I will never understand why people seem to hate the idea of small YouTubers becoming big and famous and having a large audience. That's the whole point of YouTube. It's built around these motivations.
It's what I find to be the "counter-cultural contradiction" which is the result of the contradictory goals of being an established culture and being against the mainstream culture. This gets resolved by either having the culture fizzle out, becoming an element of the mainstream culture, or become toxic.

Quite an interesting take you had on Vidcon. I've thought about attending it for some time and your comments about it have given me some more interest. Sadly though, I probably won't be able to venture there until I start to get more money. For channels like mine, we have events like Coaster Con and Holliwood Nights that act in about the same capacity as Vidcon, but it 's more attuned into those who enjoy roller coasters and are fluent in "coaster talk." It costed me around $2k in total to attend this year's Coaster Con at Santa Clarita and Anaheim, CA. I'm expecting to have a similar cost to attend next year's Coaster Con at Philadelphia, PA.
I was visiting California during Vidcon and I didn't realize until a day before. I was going to Hollywood and Disneyland with my cousin and other family. Kinda regret not going but at the same time, I was happy with my family.

Hey Emp, since you're very interested in cases where Youtube randomly starts weird tests without telling anyone I want to tell you that I've recently started to notice that like and dislikes in people's videos and comments start getting rounded up and the last digits are just zeroes and sometimes exact amounts of likes and dislikes persist through different videos. Has anyone noticed it or is just something with my Pc/server/internet?

Very insightful. I always wonder every year what it would be like to go to VidCon one day even as a small fry creator with a 1 in a million chance of people actually recognizing (hey, the possibility exists), and this gives me a good idea of what to expect more than any of the “VidCon videos” from even people I like. Maybe it’ll happen one day? Apart from the money, the only thing turning me off is the possibility that any of the people I’d REALLY want to meet might not go because of the controversies that have happened at previous VidCons, or they feel disenfranchised or unwelcome by the event. Not to mention, them giving a grant to one of the most horrible people on the site, Steve Shives was a big turnoff. But who knows?

I kind of disagree with the smaller channels having an advantage here. The day me and my fiance went, that saturday, we went in character, corresponding with out channel, with business cards ready. Neither of us got anywhere. Unless you fork over the cash for the overpriced industry and creator tracks, you're kinda fucked with just the community track. Also, the fact that the day we went also had a costume contest going, us showing up in character probably didn't have as much of an effect as it could have.

theodd1sout success does not fill me with hope, it is a further demonstration that effort and quality aren't promoted on this platform. All of youtubes promoted "animation" youtubers don't really animate, their shit looks like it was made in go animate. Nearly all actual animators have left because of people like theodd1sout success. Narmak is like the only actual animator still on youtube that I can think of that posts regularly by actual animators standards and gets any views. And theodd1sout also met success by having jimmy fallon mixed with tumblr post tier """humor""" so he could meet the most appeal, while anyone doing something interesting or dark or deep will get a channel destroying controversy the instant they begin to reach success.
Saying his success is cool is like saying it's awesome that anyone can pick up a camera and film themselves eating and shitting and get an audience and become a millioniare in a few years. For channels like mine, we have events like Coaster Con and Holliwood Nights that act in about the same capacity as Vidcon, but it 's more attuned into those who enjoy roller coasters and are fluent in "coaster talk." It costed me around $2k in total to attend this year's Coaster Con at Santa Clarita and Anaheim, CA. I'm expecting to have a similar cost to attend next year's Coaster Con at Philadelphia, PA.

I always wonder every year what it would be like to go to VidCon one day even as a small fry creator with a 1 in a million chance of people actually recognizing (hey, the possibility exists), and this gives me a good idea of what to expect more than any of the “VidCon videos” from even people I like. Maybe it’ll happen one day? Apart from the money, the only thing turning me off is the possibility that any of the people I’d REALLY want to meet might not go because of the controversies that have happened at previous VidCons, or they feel disenfranchised or unwelcome by the event. Not to mention, them giving a grant to one of the most horrible people on the site, Steve Shives was a big turnoff. But who knows?

All of youtubes promoted "animation" youtubers don't really animate, their shit looks like it was made in go animate. Nearly all actual animators have left because of people like theodd1sout success. Narmak is like the only actual animator still on youtube that I can think of that posts regularly by actual animators standards and gets any views.

Not every YouTube channel has to be some profound, grandiouse masterpiece to be admirable in its success. In my opinion it's all a matter of perspective. PewDiePie arguably puts even less effort production-wise into his video than James does, yet people will praise his channel until the cows come home.
