Spike getting wings wasn't nearly as divisive as Twilight getting them. Most were happy with it, and quite a few people I've seen consider this their favorite part of season 8's first half. I certainly was pleased. Spike has come a really long way since the show started. He's earned this.
This is a great episode. Seeing Spike in this kind of situation is interesting. I like how Smolder explains what's going on. Spike having wings if fantastic.
I have a theory that Spike should have experienced the molt before the Gauntlet of Fire episode. The reason why he is such a late bloomer is that he was raised by ponies that knew absolutely nothing about dragons and Spike didn't receive proper care while growing up
@@Narrator007 I have a theory myself in that the reason spike is such a late bloomer is because he's not getting proper nutrients in his diet. Dragons have sharp teeth and can grind diamonds to dust indicative of carnivores with the ability to crack bones wide open but also Spike seems to be able to eat a herbivore based diet there by Dragon seem to be omnivores of the extreme variety. It's just that Spike doesn't seem to be getting any meat in his diet most likely from fish and those giant eels from Goblet of Fire.
This is another one of my favorite S8 episodes and Spike episodes. Not only is it entertaining, but fascinating too. I was always interested in learning more about dragon lore and I’m glad that this particular gave us another lesson on the subject of dragon growth.
It was cool to have Smolder explain to us that the molt effect was the natural way for dragons to age and that dragon greed was completely different from it. One of my wishlist items for this season was being able to see more mythical creatures and I was glad that it came to be with the debut of the Roc. This creature (among others) is one that I haven’t heard of since I was young, so it was great to have it being brought up to my attention after so long.
On the subject of Spike finally getting his wings, my first experience wasn’t all that was cracked up to be. Why, because of a massive outbreak of leaked images based on S8. No one was safe from running into spoilers after some nutcase hacker got their hands on unofficially released footage of these S8 episodes. Before we knew it, images of Spike with wings had spread like wildfire and no one was safe from being massively spoiled on this surprise. I was one the unfortunate ones that got spoiled on this and it was not happy to discover the situation with all the leaked episodes being posted on social media. This is why I called S8 “the season of spoilers” because of this unfortunate event.
But anyway, I was happy that Spike got his wings after all this time. This episode is top tier as one of the best Spike centered stories this show had to offer in my opinion (right up there with “Gauntlet of Fire”).
This is definitely one of the stronger episodes in this first half. I love the callbacks to Secret of My Excess, and it's a great puberty lesson that would go down more obviously than Cutie Marks.
PonyBro: it takes a lot for a man to be adorable Me: dude have you looked in a mirror? Any man who smiles genuinely can look a little bit adorable if it wasn’t for the sports industry making all athletes look mean and grumpy
You know what, I really like this episode, that Spike got wings finally, but, I have trypophobia, and you know, it was really hard to watch episode, to watch that stone scales, to watch Spike straching them... Sheesh... But after watching this episode ebout 3 times, now I dont feel any discomfort, so, cool!
This honestly might be my favorite one-off episode of season 8. The suspense and buildup to Spike finally getting his wings was outstanding, especially 17:55 to 18:43. And everything involving the roc was just epic.
0:08 "Can changelings... Do they like, go in a cocoon?" Does a cocoon of light count? If so then yes, when then transform to good. For about 5 seconds.
I think the reason why it took Spike so long to enter the molt has to do with the magic Twilight used to hatch his egg in order to get into magic school.

I'm pretty sure that's actually just a style choice
