This gave him a very tense style that gave him the job of lead guitarist in one of the first "difficult" blues bands in Louisville, Conception. I started out as a folk singer playing in clubs around town like The Arts of Louisville House. This club later became Changes Unlimited and then Kaleidoscope, the first psychedelic nightclub in Louisville, Ky. I spent a lot of exciting nights playing in these clubs with Jay Petach, the engineer of this CD, when we were members of Oxford. The most memorable evening was when we opened for Frank Zappa and spent some time talking to him about the music business. After I left Oxford I started a group called Conception and that's when Mike and I started playing together. At the urging of a friend, I went to see a band in Nashville at a club called Briar Patch and saw, what I thought at the time, was the best live band I'd ever heard. Their name was The Allman Joys, which later became the Allman Brothers Band, and I knew my musical journey would change. After the release of ABB's first album, Mike and I disbanded Conception and looked for some new musicians to be a part of this Southern rock sound. We went to a club called Zanzibar and explained to Richard, during one of his breaks, which we had in mind. He was immediately excited and we started looking for other local musicians to finish the band. Although we went through many different lineups together during the five years of Leslie's motel, I believe the group on this CD was LMB at its peak. Before I get into the other three fantastic musicians here, I think the story of naming the band needs to be told. When we started practicing in the garage at Dixie Highway in Louisville, we would walk past Leslie's motel every day.It was rumored to be a house of "bad repute" (mostly for soldiers coming and going from Fort Knox) and from how the sign was lit up, it means they're open for business. The sign became a topic of conversation in rehearsals regularly until one day Mike suggested we call the band Leslie's Motel. After a lot of laughter we decided it was as good a name as any and the name was left! In these first rehearsals we did several allman brothers covers and it greatly influenced our writing. Ray Barrickman and Jay and I went to the same high school and had a band called The Specters. This group later became the second generation of Oxford. Ray and I once wrote a song together that we performed at senior hall. It was supposed to be a tribute to our "wonderful" high school experience. Instead, it was a move towards the school's principal and staff, memories of smoking in the boy's room, suspensions for cutting school and too long hair augmentation. We almost got kicked out for that song, so Ray and I "had a past"!! At the time of writing these notes, Ray was also a singer at Oxfords only a nationally released single, so he was an excellent addition to the LMB. Paul Hoerni was a third-generation Oxford drummer with Jay when they recorded most of their recording. He also played drums in several outstanding bands around town and had this Butch Trucks feeling somehow. Jay and I spent time with Butch at Changes Unlimited while playing concerts with his band The Tiffany System, before he was at ABB. We both recognized similarities and talent. Paul joined the band and we started out as a fiver. The Louisville Windmill Club became our home base to discern our ideas, and the Belle Starr Saloon in Buffalo, New York, became our home away from home. We played a circle of clubs from the far north to Boston to the west to St. Louis and south to Florida.
