As I understand, this was originally supposed to be the only season (before Nickelodeon suddenly ordered more), so it would've been pretty darn cruel to end on a cliffhanger.
The backstory of Tarrlok and Amon was interesting but it was also hard to watch, with the bloodbending activity going on. What a terrible life those brothers had. Yes, I said “had,” meaning they are in fact dead.
The finale had me on the edge of my seat, from the confrontation with Amon to Korra unlocking her airbending, plus her spiritual connection to her past lives. Really good reaction!
The shocking reveal of who Amon really is and that was some fight scene Korra put up with him!
It took a lengthy fight for Equalist followers to realize that the very person they thought would give hope to non-benders was exposed as the fraud he really is.
And Tarrlok did everyone a favor to atone for him and his brother's schemes. What a season finale!
While I don't know if it's confirmed or not, but there's a chance that if the creators knew ahead of time that they would get to do more than one season when they started this show, then Korra might not have gotten her bending back until at least the next season.

I love season 1, the way Amon and Tarlok are revealed and the way they go is just wow for a nickelodeon show

The thing with a kids show is that, even if a character really dies, they can't exactly show it on screen
