2006, I was using exclusively AMD hardware because I wanted nothing to do with Intel's smoking hot P4 crap. It wasn't until the 2010s that I started playing with old P4 hardware just to see how bad it was, and it was.

@@guily6669 The P4 3.8 wasn't "totally fine", it was so terrible that the Celeron 450 from the Core 2 era could almost match it in performance, while being 1.6 GHz slower at 2.2 GHz.

The Pentium DC E2200, at the same clock, just with two cores wipes the floor with a Pentium 4 at 3.8 GHz. It could also be heavily overclocked and leave the P4 in the dust. It wasn't uncommon to get 1 GHz+ overclocks on those chips via bumping the FSB from 800 to 1066 or even 1333 MHz. I used to have an E2200 running at 3.33 GHz for years, never gave me any trouble.

AMD was doing better back then until intel unleashed core 2 which was a complete annihilation until like Ryzen 3rd gen for me cause in my opinion the first Ryzens were only to catch intel but not really anything amazing at least for gaming...

Ps: maybe we could have had much better CPU performance by now if AMD was able to keep pushing intel but basically intel could just sleep and do whatever for way more than a decade without AMD being able to even scratch 😕 (but at least we got way more cores than the common crazy old quads probably thanks to AMD and now its inverted with intel giving even more cores).

@@GGigabiteM I had a PIV 3.8ghz and was totally fine the problem sadly is not long after it's CPU bottlenecked for gaming in just a few years, the intel 775 socket lasted for what felt like an eternity but for me golden age of PC was with my I7 2600K from 2011, it was so many years ahead that could take many gens of GPUs without being a huge bottleneck and cost around 260eur including the crap cooler for the best desktop CPU...

I used my 2600K until like 8 months ago and only cause it burned 1 core but incredibly still works by setting 3 cores in the UEFI\bios. It was heavily used all those years at high voltage on a air cooler at 4.9ghz which is a incredible jump from the stock 3.8ghz max turbo...

@@JanuszKrysztofiak Yes, but Core 2 was great and at the end had a 400+MHz FSB which is not like any modern P3 derivatives that have only a 100 MHz FSB. Which is disappointing.

Pentium 4 and the Netburst microarchitecture were a huge blunder and a dead-end. They were power-hungry and meant for very high clock rates (5 GHz and such) that would never materialize due to physical limits been met earlier than expected. Alas, what followed Pentium 4 evolved from Pentium 3.

@@GGigabiteM Yes P4 was bad enough, but I worked on then a lot of people's P4 celerons, that were truly disgraceful enough already, But people would always get several 1000 malware and virus (true) and a lot of times I had to just format & reinstall, b\c like that they were so helpless, that you couldn't even install a malware remover. I also remember when Pentium's started hitting 3.0ghz that the joke was 5.0ghz CPU's were in the future. But then Athlon64's were smoking Pentium4's. You could have an Athlon 64 stock at 2.2 or 2.4ghz that would obliterate a P4 @ 3.2ghz in gaming. So everyone thought clockspeeds weren't the future. THEN HT came and dual/quad cores came and everyone was just positively sure 5.0ghz CPU's were a meme. So, that's what we used to joke about.

Now, here I am with a 5900x that boosts to 5.1ghz with just Curve Optimizer and the Boost cranked up. I never saw these days coming, honestly.

I knew it wouldn't be mine, though. It was a Pentium 4 2.4ghz that used RD RAM. While all the other PC's were using the typical SD RAM at 400mhz, I was using RD RAM @ 533mhz.

It was SOOOOO expensive. It's just what came in that old Dell Dimension 8250 or 8350 or whatever it was. This was early 2000's, I believe. Huge upgrade from the Celeron 500mhz before that and the Pentium 100mhz before that.

CPUs ALL sucked until Pentium 4 came out with HT and then AMD64 came out and was fast... then came AMD64 x2's (the first dual cores). That's when things started to get interesting. From Pentium 4 HT and onward.

With a 1 core/1 thread CPU, it was hard to open the Steam Overlay with a game open lol. I remember getting a Core 2 Duo after my Athlon 64 3400+ and was like "what? The overlay can open without slowing the game down?"

Im still sitting on quite a few of old p4's in my garage. My first pc was a amd k6. Soooo painfully slow compared to today's systems. I still use a few p4's (as linux boxes) around my network. Printer support box and my firewall namely. Don't need much horsepower for that for a small home.

@Black Pill Radio Early versions of Windows NT (3.1-4.0) were much more problematic than Windows 9x ever was.

Windows NT prior to Windows 2000 were missing all of the creature comforts that Windows 9x users enjoyed. Things like Direct X, PnP, Device Manager and disk defragmenter didn't exist. Driver support was also very poor, leaving system integrators limited in what they could use hardware wise.

The drivers that did exist were also frequently buggy and/or missing features.

Many of the problems with Windows NT 4.0 weren't fixed until SP6a, which was released almost three years after NT 4 originally shipped.

NT 3.1-3.51 were even worse. They had high system requirements for the time, and were pure 32 bit operating systems in a time of 16 bit software. DOS software wouldn't run at all, and Windows software from 3.x would run a whole lot slower due to primarily running 16 bit code.

Remember the terrible Defrag program that would restart every time something wrote anything to the disk? And it'd take like 4 hours to get past even 10%.

When Windows ME came out, you could copy the system utilities back to a 98 machine, the ME defragger was FAR better, one of the few things good about that terrible OS.

I was at college when the P4 came around, and i have to say it was the worst era for me, They processors just get hot for the sake of it, no matter how many fans it had in. I used a basic P4 system for windows 2003 server, for my MCP lab stuff. All it was doing was hosting Active directory, and the fans were going 100mph!

I worked as a IT technician in the Windows 9x era. It is not something i look back at with any nostalgia at all. Blues screens, general unknown hang situations, dodgy drivers, always insufficient RAM and sloooow hard drives. Spent a lot of time waiting for something to eventually and hopefully finish. Everything changed with Windows 2k/XP and SSD's. Made every one's life SO much better...

You didn't miss anything. Pentium 4's were horrible monstrosities that shouldn't have existed.

The Netburst architecture was so bad that the Pentium 4 didn't overtake the Pentium III-S 1400 until it reached 1700 MHz. My dual PIII-S 1400 can keep up with a Pentium 4 HT 2800 in everything but memory bandwidth.

I avoided the entire Pentium 4 era and went with AMD instead. Didn't go back to Intel until the Core 2 came out in 2006/2007.

I was born around DDR was used ddr2 was my childhood ram so does DDR3 DDR4 is when I was leaving childhood to adulthood. My first was DDR3 and 2nd was DDR4. DDR5 will be my next build.

I found this out firsthand when my laptop suddenly started having its CPU work when playing YouTube, as VP8 decode was not supported by the Radeon 5470. I was pretty irate then too, as it demolished battery life.

In theory. In practice, that cpu will ruin that too. I had a Pentium 4 524, and a 631. With a GTX 650. That gpu served me well as a hand me down. Back in 2014 everything was h264. It still could not play 720p video. The moment I got a core 2 the CPU usage went to 2%. Even with full gpu acceleration it could not play video.

I've only ever had two motherboard with integrated onboard graphics chipsets, and they were Socket 7 era boards and therefore terrible graphics performance. So we always switched them off in the BIOS and installed a dedicated PCI or AGP card.

I still have my P5Q-E tucked away in its box. Great Core 2 Duo motherboard. The only P5Q board that had on-board graphics was the P5QL-EM micro-atx with Intel X4500. I don't believe any of the P45-chipset based P5Q models had on-board graphics.

@@saricubra2867 Agreed. I got i7 2nd generation from 2010 on my office Linux server and it runs so fast. I also noticed the gap betweem modern PCs (including laptops) and 10 year old ones is not that great. I write this on 2013 Intel i3 with 8Gb RAM and SSD drive wth Windows 11 and runs like a new PC. I see very little difference as far as daily usage is concerned. Maybe it is Windows 11 that uses the 64bit processor better and SSD drive that speeds up file loading, but nonetheless it is amazing that 10+ year old multicore processors can run a modern OS wihtout a lag. I think Windows finally caught up with 64bit and multi-core processing and only now we can see their true power. My 14yo Dell with Core 2 Due, 4GD RAM and SSD drive has no issues running Windows 11 and playing YT videos on full screen. It brought new life to my old laptops 🙂

@@szobione I avoided Windows 10 for my new Intel Core i7-12700K system. But it's still a good OS, currently installed on a decade old Intel Core i7-4700MQ laptop (performs like a desktop i7-2600K or i7-3770). The perfomance gap between the Pentium 4 and the first Core i7 is crazy, meanwhile between my decade old laptop and current desktop PC isn't as big.

I just installed Win11 on an old Dell laptop from 2009 with Core 2 Due (64bit) processor with just 2Gb memory and SSD drive and lo and behold, it works like a charm. I am quite amazed it works so well.

@@shototodoroki1977 Yeah, why not. I just upgraded 2 laptops from WIn10 to Win11 both of them from 2013. Win11 does very well on them, but they have 8GB RAM and SSD drives. They work like new, much better than on Windows 10. You can download 2 simple programs to stop all the telemetry and a lot of useless shit Windows does and system works much smoother.

@@Marsvy Yeah, good idea. I have a Proxmox server with QEMU on i5 processor and 16Gb of RAM with SSD drive and it runs Windows 10, Windows 11, Slackaware Linux as file/print server and OpenSuse 15.5. I can start all 4 VMs at the same time and they run well. VMware is a good idea. I use virtualization since 2010 and love it.

@@Marsvy I got a lot of PCs from new ones to older ones. The oldest is from 2009 and runs an early version of Win7, but it has Centrino single core, so it is not suitable for newer Windows versions. But it runs Linux well. The one I plan to install Windows 11 is from 2012 with 4Gb of RAM and Nvidia card with Celeron Dual-Core. It runs Windows 7 well, so I think when I install a new SSD drive it should run on Win11.

Claiming to support such a trash hardware will limit you in implementing new features while having to spend more money to make all the updates compatible with that hardware that is not currently used with any new software (btw, they've introduced the registry keys for bypassing all that hardware checks just for you nerds, to prove yourself that those restrictions are not really needed at the moment. But remember that you aknowledge the risks of a sudden incompatibilities introduced with another windows update)

And "Ventoy" gets rid of the need to overwrite the flash drive every time and to think about technical details (for example, such as MBR and GPT) and gives confidence that copied images of mainstream OS will be able to run as on old PCs without UEFI , as well as on modern PCs in full UEFI mode.

I did actually get XP to complete setup on an i7-8700k, after modifying the install ISO many times, including adding my own ACPI, SATA, NVMe and USB drivers, but no matter what I tried it refused to detect any input devices once it got to the final stage, even a PS/2 mouse

You CAN use Rufus, just have to manually set it to use MBR and HDD compatibility for older BIOSes. Set it to use BIOS booting too, and not UEFI. Rufus also has the Win11 bypasses, just like Ventoy.

yeah i used to do this with windows XP, when i had it installed on Pentium 1 systems. It did help quite a bit funny enough, also turning off a few services that are not really needed helps too. The Pentium 1s could boot windows XP with out any trouble, the 256mb did help mind.

win 10 and 11 can fetch graphics drivers as part of windows update, which includes legacy drivers such as the radeon featured in this video, and nvidia cards that require the 470xx and 390xx legacy drivers.

They don't make a Windows 11 for PowerPC currently, so that would be the bare minimum required. It is possible to run Windows on Arm processors and Windows used to support PowerPC, so if IBM succeeds in making POWER9/POWER10 a thing, we might see that come back. But it's not likely you'll see it outside of special versions.

I never understood why they keep making slower/cheaper chips that still run as crappy as some several gens back. I've never had a good experience when a family member buys a pre-built, as they always go cheap and get the Celeron model. I got a brand new Netbook for Christmas in 2014, and it not only had it's 64-bit Atom CPU artificially neutered to only run 32-bit Windows 7, but it also ran several times slower than my Pentium 4 (Prescott) build from back in 2006. Even using PAE, I couldn't get the netbook to see or use more than the 4GB that was hard-addressed in the Atom CPU and/or chipset with an 8GB stick of DDR3.

Windows Update does work and I’ve never had an issue updating Windows 11 to a new build.

I think the 661 is socket 775 so it supports ddr2 and I saw some guy use rtx graphics with a Core 2 quad; another 775 cpu

GPU as long as it fully supports DX11 and on paper can support DX12, and has a WDDM 2.0 driver (for reference, the latest driver for a 920MX, a 2016 low end gpu with 2 GB of DDR3 memory, is WDDM 2.7), will be supported.
