+Melody Bray idk if you mean the idea or the line but just in case you meant the line.. the way I take it, I think it means that all things take time. until the water runs clear- for some people it could represent a cleansing from an experience or emotion, for others the waiting between finding useless and useful resources. but as a whole, I think it means that eventually things will clear out, and your life will become transparent again. it doesn't wash away the memory of the dirty water, but it shows that by giving things time, they will heal again. :))

I finally told my mum about how I think I have a coming and going case of depersonalisation and I couldn't have done it without you. I'm still terrified of going to see a counsellor about it and haven't talked to anyone professional as my trust has been broken time and time again by people in that line of profession. But I have told someone and in my eyes that is more than I ever could have done two months ago. Thank You so much Dodie, job really have saved me. My brain is still not better and I find myself denying that I have a problem whilst being vaguely conscious of doing so. dGBE tuning, playing d and b (standard guitar tuning but this is on baritone ukulele but either will work). on the d string for the fretting: 0,2,4,2 until "this is for me" where you just mute it anywhere and strum. Then at "watch me overthink", bar the 5th fret and place your pinky on the E string 8th fret. At "and disappear" bar the 8th fret and put your pinky on the D string 10th fret. Then go back to the picking and do the mmmmmms Sorry if that made no sense but oh well if you can't figure it out that's pretty much it <3

this is the same mantra ed sheeran follows, as he's said this in multiple interviews. with songwriting, you will have clear water running through the tap after you have gotten all the shit songs out of you. there will be specks of shit in the water at times, but the more songs you write, the more good ones will come of it and the clearer the water becomes.

Dodie, I'd rather have few and far between content that you're so immensely proud of, rather than frequent content that you think is meh. I'm not saying to just not do anything for months then release one huge project that used all of your time and resources, just make things that you are proud of, and find yourself grinning when you upload. You do have to make crap things in order to learn and make good things, but you should be proud of all their crappiness. And later you can be like, "wow that was crap but I had fun making it."

Doing this for yourself as in creating songs as a kind of diary (as you said). You express your feelings by making a song: the rhytym, the pace, the voices, the silences, the instrument etc. all add up to the lyrics you write. That's something sooo special :)

Melanie Maunakea it's a different kind of ukulele in the vid, and I looked online and also some comments suggested to tune it DGBD tuning. DO NOT do that, I tried and now my ukulele won't tune correctly anymore, so I just wasted an expensive instrument, please don't make the same mistake if you have a standards soprano (GCEA) ukulele, just wanted to warn you, and have a great rest of your day :)

Here’s a little a story about how this song helped me: I went away to another country with my family(I don’t really like my family) and I was mentally unstable and had to leave my friends and any contact to them. I also had to leave my phone, so I couldn’t listen to music. However, sometimes my sister would let me use her IPod. One night, I was crying and felt really bad. I was listening to dodie’s Secret For The Mad, I clicked on this video and felt so much better. The beautiful tune, the lyrics(especially “turn on the tap until the water runs clear”), and how simple it was. I felt at home sitting in my hotel room, watching the cars travel past. I’m a writer, and all these lyrics helped me so much. After I finished crying, I drew about this song, and went to sleep. Thank you, Dodie.

i somehow got it into my head that alosia was the name of an artist that dodie was covering, so i spent like half an hour looking to the original version of this song and then i realized.
So the first time I listened to this my best friend just found out her grandfather got cancer, so she was sobbing on the ground and I was hugging her and stroking her hair and this song was just playing in the background on loop. Now this song has a deeper meaning for me. Very beautiful tune.
I love this idea.....sometimes you just have to create, and create a lot. Not everything you do will be good but it helps you grow as an artist, and somewhere within the mess, you might create something good.

music is the best therapy there is. (Well I mean apart from seeing doctors and therapists) I used to write songs, I'd sit there and write how I was feeling.....you do this wayyyyyyy better than be. now music is like therapy for me.

I've been trying to figure out the configuration for this song and it's in the DGBE tuning plucking the open G string than open D and B strings together, the repeating this but moving the D string from open to the second fret and then the fourth fret and repeat. I'm not sure if it's perfect but it's close at least
I love this song for many reasons (the lyrics are beautiful as is the whole song itself) but for me I find it easy to connect with the idea - which I know isn't the point of you writing the song, I've just personally found that 'time to use my words - this is what I do / turn on the tap - till the water runs clear' explains how I feel when I try to write anything.

Today I was going to simply hand in my geography letters for Iceland but everything got complicated and my mum was supposed to drop in the cheque but she hadn't yet. I was about to go in and explain but my brain suddenly went 'What if.....' and then I was overthinking and creating scenarios that didn't exist. One of my friends said "Just hand in the letter it's not that hard." This was the moment I just started crying but not a full on cry. My friends aren't very good with children and small animals just to make you aware, the three of us have also been friends since year 5. When I start crying they don't know what to do so Flora, one of my friends, just awkwardly pats me on the shoulder saying there there, kind of sarcasticly. Then Anna, my other friend, went in and explained everything and made an excuse as to why I didn't do it myself.

I find it super nice that you allowed yourself to write something a bit unconventional and not-as-structured right of the bat. Sets things up for being genuine and not as much pressure.
Ed sheeran once said that the best way to make good songs that you're proud of, is to just write a load of shot ones. He used that metaphor where you just turn on the tap till the water runs clear
I really liked the song ! but, I have some criticism for the next month : sometimes your songs can be a bit similar to each other, so what I recommend you to do is try and make songs in all sorts of music genres so you can spice it up and learn from it :)
every artist do this so they can take something from each thing and mix it in their own unique style !

I really like this song. I'm not sure why exactly. It's just pretty and sweet. It's doesn't sound extremely happy and bouncy but it doesn't sound fucking depressing. It's a perfect balance of both which I think (some) musicians forget is a thing.

I recently decided to write a song. I've written only one verse and that took me all day. How you write songs so often baffles me. Good luck with Alosia!!:)
love this song v much + excited for alosia (also alosia sounds like a name of a beautiful girl with flowers in her hair and she owns a pretty garden and she paints a lot of portraits of random straingers bc she thinks every person is beautiful in their own way and she wears these comfy jumpers and denim dungarees and she belives that every human is her friend and also i sound weird so let me wrap this up)
even if we get 1 or 2 songs its great that you have a way to express how you are feeling and that you feel motivated to make it! btw the song wasnt rubbish at all. it made me feel very calm so thank you :)

I'm pretty sure you've spoken about the "running a tap until the water runs clean" but I'm super happy for you're turning it productive, as someone who's low on motivation quite often, (as a fellow musician and just in everyday situations cause that highkey depression aaa anyways) watching you keep getting back up creatively (at your own pace especially which is the MAIN reason I think your song thing is cool) is very inspiring! ^.^

13 likes+Melody Bray idk if you mean the idea or the line but just in case you meant the line.. the way I take it, I think it means that all things take time. until the water runs clear- for some people it could represent a cleansing from an experience or emotion, for others the waiting between finding useless and useful resources. but as a whole, I think it means that eventually things will clear out, and your life will become transparent again. it doesn't wash away the memory of the dirty water, but it shows that by giving things time, they will heal again. :))

0 likesI finally told my mum about how I think I have a coming and going case of depersonalisation and I couldn't have done it without you. I'm still terrified of going to see a counsellor about it and haven't talked to anyone professional as my trust has been broken time and time again by people in that line of profession. But I have told someone and in my eyes that is more than I ever could have done two months ago. Thank You so much Dodie, job really have saved me. You have helped me more than I can express in words and for that I will be forever grateful. 17 likesthis is the same mantra ed sheeran follows, as he's said this in multiple interviews. with songwriting, you will have clear water running through the tap after you have gotten all the shit songs out of you. there will be specks of shit in the water at times, but the more songs you write, the more good ones will come of it and the clearer the water becomes.

Dodie, I'd rather have few and far between content that you're so immensely proud of, rather than frequent content that you think is meh. I'm not saying to just not do anything for months then release one huge project that used all of your time and resources, just make things that you are proud of, and find yourself grinning when you upload. Doing this for yourself as in creating songs as a kind of diary (as you said). You express your feelings by making a song: the rhytym, the pace, the voices, the silences, the instrument etc. all add up to the lyrics you write. That's something sooo special :)

Melanie Maunakea it's a different kind of ukulele in the vid, and I looked online and also some comments suggested to tune it DGBD tuning. DO NOT do that, I tried and now my ukulele won't tune correctly anymore, so I just wasted an expensive instrument, please don't make the same mistake if you have a standards soprano (GCEA) ukulele, just wanted to warn you, and have a great rest of your day :)

1 likeI went away to another country with my family(I don’t really like my family) and I was mentally unstable and had to leave my friends and any contact to them. I also had to leave my phone, so I couldn’t listen to music. However, sometimes my sister would let me use her IPod. One night, I was crying and felt really bad. I was listening to dodie’s Secret For The Mad, I clicked on this video and felt so much better. The beautiful tune, the lyrics(especially “turn on the tap until the water runs clear”), and how simple it was. I felt at home sitting in my hotel room, watching the cars travel past.
I’m a writer, and all these lyrics helped me so much.
After I finished crying, I drew about this song, and went to sleep.

One of my friends said "Just hand in the letter it's not that hard." This was the moment I just started crying but not a full on cry. My friends aren't very good with children and small animals just to make you aware, the three of us have also been friends since year 5. When I start crying they don't know what to do so Flora, one of my friends, just awkwardly pats me on the shoulder saying there there, kind of sarcasticly. Then Anna, my other friend, went in and explained everything and made an excuse as to why I didn't do it myself.
