The TRUTH About Poison Joke ✿

We are getting to a point where anything unexplained is just blamed on Discord.

I often thought that the reason why the Poison Joke was able to do the things it did to the Mane 6 is because just like a lot of the vegetation in the Everfree Forest, the Poison Joke has it's own unique magical properties but luckily individuals like Zecora knows her flora and therefore knows how to handle and or cure the effects of such an unpredictable plant.

I think the Poison Joke affects whatever magic that programs the cutie marks . It's not the plant that's using its brain to infect the ponies but the magic within the cutie marks that is reacting to the poison joke. Applebloom was still a blank flank so that's why she wasn't infected.

Food for thought:
What if the Poison Joke's effect on Zecora was causing her to always talk in rhymes?

Maybe because she loved spouting nonsense or maybe she liked to write poems that specifically didn't rhyme. 🤷‍♀️

Random theory:The poison joke was not created by discord but was created by a young unicorn from Ponyville many moons ago with the cutie mark of mischief and created the flowers to prank his/her classmates who he/she personally hated,but when things got out of hand he/she used magic to transport them to the Everfree forest so that it can be someone else’s problem to deal with

My thought was that poison joke interacted with the magic that's within each of the ponies. If someone like Discord was responsible I'd think that the outcome would be different each time they encountered the flower. The next question is if Posion joke is related to the flower that causes swamp fever

I'm curious to know if poison joke could be permanent. If just stepping in it could alter their bodies but with a cure, could drinking it cause permanent alterations?

This episode clearly showed how much of racists the ponies like the Mane_6 are when they saw Zecora the Zebra since they're friends with Spike who was a Dragon. Do you think the Mane_6 deserved what happened to them when they got near thos flowers and do you think Spike and Zecora should have been best friends throughout the entire MLP FIM show since they feel like outcasts among ponies?

The sad part is that I noticed Sawtooth turning transparent halfway through the video but didn't really think anything of it.

Great theory though. I kind of guessed you'd think Discord was involved; it is absolutely the sort of thing that he would do.

You could do a theory on if there was a alternate timeline after the Ursa Minor visits Ponyville in season 1.

Even without Twilight and the other 5, Trixie would most likely still visit Ponyville, boast about her abilities and about her successfully defeating a Ursa, and then Snips and Snails bringing a Ursa to Ponyville

Only this time, Twilight wasn’t there to send it back. So what would happen?

If this theory really is true, and it twists what a character is most proud of, then poison joke could probably be used against villains like the timeline with Nightmare Moon where she is most proud of her power and such

1. Zecora lived in the everfree longer than any pony did. It's natural that she'd develop a cure for herself before it took effect

2. Whereas Discord being the embodiment of chaos itself could have developed the Poison Joke as one last long lasting prank,
it is possible that it is product of natural evolution as well.

Also invisibility kinda works great for a changeling, because after all changelings can change their appearance, that's their thing, so why not just make their special thing be completely useless?

Before this video, many had considered it as random, or something that was once said.
I mean, Rainbow Dash was once called Rainbow Crash, and she did crash on occasion, but now it is quite frequent. From that, we got the Fallout Equestria version of "killing joke", which sometimes kills. Fluttershy's "I'd like to be a tree" turned her into a tree. Xenith felt like she was an earth pony and her stripes were wounds. Morning Glory was considered an outcast by the pegasi, a Dashite, and so was turned into Rainbow Dash herself, who had a bounty on her head.

I like how Poison Joke happened in season one, got forgotten about until season four, and then was never mentioned again. It's just kinda there for no reason.

Your theory makes a lot of sense, but while were talking about discord, I made a little theory myself. I still stand by the "Grorgar made Discord theory" it just makes sense to me. Because if Discord was a sprit from the tree of harmony, why wouldn't Discord also be a tree? But anyway, I found it interesting when after Discord was reformed, he made from pretty bad choices and foolish decisions. I can't help but think someone else is pulling the strings. These kinds of foolish things from discord mostly come out of no one, but he never gets punished for it. Just scolded and continued with his life. Grogar could have been DEAD. Remember, Terek thought of stories when he was young. Grogar is just a goat, he can't live that long. In an episode, we saw Discord becoming a ghost. Which means ghosts are canon. What if the ghost of Grogar was controlling Discord...? Like lots of ghost posses people. Now I hear you saying "Then why doesn't Grogar control Discord all the time?" Great question. I would think Discord has a great immune system, filtering out anything that wasn't yknow... 100% chaos? And Grogar only strikes when he sees a weak point. But Discord doesn't even know about this. If you sick you wouldn't know unless you showed signs you were sick. Discord just thinks it's a good idea, but it's really someone else pulling the strings... So basically what I think is that Grogar made Discord, but it didn't go well. He went rouge, running off and taking Equestria over. Grogar didn't approve, but he decided to let it go. Until he got turned to stone. He broke free but before he took over, I would think he used the KILLED Grogar. So he could be free. To do whatever he wants. Grogar is mad. His own creation, taking over possibly the whole world had the Main 6 not stopped him. So, Grogar puts the elements of harmony in an easy place to find. Couple of dumb discord episodes later (And amazing ones of course because Discord is great) And then season 9. Grogar actually wants to be himself so he makes a 4 pack of villain's. Sombra fails, and then there are 3. But once Discord is revealed, Grogar did his damage, and leaves the body. I'm sure that the main 6 eventually stop Grogar. If you ever use my theory for a video please give me credit, thank you! But that's just what I think :)

But then again, if Discord really did plant the poison joke, and Zecora knows a cure for it, then could it means she knew Discord at some point or even heard of him?

I think it is both scientific and magic.

Magic is just a common characteristic on the animals that inhabit FiM's world, so it would be reasonable to think that animals aren't the only organisms that evolved to control magic.

i would love to know how poison joke would affect discord, would he become a normal pony or not? maybe he'd loose his magic or be immune and nothing happen

edit: what if cause zecora is always in the everfree forest her rhyming speech is the result of constant exposure to the poison joke, like she used to speak normally but then the joke was her speech being messed up, just a thought

So I have this alternative universe theory about poison joke:

There was 11 "gods", called Colours. One of them was Harmonia who had sacrificed herself to stop her siblings from fighting (this is major summary) and when she died - end of harmony became Disharmony - Discord was created.
One of the first pranks he has done were on other gods rather than mortal ponies who haven't really developed yet. Thus he infused some of the flowers with his chaos to create poison joke

~~After which out of spite the goddess of nature created even stronger version called Joker Vines which caused Discord to turn into physical creature~~

The name is actually very fitting seeing the effects it makes a cruel joke on the pony that absorbs the toxin. I wonder if perhaps zecora was cursed to talk in rhyme.

Maybe it's related to cutie mark magic, too? As a pony's cutie mark is probably tied to whatever they're most proud of. Do we have any examples of it affecting non-ponies?

Would it have been awesome if we saw the origin of Discord in the MLP FIM show to see what makes him tick along with what the other Zebras like Zecora are like in the MLP FIM show?

yay! Another video! I never really thought about poison joke, but what you say makes A LOT of sense!

I like to think that, along with Discord, there may be something similar to fae spirits existing in the universe. Maybe their spirit is in the form of the poison joke, or it's one of their creations. It wouldn't be a totally unrealistic headcannon, since the writers have used multiple other mythologies and theologies as inspiration for the MLP universe.

Thanks for sharing another interesting video with us, Sawtooth! I agree with the idea that poison joke somehow targets one's most valued trait. Spike uses his hands a lot, and he seems to like being helpful. If he were exposed to poison joke, maybe his hands would turn into mitten hands or pony hooves. Or maybe Spike would go full pony.
It's entirely possible that poison joke was "naturally" produced by the Everfree Forest when you take things like zap apples and those swamp fever flowers into account. Still, I can imagine Discord experimenting and coming up with a pranking plant. The plunderseeds weren't eradicated by the Elements (until later) for some reason, so the poison joke might have survived as well. I can also see Discord coming up with zap apples just to make apples a little more exciting.
It's funny how the Everfree Forest is very natural when it comes to uncontrolled weather and plant growth but also very unnatural when it comes to the magical flora and fauna inside. One of the MLP comics apparently mentions that the Everfree Forest was an herb garden until a powerful being named Cosmos did something to it. I guess that isn't the case in the show since Cosmos's changes probably would have been undone by the royal sisters and the Elements along with Discord's chaos. Still, the idea is interesting.

i think i once saw a theory that zecora's rhyming was a result of poison joke, but after the effects wor off, the rhyming just kind of stuck

I totally agree with you that Discord is behind poison yoke, and I think I know why he created them.

In the comics (issue 75-78), there was another draconequus named Cosmos. She was once Discord's girlfriend. But unlike Discord, who just like to prank and troll ponies, Cosmos wanted to hurt them. After her first defeat, some of Cosmos' creations were left behind. One of them was the Eeverfree Forest (It was a herb garden). And if Cosmos created the Everfree Forest, she might have created a more evil type of poison joke. And to prevent Cosmos' evil magic, Discord might have turned Cosmos' plant into the poison joke.

(And yes, I know that you're not a big fan of the comics.)

I love that you still make these videos. It's really interesting to dive into the MLP universe.

You forgot the fact that the effect the Joke has on the victim is also done in a way to make a pun, as pointed out by Spike. Like perhaps Zecora looses her sense of rhythm and rhyme by getting a bad case of the hiccups, dubbing her as Hiccora. I also believe that the Joke simply have intelligence of their own and no one is behind it

I mean, kinda obvious that this is something that Discord would create. Especially when considering the fact that he needs chaos to even exist. Poison joke is probably just one of many ways he ensures that there will be some chaos around. And of course so he can have a laugh without knowing ahead of time what is going to happen.

I've always suspected Poison Joke is connected to Discord in some way.

It's actually funny coincidence that in the dubbing I know Poison Joke is translated to "charm you a joke" which led me to thinking that those flowers are magical and made out of Everfree Forest magic and only made me question if and how Everfree magic is any different than the general Equestrian magic. But after some time I found out that it can be translated as "devil's joke" if you put two of three syllables together which made me think if any villain that has been trapped in Tartarus for ages (many many moons) had any impact on the ground in Equestria while trying to escape this way making weird/dangerous plants grow all over the Everfree Forest. It's as if that forest was trying to focus all cursed/evil magic in one place making it one very dangerous place to hang around while protecting the rest of Equestria. I really like to believe my little theory because anytime soon it won't be contradicted unless new generation ponies will find and study them (which I still don't believe will happen so soon).

I definitely agree with your theory. One thing I have to add though. Zecora told fluttershy that she would mix a brew to give her the same effect from the poisin joke, so It might not be the same all the time. To go along with what you were saying, it's effect might change slightly as the person changes slighty. For example, if I'm a really good swimmer, and I can't stay a float from poision joke, or mabye In float every time I touch the water to make it more joke- like, then If I drop swimming latter in life and do basketball, and I'm really good at it, my joke might be basketball related.

I doubt Zecora's speech would be affected in such a way by the poison joke. The comics note that Zecora only started to speak in rhyme in order to better practice magic, as most spells were written and recited in rhyme. If her speech was affected she was likely either speak in reverse or literal magic words like 'abracadbra.'

This makes me wonder if Discord could be behind zap apples too then, since they are a case of 'magic has weird rules that it seems to make up and you have to follow them' with, if not chaotic results, at least silly ones.

2:45 I don't think anything should've happened to zecora to begin with since she isn't even a pony! Also I think that's the reason she came to the everfree forest in the first place, because none of the plants that affect ponies in strange ways could effect her. That way she could use the plants to make potions. Hope this helps :)

For a moment, I thought it was going to keep Sawtooth from changing forms, but then I saw that they were disappearing. Guess you really showed me!
But as for Zecora, just like Puppygirlman18 said, it could've caused her to only speak in rhymes. While it may not seem too bad at first, you try speaking in nothing but rhymes and see how you feel. It would also make sense as to why she didn't seem to be any different after she was with the others in the same patch (it's been a while since I've seen the episode, I could be wrong), because she was already affected by it.

I like to think it interacts with their cutie marks or associated individual magic. Those are highly nebulous and poorly understood, but they do almost always tend to align with a pony's values and personality. I wonder what would happen if Trouble Shoes got poison joked 👀

Hey Sawtooth Waves, this might seem random, but I didn't know where to ask this. What are your thoughts on Flim and Flam in their first episode? I have always heard people say that " they almost took the apple farm," but that isn't at all what happened in the episode. They are just a business that tried to sell apple cider when another business couldn't keep up with supply. Even that deal they tried to make with Applejack wasn't that bad. A 75-25 split would actually still make them more money if that giant line is anything to go by.

After that, they were just business people. I mean, they even waited until the apple family was done selling cider for the day before they showed up. They didn't have to do that, and then Applejack stole their cider and claimed it was made from Apple family apples. If they bought the apples beforehand, they have a right to use them, and Applejack has no right to stop them from selling the cider. Though if they stole the apples, that is a whole other conversation.

Honestly, the only part I think they went too far was when they made it an "exclusive" right to sell cider in ponyvill. Though you could also argue that the Apples were extremely hostile towards a competitor and wanted to drive them away, Flim and flam are just doing the same to them. Plus, I really doubt they would actually lose the farm. She says that all the time, yet they always are selling a LOT of apples. I know farming overhead in real life is insane, but they don't have any large equipment, and the apples seem to grow themselves. The episode all about apple jack's chores were mostly non-apple-related things, like feeding pigs or watering the carrots. Plus, the giant farm has only family working on it.

Even aside from all of that, Flim and Flam would need apples from somewhere, so either the apple family sells to them and makes money that way, or they refuse to sell the apples and lose the farm from pure pride.

The plant isn't random, Zecora was shown to be able to control the affects and such. You can also notes what they were doing before with Fluttershy holding her head low making it get into her lungs/her vocal cords and Rarity most likely brushed her coat/Mane causing the affects of it growing out uncontrollably and so on and so forth.

I have to rewatch but that's for later.

1:28, the fact that it has the same effect on Fluttershy the second time would indicate not intelligence, it could be assume that it reacts with very perticular proteins if we accept the idea of biological determinism in the MLP universe
If the plant wanted to prank people consioully it would have had the same effect twice on Fluttershy since it was not a source of shame anymore

I agree and this video was amazing, but Zecora probably wouldn’t have that affect, because it gives more of a physical effect. Maybe it somehow gets into the nerve information from the body as it travels around, and causes a “allergic reaction”. Just how you physically turned invisible. This flower only physical and not mental.

That’s why I don’t think it would affect Zecora’s rhyming skill, but more like pinkie’s thing where her younger got swollen. Still that was hilarious seeing Zecora fail at the rhyme, and the other ponies reaction!

Imagine how they would act if discord made it a personality switching flower!!

Sawtooth, i need you to see this, i have a screenshot of the map table at the time when sunset, rainbow and twilight visited from the human world, there was a bunch of cool stuff they had layed out such as the storm kings staff, the stick starlight used for the cult, and even boneless that was seen turned into a key and furthur destroyed upon creating the castle, this means twilight has all the other six's things and they were not destroyed, contact me for more information if your interested in this

ps: you were right, twilight went into the portal and came out a Unicorn, wait, later on in another equestria girls movie, sunset gets her memory erased and her friends use friendship to bring it back, twilight sprouts wings and a horn there, this means she did something to become an alicorn during that time period

I had an idea for a video, at the end of the final episode of the series discord is shown opening portals to fluttershy's sanctuary. How does that work exactly? How does he choose which animals need a portal? Is it just any animal in need of a home or is there a call they can make? Might be something to theorize about.

I have my own theory, though my 'evidence' if you can call it that, is understandably weak given the limited information we're given. Anyway, I think Poison Joke's effect could also be based on how the plant and the victim interact. What 'evidence' I do have is as follows...


Pinkie Pie didn't stop flapping her gums the entire time she was frolicking in the flowers. As a side note, at one point while thinking about this theory, I jokingly thought that maybe even the Poison Joke wanted her to shut up.

Rainbow Dash flew through the flowers at one point, and afterwards stayed airborne the entire rest of the scene. I know she flies more often than not, but at the start of the scene she was standing in the flowers just like the others.

Twilight's horn was tapped a few times by Rainbow Dash, specifically with the hoof that had the most contact with the actual flowering part of the plant. Notably, Rainbow Dash also threw a verbal jab at Twilight about her magic while she was poking her horn. There's also her magical soapbox moment.


Meanwhile Applejack and Rarity have situations that are a bit more abstract, but it was what I saw of Applejack that really laid the foundation of this theory.


Rarity was stepping carefully through the Poison Joke. Like I said, abstract. A bit of a stretch too, I know.

Now as I said, it was Applejack's personal joke that led me to consider this alternative. Applejack spent a lot of the time she was standing in the Poison Joke scolding Applebloom while emphasizing her own position as the big sister, while having her little sister atop her back. She was talking down to Applebloom while looking up at her. Again, abstract and a bit of a stretch.


Perhaps ironically, Fluttershy is the one for whom my 'evidence' is weakest. Ironic in that she's the only one to go back for a second dose. The two brief times she's seen while they're all standing in the Poison Joke is in a group shot, she doesn't say anything. It's not nothing, but it's the weakest of them all as I said, and that's saying a lot considering the stronger arguments in question. Using this alternate theory, I'd surmise the Poison Joke gave her a reason to keep quiet.

Speaking of Fluttershy, am I the only one who found it weird that she was the only one to not have any visible symptoms.

Okay for real- can we just talk about how perfectly PLANNED Sawtooth is. THEY HAVE PLOT ARMOR. This enby pony had turned to stone for a thousand more moons, they are also more ammune to poison joke, as how slowly the toxins affect them. Also Sawtooth you are turning invisible because you love getting attention and being seen. After all you are always in your videos are you not?

I honestly always kinda assumed the whole Everfree Forest was a product of Discord. It's known to be strange and "unnatural" (to ponies, it's partially entirely natural by our world's standards), and with how much chaos springs forth from it, it just kinda feels like an easy thing to pin on that noodle.

1:22 Zecora said that she could use Poison Joke to make a potion that would replicate the effect it had on Fluttershy the first time around. That seems to imply the effects of the plant are unpredictable to some degree and it was Zecora's influence specifically that made Fluttershy's voice deep again, not just raw exposure to it.

The ending I find funny because saw didn't notice till the end that even changelings are effected by poison joke 🤣 I guess them turning invisible means they are narcissistic and love seeing themselves

Discord's magic targetted a different aspect of their personalities though. And technically, he only used magic on one of them. Fluttershy was the only one that he directly used his magic on. And with Twilight's situation as an example, Discord had next to no part with her corruption directly.

At the surface level, Discord and Poison Joke seems the same. But if you look deeper, you see that it's not that simple. Poison Joke only affected physical traits while Discord affected their minds.

While I'm here, I'd like to talk again about my comment on the video about the forgotten timeline, the original timeline going on without Twilight, Spike and Starlight who traveled in time.
I wondered, if the time travelers ended up in a timeline that isn't theirs, tho identical, where are their alter egos from this timeline?
And then I realized... they traveled in time too.
That means from here, the timesplit turned into a loop that creates timesplits. Because these Starlight, Twilight and Spike from this new timeline that is identical to the original but isn't, also created a Chrysalis timeline, a Nightmare Moon timeline, a Discord timeline (etc) and a timeline that is identical to theirs but is a separate one. And in this timeline too their alter egos traveled in time and created these timelines...
So from here there's an infinity of timelines created, of each outcome we saw in the series. But there still is only one original timeline missing the time travelers... And that's how I blew my own mind.

But more recently I thought of a solution to abort this chaos.
I think likely that great minds and sorcerers as Starlight, Twilight, Starswirl and Sunburst (and Stygian, and probably other intelligent characters I don't think of in the moment) would come to talk about such a big thing and spot the problem, and organize an expedition through the timelines to do so the time travelers go back to their own timeline after the final travel. Their travel would then apply in a timeloop where the otherwise abandoned timeline was actually never abandoned, and....
Nevermind, I thought it more while writing and I see it actually doesn't solve the infinite loop of splits.
But hey, it's a good start!

The expedition could do so the last travel actually leads to the original timeline, to create a loop where the travelers were actually always here at the rainboom in the original timeline, and the new timeline that is identical but is a separate one is not created, so there is no other timeline where Starlight, Twilight and Spike traveled in time.

I agree with most of what you've said here, but there's one little nitpick I'd like to make. When Fluttershy is exposed to Poison Joke for a second time, Zecora actually makes it into a drink, specifically so they can make sure she gets the deep voice if I remember right. This shows that the effects aren't the same for each pony every time, otherwise Fluttershy could just go step in the Poison Joke patch again.

This theory does makes sense as in the comics the everfree forest was just a garden until discord and cosmos(discord's ex) turned equestria upside down

Feeding into the yin-yang harmony-disharmony idea with the Spirit of Chaos himself and the Spirit of Harmony being the means to balance things out, after the parallels are created to fight back against one another (Tree of Harmony / Everfree Forest, Friendship Fire / Windigos, etc.), and the Elements of Disharmony idea that’s been floating around since the very dawn of MLP-air-time, there could be some parallel with the Pillars, too.

Didn’t Mistmane have a flower as her representation/element? The Flower of Beauty, aka Mistmane’s Flower.

What if the poison joke (I always want to say “poison yolk”, it’s really annoying) was created, by Discord or not, to act against Mistmane’s Flower of Beauty? After all, the “jokes” that the flowers played seemed, for lack of a better word, ugly.

Maybe the entire Everfree forest was created by Discord so that he could attempt to stop the princess from finding the elements of harmony the first time.

I just thought of something is rarity really the element of generosity because when discord tried to take over and celestial handed the mane 6 a case which protected the elements of harmony rarity said these exact words “you can keep the elements, I’ll take that case” giving up the fate of equestria for a jewelry box that was expressing greed not generosity and that was before discord changed her. In fact we’ve seen rainbow dash not being loyal in fact she is a sore winner, gloater, and a sore loser, pinkie seems to express more magical properties than twilight, and applejack wasn’t always honest none of the mane 6 have really expressed there element throughout the entire series even fluttershy isn’t kind when she needs to be. Even when they really try to express there element we see them go back to the way they were. Are the mane 6 actually the elements of harmony that they say they are. Maybe twilight have the wrong elements to the wrong ponies on day 1. Who knows. Bro hoof 🤜🤛

The Ever Free is a magical forest. Who can say it is not to make such plants or even animals. Timber wolves are only seen there. Zap apple as well. I have not the answer to these questions.
