@@justsomerandompersononthei2595 Linux doesn't support anything that the OS architecture and maybe 32-bit, and that's good because modern stuff gets to be used too.
The idea is that if an app developer hasn't updated their app to be 64-bit compatible like every modern app, then that app is bad anyway and not worth using. No one needs to be using outdated software, like the entirety of Windows.
Now with the benefit of hindsight I can see why Apple decided to drop 32bit support in Catalina. They were preparing the user base for the transition to their own silicon in the ARM architecture, which means the return of translation layers like Universal and emulation by Rosetta. And considering that x86 and x64 are effectively two different architectures, supporting 32 bit would have meant doing double the work even at the silicon level. At that point there's little reward in maintaining support for it.
@@_GhostMiner The word you are looking for is "marketable enough". Yes, Microsoft is lazy enough to keep re-using old software with their newest updates, but I appreciate the retro-compatibility, since I usually scavenge ages-old software to do very specific tasks. @@nuk1964 MSDOS and Windows were more complex that y'all think. It's all due to the PC clone wars that IBM lost. I'd recommend reading into that. Without COMPAQ back then, PCs would be as closed up and as proprietary today just like Apple Macs.
@@rigoligorlc4795 As interesting (in a head-scratching way) as it was, I never figured out what triggered that error (Windows performs an "uncommanded exit") as it occurred rather infrequently and randomly. I did type "win" on a few occasions just to see if Windows would come up -- it seemed to start up OK. Nevertheless I would exit Windows and perform a hard reset (i.e. switch power off, wait a couple seconds, then power it back up), then run CHKDSK after reboot as a precautionary measure.
@@nuk1964 I'm pretty interested in that crash though. I once ran Win3.1 on freedos with 386 enhanced mode and just got all those weird crashes during launch. And the DOS was definitely corrupted at that time since starting windows again will freeze the machine...
Exit Windows option only made sense back when it ran on top of DOS. The weirdest sort of crash I'd seen in Windows 2.x and 3.x was when it would suddenly exit and drop you into DOS -- with no error message. The weird part was that this system abort was: * you were back at DOS prompt in text mode, not in a graphics mode like some of the more common crashes * clean -- the DOS environment didn't appear to be corrupt as far as I can tell. Perhaps most puzzling (and shocking) was CHKDSK wouldn't find anything wrong in this type of crash (in most other crashes, a reboot would most certainly be require, and CHKDSK would find a couple problems in the filesystem). * exit was really fast -- instantaneous. Normal exit from Windows took noticeably longer.
@@kyoudaiken Yep, the other modes can be found under the ☰ (aka "hamburger menu" -- the icon that looks like a stack of three horizontal lines). I think it was a good idea to have the seprated standard/scientific/programmer modes. For most folks "standard" mode fits the bill. Scientific mode would satisfy the more technical user. This really is a testament to the work the Wine project is doing to create a multiplatform open source Windows platform. Even on "real" Windows it is useful for compatibility
I think the ExitWindows dialog box is from WineVDM, not the Program Manager. When a 16-bit program wants to shut down the computer, WineVDM is "the supporter" and helps 16-bit program to make Windows shut down so it shows the "ExitWindows" dialog.
Actually, they don't come from WineVDM. They're in windows. I know because I used to run these apps on windows 7 32-bit as a kid, natively (well, using the built-in NTVDM), without WineVDM. Windows 10 You’d need a virus that is somehow mine boggling enough to get through the increased security measures and advancements made in Windows needed to fuck over the master boot record. Don’t think it would be that easy nowadays. Still possible though.

@@IrisGalaxis Windows 7 had NTVDM, though. That's not comparable. In Windows NT, up to 11 even, the classic exit Windows dialog opens.
0 likes@@kyoudaiken Actually, they don't come from OTVDM. They're in windows. I know because I used to run these apps on windows 7 32-bit as a kid, without OTVDM. My guess is, since "exiting windows" makes no sense in an NT system, the devs just put in those simple error messages just for their own use and never expected the end user to see them, since you weren't ever supposed to run programs that call for the "exit windows" function.
0 likes@@nuk1964 MSDOS and Windows were more complex that y'all think. It's all due to the PC clone wars that IBM lost. I'd recommend reading into that. Without COMPAQ back then, PCs would be as closed up and as proprietary today just like Apple Macs.

0 likes@@kyoudaiken Google is a virus
0 likes@@rigoligorlc4795 As interesting (in a head-scratching way) as it was, I never figured out what triggered that error (Windows performs an "uncommanded exit") as it occurred rather infrequently and randomly.
0 likes@@nuk1964 I'm pretty interested in that crash though. I once ran Win3.1 on freedos with 386 enhanced mode and just got all those weird crashes during launch. And the DOS was definitely corrupted at that time since starting windows again will freeze the machine...
0 likesExit Windows option only made sense back when it ran on top of DOS. The weirdest sort of crash I'd seen in Windows 2.x and 3.x was when it would suddenly exit and drop you into DOS -- with no error message. The weird part was that this system abort was:
5 likes* you were back at DOS prompt in text mode, not in a graphics mode like some of the more common crashes
* clean -- the DOS environment didn't appear to be corrupt as far as I can tell.

I think it was a good idea to have the seprated standard/scientific/programmer modes. For most folks "standard" mode fits the bill. Scientific mode would satisfy the more technical user.
