At the time of recording Windflower, both Herb Ellis and Remo Palmier were very established in the world of Jazz Guitar. The earliest work I could find for Herb Ellis was playing Roy Eldridge's 1953 rockin' chair album, with Herb's parts recorded in late 1952, and the earliest for Remo was Groovin' High Dizzy Gillespie, a compilation of recordings from 1955-1947. I also learned that Remo reportedly left jazz clubs for nearly 27 years, instead of playing for Arthur Godfrey's radio show, from 1945 to 1972, contributing to the occasional song/album. Herb managed to convince Rem to play with him at a jazz festival in 1977, which led to this recording a year later. So by 1978, they both had more than 25 years of experience in the piece and decided to work together on this rather stripped-down album.
Windflower consists of 2 guitars, bass and drums, it's literally just a simple foundation for 2 guitarists to play whatever they want, each alternating like lead and rhythm, moving back and forth, unsurprisingly sounding like two old friends are paying together. They haven't written a single song and are just performing an unusual collection of songs they enjoy, from the title track, written by Sara Cassey and first performed by Hank Jones in 1975, to Antonio Carlos Jobm's Trist and even Danny Boy' yep yes. The music is airy and warm, with a distinct focus on the middles to enhance the guitars, although this blurs the sound of whoever plays chords to the beat. There's also a strong Swing vibe coming out of these songs, 2 obviously just playing everything that seems fun and enjoyable to them, there's no need to try to make up time or play anything strenuous.
So it comes down to personal taste, do you like your music to be more structured or are you happy to listen to jam sessions? If you're already a swing-jazz fan, I'm sure you'll get something out of this, the music is bouncy and easy to groove. But if, like me, you're not a fan, this record probably won't be a great introduction, the production is a little basic and although I can appreciate their skill, I don't find the songs that interesting and when I do, it's usually because I know and enjoy the original version. So, if you like what I described, I would recommend you to check out, but I don't think I can give this album a higher rating because I just didn't get much out of it.ladislav&zivanovic...

La musique est aérée et chaude, avec un accent distinct sur les milieux pour améliorer les guitares, bien que cela brouille le son de celui qui joue des accords au rythme. Theres aussi une forte ambiance Swing qui sort de ces chansons, 2 évidemment juste jouer tout ce qui semble amusant et agréable pour eux, il n’y a pas besoin d’essayer de rattraper le temps ou de jouer quelque chose d’intense.
Donc, cela se résume à un goût personnel, aimez-vous que votre musique soit plus structurée ou êtes-vous heureux d’écouter des jam sessions? Si vous êtes déjà un fan de swing-jazz, je suis sûr que vous en tirerez quelque chose, la musique est gonflable et facile à groover. Mais si, comme moi, vous n’êtes pas un fan, ce disque ne sera probablement pas une excellente introduction, la production est un peu basique et bien que je puisse apprécier leurs compétences, je ne trouve pas les chansons aussi intéressantes et quand je le fais, c’est généralement parce que je connais et apprécie la version originale.
