@@manuelhuber194 Vista isn't bad but Microsoft pushed it so, many dual cores computer in that era didn't run very well. I had Dell XPS with Vista was decent because it got quad cores and Nvidia 8600. I know Vista is extremely slow in many computers that I encountered in past.
It was most manufacturer's or fault for not enough testing against hardware bottleneck to better experience with quality and performance, or Microsoft's fault for not bump up on system minimal requirements. I've seen Windows Vista machine with 2 dual cores "1.5ghz" and 1gb. It's not enough for daily usage.
Edit: I forgot Windows Vista has issues with memory cache where they will collect too much cache to slow down whole computer in few months. Need more bandwidth of RAM then slowdown will become unnoticeable.

Recently, we as the team of software development had a sudden meeting due to some recent feedback we received since the last time we had in the year 2000 from bug reports system about Windows Explorer program on one of our development build, Microsoft Windows Codename Whistler.

There's some setting in Windows 10, I can't remember what setting it was but I found "automagically" in the description. Probably got patched out, might still be there somewhere though. I much prefer the aesthetic of Whistler to what we got in XP, maybe because it appeals to modern sensibilities. This feels like an evolution of Windows 2000 (which I prefer stylistically) as opposed to the revolution that was XP.
I am not Obi-Wan. Now leave. Some of the metro apps are useful to some people nonetheless, for example, in my old ASUS machine, because it was so unstable i was forced to either replace the OS or use Ubuntu.
CreeperGuy721-92 IDK The settings app is UWP/Metro 2.0, is space wasting and it looks like it was designed with tablets only in mind, makes the UI look so inconsistent, has less "control" over actual settings than the legacy control panel, and has almost zero icons when compared to the colourful ones of the control panel. I just put Windows 10 icons on Windows 7, as those icons are one of the only things I like about Windows 10. Putting metro apps in a window doesn't make it mouse and keyboard friendly.
Aidan Chappelle Open Shell is a good start menu replacement. I even use it on Windows 7, and currently use it on 8.1. I also use it on Windows 10 virtual machines. It's also free.
I've heard Windows 8.1 kinda sucks. I've never used it but I think it's just Windows 8 with a new start menu. Other than that it's the same OS. They did a lot wrong after XP, except Windows 7. I liked Windows 7. Then they ended it.
catRLBX _stuff I installed it over windows 10, then installed Open Shell (Classic Shell but open source and is being actively developed) because i hated the start screen. It was because the control panel was ruined in windows 10.
Edit: More things in windows 10 that forced me to downgrade: - 1909 File Explorer Search, which is disgusting. Huge File Explorer address bar that looks like it's for tablet mode or Windows 10 X and some UWP search bar that has features removed, takes extra clicks, and is harder to disable. You need mach2.exe to disable it, and you need a command prompt, and some random string of numbers. If you're unfortunate and you upgraded to 1909, run this: mach2.exe -disable 18755234, and you have to restart explorer.exe or sign out and sign in, or even have to restart. It's prone to reverting. so run it every startup or just have it always run it the background using a batch file. If you want it to be automated, use task scheduler. - There is no more registry tweak to bring back classic User Account Control prompt. - I had to install StartisBack, which has taskbar issues with Open Shell, to get Win32, not "UWP" (Metro 2.0) taskbar jump lists and the registry tweak that brings the classic clock back. Also, Startisback is paid. - Immersive menus (which have very low contrast and is huge) can't be disabled using registry unlike in 1803 and below using registry tweak.
The truth about 8.1 (and some things about 10 that are horrible):
- The start screen can be replaced, install Open Shell or some other replacement and be done with it. - The network flyout can also be replaced, use PE Network manager. - I don't care about virtual desktops, Win Tab switching, a new registry editor, more options in task manager, and other pointless stuff that only relates to the horrible Metro 2.0 "apps". - Disabling dwm.exe is more "deadly" than in 8.1, in 8.1 you only have no login screen, and some black bar on the side that you can remove. In 10 there is lots of things missing thanks to Control Panel depreciating and Metro 2.0 integrating. - Even if you don't disable dwm.exe, you're still going to have big buttons, which is horrible for custom theming if you want to make it look like previous Windows versions unless if it's a mac theme or some weird other theme. - Full screen metro "apps"? Disable metro and switch to Win32 only. Search for "Fxxk metro", run ImmersiveKill.exe and no metro will run. - The start menu in Windows 10 is bad and horrible, worse than even Technical Preview or even codename Threshold. I still have to use Open Shell on Windows 10. I even use it on Windows 7 because it's such a good replacement.
Edit 2: Found out that Classic Shell 4.3.0 and StartIsBack work perfectly fine, just that I needed a blank start button in StartIsBack.

whistler was one of my fav systems, for me is the one where microsoft eXPerimented the most with the user interface. i miss that little thing in one of the pre-rc builds where the windows logo in the logon actually was animated, i would killed for that in the release version back in the day. History of XP: They started working on the earliest protoype, Neptune. And they then made Odyssey. Odyssey was the Home verson, Neptune was the professional version. They worked on both, but then they merged them to Whistler. They worked on Whistler, and then they released Windows XP. Fun Fact: Windows XP's codename was named Whistler, a mountain next to a bar named Longhorn, which was Vista's codename, and next to the bar was Blackcomb, windows 7's codename.

Just downloaded the image and tried to install. Found an easier way. Actually, you don't need Windows 98 boot disk to start installation. The ISO is bootable already.
Darko Stašević I tried install some old betas to VirtualBox. VB hasn't BIOS and you can't change time and date, but every old version of Windows working, even it has timebomb.

Some guy installed windows 10, I installed 1 lite version, wasn't well, installed THE LITE VERSION THAT WAS THE BEST, then installed 7, I then installed 10.

1 likeCreeperGuy721-92 IDK The settings app is UWP/Metro 2.0, is space wasting and it looks like it was designed with tablets only in mind, makes the UI look so inconsistent, has less "control" over actual settings than the legacy control panel, and has almost zero icons when compared to the colourful ones of the control panel. I just put Windows 10 icons on Windows 7, as those icons are one of the only things I like about Windows 10. Putting metro apps in a window doesn't make it mouse and keyboard friendly.

3 likescatRLBX _stuff I installed it over windows 10, then installed Open Shell (Classic Shell but open source and is being actively developed) because i hated the start screen. It was because the control panel was ruined in windows 10.
3 likesEdit: More things in windows 10 that forced me to downgrade:
- 1909 File Explorer Search, which is disgusting. Huge File Explorer address bar that looks like it's for tablet mode or Windows 10 X and some UWP search bar that has features removed, takes extra clicks, and is harder to disable. You need mach2.exe to disable it, and you need a command prompt, and some random string of numbers. If you're unfortunate and you upgraded to 1909, run this: mach2.exe -disable 18755234, and you have to restart explorer.exe or sign out and sign in, or even have to restart. It's prone to reverting. so run it every startup or just have it always run it the background using a batch file. If you want it to be automated, use task scheduler.
- There is no more registry tweak to bring back classic User Account Control prompt.
- I had to install StartisBack, which has taskbar issues with Open Shell, to get Win32, not "UWP" (Metro 2.0) taskbar jump lists and the registry tweak that brings the classic clock back. Also, Startisback is paid.
- Immersive menus (which have very low contrast and is huge) can't be disabled using registry unlike in 1803 and below using registry tweak.
The truth about 8.1 (and some things about 10 that are horrible):
- The start screen can be replaced, install Open Shell or some other replacement and be done with it.
- The network flyout can also be replaced, use PE Network manager.
- I don't care about virtual desktops, Win Tab switching, a new registry editor, more options in task manager, and other pointless stuff that only relates to the horrible Metro 2.0 "apps".
- Disabling dwm.exe is more "deadly" than in 8.1, in 8.1 you only have no login screen, and some black bar on the side that you can remove. In 10 there is lots of things missing thanks to Control Panel depreciating and Metro 2.0 integrating.
- Even if you don't disable dwm.exe, you're still going to have big buttons, which is horrible for custom theming if you want to make it look like previous Windows versions unless if it's a mac theme or some weird other theme.
- Full screen metro "apps"? Disable metro and switch to Win32 only. Search for "Fxxk metro", run ImmersiveKill.exe and no metro will run.
- The start menu in Windows 10 is bad and horrible, worse than even Technical Preview or even codename Threshold. I still have to use Open Shell on Windows 10. I even use it on Windows 7 because it's such a good replacement.
Edit 2: Found out that Classic Shell 4.3.0 and StartIsBack work perfectly fine, just that I needed a blank start button in StartIsBack.

Darko Stašević I tried install some old betas to VirtualBox. VB hasn't BIOS and you can't change time and date, but every old version of Windows working, even it has timebomb.
