Just a heads up, there's nothing special about Kali Linux besides having network penetration testing tools and cyber security tools preinstalled. Any Linux distro can achieve the same thing just by installing those tools.

ikr, there’s no reason to install Kali just to shred disks/files

@Mike Lunista you probably wont use like 90% of the tools that are preinstalled.

Hey Crypto, great videos love the content man. I was hoping to get some advice and would appreciate any insight. I’m currently 18 and I’m the military and specifically learning the networking side of Comm (switches, routers, fiber, etc.) I have a Security + certification and almost have an associates in Information Systems. I was just wondering what path you would recommend for someone in my shoes as far as what sort of bachelors degree, certs, and learning experiences to pursue. The whole field is very new to me and I’m trying to learn as much as possible. Thank you

Nah, to complicated. I'll just throw my USB into the sun.

You might full the drive with anything and format it repeatedly and then there might not be any traces of original data (if you want to go simple)

What about the overprovisioning space that ssds use? There could still be sensitive data there.

If I recall , shred is meant for spinning disks not solid state devicesZ for a solid device it’s best to use full disk encryption.

With macOS disk utilities, that’s all built in, you can wipe it up to 27 times

I assume it does matter due to some weird way that physical storage works, but why so many passes? How come doing it once with all zeros wouldn't go undetected by forensics? What about 7 times with all zeros?

steps explained: use a live of a Linux distro and delete the data like you'd do with every day usage.

Or you could just smash the usb that tends to make the data unrecoverable

One time I shredded all the files on my school's public drive so that all the filed would become unreadable but people would still try to open them. Damn it was so funny watching people get so confused why their picture or document wouldnt open.

Why go through 7 cycles when you will fill all the data with zeros?

Couldn’t you just move the files onto a usb stick and destroy the stick?

What if you basically rewrite the file content and then rewrite the file name before deleting it? Even if you restore the file, the rewritten info will basically be the last one you typed on it.

Actually... may not be the case as there are so cards with wear levelling algorithms that can remap sectors to prevent Excessive wear on a single nand node. So overwriting won't actaully overwrite the file, your best option with solid state is trim
