Maybe luna sometimes gives ponys nightmares to teach them a lesson or help them face their fears

Yeah, Celestia did once say to Luna, "you flit around, giving ponies lovely dreams-" so maybe Luna controls all pony dreams.

She's a "Night-Mare".

Its kinda funny because my middle name is Luna, so I get to have the same name as one of the coolest ponies in Equestria!

Rewatching this now, since Sawtooth has theorized Luna didn't always walk in dreams,

So you know how people have nightmares because their brain is processing something that's happening to them in real life? What if Luna gave Scootaloo nightmares because she was trying to help her deal with her fears? Maybe she didn't mean any harm, and she was just doing her job, but after she realized that tactic just wasn't doing it for Scootaloo, she resorted to actually meeting her in her dreams to talk to her about her problems. It would make sense that she would try her best to not interfere too much with the pony, since that might be a bit too much work to go around all night and meet anyone who had been having issues lately in their dreams. She also did that with Sweetie Belle. She didn't meet Sweetie Belle until she had had a few nightmares about her problems, and further proof that Luna may have caused some of the nightmares is that even when she met Sweetie Belle in her dreams she showed Sweetie Belle her fears, and the result of her actions. While she didn't use this strategy with Apple Bloom, that's a bit of a different story in my opinion. Apple Bloom's nightmares where not caused by Luna, but rather by Apple Bloom herself. She was stressing over something that she really had probably no need to worry much about, and I think Luna might have almost been able to relate to that. Let me explain. Before Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon, she was very jealous of her sister. I don't know about you, but if I had an older sister that I was jealous of, I probably wouldn't have gone to the extreme of trying to kill my her and take over the world. I'd probably just tell her and solve the problem that way. I'm not blaming Luna or anything, don't get me wrong, because as we see in one of the MLP comics, she had a little help from those strange midnight creatures in her transformation. But, then again, Luna has been shown to be very self-conscious about her transformation, to hate herself even. So, she probably subconsciously felt like it was more her fault than the midnight creatures', and she felt like she was overreacting like Apple Bloom was, and that's why she decided to visit her in her dreams instead of just trying to use the strategy that I talked about earlier in this comment. Although she may not have known why exactly (because, as I said, she may have just felt subconsciously that transforming into Nightmare Moon was her own fault), I think that Luna may have just felt that it was better to visit Apple Bloom in her dreams first thing. Anyway, that's just a theory, but it took awhile to come up with, so I hope that you will get the chance to read it, BronyNotion!

The comics actually had several issues going over the backstories of several villains, including Nightmare Moon when she was first banished. Once there, she finds a race of creatures who create/control dreams for ponies and learns from them (or rather one is trying to be her friend and is helping her to mess with ponies to create ill will towards Celestia) Nightmare is Physically transported into Celestia's head accidentally; what's funny about this is by doing so she inadvertently performs the dreamwalking duty Luna becomes known for. She finds Celestia's darkest nightmare, her guilt on having sent Luna away and distraughstrengthens Celestia's resolve of having banished Her.

in one of his recent videos its clear that luna or nightmare moon wasn't dream walking until after nightmare moon was destroyed but if she did that meant celestia would of became daybreaker

When I thought about night mare moon's name . I thought from my point of view that it means : "mare of the night for night mare,moon means who raises the moon. So in conclusion it means that nightmare moon also means: mare of the night who raises the moon. Hope you like my theory for nightmare moon's name. I think parts of Nightmare Moon still manifest in Luna, so it's pretty reasonable to say Nightmare Moon controls nightmares of ponies, while Luna's duty is to set ponies free from their nightmares, thus internally battling Nightmare Moon, her own living nightmare, in a sense.

Or, yknow, how Luna literally means moon in several different common languages.

Luna doesn't give nightmares, the dreams are a ponies own fantasy. If the pony has a nightmare, Luna protects them from the nightmare so it won't affect them in the real world. But sometimes, she might not be able to protect every single pony in equestria from there nightmares, like when she couldn't protect scootaloo.

Also , her name was supposed to be Selene/Selena or Discord . Hasbro didn’t want to get sued because they mentioned a Celebrity’s name . And name Discord would explain Luna’s doings in Giggle At The Ghosties . But then , they decided to go with Luna , because it means “Moon” in several languages (Russian for example - луна)

Maybe Luna give them nightmare when she goes into their dreams to help them to face their fears

I enjoy this, and would say this would be a great idea that Luna controls dreams, only able to convert them into nightmares if I am correct. Though I do believe it is because of lazy animators.
It is possible that the animators, for MLP FIM, just simply did not wanna figure out how to make trees horrifying without caring the kids and causing some major herd of angry parents. As well as how many times they just don't wanna do the background and get away by doing so

Maybe because Luna can walk in dreams, she can pull elements from dreams out into reality as well. After all, in an attempt to win over Rainbowdash, she changed into something aligning with Rainbow's greatest dream: To join the Wonderbolts and be seen as the best flier in all Equestria. Seeing faces on things at night isn't uncommon, and is often found in nightmares. If Nightmare Moon can pull elements from dreams and Nightmares and apply them to reality, it makes sense how she was able to do many of these things that the mane six experienced on their way to the Elements of Harmony. More over, she knew the things that would make the ponies hesitate: Falling from a cliff, Evil Trees and monsters, She knew how to get the river serpent upset and thus block the river, the thorn in the Manticore's paw, Rainbowdash's desire to be the greatest flier in all the land.

All the Princesses have the ability to go in to dreams, the longer they stay inside, the more their influence is impacted in the dreams, effecting what is seen and each Princess has their own influence to make their presence known. Luna had more control and can stay inside without her presence know, if she wanted to.
Luna's name is a literal translation for Moon.

Twilight: The time when night and day is balanced.
Shimmer: A gleam or shine
Sparkle: A twinkle or shine

Both were Celestia's students... what if Sunset should've been Twilight?

I actually have a different theory. In Spanish, Luna means "Moon", as many people know. And in Greek and other mythology, the moon gods usually have names like Selene and Luna. But what most people don't realize is that Selene actually means crazy, and this is also a secondary meaning for Luna as well in some places. Also, the moon gods really ARE crazy, manipulating people down on Earth for their own selfish gain like most gods do. So as the name Luna reflects how she has power over the moon, I don't think that it was any mistake that is was her who went insane. I think that Luna's name not only reflects here power over the moon, but her destiny as Nightmare Moon as well. To manipulate her subjects and take complete control... like a selfish god.

Maybe it has more to it, you see, when Luna was banished, no pony performed her duty of helping ponies in their nightmares, when she was no longer Luna, ponies had nightmares and no body comforted them there, hence 'Nightmare Moon', that's what I think.😀

A lot of the time people see or interact with things that could happen in real life, except in their nightmares. I believe that Luna was using this trait to let scootaloo learn about what she was doing and how to avoid it.

Okay, you may not have read the comics, but here's what I know.
Yes, Luna can control dreams.
But not by herself. 
According to the comics, Nightmare Moon was caused by "Nightmare Mist", which started taking over the dreams in the comic, giving at least the mane 6 nightmares. It is unknown whether Luna can cause them by herself, though probably not, but it is possible that she gave them all nightmares, because of being under the influence of nightmare mist. It's also possible that Luna had a nightmare herself, which made her become Nightmare Moon, because it was shown that Rarity (who even became Nightmare Rarity), had a dream that her generosity wasn't being accepted anymore. That means Luna might of had a dream where even her sister shunned her for being lesser than Celestia, and she got jealous.

But that's just my theory, mixed in with some comic canon.

The fact that the nightmare trees resemble those on Scoot's nightmare may be neither a coincidence nor implying Luna is still causing nightmares. The nightmare trees are like any other nightmare monster -- figments of the dreamer's imagination and fears. Because Luna is a dream walker, she is acutely aware of what others fear, having observed countless dreams and nightmares. As Nightmare Moon, who is also an alicorn capable of using magic to produce illusions, it would be strategically advantageous to utilize her experiences of observing nightmare monsters to scare the main characters away -- and it would have worked if Pinkie Pie hadn't possessed an unique outlook on fear as something you can use to have fun.

I think Luna might be adopted. It never mentioned Luna's and celestia's mother or father.

So there can be a chance Luna and Celestia's are just two ponies that were there for each other and developed a bond like sisters.

This would explain why they are so different from each other.

Celestia could have easily found Luna as a filly and raised her like a sister.

This can also be pointed out as why Luna turned evil.

She was abandoned as a filly by her parents. She could have felt unloved by her parents and could have troubled with this for a long time, but Celestia showed her that she was loved.

But with being princesses. Celestia became absorbed in work and had less time for Luna. Making Luna think that Celestia no longer loved her. And with the ponies of equestria, not loving Luna like they love Celestia, this could have caused problems that hit her hard.

In sleepless in Ponyville, Luna destroys the headless horse in Scootaloo's dream, which shows that she can control the dreams. Also, in the second to last episode of season four, she comes into Tia's room after the vision stating "You know as well as I that it was not a dream, but a vision." So that could mean that Celestia took over the dream walking for a thousand years while Luna was on the moon. This also could mean that the ponies have their own dreams, and are helped when the dreams become nightmares.

there's a theory that Celestia gave Luna the power to watch over dreams and aid in them to make her feel more important after Twilight well i guess "saved" Luna or after the episode "Lunar Eclipse" (I think... The Halloween episode) to make her seem more endearing to her new subjects.

Luna means 'moon' in Spanish (which most of you probably know) so 'nightmare moon' can also be called 'nightmare luna' which give me a theory that is probably a little wacky but maybe just maybe Luna was still showing a little bit of herself when she was nightmare moon. It possible that she knew what was happening all that time and saw it and even had something to do with the name but the twist is she wasn't controlling herself and (the what I'm gonna call) the darkness was so all that 1000 years she knew EVERYTHING but couldn't control it, even though she tried so she feels it's her fault nightmare moon came to pass and you can tell she's sorry and actually had not wanted it to happen so this MUST make you wonder 'why DID she do it?' well I guess this answers it but then again the show already ended like somewhen between 4-5 to 9 months ago and I'm probably wrong and then again this is JUST a theory. 😉

I always thought of the name Nightmare Moon is represented by Nightmares but I look and thought of the name better it could also Night|mare Moon as a mare of the night! And Luna raises the moon! For me both opinions seem logical!

honestly I think she gives them nightmares and dreams to balance the dark and light. or maybe the ponys fear was to strong for her, or maybe just maybe she's giving the fillies a lesson on how you have to take on ur own fears. what if??

It's probably suppose to be that Luna sends nightmares to teach lessons and end fears. Let me explain: In Scootaloo's nightmares she was afraid of what was in the woods, but not in rl because what she was really afraid of was not showing bravery in front of Rainbow Dash. Luna helped her solve these nightmares after a while and explained why she was having them, the nightmares were solved after that and Scootaloo was embracing her honest feelings.

Here's what I think.
In the episode of My little pony where Luna turns into nightmare moon is the same episode is where she kind of starts to stress alot. It is also the same episode where Luna and the other princess switch jobs. Luna takes care of everything in day time and the other princess, Celestia , takes care of everything in night. If Luna was to still do her job, however stressed out, she can end up losing control of the dream and herself. She had to smile and laugh and so on with the list. Then, when Luna looks into a mirror she sees herself as nightmare moon. Luna also "known" as nightmare moon sees that as a opportunity to cause trouble. Luna takes care of night. Night is where is you can get nightmares. Candence on the other hand was not in the episode. If Candence is a Alicorn, Celestias neice, and a Princess should she or should not know about this. Luna then after the battle between the sisters, was banned to the moon. There is more to this topic but I will tell more in another comment.

Why did Celestia have to banish her to the moon? If Celestia can raise and lower both the sun and moon for a thousand years why couldn’t she just lower the moon (like she‘s been doing at dawn for the last thousand years) and be like, “Luna, dude, chill.” It’s as simple as that! She literally could’ve lowered the moon right then and there!

here's my theory about Luna: Luna can control dreams and put things in dreams but she can also stop bad dreams when she is reformed

The trees are probably just an aftermath. And remember a "force" of darkness took over Luna, Luna isnt darkness.
I think her confidence is because she knows she has a place and they need her, kinda like that one episode.

Based off of Season 5: Do Princesses Dream of Magic Sheep, Luna can control dreams, walk in them and create one shared dream. Also, she created the Tantabus which gave her and the mane six NIGHTMARES so...

Maybe when Luna entered the dream the dream transformed into her memories to, which is the cost of dream walking. When you dream it is just a manifestation of your memories. So when Luna enters their dreams her memories also manifest, creating a nightmare. But she can fix both of of the problems of the dreams of the pony learns a lesson from Luna. This is maybe why we only see Luna dream walking when there was a problem with the CMC, because other wise she would be transforming and dream into a nightmare with no lesson for her to teach therefor creating a everlasting nightmare. So yeah...

You know why I think Luna is SOOOO much younger than Celestia? Well, when she was on the moon, she didn't age. I mean, if she did age, and she looked the way she did when she came out, then she must have become Nightmare Moon as a filly! A theory I have is that some of Luna's dark magic still is free roaming.

In scoots nightmare, Luna was walking in her dream, possibly to convince her to confront rainbow dash. Also, Luna was in her normal state. It may be likely that whenever Luna enters a dream, that the dream changes to a nightmare.

Maybe Luna (aka nightmare moon) would have used her dream walking abilities keep ponies awake by giving them nightmares. I mean, she would probably have done that if celestia had not banished her to moon.

Luna thought fighting Changlings was a nightmare but that was JUST her personality, and when transformed into a nightmare the blue blob somehow knew her personality... although Luna made the blue blob she isn't giving the ponies nightmares herself.

I don't think Luna gives ponies nightmares on purpose. I personally think, since it's similar to what the tantabus did, i think she was able to transform the real live into a nightmare. That's what she did. Everybody loves the sun, and having it taken away is pretty much a nightmare for everypony. For celestia it was losing her sister. So yeah, nightmare moon pretty much just made their lives a nightmare, but i don't think she had access to the dream world then or is the cause of the nightmares now

Maybe there's a degree of dark power in the world that has to be expended to be dispelled, or else horrible consequences occur and the safest way to do this is to shunt the power into people's dreams, creating nightmares. Luna's job is then not only to create the nightmares in order to keep the dark power at bay, but to patrol the dreams affected so as to ensure that they don't get too out of control and traumatizing hence shutting Scoot's nightmare down when she could no longer handle it. This would give a good reason for a kind, altruistic ruler to be doing something one would otherwise consider somewhat malicious. Since creating nightmares is relatively harmless, it's also possible she was allowed to resume this duty while in exile although being corrupted and evil, she might have been more inclined to let the content of the nightmares get somewhat excessive.

There's a rumor going around that Luna will willingly change back into nightmare moon. But I'm still spectacle about this, because she's been guiding Sweetiebelle and Scootaloo so that they don't make the same mistakes she did. Scootaloo and nightmare never told their older sisters (I know rd is not her sister) about their fear of letting them down. And thought sweetie belle to not allow living in her older sister's shadow to cause sweetiebelle to sabotage her sister. Plus, I'm expecting an apple bloom dream episode.

Luna doesn't give dreams or nightmares the ponies give themselves the dreams and nightmares of what they have problems of or excited 😊 of. Luna just tries to save them from their nightmares and tries to give them advice of what they should do to solve the problem. That's what Luna does.

What if there was an evil entity that creates nightmares that has always been a part of the ruler of the night so when Luna dreamwalks she is actually fighting an unseen entity to free a pony from it's grasp as it gives them nightmares. Perhaps this is also a part of her corruption as every night she must face this evil entity by helping ponies overcome their nightmares so maybe it had an influence on her that helped her not only transform into Nightmare moon but also it affected her with an evil thanks to the rage and jealousy already within her. When she was defeated this evil entity just returned to the dream world where Luna would still have to continue to face it.

I want to clear things for celestia.... Celestial isn't a familiar word? Celest is a french word which i think means a sun light (Un celest du soleil... makes sence). ia at the end is for tia which tia is shorter of the word, tiara. Celestia's parents is the Queen and King of the galaxia (RUMOR?!). I think they knew it would be the oldest and took care of the sun. I wouldn't name the oldest Luna because personaly Celestia seems like a old child's name and Luna seems younger. Anyone agree?

The trees i'm pretty sure was just a quick and easy way for the development team to reuse a previous models and save some time and money.

Well, in my country , Romania, Luna means the moon, so, for me, the name is clear. Luna's ability is to rade the moon so all have sense!

Luna probably did that because apparently, in the series, Luna can't exactly control dreams. In real life, YOUR brains create random dreams. And mainly at times your brain takes memories or if you can't remember, something is taken from your memory and then replace it perhaps.

i think that .. when the elements defeted NMM not all of her left.. i think that NMM will restore herself with nighmares so she goes to ponys dreams and makes it a nighmare fedding herself so she can be powerfull and come back .. i think that becouze that single line luna said in scootsdream "But they Must be faced Or The Nightmares will continiue" does luna knows somethink that she hides from all the ponys? AND i heared that in S5 Nighmare returns .. soo maybe she restored herself? We'll see!

OMG I just realised something! About the trees... In the mlp app it's about getting rid of nightmare moon, and along with rocks and stuff which u have to clear away for more space to build stuff, are those exact same scary trees! And it's cuz of nightmare moon that u have to clear all the crap away!

1:04 remember granny smiths story "when nightmare moon vanished not all her dark magic vanished" if thats true what's left of it can be giving nightmares because luna never turned into nightmare moon after season 1 episode 1.

I havn't yet watched the video but I think that the secret behind luna's name is that she had her destiny written already! She was named Luna because she was destined to go to the moon and was also destined to become nightmare moon! Luna is a mare. She brings the night. Put it to together. The word nightmare and its meaning comes from a long old legend about a horse (or a mare) that walked though your dreams,at night.

It's more than likely. She can walk within dreams. Why not influence them? And people forget- Nightmares are dreams.

Is there any explanation to why Celestia, Luna, and Cadence all have “one” name instead of two combined ones, like fluttershy or Applejack? Is it because they are royalty? But then again Twilight went by one name too. Or is there some other part of their names I’m missing, or is it just a thing of chance when you name a filly?

In the Fiend ship is magic comics the fourth one has nightmare moon in it and explains what she did while on the moon, she found the makers of dreams 'The dream team' she befriended one and by the end of the comic corrupted them, she forced them to create nightmares for every pony in equestria. Perhaps Luna is giving nightmares on purpose so that she could redeem herself to the citizens by coming in and saving the day.

Well we know Luna wad jealous of her sister because everyone was up during the day ans enjoying the sun while everyone slept at night. (Should I be saying everypony?) Anyways, the nightmare thought makes sense with this knowledge because what do we do when we have a nightmare? We wake up. She could have been trying to get ponies to wake up and bask in her glorious night with her nightmares before she was banished to the moon. I think they way she uses it now is to try and help her citizens like Celestia does. She would read a dream, see a problem, then show consequences of certain actions, as we saw in For Whom The Sweetie Bell Toils.
Just my thought. Hopefully I didn't open the floodgates for hate towards this. Though I am open towards more ideas, or if anyone sees any flaws in this.

It is meant to be that nightmare moon does give nightmares to ponys. The thing is before she is transformed she makes a deal with discord. That if she ever got transformed, discord would take over the role of giving nightmares to ponys. Discord agreed because he would be able to leave his frozen state. When the main 6 are made discorded they take over the role of nightmares. Luna was a powerful alicorn without the help out the anger and hate inside of her. Nightmare moon was strong enough to send and create nightmares but the main 6 aren't. Applejack and rarity create the nightmares, pinkie pie adds death cupcakes into them and packages them up ready for Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy (they deliver) . Twilight implants the nightmares into your brain and makes sure they stay on your mind.

What if Luna gave Scootaloo nightmares because she was trying to help her deal with her fears? Maybe she didn't mean any harm, and she was just doing her job, but after she realized that tactic just wasn't doing it for Scootaloo, she resorted to actually meeting her in her dreams to talk to her about her problems. It would make sense that she would try her best to not interfere too much with the pony, since that might be a bit too much work to go around all night and meet anyone who had been having issues lately in their dreams. She also did that with Sweetie Belle. She didn't meet Sweetie Belle until she had had a few nightmares about her problems, and further proof that Luna may have caused some of the nightmares is that even when she met Sweetie Belle in her dreams she showed Sweetie Belle her fears, and the result of her actions. While she didn't use this strategy with Apple Bloom, that's a bit of a different story in my opinion. Apple Bloom's nightmares where not caused by Luna, but rather by Apple Bloom herself. She was stressing over something that she really had probably no need to worry much about, and I think Luna might have almost been able to relate to that. Let me explain. Before Luna transformed into Nightmare Moon, she was very jealous of her sister. I don't know about you, but if I had an older sister that I was jealous of, I probably wouldn't have gone to the extreme of trying to kill my her and take over the world. I'd probably just tell her and solve the problem that way. I'm not blaming Luna or anything, don't get me wrong, because as we see in one of the MLP comics, she had a little help from those strange midnight creatures in her transformation. But, then again, Luna has been shown to be very self-conscious about her transformation, to hate herself even. So, she probably subconsciously felt like it was more her fault than the midnight creatures', and she felt like she was overreacting like Apple Bloom was, and that's why she decided to visit her in her dreams instead of just trying to use the strategy that I talked about earlier in this comment. Although she may not have known why exactly (because, as I said, she may have just felt subconsciously that transforming into Nightmare Moon was her own fault), I think that Luna may have just felt that it was better to visit Apple Bloom in her dreams first thing. Anyway, that's just a theory, but it took awhile to come up with, so I hope that you will get the chance to read it, BronyNotion!

2: when her evil self got defeated by the elements of harmony, her evil self (a shadow that causes nightmares) came out of her but as luna comes to the small poneys rescues in there nightmares, this shadow is trying to get back into her to hide and take over her again. Luna said that line in scootaloos dream because she knew if she kept comeing to the rescue in ponies dreams the shadow would get closer and closer to her so she tries to narrow the nightmares down so theres less chance that the shadow will get to her
