It has been a long time since we saw the undisputed master of a capella singing in Montreal. Now the author of Don't Worry Be Happy will return to Place des Arts as part of the Montreal Jazz Festival!
For the occasion, Bobby McFerrin will perform the pieces of his brilliant album circlesongs as part of its 20th anniversary.
Biografija
Roditelji su mu bili pjevači: njegov otac, Robert McFerrin Sr., bio je prvi afroamerički operni pjevač koji je pjevao u Metropolitan Operi u New Yorku.1
Surađivao je i s drugim velikim jazz glazbenicima poput pijanistice Chick Coree ili klasičnih glazbenika kao što je violončelist Yo-Yo Ma.
Izveo je tematsku pjesmu za The Cosby Show (skladao Bill Cosby) 1987. godine i improvizirao pjesmu Knicka Knacka, jedan od prvih Pixarovih kratkih filmova, 1989. godine.
Godine 1988. njegova pjesma Turtle Shoes može se čuti u suradnji s Herbiejem Hancockom (s albuma Spontani izumi iz 1986.) u filmu Jumeaux.
Osim vokalne karijere, Bobby McFerrin imenovan je 1994. godine glazbenim smjerom Komornog orkestra Svetog Pavla iz Minnesote, što je mjesto posebno stvoreno za njega.

Scenske tehnike
Bobby McFerrin ne predviđa često što će pjevati na pozornici, većina njegovih nastupa potpuno je improvizirana.
Na početku karijere započeo je obradama pjesama Beatlesa (Blackbird, From Me to You), vrlo je inspiriran kantatama Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Zatim se potpuno posvetio improvizaciji, od kojih su neke snimljene uživo na pozornici (Spontani izumi).
Tako publici nudi motive nota koje treba ponoviti dok improvizira na vrhu. Publiku pretvara u pravi zbor (čak i s nekoliko glasova) bez ikakve pripreme i igra ulogu solista. Zanimljiv slučaj: onaj u kojem Bobby tumači Prvi uvod u Bachov dobro raspoloženi Clavier i publiku, koja naravno prije nije bila upozorena, pjeva Ave Mariju koju je Charles Gounod dodao na vrh 18507. godine.
Koristi procese poput pentatonske ljestvice gdje označava prvu notu na mjestu svojih nogu, zatim note koje odgovaraju različitim pokretima s lijeva na desno dok ga tjera da pjeva svojoj publici.
Maksimalno koristi mogućnosti svog mikrofona: Odmiče ga kako bi smanjio treble i dobitak i približava ga kada koristi ritmove koji zahtijevaju bas. To je stoga kontinuirani naprijed-natrag, simulirajući odjeke svojim grkljanom, iznenadne derescendose koji oponašaju potencijal instrumenata. Biography
His parents were singers: his father, Robert McFerrin Sr., was the first African-American opera singer to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.1
He has also collaborated with other great jazz musicians such as pianist Chick Corea, or classical musicians such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
He performed the theme song for The Cosby Show (composed by Bill Cosby) in 1987 and improvised Knick Knack's song, one of Pixar's first short films, in 1989.
In 1988, his song Turtle Shoes can be heard in collaboration with Herbie Hancock (from the album Spontaneous Inventions of 1986) in the film Jumeaux.
In addition to his vocal career, Bobby McFerrin was appointed in 1994 to the musical direction of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra of Minnesota, a position specially created for him.
On the private side, Bobby McFerrin had three children with Debbie Green2:
his eldest son Taylor McFerrin is a songwriter, music producer, beatboxer and multi-instrumentalist. He released an album in 2014 Early Riser3,4.
his daughter Madison McFerrin is also a singer, songwriter and producer5. She has released two albums (Finding Foundations: vol I and vol II).

Stage techniques
Bobby McFerrin does not often predict what he will sing on stage, the majority of his shows are entirely improvised.
He started at the beginning of his career with covers of Beatles songs (Blackbird, From Me to You), he is very inspired by the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. He then devoted himself totally to improvisation, some of which were recorded live on stage (Spontaneous Inventions).
He thus offers the audience motifs of notes to repeat while he improvises on top. He transforms the audience into a real choir (even with several voices) without any preparation, and plays the role of the soloist. An interesting case: the one where Bobby interprets the First Prelude to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and the audience, which of course has not been warned before, sings the Ave Maria that Charles Gounod had added on top in the years 18507.
He uses processes such as the pentatonic scale where he indicates the first note at the location of his legs, then the notes corresponding to the various movements from left to right while making him sing to his audience.
He makes maximum use of the capabilities of his microphone: He moves it away to reduce treble and gain and brings it closer when he uses rhythms requiring bass. It is therefore a continuous back and forth, simulating echoes with its larynx, sudden derescendos that imitate the potential of the instruments. He also places his microphone at the level of the lymph nodes, which brings out the bass of his voice. At this location of the microphone he can even sing two voices simultaneously (Drive - The Collection (2007)).
His gestures often mimic stringed instruments or winds which sometimes makes the audience laugh. Concerts

Biographie
Ses parents étaient chanteurs : son père, Robert McFerrin Sr., est le premier chanteur d'opéra afro-américain à chanter au Metropolitan Opera de New York1.
Il a aussi collaboré avec d'autres grands musiciens de jazz comme le pianiste Chick Corea, ou de classique comme le violoncelliste Yo-Yo Ma.
Il a interprété la chanson qui générique du Cosby Show (composée par Bill Cosby) en 1987 et improvisé celle de Knick Knack, un des premiers courts métrages des studios Pixar, en 1989.
En 1988, on peut entendre son morceau Turtle Shoes en collaboration avec Herbie Hancock (tiré de l'album Spontaneous Inventions de 1986) dans le film Jumeaux.
En complément de sa carrière vocale, Bobby McFerrin fut nommé en 1994 à la direction musicale du Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra du Minnesota, poste spécialement créé à son intention.

Techniques de scène
Bobby McFerrin ne prévoit pas souvent ce qu'il va chanter sur scène, la majorité de ses spectacles sont entièrement improvisés.
Il a commencé au début de sa carrière avec des reprises de morceaux des Beatles (Blackbird, From Me to You), il s'inspire beaucoup des cantates de Johann Sebastian Bach. Il s'est ensuite totalement adonné à l'improvisation dont certaines ont été enregistrées en direct sur scène (Spontaneous Inventions).
Il propose ainsi au public des motifs de notes à répéter tandis que lui improvise par-dessus. Il transforme le public en vraie chorale (même avec plusieurs voix) sans aucune préparation, et lui joue le rôle du soliste. Un cas intéressant : celui où Bobby interprète le Premier prélude du Clavier bien tempéré de Bach et le public, qui n'a bien sûr pas été prévenu avant, chante l’Ave Maria que Charles Gounod avait ajouté par-dessus dans les années 18507.
Il utilise des procédés tel que l'échelle pentatonique où il indique la première note à l'emplacement de ses jambes, puis les notes correspondant aux divers déplacements de gauche à droite tout en le faisant chanter à son auditoire.
Il utilise au maximum les capacités de son micro : Il l'éloigne pour diminuer les aigus et le gain et le rapproche quand il utilise des rythmes nécessitant des basses. C'est donc un va-et-vient continu, simulant des échos avec son larynx, des décrescendos brusques qui imitent le potentiel des instruments. Il place également son micro au niveau des ganglions, ce qui fait ressortir les basses de sa voix. À cet emplacement du micro il peut même chanter deux voix simultanément (Drive - The Collection (2007)).
Ses gestes miment souvent des instruments à cordes ou des vents ce qui fait parfois rire le public.Concerts

0 likesRoditelji su mu bili pjevači: njegov otac, Robert McFerrin Sr., bio je prvi afroamerički operni pjevač koji je pjevao u Metropolitan Operi u New Yorku.1
Surađivao je i s drugim velikim jazz glazbenicima poput pijanistice Chick Coree ili klasičnih glazbenika kao što je violončelist Yo-Yo Ma.
Izveo je tematsku pjesmu za The Cosby Show (skladao Bill Cosby) 1987. godine i improvizirao pjesmu Knicka Knacka, jedan od prvih Pixarovih kratkih filmova, 1989. godine.
Godine 1988. njegova pjesma Turtle Shoes može se čuti u suradnji s Herbiejem Hancockom (s albuma Spontani izumi iz 1986.) u filmu Jumeaux.
Osim vokalne karijere, Bobby McFerrin imenovan je 1994. godine glazbenim smjerom Komornog orkestra Svetog Pavla iz Minnesote, što je mjesto posebno stvoreno za njega.

Scenske tehnike
Bobby McFerrin ne predviđa često što će pjevati na pozornici, većina njegovih nastupa potpuno je improvizirana.
Na početku karijere započeo je obradama pjesama Beatlesa (Blackbird, From Me to You), vrlo je inspiriran kantatama Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Zatim se potpuno posvetio improvizaciji, od kojih su neke snimljene uživo na pozornici (Spontani izumi).
Tako publici nudi motive nota koje treba ponoviti dok improvizira na vrhu. Publiku pretvara u pravi zbor (čak i s nekoliko glasova) bez ikakve pripreme i igra ulogu solista. Zanimljiv slučaj: onaj u kojem Bobby tumači Prvi uvod u Bachov dobro raspoloženi Clavier i publiku, koja naravno prije nije bila upozorena, pjeva Ave Mariju koju je Charles Gounod dodao na vrh 18507. godine.
Koristi procese poput pentatonske ljestvice gdje označava prvu notu na mjestu svojih nogu, zatim note koje odgovaraju različitim pokretima s lijeva na desno dok ga tjera da pjeva svojoj publici.
Maksimalno koristi mogućnosti svog mikrofona: Odmiče ga kako bi smanjio treble i dobitak i približava ga kada koristi ritmove koji zahtijevaju bas. To je stoga kontinuirani naprijed-natrag, simulirajući odjeke svojim grkljanom, iznenadne derescendose koji oponašaju potencijal instrumenata. 0 likesHis parents were singers: his father, Robert McFerrin Sr., was the first African-American opera singer to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.1
He has also collaborated with other great jazz musicians such as pianist Chick Corea, or classical musicians such as cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
He performed the theme song for The Cosby Show (composed by Bill Cosby) in 1987 and improvised Knick Knack's song, one of Pixar's first short films, in 1989.
In 1988, his song Turtle Shoes can be heard in collaboration with Herbie Hancock (from the album Spontaneous Inventions of 1986) in the film Jumeaux.
In addition to his vocal career, Bobby McFerrin was appointed in 1994 to the musical direction of the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra of Minnesota, a position specially created for him.
On the private side, Bobby McFerrin had three children with Debbie Green2:
his eldest son Taylor McFerrin is a songwriter, music producer, beatboxer and multi-instrumentalist. He released an album in 2014 Early Riser3,4.

Stage techniques
Bobby McFerrin does not often predict what he will sing on stage, the majority of his shows are entirely improvised.
He started at the beginning of his career with covers of Beatles songs (Blackbird, From Me to You), he is very inspired by the cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach. He then devoted himself totally to improvisation, some of which were recorded live on stage (Spontaneous Inventions).
He thus offers the audience motifs of notes to repeat while he improvises on top. He transforms the audience into a real choir (even with several voices) without any preparation, and plays the role of the soloist. An interesting case: the one where Bobby interprets the First Prelude to Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier and the audience, which of course has not been warned before, sings the Ave Maria that Charles Gounod had added on top in the years 18507.
He uses processes such as the pentatonic scale where he indicates the first note at the location of his legs, then the notes corresponding to the various movements from left to right while making him sing to his audience.
He makes maximum use of the capabilities of his microphone: He moves it away to reduce treble and gain and brings it closer when he uses rhythms requiring bass. It is therefore a continuous back and forth, simulating echoes with its larynx, sudden derescendos that imitate the potential of the instruments. He also places his microphone at the level of the lymph nodes, which brings out the bass of his voice. At this location of the microphone he can even sing two voices simultaneously (Drive - The Collection (2007)).
His gestures often mimic stringed instruments or winds which sometimes makes the audience laugh. Concerts

Il a aussi collaboré avec d'autres grands musiciens de jazz comme le pianiste Chick Corea, ou de classique comme le violoncelliste Yo-Yo Ma.
Il a interprété la chanson qui générique du Cosby Show (composée par Bill Cosby) en 1987 et improvisé celle de Knick Knack, un des premiers courts métrages des studios Pixar, en 1989.
En 1988, on peut entendre son morceau Turtle Shoes en collaboration avec Herbie Hancock (tiré de l'album Spontaneous Inventions de 1986) dans le film Jumeaux.

Techniques de scène
Bobby McFerrin ne prévoit pas souvent ce qu'il va chanter sur scène, la majorité de ses spectacles sont entièrement improvisés.
Il a commencé au début de sa carrière avec des reprises de morceaux des Beatles (Blackbird, From Me to You), il s'inspire beaucoup des cantates de Johann Sebastian Bach. Il s'est ensuite totalement adonné à l'improvisation dont certaines ont été enregistrées en direct sur scène (Spontaneous Inventions).
Il propose ainsi au public des motifs de notes à répéter tandis que lui improvise par-dessus. Il transforme le public en vraie chorale (même avec plusieurs voix) sans aucune préparation, et lui joue le rôle du soliste. Un cas intéressant : celui où Bobby interprète le Premier prélude du Clavier bien tempéré de Bach et le public, qui n'a bien sûr pas été prévenu avant, chante l’Ave Maria que Charles Gounod avait ajouté par-dessus dans les années 18507.
Il utilise des procédés tel que l'échelle pentatonique où il indique la première note à l'emplacement de ses jambes, puis les notes correspondant aux divers déplacements de gauche à droite tout en le faisant chanter à son auditoire.
Il utilise au maximum les capacités de son micro : Il l'éloigne pour diminuer les aigus et le gain et le rapproche quand il utilise des rythmes nécessitant des basses. C'est donc un va-et-vient continu, simulant des échos avec son larynx, des décrescendos brusques qui imitent le potentiel des instruments. Il place également son micro au niveau des ganglions, ce qui fait ressortir les basses de sa voix. À cet emplacement du micro il peut même chanter deux voix simultanément (Drive - The Collection (2007)).
Ses gestes miment souvent des instruments à cordes ou des vents ce qui fait parfois rire le public.Concerts

Le 16 novembre 2018, il se produit sur la scène de la Salle Pleyel avec Gimme5 (David Worm et Joey Blake du groupe Voicestra11) pour "Circle Songs" (réinterprétation de son album de 1997).
