The reason CMD reports Windows 8, is because it doesn't have a manifest telling it that it supports Windows 8.1, 10 and 11. Windows will report the wrong version to these applications
@@sfisher923 i'm sure it's caused by the same thing. Manually adding a manifest actually fixed one application that was reporting it was running on "NT 6.2"
On a similar note certain Python Programs will report Windows 8 instead of Windows 10 (Noticed this while looking at a log file on a DDLC mod called Monika After Story which uses Ren'py a Python Based Engine mainly used for Visual Novels)
6:40 It's probably using the deprecated(starting with 8.1) API for fetching the Windows version which will return Windows 8 RTM if the app calling it wasn't marked as compatible with Windows 8.1 or above.
About the 6.2.9200 build string in CMD, first of all it's not a random build. It's the original release of Windows 8, but was heavily criticized and so Microsoft released Windows 8.1 (build 6.3.9600) that fixed some of the issues this original release had.
Second of all this string doesn't appear because of a missing DLL string, but because Windows reports its version as Windows 8 (build 6.2.9200) to older programs that don't include a proper version manifest, a feature introduced in Windows 8.1, in order to maintain backwards compatibility.

Xp & Vista I imagine would be a problem, 10 11 or 8 should be pretty much fully compatible. It's not so much the distance in versions as certain periods where the whole thing was overhauled. Vista is essentially where windows becomes 'modern', xp and me are even more different.

Windows 10/11 did not recieve this update, however it is possible to get the help viewer installed back without any issue. Technically, Windows XP to Windows 10 32-bit should work better. You are keeping a lot of 32 bit libraries but replacing a lot of the 64 bit ones with 32 bit from XP, because of the differences between System32 and SysWow64.
If I recall correctly, Cmd showed a different version because the old method of getting windows version numbers works until NT 6.2. The newer version, such as Windows 10 uses different APIs for the same.
I know the comment is old. But Ender did use the 64-bit version of XP as indicated by the “Program Files (x86)” folder. And by paying attention while navigating the XP folder you would see the SysWoW64 folder too, and he using the 64-bit version of TotalCommander on XP which should not be possible at all on a 32-bit OS

I think I found the reason behind the Windows 8 version string in CMD at 6:25. After a quick Google search, I stumbled upon a Microsoft TechNet forum post where someone was developing for Windows 10 Technical Preview way back in February 2015. They were using GetVersionEx to get the Windows version, but that function always returned "6.2.9200" instead of the then current Windows 10 build version because it was fully deprecated by then, as another user commented.
My guess is that the Windows XP command prompt uses that old Win32 function to get the version string. However, because the "host OS" is now Windows 11 (where that function is deprecated), it returns that Windows 8 version string.
6:42 The build number is due to the `GetVersion()` API call being deprecated. Instead, Microsoft recommends you use functions such as `IsWindows8Point1OrGreater()`. Kind of lame if you ask me.

0 likesI think I found the reason behind the Windows 8 version string in CMD at 6:25.
2 likesMy guess is that the Windows XP command prompt uses that old Win32 function to get the version string. However, because the "host OS" is now Windows 11 (where that function is deprecated), it returns that Windows 8 version string.
TrustedInstaller back to its use

1 likeif operating systems were people, you'd be violating the fucking Geneva Convention
0 likesWhat a downgrade. Honestly, perfectly good Windows XP install absolutely ruined with the latest version of macrohard wankfest
0 likes6:42 The build number is due to the `GetVersion()` API call being deprecated. Instead, Microsoft recommends you use functions such as `IsWindows8Point1OrGreater()`. Kind of lame if you ask me.
