i think this is how activation works: 1. you input a key 2. it checks it against a local algorithm 3. if it passes that algorithm it will send it to the server 4. the server then checks if it's a valid key that would explain why the windows 98 key was rejected instantly (the algorithm changed) but the windows xp key took a couple of seconds again, i don't know how it really works, it's just a guess

I'm 99% certain I successfully activated Windows 10 Home on a laptop that wasn't connected to the internet a few weeks ago! No wifi connection at that point and no network cable anywhere to be seen. That leads me to the assumption the key is only checked locally, not on a server.

@@sebestein09 There is no randomness in the activation system. The product keys are encoded in base-24 and they contain a part of the product ID and a public key for verification. Edit: I did a bit of research and actually the product keys for Windows XP are based on ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) and they contain 3 things: a part of the product ID, a part of a SHA1 hash and a signature. The signature is made from a private key (kept secret by MS) and the hash. To verify a key, a formula is computed involving a public key (inside pidgen dll) and the hash. The result is then SHA1 hashed. The key is valid only if this new hash is the same as the one extracted from the key.
As for the phone activation process in Windows XP and Server 2003, the system is based on a hyperelliptic curve and is more complicated.

It has to be the same edition of windows for the key to work. You can't activate a a Windows Pro install with a Windows Home key. And because most people used Windows 7 Starter, they can't use those keys anymore, since Win10/11 don't have Starter editions.
There may have been "upgrade" versions of Windows 7 that you could buy, which you could install over the top of prior installs of XP or Vista, or you could enter the XP key into the "Upgrade" installer, to verify you had a prior valid license for something that qualified for the "upgrade" install.
But I don't think you could just "use an XP license" to "install 7" straight out? Pretty sure you either needed to get the "upgrade" disc/installer and enter a valid earlier key or upgrade over an existing install, or else get the full Win7 installer which requires a Win7 key? IIRC...?
But presumably then the "upgraded" Win7 would have a Win7 key as well (only using the XP key to validate a prior license that allowed a cheaper "upgrade" to Win7 license/install). So, you'd still be "upgrading" a Win7 key or its associated hardware to a Win10 Digital license associated with that hardware and/or a Microsoft account, depending. So, you'd still have to have the intermediate Win7 install/license in order to get up to to 10. Yeah?
Is there are hardware configuration that works with both XP and 11, given that they are about 20 years apart? Even with a virtual machine, you are going to have to change the hardware configuration, at the very least from BIOS to UEFI, and that would probably invalidate the key.

There was a time when Microsoft only allowed users to downgrade to a maximum of 2 previous versions of Windows. Back when Vista first came out, unsurprisingly, most users wanted XP on their machines and this could be done, easily. The same applied to Windows 7, for those who still wanted XP. When Windows 8 came out, the oldest version that could be downgraded to was Vista, but most chose 7 instead. They relaxed that stipulation when 8.1 came out, it would seem, and have been allowing users to upgrade to newer versions ever since.
I've activated Win10 installs with Win7 keys plenty of times, so I'm not surprised that it works for 11 as well. After all, 10 was offered as a free upgrade from 7 and 11 is offered as a free upgrade from 10, so if you had a Win7 machine that you free-upgraded to 10, and now it somehow magically passed hardware validation for 11... well it makes sense to me that it works from a key perspective since the upgrade path exists - even though I doubt any PC was ever sold with Win7 that actually has new enough hardware to pass the upgrade validation for 11. There are still ways to do it though, of course.
It's very possible someone with a retail copy of Windows 7 built a PC back in the day and then gradually upgraded their hardware throughout the years while reactivating Windows and moving onto the next edition.
So here 's my story. So I never paid for Windows after XP lol
added I forgot to mention vista, and I used phone activation glitch thing which should have changed my key but it stayed the same somehow. so I don't think this is re-doable now because MS patched the glitch soon (it came back on early stage of Win10 when you could activate WIndows by just making a call completely free)

Yes, valid 7, 8, 8.1 keys should all work for 10+ installs, since Win10 pushed "free upgrades" for all OSes back to Win7 (including Win8/8.1). Basically, anything with a valid Win7/8/8.1 key would "validate"/"activate." Which is why you can still activate Windows 10 when installing via Media Creation Tool from a machine with Win7/8/8.1 via in in-place upgrade. After which point it links the machine hardware [and Microsoft account, if any] to the Win10 Digital License, and it will allow you to reinstall Win10 on that machine clean, and just say "I don't have a product key," and the activation server will still recognize the hardware and validate/activate it, since it was already activated/validated & associated with that hardware at least once previously.
A lot of people don't understand the Windows licencing model. That $50 eBay version is probably a leaked volume licence copy that is sold as a bootleg version. Windows has retail licencing, OEM and volume including MAK (multiple activation key) and KMS (key management services) and others I can't recall right now. Most of these are not interchangeable. For instance, just the other day I loaded a Win 10 Pro for a client using one of my volume licence copies as it was quicker to install from thumb drive. The client had an OEM (genuine) Win 10 Pro licence card and DVD but her single use OEM key wouldn't activate my volume licence install. Installing the version that came on the DVD did however work of course. In the volume licence world there are Windows versions from Microsoft's volume licence web portal including Windows N, Windows KN (uses the KMS licence) and others. It really is a complex model that I still don't fully understand decades later. I work with many Government funded organisations and they typically all use a form a multiple activations from a single key. It is often these types of licences that end up on the black market as a single key can be used hundreds or even thousands of times. Often Microsoft will blacklist a leaked key and your cheap online copy you purchased won't subsequently activate. This is why the vendor will often just provide another key as they probably have many themselves. Interesting video nonetheless.

I admit fully that it sounds extremely dated to say "Rate" in a video since YouTube replaced the starred rating system with the current (albeit inclusive of the dislike count) like/dislike system many eons ago in the far simpler times of September 2009, where a viewer's rating submission of less than or equal to three stars was converted to a dislike and the same of equal to or greater than three stars was converted to a like. I liked windows 7 and I would have stuck up to end of life if I knew they would just keep that free upgrade deal going indefinitely!
8:55 I thought exactly that you explained about the Windows 11 activation with a Windows 7 product key, there´s a video from NTDEV channel making an upgrade from windows 7 to 11 directly (modifing the ISO) , keeping everything (i thought, maybe this include the windows license), i made this experiment on a virtual machine with a activated copy of windows 7 to upgrade to 11 and yep, it works, i kept all and my activation of windows, and this applies for Windows 8/8.1, too. So yes, it´s not a sorprise, we can activate windows 10 or 11 using a windows 7 or 8 product key. Interesting video and experiment.👍🏼
FYI No that key won't get used up, microsoft just grants you a second digital license against that key on your microsoft account. I activated a Windows 10 copy with a Windows 8.1 key for my PC in 2018 (Upgraded it to 10). Later in 2020 I installed Windows 8.1 again in a seperate parition, and yes the original key worked. Now I have two OSes, windows 8.1 an 10 on a same PC using the same product key, and haven't recieved any activation failed errors.
The activation keys are tied to your hardware (more specifically your motherboard) and not the Windows version (7/8/10/11). So, as long as you're running the same hardware, the key will work.
If you use your win7 key to activate win 10 or 11, yes, you can activate win7. With Win 7 key you can activate Win 8, 8.1, 10, 11, no matter it was OEM or Box version. Also you can activate new win version with Retail keys. One note - don't use same key on different win/PCs at one time. Win 7-11 has same activation service method.
THe one thing that doesn't seem to work is 7 Upgrade keys. I once had a crappy laptop with a Vista key and a 7 Upgrade key stuck to the bottom and neither would work on Windows 10. OEM keys work for activating Win 10 but I haven't managed to download anything from Microsoft using one of them.
I own a valid windows 8 Pro retail key. Yes you can activate windows 11 with it.
I believe it still works because since Windows 10 can be activated with a 7, 8 and 8.1 key. Many less reputable market places started to sell 7, 8 and 8.1 keys as Windows 10 keys. I'd wager it would likely not work with Vista or any older versions of Windows.
You can re-use a Windows product key (Or alteast I think so.), I have a photo of my laptop's Windows 10 product key, and I sometimes use it for my VM Windows 10 setups. May not work for earlier versions, depends.
@1:16 : "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." - George Santayana Thanks for this master-easter egg-piece Dude !! @5:24 "Subscribe or I'll bite you". > Bite me and then I will subscribe. Will you dare?
Only when Linux becomes remotely average user friendly instead of actively user hostile. You got more chance of half the world suddenly deciding to speak nothing but latin, i.e. probably never.
That's great to know! I knew it would work since Microsoft wants its users to migrate to Windows 10 then how you mentioned they made the same with Windows 11!
I really liked this video. This just shows us that windows is never changes, it's just have a one kernel and every 5 years they are changing the design 💀. But this is really groudbreaking! I love it. Keep going with these videos, they are amazing!
It’s nice to know that if you buy a windows version and don’t use it. Or can’t afford the newest version that you can basically use that key eventually.
Imagine if someone bought windows 8 and then didn’t use it because of some reason. Now years later their key still works but on windows 11. That would be a hella good look to them.
It honestly makes windows look more like they care about customers than intended lmao
Not surprised Windows 7 works. I had a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, that I upgraded to 10 in 2015, and just updated to 11. Never had to activate it once the update was complete.
Windows 98 keys will not work. Because it's Windows 9x
Window 7 until Windows 10 Keys will work because they are Windows NT
Edit : Windows XP Fails because it's not a part of the Windows Vsta ERA. Modern Windows is All based in Windows Vista and even if they jumped to NT 10.0, Windows 10 and 11 are just Vista with features
I can't be bothered to tell the reason why those keys work, just go to my comment, check my new reply to understand it, but I will tell you this, take my word for it, regular xp keys won't work, but embedded would work, check why on my reply in my comment.
@@MSWinNT I see that Windows 7's is 6.1, Windows 8 being 6.2, Windows 8.1 being 6.3 and Windows 10 being 10.0. Starting Windows 11 it still use 10.0. however some areas still bear 6.3 and most is 10.0
Dude, this is 100% fake, Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 Beta have the same major kernal, but not the same minor kernal, service pack, updates, and branch, stop spreading false info, Windows 10 use 6.3 kernal in some areas, but is overall 10.0.
It really shouldn't be a surprise that 7 keys work. I upgraded from 7 Home Premium to 10 just last year and 10 kept 7's activation key in place with no fuss. It tossed me onto 10 Home and I went on with my day.
Could the reason why the XP key failed is because of it being a 32 bit version whereas Windows 11 would be expecting a valid 64 bit version key? I would be interested in seeing a follow up if the same were to happen with XP x64 edition (and/or Server 2003) as well as maybe Vista/Server 2008 x64 editions.
The reason the XP key didn't work is because it was a key from an OS prior to Windows 7. Period. Vista [presumably] also would not have worked.
When Win10 was released, Win7, 8, 8,1 were all allowed to be upgraded to Win10 for free. Meaning all the retail home/pro keys [and presumably OEM keys, or whatnot] made for those OSes were basically "grandfathered in" to the activation process on the activation server, and would "validate" and would then generate an associated Win10 Digital License, associated with that computer's hardware (and Microsoft Account, if one was active / logged in and associated with it).
Vista, XP, Me, 98Se, 98, 95a/b were never part of the "free upgrade" program. So their license keys, presumably were "grandfathered in" on the activation server. Hence, they wouldn't validate. If he'd used a Vista disc, and it failed to validate, well, that'd pretty much be your proof. XP/Vista, no. 7/8/8.1, yes.
When the "free upgrade" period ended, Microsoft *should have* turned off the ability to activate using old keys ... but they didn't. So, you've basically always been able to use the media creation tool to either do an in-place upgrade on a Win7/8/8.1 machine, or else a clean install and then enter the valid Win7/8/8.1 key post-clean-install, and validation would simply work. Had they wanted to they could have recoded the activation server to kick back with an error "free upgrade period has ended" when trying to validate a machine / key that hadn't been upgraded during the "free" period. But they apparently never did. So, even though you're technically "not supposed to be able to," Microsoft never really enforced the "end" of the "free upgrade" program on the activation server side.
IMO, it was low-key intentional to ignore people who took advantage, 'cause it got them off older less secure machines and onto the new Windows OS, Windows Update treadmill, and into the Microsoft Store ecosystem, where they could potentially sell people software-as-a-service and make more money. So, it really makes sense to just ignore the putative "piracy" as a "loss leader" and get them into the updated ecosystem, buying new software, hardware that's compatible with it [making hardware vendors happy], etc.
Could they go back and sue 1/10th of their Win10 install base for "piracy"? Yeah, probably. Would they ever recover from the bad press? Maybe, maybe not... IMO, the good [read: potential profits] of leaving it de facto "free" and not pursuing action against folks who picked up "free upgrades" in violation of the EULA / TOS, outweighs any negatives of missing a "sale" of the OS...
you can use use xp key to activate windows 7 or vista then upgrade to windows 8 /10 then 11? i already know you can upgrade from win3.1 up to windows 7 but can it actually go up to windows 11? That i'm not sure but it would be nice to try and see .
Definitely a great video But I don't think That upgrading every computer To even Windows 10 Even though Windows 10 is good It's a great idea I think You should always Think about your hardware And how powerful it is And you should always think about it What you want to do with your hardware Some operating systems work better than others I think it's all Dependent On What works for you And what works for your hardware
эндер, когда видос на русском языке?, я конечно все и так понимаю на английском , но хотелось бы русскоязычное видео или отдельный русскоязычный канал для тех, кто английский не понимает. ролики у тебя познавательные и интересные, иногда я даже новое узнаю
It makes sense to me for it to only work for Windows 7 and up, since Windows 10 was a free upgrade for those versions, and Windows 11 was a free update for Windows 10. But there was no free update to Windows 7 from XP or to XP from 98.
As for why the Windows XP key took longer: Windows XP was the first version of Windows to actually use Windows Activation. (Windows 98 just had a product key, which would work on any copy.) So maybe it's still ultimately the same activation system.
Back then it would have been good to instantly reject the old public Windows keys. So maybe they are included in a local blacklist. Or maybe they changed the checksum that would verify it wasn't a mistyped key.
Hence the XP key made it past the initial check, and had to wait on the servers to check it.
I started to use win 7 about a year before it was released. Sure. It was buggy during the beta periods but better than vista :)
Then, when it got released I got an RTM key from work. Last time I used it was a few years ago and then for installing win 7 on an old laptop. Never struck me that I could use it for win 10.
I got a few win 10 keys for a customers way back when it was new. One was never used so I kept it (with their permission). Still works fine. But maybe I should try the old win 7 RTM key next time :)
one bizarre way i could think to activate Windows 11 pro would be with the Windows 8 Media center pack. initially Windows 8 didn't come with Windows media center anymore, but they sold separate activation keys for people with Windows 8. this key on it's own would be enough to activate Windows 10 or 11 pro versions.
Also to get a windows 11 Account on the Pro version you can select "Setup for an Organisation" and then "I'd like to join a Domain" and then it will let u create a local account
I found that on Windows 10 you can personalize without activating if you are not connected to the internet and you do it early enough. Then once it checks to make you activate, your changes are locked in until you activate. If it is an embedded license you will just get to customize any time you want. It is a good way to lock in your own wallpaper and personalizations if you get people messing with your settings and don't like that. The only real reason not to activate is if you are only testing something. If you were like Linus and tested a lot of hardware it would get expensive fast to activate Windows for each one!! That is especially true when you consider that most of those are temporary installs for the purposes of testing and discussing some oddball device that no one has ever seen or been able to justify the cost of.
I haven't watched your videos in a while, now that I'm back I realize you talk in your videos, AMAZING! For some reason that weird youtube thing unsubbed me but idgaf and I re subbed :D
saw this video and started digging around in my software box and found - windows 7 home premium 32/64 retail from microsoft dated 02/28/2011, originaly installed on my hpxw 4300 workstation. activation key worked for me, thank you.
you can also create an offline account if you choose work and school account, where you may be able to join a domain instead and create that offline user
I would have liked to see if Windows Vista activated Win11. Though I suspect not.
If you'll recall, Windows 10 upgrades were allowed for free from Win7, and Win 8, so presumably, Windows can parse those keys and tie them back to the OS they were originally issued for and the activation server continues to "validate," since those OSes were originally on the "green light" list when Win10 was originally released and pushed as an upgrade. It's the same reason you can still upgrade from a Win7 machine to Win10 using an in-place upgrade with the media creation tool, etc.
I suspect that if you tried a Vista key, it would fail, since Vista was not allowed as an upgrade path to Win10 for free, even if many of the machines it was installed on could also run Win7 and may have later been loaded with it by cheap manufacturers using older hardware reissued with the newer OS. Anyway, that would have been an interesting test, which I suspect would have failed, despite Win7 basically being a "refresh"/"fix" of Vista (fixing many of the things people hated about Vista, such as intrusive widgets, etc.), just as 8.1 was a refresh of Win8, and Win10 was basically built on top of Win 8 with a bunch of feature updates, additions, fixed, etc. (fixing many of the things people hated about 8/8.1, e.g., the default "Metro" tablet-style interface, which everyone detested on regular desktops, which were not tablets).
I thought this was pretty common knowledge considering as you said Windows 11 uses Windows 10's activation so that would include all Windows 7 and newer keys.
I rate this video a thumb! Glad MS allows us to use these older keys to "actiwate" Windows 10 and 11. Just remember that a Home key will only activate Windows 10 or 11 Home. To "actiwate" Pro you'll need a Pro or Ultimate key. Now I want to go around "actiwating" my impression of Chekov from Star Trek TOS. 😁 Thanks for the vid!
This thing checks the product key while offline completely. Its a local process or algorithm it is checked against. Speaking on windows 10 install, which I did completely offline. Win7 key worked in Win10 fresh install like a charm.
Oh, and in my experience, using the Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10 doesn't actually prevent you from using it on Windows 7. Or, at least, it doesn't if that copy of Windows 7 was already activated.
I suspect this was so you could go back to Windows 7 if Windows 10 didn't work out.
And, if course, I would expect Windows 11 to work the same way.
11's just Win10[.1] effectively, with a few facelift and under the hood updates... Windows 12 will basically be 10.2, or whatever. So, it makes sense that if Win10 would accept Win7/8/8.1 keys as upgrade [since Win10 was originally a "free" upgrade from those OSes], that Win11 would still validate much the same way and presumably accept the old license keys to get into the "Win10+" ecosystem. Granted Win11 has a few [now mostly circumventable] system hardware requirements that 10 didn't. But otherwise, the core is still much/mostly the same. So, it is what it is...
for the local account method, i use accessibility stuff to get to settings then go to internet settings and disconnect from the internet then go back. this worked on home
great video. i used also a win7 oem key on my old thinkpad to update it to win10. worked without a problem. i wonder if you could also use a vista key ... because 7 was an update to vista... and vista an update to xp... perhaps it is possible to activate them after each other ^^
Wow, I remember those Windows 7 Ultra packages. MS was handing them out like candy back in the day. I wonder if I still have any. Now I have to go clean the basement and see if I can find any of them...lol.
There is another way to use a local account when setting up windows. This will work on windows 10. All you need to do is not set up the wi-fi on the computer if it asks you to connect to the wi-fi. Or if you have a ethernet cable in the computer, just unplug it before starting the setup. You can connect to the internet once the setup is complete.
Microsoft pushed every Windows 7 user to upgrade to Windows 10. And they even said, all copies of Win 7 purchased up to a certain date will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Since this Win7 Ulti key was definitely purchased before the deadline, it definitely allows the upgrade to Win 10. Since it's also free to upgrade from Win 10 to 11 at any time, in case you have a valid key, those Win 7 keys must work all the way up to Windows 11. That's the simple explanation why this works. And it's also the explanation why it won't work with some Win 7 keys that people bought or will buy on ebay - because they were sold after the deadline.
You can still use win7 keys on win10 and 11 just fine. And Microsoft cares so little that you can use even a oem key on multiple computers with no repercussions
Very off-topic question. But, I am attmpting to install Windows XP through USB onto another computer (Lenovo T61) and im getting the error "Setup cannot find the the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA). Setup cannot continue. To quit, press F3. And this is starting to annoy me. Im not sure what to do, can someone help? Thank you in advance.
Hey Enderman! With my Win 10 Pro PC, I have a home key on my oc lol. What i did, was change my product key to a Pro, But unplug ethernet and disconnect from Ethernet. Then it will work! 98 may work too.
I got a Vista key back in the days, it allowed me to upgrade to 7, then 10 for free. Now Microsoft associated that key with my account, I didn't need to activate 11 after logging in. It's pretty neat.
Both my original boxed full 7 home premium (Pro in otherwords) and 8.1 Pro upgrade keys work on 10 Pro and 11 Pro. Although the 7 key will sometimes (for some reason known only to m$) require phoning the automated activation line when reinstalling.
Really not surprise about Windows 98 or XP not wirking - they're just far too old for the key to activate. There were also no upgrade paths from these older OS'es to anything modern. I'm also not surprised that Windows 7 worked just fine. Remember, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 keys were, and still can, be used to activate Windows 10, and Windows 10 keys can be used to activate Windows 11. Hence, Windows 7 and newer product keys can be used to activate Windows 11. The problem, of course, is Windows 11 not being able to run on anything older than Intel 8th Gen / AMD Ryzen 2nd Gen.
it's quite simply because krosoft's objective is no longer to sell the operating system but that to be installed on all the pc's in the world in order to sell what it offers on the windows store that's why they launched the free win10 in 2015 and it is still free even for cracked versions of windows 7/8/8.1 and the same for win11
win xp and win 11 is not same version, and if you have act key win 8, you cant active win 11 but if you have act key win 10, you can active win 11
it can be said that you already have an activation code that has been upgraded to the latest Windows version. If not, you cannot use an activation code that has not been upgraded to the latest Windows version.
the activation code will record your motherboard number on the Microsoft server and will remain installed if the activation code is not used again
I recently upgraded a old lga775 pc from Windows 8.1 to Windows 11 without any issues. I used Rufus to create the usb used to bypass secure boot and TPM 2.0 requirements . I didn’t have to go to windows 10 before 11 I was able to upgrade straight from 8.1 to 11 by running the installer on my usb in file explorer on windows. I was happy that Microsoft even by saying 7 and 8.1 computers can’t upgrade to 11 which was false of them because I did that without any problems. It was easy to upgrade to 11, just like it was upgrading to windows 10 back in the 2015.
I have multiple PC's i've upgraded from Windows 8 Pro Retail to 10 Pro and then two of those licenses were retail (no OEM's) so I could move them to Win 11 compatible hardware and it worked.
Makes sense since Windows stopped charging for the OS upgrade (if you stick with the same level) with WIndows 7. If you bought Windows 7 (or your machine came with it) you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free.
Though, I find this interesting. In the past, I was unable to directly enter a Windows 7 key into a fresh/virgin install of Windows 10. I had to install Windows 7 first, activate it, then upgrade to Windows 10 in order to get a Windows 10 digital license. Glad to see they fixed this that. It was a giant PITA to do.
I thought you said that your point of hiding your key of XP was because you paid $300 for it, so it's kind of a big deal. Well, since you only paid $50 for those Windows 7s, then why the same treatment (esp. without a similar explanation)?
That was so cool how Microsoft stills let users activate their Windows 11 (maybe 10) using Windows 7 (8/8.1/10)'s Product Key. By the way, Microsoft stills update Windows 7 until 2021 Jan.
with that you can bypass the setup with having to connet to the enternet what is posted earlier it will alow you setup windows 11 with out a conection like windows 10 saying have no enternet conection
The Windows 11 copy I'm using on my computer to watch this video, was actually activated with a Windows 7 key, because it was what my dad had laying around, and he didn't want to spend a few hundred dollars for a Windows 11 key.
Late to the party, but I guess it was activated because if you remember Microsoft gave free upgrade from windows 7, 8, 8.1 to windows 10 and then the windows 10 users got free upgrade to windows 11
Maybe try converting the key by activating windows 7 with your windows xp key then upgrading to windows 10 or 11 to see if the key will transfer or trying to activate.
G'day Enderman, in future if you want to run W7 it should activate with this Motherboard using the same key, I have a GA-78LMT-USB3 which has an OS Drive for each of W7 & W10 for testing components, I randomly swap from one to the other with no problem.
There was a time when a lot of people didn't want windows 10.Windows 11 isn't desired by a lot of people either. There's a program called Never 10, which helped prevent people with Windows 7, from automatically updating to Windows 10(free of charge).
Win 7 was upgraded to Win 10 almost a decade ago, thus the keys should be valid. Albeit they expired the free upgrade years ago. But it's in Microsoft's interest to gain as many users to continue migrating up to 10 and then 11. After all, that's how they make revenue off us, not from the sale of OSes, but our continued use of them. Ads, analytics, royalties and licensing. This keeps Windows as the OS for most commercial apps and games. The bread and butter of PCs.
My main computer I built myself is using running Windows 11 Pro on a Dell OEM Win 7 Pro key from a computer that got repurposed as a Linux test bed. So OEM keys will activate Win 11 on different manufacturers too.
I’m pretty sure because the XP key follows a newer formula, it at least checks the key, whereas with a Windows 98 key, it knows right off the bat that it’s invalid.
I like your MS peripheral setup. I’ve got the same mouse at work and a MS Natural Keyboard from the Windows 98 era. Out of curiosity, what kind of keyboard are you using? It sounds almost like an IBM Model M, but it’s clearly not one.
Funny thing to check: I also tried doing this a couple of months ago and I used a Windows 7 Professional Key, BUT if for example you open AIDA64 to check the key it's not the key you have entered but VK7JG-NPHTM-C97JM-9MPGT-3V66T.
It gives you digital entitlement for whatever PC you activate it with so that's why it just shows the default key. You can even hacktivate win 7 and get digital entitlement for 10/11 just by installing an equivalent version on top of it.
It's common knowledge that MS never abendoned the upgrade path from Win 7, 8 and 8.1 to Win 10. Win 10 should have been the "last" Windows in terms of full Versions. MS switched to a more modular system that developes in a n evolutionary way. The hardware industry was not very happy. And to enforce new hardware standards for their OS, they came up with Win 11. Otherwise some people and especially companies only would upgrade their hardware when it's broken. They even mentioned it around the launch of Win 10. They said that from time to time they will have to leave some old hardware behind and cut the support for it. That's what happens now with Non-TPM-2.0 Systems and old CPUs.
iirc, there were no migration/upgrade path from XP to Win7. Its easy to imagine that Microsoft would simply declare keys that created before Win7 to be invalid.
I just did a clean install with Windows 11 on a usb without TPM and SecureBoot and it worked on my Toshiba Satellite with XP operating system. Put a new formatted SSD 1tb instead of disk drive. When I logged into Microsoft it recognized my account and asked if I wanted to transfer from a previous machine.
I know for a fact Windows 7 keys work, because I used my Windows 7 Activation key, they literally only charge you if this is your first Windows install since XP or if you do not have any windows product key
Maybe someone in the world upgrading to Windows 11 coincidentally got the same product key as the one on that specific box you're using. I don't know for sure if this is true but hey! The world is a strange place. People have strange thoughts.
I got a bunch of Win7 cdkey stickers for free, where i used to work at a few years ago. So yeah, they still work for Windows10 and 11. Since Win7 keys work on Win10, and since you can upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free if you have the hardware required, then yeah they still work.
The Dave's Garage channel is run by a guy who helped write windows. It's interesting sometimes but as you can imagine he thinks the sun shines out of his rear end.
Microsoft officially only offered windows 7 users to upgrade to windows 10 for a limited amount of time, but never turned it off. Microsoft wants every PC to use windows 10/11 so they are not bothered about people upgrading for free anyway. They make more than enough money from businesses buying licences for windows.
The channel literally downgraded from chilly music and well made subtitles to a typical channel "let's try doing that and checking what's going on. Don't forget to share like subscribe eat my shorts"
windows 7,8,8.1 product key now still activate Windows 10, 11 if product key are used to activated Windows 10 or 11 before Oct 2023 but now all retails and OEM windows 10 product key still activate windows 11.
You can get a windows 11 digital license by first installing a windows 7 volume license iso. This works even if you use a hacking activation on windows 7. All my PCs have digital licenses without paying anything, even for windows 7.😁
Use a Windows 98 key to activate XP. Use an XP key to activate 7. Use a 7 key to activate 11. Requirements: 20 year old PC and hope to get Windows 11 on that.
Try to use windows 7 key with window 7 and then try to downgrade to windows xp with the same key in your device then upgrade to windows 11 with the same device key of your motherboard Note:- when you activate window, the motherboard will have the key ,even you change cpu or GPU or ram or hard disk or ssd or ....... You know
I mean, my AMD Ryzen desktop PC when I had finished building it needed a key. The place I was building it had an old husk of a system with a key on the top. I asked if I could use it and got the go ahead. I fed it in and the key worked lol. Not going to complain if the server backend said yes.
When i upgraded from windows 7 to 10 for free when microsoft promoted it, i noticed that my system now was activated with a retail key. The windows 7 oem key my computer came with still works on windows 10 so now i have a spare retail key
Windows 10 officially supported free upgrade from Windows 7 and 8.1 for one year. But the technology was never removed, as you prove it's still there even inside Windows 11.
There is even an activator that works based on that specifically.
@@ThatRandomToast The massgravel activator tricks a built in tool to think it's running on properly activated Windows 7 of a given edition so it generates a Windows 10/11 activation license file.
Activators are usually emulators tricking the system to be activated. Instead, use the slmgr command to activate via a KMS server, or use Microsoft Activation Scripts by massgravel.
It's kind of logic you can't just cheat and use any random key to activate Windows. You will have to pay your share of using the software - in some way. Microsoft did leave the possibility to UPDATE from an earlier ACTIVATED version of Windows. Meaning you can try legally UPDATE from an early version. Installing a new fresh version of Windows and activate it, is not possible, unless the hardware already is registered by a digital license from a previous Windows activation. (Or you have paid for a key) This means you must install an early version WITH activation key and then UPDATE from this - which is fully legal. However it's not always possible as there are limitations on how old versions you can keep updating from. Note that you can never upgrade from a home to pro version this way - UNLESS the hardware already has a digital license for the upgrade version. It's complicated, and must be, as any corporation can not work without getting paid for it's products.
In My case from WIndows Vista I was able to update but 7 later 8 8.1 10 and 11. Same key. Microsoft also temporality allowed to upgrade to the win 7 from XP but that was like free promo for people who still sit on XP than that key could be used for another upgrades. It is really possible that copy could be activated but not now anymore. Most changes came on Win 7 from this point until today you can activate any newer version of windows.
Windows 7 & 8 keys will be transformed into a new upgrade key which is always the same. So the OS knows that this is an old key... Just try to read it out with a software
things i did not know, firstly andrew plays geometry dash and asphalt 9, possible to make a local account without a ms account and you can use a product key from certain windows os to be used to activate the newer versions of windows
Great! 😁 Microsoft should tell users that their old keys work for Windows 11, or sell them as "Windows" keys without specifying a version, I think 🤔 Because, what's the point of buying a Windows 11 key on the Microsoft Store, like I did a few weeks ago, if Windows 10 keys (that I also have from the Microsoft Store) still work? 🤦🏻♂️ And... can you use Windows 11 keys to activate Windows 10 (or 8.1, 8, 7...), then? 🤔 🤔 🤔
I'm sure this works on win11 since it works on win10, to create local acc just disconnect your computer from the internet when going thru the windows install.
The only benefit Windows 11 has over Win 10 is that you can run WiFi 6E on Windows 11 and not at all on Windows 10. Makes me so frustrated because I do NOT want windows 11
i wish all games where supported on Linux.. then i would have probably hopped over on my Desktop this year (after my job cut support on working from your own PC so now i have to have 2 computer setups at home in order to be able to work from home ><)
The reason is logical: back then you could update Win7 to Win10 for free, what I did, exactly like later I have upgraded Win10 to Win11 for free. I have the same vintage registration number. If I am not wrong I uses for Win7 the same key of Win Vista! But I am not sure. So probably the key of Win Vista Pro is today my key of Win11.
Ender, hello. Have a question what is name of your account geometry dash? In old videos we can find this game link on your desktop. And yes, my english is bad, bc im russian, as you :)
I have a windows 11 gaming laptop, other than the wallpaper being Saint Olga from Half-life 2 Lost Coast it is just kinda clunky. Also the wallpaper was set by me lol
I hadn't considered this as a possibility. Seems like my old OS installers and keys will have a life after this. I wonder if my Vista keys will finally have a use?
Nope, Vista's outdated rubbish and was never part of the "free upgrade" program for Win10 when it came out, so, as far as I know Vista keys are worthless outside of Vista, by and large. Only possible use *might* be for using to access a Win7 "upgrade" disc [if any?] to install Win7 on a machine, and then doing a Win10 in-place upgrade via the Media Creation Tool. But that's a bit of a corner case, and I'm not 100% sure whether an "upgrade" version of Win7 qualifies for the Win10 "free" upgrade via an MCT in-place upgrade? Probably... But no guarantees?
Enderman I know this is not the argument of the video but how do you get that widgets on your windows 10 pc desktop that indicates your hard drives exc… which you showed in your previous videos?
Well... one that hasn't hit its use number limit, that is (wherein you would have to call Microsoft to explain and get another key, like I had to do with my 7 key after so many fresh reinstallations even on the same computer.
Also if you want to make an offline account you can just skip connecting to internet, or if you are connected, just unplug the router, because now windows cant check if the microsoft account exists
Windows 11 will accept any key from Windows 7 and up because all these systems are offered free upgrade to Windows 10. I was hoping I could find a way to use a Vista key.
Well, that's something I will never deal with...I had to hack my Windows 10 registry to prevent Windows 11 from trying to install. That POS will never reside on any drive I own.
i dunno if there was like now the "get windows 7 for free" for windows XP and when you click it it installed an activated version of windows (If you had it activated) then it means that you could use it to activate windows 7 and then activate windows 11 and bam maybe you could activate windows 11 with windows XP key but im not sure
hi :), windows has unleashed an update on windows 11 home and pro (not standard) and there is some bugs for it which somehow activates a windows 3.1x product key (specifically). for windows 11 standard (not home) and windows 11 s mode, you cannot use windows 10 product key in version 21H2. it seems like microsoft has something up their sleeves tho
WIndows 8 was free, if you have Win 7 and so on, so it wouldnt make any sense that XP can activate Win 11. If you have a Win 7 key u can install Win 8,8.1, 10 and 11.
No kidding, I thought about this today after seeing a XP product key sticker on a old PC, and having a Windows 11 bootable USB right belongside me. Now I am not a beggar for likes, but I wanted to say what a funny coincidence.
It actually can be bypassed and you could use it in a way if u find a way to upgrade from xp to 7 and it will fix the product key to a 7 key and then upgrade from 7 to 11 and it will fix the product key to work with windows 11
I suppose if you did an in-place upgrade from Windows XP to Vista somehow, then upgrade that to 7 and from there upgraded to 10, then maybe? Would probably have only worked during the first initial free upgrade though. Because during the free upgrade period it most likely just generated a new key if it considered XP keys invalid by that point. Not sure if doing it now would give you a valid activated state, unless by now you've associated your account with a valid Windows 10 key.
I never upgraded my computer's OS to another one. I just bought new computers with the new OS already installed. I just got a new computer with win 11 and I still have to migrate all my files over to it.
неплохо, если человеку буду ставить 11, можно будет активировать её моими ключами от 7 винды, дисковые версии которых у меня присутствуют) и кстати, респект за американский акцент, редко увидишь снг человека с норм акцентом
i once activated Windows 11 with Windows 7 key on an old dell pc. but when i roll back to Windows 10, i can't use the key to reactivate it for some reason...
My current Windows 11 version still runs off a Windows 7 OEM Key, which i linked to my MS account and every PC i login with it, windows is automatically activated.
Side note: if u use OEM key (Windows in Manufacture Partners such as Laptop or Pre-built PCs) or other edition (i.e. Vista Home Premium to 11 Pro), it doesn't work.
I think it still does if you are using it on the machine that OEM is intended for, it did for me anyways, maybe things have changed since that last time I did it.
After enough registry edits and using 11 pro its only mildly annoying but they should be embarrassed as hell and they're purposely hosing Win 10 with shit updates to get you on 11. At least with pro you can turn off updates for two weeks at a time and hide others so they don't execute. Thank God 24.04 is out in April and everyone like POP and Mint a few months later without Ubuntu slow snaps. Don't even get me started on MACs.
you got one thing wrong there microsoft forced windows 10 upgrade onto every user you didnt get a choice you had to get some hackers info on how to turn off the auto upgrade otherwise you ended up with an operating system that was buggy as hell which in some cases deleted all the files & im one of the few who avoided the upgrade & still use win 7 with xp pro as a backup
No not exactly . Since you install a Pro version of Window 11 , you can use product code of Window 7 Pro or Window 7 Ultimate. The Home & Enterprize edition of 7 will not work. The same with Window 8.1 Pro works with Windows 10 or 11 Pro .
I also have some thoughts about your XP key, being since windows 11 is a 64 bit only OS, using a 32 bit key isnt going to work. You should try this experiment again with a 64 bit XP key
I had a windows xp on that stupid black sponge holder, and it wouldn't come off... Me not taking my time, I broke my disc in half... I'm so mad at myself. I have ALL my windows install discs from windows 95 floppy and cd up to windows 10, and now 11 on usb
Please dont go out and spend $50 on Windows 7 to get Windows 11 activated as you can buy working Windows 11 keys on line for around $17 with an ETA Prime discount code
If you have windows 10 , then active windows 10 and upgrade to windows 11 . if you want pro , so buy for windows 10 and after you active upgrade to windows 11
I did not buy the key for activation. I downloaded the iso, I installed it on my computer, it became active automatically after I installed it. I also downloaded the iso file from the official microsoft windows site.
Nothing new , I have activated Windows 10 and Windows 11 using Windows 7 key at least 100+ times and 100+ different device, actually most of the technician in third world country does this several times, people even activate their copy of windows from the sticker of a old broken windows 7 laptop.
Will a OEM key work? I have an old hp laptop and I used the OEM key on the bottom to activate windows 7 home premium. But will the key work on windows 10 or 11?
bro that's illegal lol bcz windows 7 ultimate costs between 15 and 20 dollars and windows 11 key costs 200 dollars it's like 10 times the price of a windows 7 key and you can still activate windows 11 with it
i have an XP Pro OEM from Dell and an XP Homo Reiail... ALSO two x64 win 7 one homopro and Prof... the two first XP keys i know by memory bc i reinstalled xp so often... 200 times^.
Since when does this work? Last time I checked, every old Ultimate or Pro Edition that works would be converted into Windows 11 Home Edition instead of Pro. What changed?
I could activate Win11-Home on a new (homebrew) PC with the Win7-Home key of a deceased laptop. Seems, while upgrading, the hardware similarity checks are not executed.
What if you install DOS first, then install Windows 3.11, then UPGRADE to Windows 95, then UPGRADE to Windows XP, then UPGRADE to Windows 7, then UPGRADE to Windows 10, then UPGRADE to Windows 11???
it seem like win xp is unsupport to 10years ithink so the product key can use youneed to have windows 7 or later but some edition the most used is professional> 11Pro Untimate> 11pro home premiem 11home
not to be bad but did you use a windows Xp 64 version but also When you had windows 7 and they had the whole force you into windows 10 update window 7 keys worked for windows 10
you had windows 11 pro and probably not windows xp professional. maybe if you use windows 11 home??? it might work, at least that's how it works for windows 7 keys on windows 10
Ok so since you could upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 to Windows 10 for free, and Microsoft lets you upgrade to Windows 11 from Windows 10 for free, they had to make it so the Windows 7 and 8/8.1 keys works to activate Windows 11. This is also not new information.
sadly windows xp's phone activation is gone, and as i seen, you REQUIRE to activate the home edition, as pro versions dont always need activation, and just let you go through so R.I.P. windows XP home edition
Nope phone activation is still possible, i did it 2 weeks ago to restore an acer aspire 1300, you just press 3 in the main menu and dismiss the use of a smartphone (sms activation), it is still possible to activate it over the phone, yes, windows xp will tell you that it is impossible, but all you need is the activation phone number for your country and just call it, the menu says first "to activate windows, press 1", don't press 1! It will continue with "to activate office for mac, press 2"; and then, it will say "to activate any other product, press 3", just press 3 and continue the call, it will work when you give the first group of numbers, it will say "fantastic, now enter block 2" ;)
I was promoted from [my first favorite operating system] Microsoft Windows XP Professional to Microsoft Windows 10 Home, and then to Windows 10 Pro by a change of hardware. That would be from Cybernet to Dell. Can Microsoft Windows 11 be installed on a computer that is incompatible with Windows 11?
Windows 11 is a skin on Windows 10 that slows down even only 2 year old laptops. Why does Microsoft support my laptop if it runs like shit even after wiping my SSD and doing a fresh install?
@@akurasubject9617 Drag and drop is slowly being remade, I used Windows Insider Preview for a bit and it worked fine, where on a stock install it was broken.
Well so if i have w7 key i can use eleven Manes Sense cuz support ended in 2020 AND windows11 has a year since this AND if u won't use 10 u can bringup to 11 AND for wXP u can bring to win 7 AND with win7 bring to 11 without lost the activate status
my question is i have oem windows 7 key that I updated to windows 10,can I use that key to activate win 7 on another pc?,this pc have genuine win 10 pro key from online profile as well but I want to downgrade to win 7 because of useless features in windows 10
You might want to try XP 64 bit. Don't think you can use a key from 32 bit os on a 64 bit and 11 doesn't have a 32 bit edition as I recall. The 7 key might not have worked if you were going from Win 7 Home to 11 Pro so the editions probably have to match too. You went from 7 Pro to 11 pro so that's probably why it worked. :D
The Win9x key algo has been cracked I think so keygens can create valid ones so obviously Microsoft not gonna accept a key from that era. :P
@@ThatRandomToast Professional. The one that runs on x86-64. Not IA-64....I think that was something Intel tried to push before the transition to the current x64 standard so pretty sure that one is different so avoid that one. :P
Windows XP 64-bit Edition or Professional x64 Edition? The former is IA-64 and the latter is x86-64. Also, the x64 edition is distinct compared to Vista and later.
I have an original activation key for Windows XP x64 edition, can I use it to activate Windows 10? Should be for emergency use only. My old laptop with the Intel i3 processor and 8 GB of RAM goes off like a rocket with Windows XP x64 edition. It wasn't as fast as it is now, even when Windows 7 64bit was installed.

If you create twio folders, one a pid folder containing a generic product key and a setup folder saying what edition you want and insert them imto the sources folder of the installer and it will always activate while installing even without being connected to the internet on any pc. Ive even forgotten you even needed to activate. I keep this pid file ane config file and insert them in my sources folder everytime. Hence why i have the top windows 11 professional workstation edition on everything. I was shown how to make these ' pid' folders bu a youtube video many years ago. My installers now even on dvd are all pre activated and dont even ask what edition you are wanting. I think one folder is called a PID file and the other a EIG file. They are how the OEM install the operating systems on their new PCs. 👋🤣👌
I don't know how, but I just download windows 11 pro from microsoft (months ago) and installed it on my diy build pc.. Never used any key and it was activated from the start. Did not pay a dime and did not use a key.. What's going on? (I'm not kidding)
PS: I did download the ISO with a original Windows 8 laptop, so I guess that it's activated on that laptop or something..The win 11 install states "Activated with digital key" and the key is xxx-xxx-xxxx etc.. only x's
your board is embedded with key and auto activated. only 5 times is allowed and you have to call ms to revoke when you reach limit with real win 10 key(photo).

wow ... the replies... windows 10 key register with old versions of win 7 key and up has been open since redstone update and never closed. microsoft can block it at anytime, but with their os market share falling every year, its not likely. enjoy while you can?
I've been using linux for years but I switched back to Windows temporary... idk. I just hate Win10 because the way it's looks. I'm a developer for a small company but still I think that our designers are far better than the Win10 team. Yes design is important to me so I stick with Win11 as long as I have to use this useless system.
If you want to activate every Windows version just use a activator . After that you don't need to buy windows in the future . 🙂 I'll send you a safe and fast activator , I always use it😂😂

Maybe xp did not activate because it was a 32bit version of windows, There were some 64bit version of xp.. Curious if they would work. Win 11 is only 64bit, no 32bit available. I could be wrong though.. I would think that win 10 32bit would be aloud to activate 11.. who knows.. lol

Memories broken
The truth goes unspoken
I’ve even forgotten my name
I don’t know the season
Or what is the reason
I’m standing here holding my blade
A desolate place
Without any trace
It’s only the cold wind I feel
It’s me that I spite
As I stand up and fight
The only thing I know for real
There will be blood-shed
The man in the mirror nods his head
The only one left
Will ride upon the dragon’s back
Because the mountains don’t give back what they take
Oh no
There will be blood-shed
It’s the only thing I’ve ever known
Losing my identity
Wondering have I gone insane
To find the truth in front of me
I must climb this mountain range
Looking downward from this deadly height
And never realizing why I fight

By rights you've paid for the chosen OS platform of windows vs apple, linux whatever, so you should own that platform, not keep paying hundreds of dollars each time they decide to bloat it. I don't know about you, but I can't always afford internet and where I am internet may and has been problematic, even at the best of times, having times where no connection was available. You should be able to have an XP system if you want an XP system, why not? If you want a beta drive sitting there you should be able to have it sitting there and use it, you paid for it. To do otherwise is theft, it's dishonest, how many versions are they going to put out before we may actually use it?? Not to mention alot of money invested in games we bought that we cannot now use on other systems that one has to change not by choice.
Don't know about you, but I don't have the time nor the money anymore, not to mention health, especially with all these interest rates and inflation to keep playing this game. You can't spy when people are unable to keep going on your roundabout of forking out for this that and the other.
Another equally good method is if you have Windows 10 with a key. It can be computer bought with Windows 10 License can be a licensed disc. They were bought on the internet. Through the APP from Windows 11 comes direct activation. If you have an address. Compatible for Microsoft?*** is Skype for example? Based on that address, the next time something happens to the computer, a virus, you have to restore it, I give it too. Tele log in to Windows. And it will automatically be recognized as activated, because it goes in relation to your from address. He still wants to. Microsoft. And you don't have problems to remember key, license and stuff like that anymore, that's how I do it. And it's much easier. By updating. For Drivers, for. Anti virus protection systems. Automatic. It reaches them that you bought the sheep license 2. And it is recognized. As a validation key for Windows activation. 11. Or 10 whatever. And then you don't have any more problems with those keys. I also did this experience with a computer. A license for Windows 10. Ham. At home, I mean in English. And it recognized the key right away, what did I log in with my microsoft account? He admitted that he takes it without problems on both a virtual machine and a different computer that does not have a windows license based on the login address. With which I registered with Microsoft for Windows home. And you have the easiest method you don't have to remember anymore. Licenses and where did you put and?*** to make you come across it? But knowing your e-mail address that is recognized by Microsoft and the password is enough. Now I installed I recently did an act from Windows 11 and having 1210. Activated with an original license, it went perfectly. I didn't have to do anything else.
I like some of the transitions, but sometimes they're a bit too much and are seemingly random. Since we use these persistent elements that transition across pages to indicate some kind of relationship between the previous and the next states, some of your transitions confuse me because I can't immediately see what the relationship is.
For example 2:23 of the selectable tiles (which weren't selected) transition into being two switches... does that mean anything? are they related in some way? I see this as random and a bad use of the design language. However, at 1:14 I like the transition from switches to the ticks on a paper, that makes sense to me. Epic presentation tho
Only idiots pay for Windows... Full windows of All Versions can be downloaded for absolutely free from the internet with build in registration activation included. No Keys or Activation Cracks needed at all. Best thing is... Microsoft can't do Anything to you about it!!!
ther is a way to bypass it hold shift and press f10 and then enter in all capital letters in this format OOBE\BYPASSNRO and the hit enter and it will restart and it alowed you continue with out using acount you can creat a local accout dont give microsoft what they want for there agenda
Fun fact: Back when you could still get free Windows product keys from OnTheHub (iirc they stopped offering this in ~2019 though OnTheHub still has other software) I had a few saved. Turns out a product key is limited to 5 activations. There's one weird thing though, one of the product keys I had was never used, but then I tried activating Windows 10 Pro with it after Windows was no longer offered by OnTheHub and the key didn't work. It seems Microsoft disabled the OnTheHub keys, even the unused ones.
context: onthehub is a service primarily for educational software discounts which used to have free windows product keys for students. the us cyberpatriot organization was one of few non-school organizations to have access.
You can activate windows without any key at all. Just lookup "activate windows cmd script" you can read thigh the script to make sure that there isn't any malware included but the script is basically activatung your windows installation without any key.
One of the primary reasons that the product keys from Windows 7 work to activate Windows 11 is that Microsoft doesn’t make much of its revenue selling desktop licenses for consumers. Instead, the company makes the most revenue from cloud services and other products. Another reason is that if you’re a long-time Windows user, you might already have one. You could have a perfectly usable key sitting forgotten on an old PC, saving you time and effort. When installing Windows 11, the digital license associates itself with your device’s hardware. this was by bing ai
The fact you wasted all that moola on winbloze alonenis sad.. And it's already known that you can activate w10/11 using a w7 key

You mention sanctions. If you are Russian: Do you know why you are under sanctions? You're bypassing restrictions (probably with a VPN) to make YouTube videos in the language of countries that your regime is considering as the enemy and implicitly threatening of nuclear strikes, not to mention costing money for those same sanctions and helping those that you are aggressing. Plus you're even talking about products coming from those countries. It makes me SICK to see Russians continuing life as usual (such as making videos on YouTube) as if nothing disgusting is happening from the regime that they're de facto supporting by not fighting/protesting against it. Either face the consequences of protesting, or go try to take Bakhmut with Wagner, or, at the very least out of respect, don't come on YouTube making such videos as if nothing is happening. We're on the brink of war, damn it.
If you're not Russian but Belorussian, you can imagine a softer variation of this.

2. it checks it against a local algorithm
3. if it passes that algorithm it will send it to the server

You input the key, and it checks if it's a valid or an already used key, and then a server (only if you did it from the phone) also checks if it's valid.

1 likeI'm 99% certain I successfully activated Windows 10 Home on a laptop that wasn't connected to the internet a few weeks ago! No wifi connection at that point and no network cable anywhere to be seen. That leads me to the assumption the key is only checked locally, not on a server.

0 likesOf course thats mostly for private users since their main money they make in the business market and there they want of course to sell not only Windows but especially also Office, SQL-Server and whatever else.
@@sebestein09 / That’s not how it works. Codes are generated with specific seeds depending on the product line. So if you bought a Windows 7 key, its the equivalent of buying a license to Windows as a service. Especially now as Windows users can freely swap between versions of Windows when they come out at no cost.
18 likes@@sebestein09 There is no randomness in the activation system. The product keys are encoded in base-24 and they contain a part of the product ID and a public key for verification.
12 likesEdit: I did a bit of research and actually the product keys for Windows XP are based on ECC (Elliptic Curve Cryptography) and they contain 3 things: a part of the product ID, a part of a SHA1 hash and a signature.
Btw, the private keys are weak and easy to compute in several hours by solving ECDLP and HCDLP :)

0 likesProve it. Pretty sure you can't...?
0 likesThere may have been "upgrade" versions of Windows 7 that you could buy, which you could install over the top of prior installs of XP or Vista, or you could enter the XP key into the "Upgrade" installer, to verify you had a prior valid license for something that qualified for the "upgrade" install.
Yeah?

Back when Vista first came out, unsurprisingly, most users wanted XP on their machines and this could be done, easily. The same applied to Windows 7, for those who still wanted XP. When Windows 8 came out, the oldest version that could be downgraded to was Vista, but most chose 7 instead. They relaxed that stipulation when 8.1 came out, it would seem, and have been allowing users to upgrade to newer versions ever since.

There are still ways to do it though, of course.

and I'm actually using windows 11 with same key as XP because it was registered as key of WIndows7,8,8.1, and 10's key at some point, so it really worked.

I believe it because when they were forcing people to update to windows 10 with annoying popups. they added code to windows 10 to look at 7/8 product key databases. They either did not care to change this later and kept in their code or just did it so people would keep updating.

8 likesA lot of people don't understand the Windows licencing model.
9 likesIn the volume licence world there are Windows versions from Microsoft's volume licence web portal including Windows N, Windows KN (uses the KMS licence) and others.

For example 2:23 of the selectable tiles (which weren't selected) transition into being two switches... does that mean anything? are they related in some way? 17 likesReplies (2)
The reason the XP key didn't work is because it was a key from an OS prior to Windows 7. Period. Vista [presumably] also would not have worked.
0 likesWhen Win10 was released, Win7, 8, 8,1 were all allowed to be upgraded to Win10 for free.
IMO, the good [read: potential profits] of leaving it de facto "free" and not pursuing action against folks who picked up "free upgrades" in violation of the EULA / TOS, outweighs any negatives of missing a "sale" of the OS...
both 32 and 64 came on the disk for XP PRO. No joy there either.

4 likes1:42 7 keys work on 10! Used a dell oem 7 pro key on about 5 different devices, all activated fine
1 like9:11 well I didn’t know that it works on 11!
It makes sense to me for it to only work for Windows 7 and up, since Windows 10 was a free upgrade for those versions, and Windows 11 was a free update for Windows 10. But there was no free update to Windows 7 from XP or to XP from 98.
1 likeAs for why the Windows XP key took longer: Windows XP was the first version of Windows to actually use Windows Activation.

1 likeBack in the day: Hi, 3!
I started to use win 7 about a year before it was released. Sure. It was buggy during the beta periods but better than vista :)
2 likesThen, when it got released I got an RTM key from work.
1 likeinitially Windows 8 didn't come with Windows media center anymore, but they sold separate activation keys for people with Windows 8.
this key on it's own would be enough to activate Windows 10 or 11 pro versions.
Microsoft: It's an older code sir, but it checks out
0 likesAlso to get a windows 11 Account on the Pro version you can select "Setup for an Organisation" and then "I'd like to join a Domain" and then it will let u create a local account
1 likeI found that on Windows 10 you can personalize without activating if you are not connected to the internet and you do it early enough.

0 likesI would have liked to see if Windows Vista activated Win11. Though I suspect not.
1 likeIf you'll recall, Windows 10 upgrades were allowed for free from Win7, and Win 8, so presumably, Windows can parse those keys and tie them back to the OS they were originally issued for and the activation server continues to "validate," since those OSes were originally on the "green light" list when Win10 was originally released and pushed as an upgrade.

If you install Win11 Pro using Win 7 Ultimate key
It degrade class, but it's okey.

0 likesI thought this was pretty common knowledge considering as you said Windows 11 uses Windows 10's activation so that would include all Windows 7 and newer keys.
0 likesI rate this video a thumb! Glad MS allows us to use these older keys to "actiwate" Windows 10 and 11. Just remember that a Home key will only activate Windows 10 or 11 Home. 0 likesOh, and in my experience, using the Windows 7 key to activate Windows 10 doesn't actually prevent you from using it on Windows 7. Or, at least, it doesn't if that copy of Windows 7 was already activated.
1 likeI suspect this was so you could go back to Windows 7 if Windows 10 didn't work out.

0 likesNow it seems pretty silly that they skipped 9, doesn't it?

0 likesThere is another way to use a local account when setting up windows. This will work on windows 10. All you need to do is not set up the wi-fi on the computer if it asks you to connect to the wi-fi. Or if you have a ethernet cable in the computer, just unplug it before starting the setup. You can connect to the internet once the setup is complete.
0 likesMicrosoft pushed every Windows 7 user to upgrade to Windows 10. And they even said, all copies of Win 7 purchased up to a certain date will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 for free. Since this Win7 Ulti key was definitely purchased before the deadline, it definitely allows the upgrade to Win 10.
0 likesSince it's also free to upgrade from Win 10 to 11 at any time, in case you have a valid key, those Win 7 keys must work all the way up to Windows 11.

0 likesReally not surprise about Windows 98 or XP not wirking - they're just far too old for the key to activate. There were also no upgrade paths from these older OS'es to anything modern.
0 likesI'm also not surprised that Windows 7 worked just fine.
0 likesEven windows 7 home and basic works with Win 11 Home, just make sure you use the correct version of Windows 11 with the activation key.

it can be said that you already have an activation code that has been upgraded to the latest Windows version.
If not, you cannot use an activation code that has not been upgraded to the latest Windows version.
the activation code will record your motherboard number on the Microsoft server and will remain installed if the activation code is not used again

1 likeWin 7 was upgraded to Win 10 almost a decade ago, thus the keys should be valid.

0 likesIt's common knowledge that MS never abendoned the upgrade path from Win 7, 8 and 8.1 to Win 10.

0 likesIt's kind of logic you can't just cheat and use any random key to activate Windows.
0 likesYou will have to pay your share of using the software - in some way.
(Or you have paid for a key)
This means you must install an early version WITH activation key and then UPDATE from this - which is fully legal.
However it's not always possible as there are limitations on how old versions you can keep updating from.
Note that you can never upgrade from a home to pro version this way - UNLESS the hardware already has a digital license for the upgrade version.
It's complicated, and must be, as any corporation can not work without getting paid for it's products.
like 2001 windows xp??
1 likeIn My case from WIndows Vista I was able to update but 7 later 8 8.1 10 and 11.

Because, what's the point of buying a Windows 11 key on the Microsoft Store, like I did a few weeks ago, if Windows 10 keys (that I also have from the Microsoft Store) still work? 🤦🏻♂️

I suppose if you did an in-place upgrade from Windows XP to Vista somehow, then upgrade that to 7 and from there upgraded to 10, then maybe? Would probably have only worked during the first initial free upgrade though. Because during the free upgrade period it most likely just generated a new key if it considered XP keys invalid by that point. Not sure if doing it now would give you a valid activated state, unless by now you've associated your account with a valid Windows 10 key.

It will continue with "to activate office for mac, press 2"; and then, it will say "to activate any other product, press 3", just press 3 and continue the call, it will work when you give the first group of numbers, it will say "fantastic, now enter block 2" ;)

Hence why i have the top windows 11 professional workstation edition on everything. I was shown how to make these ' pid' folders bu a youtube video many years ago. I’ve even forgotten my name
I don’t know the season
Or what is the reason
I’m standing here holding my blade
A desolate place
Without any trace
It’s only the cold wind I feel
It’s me that I spite
As I stand up and fight
The only thing I know for real
There will be blood-shed
The man in the mirror nods his head
The only one left
Will ride upon the dragon’s back
Because the mountains don’t give back what they take
Oh no
There will be blood-shed
It’s the only thing I’ve ever known
Losing my identity
Wondering have I gone insane
To find the truth in front of me
I must climb this mountain range
Looking downward from this deadly height
And never realizing why I fight

0 likesBy rights you've paid for the chosen OS platform of windows vs apple, linux whatever, so you should own that platform, not keep paying hundreds of dollars each time they decide to bloat it.
0 likesDon't know about you, but I don't have the time nor the money anymore, not to mention health, especially with all these interest rates and inflation to keep playing this game. You can't spy when people are unable to keep going on your roundabout of forking out for this that and the other.

0 likesAnother equally good method is if you have Windows 10 with a key.

0 likesI like some of the transitions, but sometimes they're a bit too much and are seemingly random.

0 likesFun fact: Back when you could still get free Windows product keys from OnTheHub (iirc they stopped offering this in ~2019 though OnTheHub still has other software) I had a few saved.
0 likescontext: onthehub is a service primarily for educational software discounts which used to have free windows product keys for students. the us cyberpatriot organization was one of few non-school organizations to have access.
You can activate windows without any key at all. Just lookup "activate windows cmd script" you can read thigh the script to make sure that there isn't any malware included but the script is basically activatung your windows installation without any key.

0 likesOne of the primary reasons that the product keys from Windows 7 work to activate Windows 11 is that Microsoft doesn’t make much of its revenue selling desktop licenses for consumers.

0 likesYou mention sanctions.
