MAGIC MUSCLE ....... Magic Muscle biography
With many musicians going through the years, MAGIC MUSCLE was sometimes more of a community than a band. Some like-minded people formed these clothes in Bristol / England around 1969/1970. The exceptional attendance of Simon House’s violin has always reflected a unique trademark. Core members from the beginning were also Rod Goodway (guitar, vocals), Adrian Shaw (bass) and Kenny Wheeler on drums.
Their music means a mixture of space travel and blues rock expeditions with some touch of an American western coach, so in a way similar to a Welsh man band.
In 1972, they earned the nickname ‘Bastard Sons Of Hawkwind’ during a tour with Dave Brocks & Co on their Space Ritual tour. Some of the songs from this episode were shown on 'Laughs & Thrills' - a collection of live recordings that was finally released in 1991. In 1973, they were seen gigging with Pink Fairies, and were also joined by guitarist John Perry for a while. When Goodway had to enter the hospital MAGIC MUSCLE was first placed on ice.
It was in 1987 when the band returned to the scene due to the growing interest in recording the activities of former members associated with Hawkwind.
Goodway has taken over a compilation of the album ‘The Pipe, The Roar, The Grid’ released in 1988 which contains archival recordings from 1970-1973. The band was then reformed and consisted of guitarist Huw Gower, Adrian Shaw, Simon House and drummer Twink. Their debut concert was held on August 1, and was released as ‘One Hundred Miles Below’ in 1989.
In 1991, MAGIC MUSCLE returned with a new line-up featuring Steve Broughton (Edgar Broughton Band) and guitarist Nick Saloman on drums.
This line-up recorded the top space rock album 'Gulp!', Which also marks the band's final release. By 1994, Rod Goodway returned to other pursuits, while the rest of the outfit actually became Bevis Frond's new line-up.LADISLAV ZIVANOVIC
