Loving this image! Hoping you never caught a squonk & came back to your cabin with just a pool of bubbles & tears. My group listened the heck out of this as high school sophomores. Genesis first album post Peter Gabriel & they decided to go for the $$. They got there.
Absolutely.....One of the greatest of any Era. My Favorite Group along with The Beatles.

YUP!! Talk about standing the test of time...most of the songs from their classic albums (Echoes, Dark Side, Wish You Were Here, Animals, etc) were written all the way back in the late 60's- 70's, but have become some kind of crystal ball to our future. Just as relevant now, some even more so. I don't know any band that has done that better than Floyd.
Wow- I think the reply previous to mine must’v gotten your initial comment confused with Pink Floyd - Genesis & PF both the premier bands of the 70’s, IMAO, but - hmm... ok - love’em both - always will !
This album was so important in 76-77 Those of us in our late teens in those days, and Genesis heads were very happy...They kept "Remastering" the vinyl too...It's sad that so many of those born in the 80's were caught in that tech wave; Hi fidelity sound systems got shoved on the shelves with the Beta VHS and Atari. They don't know what it's like to have the intricate sounds on these albums wash over them...🥲
Great album - and I figure it would have taken two or three years for a band with the same stature today, who had just reached a peak moment in their career, made their first big break with U.S. audiences...and right then, suffered the (at first) massive setback of losing their charismatic frontman/singer, to reload and come back with a new lead singer and a powerful new album. These guys achieved it in just six months after finishing the Lamb tour! :)
Today, the music business and the climate within rock/pop music doesn't really allow for bands to come back that fast and release a powerhouse album every year. The marketing machine demands much more time than that, and recording has gotten so much more complex too. You can barely find young, gited bands in the top league who move as fast as Genesis, Bowie, Slade or Roxy Music did in the seventies - and who manage to create so many solid albums in the process.
What a masterpiece this album is! It's so good, I appreciated it at 18 years old, when I was a wild, high Sabbath fanatic. (Now I'm a 58 year old sober Sabbath fanatic!)
Back then we had hundreds of bands with great musicians. You could go to the record store every week and be amazed. Computers and Pro Tools have killed music.
@dlangegoogle no, the music industry has been murdering music for profit and putting out catchy algorithms, they decide what gets played, who gets played and when it gets played. there's more artists than ever, you just don't get to hear them in the mainstream and so they struggle to make any money from it, they have to work which takes up time they could have used making good music.
One of the greatest rock albums ever recorded. Thank god for ENGLISH SENSIBILITIES.........these guys rock and they are not alone.....STONES ZEPPELIN BEATLES FLOYD GENESIS WHO it just IS THE GIFT TO THE WORLD THAT NEVER STOPS GIVING...........☺

Hey Kids! At 22:20, listen to the foot pedals "thumping" the soundboard and studio floor as Tony Banks PLAYS that magnificent piano break. By todays standards, this is a FLAWED RECORDING because of these little natural sounds...why have we lost this acceptance of human process? Bring on the NOISE! Glorious Album...Glory days!
I agree. I love hearing so-called "flaws" in a recording. Feels more real. example. John Bonham's kick pedal squeak in Zeppelin III. Heard a recently remastered version and it was removed. it didn't sound right. 😎
My favorite Genesis studio album. Every song is amazing. Just wish it would get more radio play on my local rock station which has been more into heavy metal recently. Sorry, I prefer progressive rock classics like this..
Changed my life when it came out. Together with Wind and Wuthering my all time favorite albums across all styles. A deeply felt connection in my soul..
This is the first time I've listened to this album in at least five years. It feels like taking a long drink of water when you're parched.
You hear this because this is real music, studied, played! It's not XFactor clown stuff
From the moment I heard for the first time the album "Selling England By The Pound" (at my brother-in-law Donny's home) I became a big fan of Genesis. All their music is simply marvelous!... By the way, Phil Collins' vocals are brilliant in this album "A Trick Of The Tail" that we are listening to at this moment. Thank you, "Ladislav Zivanovic" , for having uploaded it here !...
I saw the Lamb tour and the first Gabriel solo tour and the Genesis tour for this album. I even have this one on both vinyl and CD. Yeah, I'm one of the old folks... still, this is the... seventh best Genesis album, and THE best Collins era Genesis album.
This was the first album after Peter Gabriel left the band. The talent of this group of guys is beyond belief. I LOVE BOTH!! The original band, and the evolution since. BOTH, with Peter and without, we are blessed with some of the best talent in progressive rock history! My personal favorite is the original band with Peter Gabriel, and THIS album right after ♥️
Both Phil Collins & Peter Gabriel were AWESOME vocalists in the early days of Genesis. I saw Genesis LIVE for their We Can't Dance tour but never got a chance to see them live with Gabriel singing. I wished I could've see them with him.
Think about the accomplished, confident, polished sound of the four remaining members of Genesis. Then, think about how young they were and ... What they had already achieved. Astounding. Listening to Genesis and Peter Gabriel and then Steve Hackett as a solo artist too. They provide many of the architectural pillars of pop and rock music that influenced the entire decade of the 80's. With some spilling into the 90's (Jesus He Knows Me). So, without Genesis all together then, the four, solo Gabriel, the three, solo Hackett: Without them, many of the major musical acts of the 80's would not have sounded the way they did. These chaps have such massively wide, deep influence. Agree or disagree? Just a philosophical exercise. Just for fun.
Around 1972 I heard this perfect group. She was a favorite back then. Only Pink Floyd was better for me. After 1980 there wasn't much left. Maybe Nirvana and Iron Maiden. I hated the following "plastic music". Groups like Yes, Amon Düll II, Rainbow, The doors, Jimi Hendrix and many other groups will never come again. When I listen to the old discs, I ask myself where has the time gone? Many will be like me. Saw Jimi Hendrix live. on Fehmarn. Good friends died Yes, many friends died. They were unable to stand the hard work. People are almost all becoming more selfish. Those good times will never come again. Sorry for my bad English. Stay healthy and many greetings from Germany.........
When music and composition was still considered a skill. Not the crap that began in the late eighties and got worse as time went on. What a masterpiece!!
How I loved this album... what a pleasure to listen to again after all this time....Comme j'ai adoré cette album ...que du plaisir à ré ecouter aprés tout ce temps....
Brilliant album. 'Ripples' is achingly beautiful and still reduces me to tears. I wish I had the talent to recreate the videos I see in my mind's eye for every track.
What a great album, proving that they didn't need Peter Gabriel to make great music. In fact, they actually got better. A Trick of the Tail is still not quite on the level of Wind and Wuthering, I think, (and then it all went to hell pretty quickly after that). Love both albums plus all of Trespass through The Lamb (though with The Lamb, it was more about the story than the music for a lot of the album).
This and WAW are their best albums post Gabriel. This one being my favorite. Brilliant and listened to often. ❤️. I think when Steve Hackett left, the whole vibe changed. The man is simply a genius.
This was one that I missed but have since been enthralled to discover it. Genesis slowly transformed into Phil Collins backing group after this with varying success, interesting to follow the progress but what a history and a back catalogue and what memories each album brings back. Awesome band. Thank you.
You can still listen to Steve's guitar, then when he leaves the group too, a band that i have loved madly since 72 ends, i was 15 years old. The magic of their concerts, the masterpiece The Lamb, now at 65 they are always in mine hearth.
A Trick Of The Tail is the best Genesis album with Phil Collins as lead singer. An absolutely brilliant performance by the entire band and Phil in particular.
Thought of the first one of my formerly very close friends who is no longer with us when i listened to this. Truly i am surprised so many of us are still around this many years later.
First time listening to a Genesis album in full. Kind of unusual hearing Phil Collins' voice not singing his later pop songs. I think I'm going to have to listen to this a few times to really "get it."
Joya. Bravisimo. Me acompaña desde hace años. Mi hermano mayor lo llevó a casa.

One of my first albums. When l was having an episode of madness some of the lyrics like " they've got no horns and they've got no tail " from the last but one track made me think the Devil wasn't bad , just misunderstood. But now , well.
Early post Gabriel Genesis had a lot in common with Yes... bit of prog rock, great lead vocalist, musicianship off the charts... 2 of the best bands of the 70's without an argument
I went to see them at Mapleleaf Gardens when they toured this album it was a stunning show and the follow up album wind and weathering another awesome LP
The show they played in London (the one down the 401...) was the first show they ever played with Collins as their frontman. Bill Bruford was great with Genesis, he should have stuck around longer- maybe they could have avoided being a pop group.
/// The extremes come together just as in the paroxysm: the paroxysmal joy and sadness end up touching each other at the top; we are joyful when we are at the same time touched to the point of the heart and we have tears in our eyes. Births do that to me too, I cry every time; tears of joy... quite frequent with Mozart among others.
I remember when I first saw Genesis. It was right after I got off at midnight. I think it was 1973 or summer of 74. I walked into our 1 bedroom apartment and she yelled from the bedroom come look at this guy. It was Peter Gabriel who I knew nothing about at the time. He's wearing that thing, I forget exactly my memories have developed a shade or altogether vanished. But it looks gross like I tumor. Later he wore that huge flower around his head. Freaking awesome with music so unique to match. I can't remember what channel or show they were on. No cable or many channels in 73, 74. Maybe it was the Midnight Special ?
Love the last part of the track. It has to be the most haunting melodic arrangements in their catalog and almost the majority of their discography is just top notch and the bee's knees.
Yep got older, stopped singing about pixies goblins and hobbits, sold out stadiums all over Europe & America and made hit after hit albums I saw them first time 1974 last time Manchester 2022 and loved every album and tour 👍
Did you listen to wind and wuthering? Compared to Trick of the Tail it is much closer to the sound of the Gabriel area. The really big change came when Hackett left.
Yes, I agree. Trick of the tail is a perfect album… But each subsequent album became less and less interesting, maybe a handful of good songs sprinkled in… but that Peter Gabriel era is really where it’s at! Although I do still find Lamb lies down on Broadway to be a difficult listen…
A Trick of the Tail foreshadowed the futurenext Genesis. I believe it to be an entirely under-rated album. The Gabriel snobs think this album is supposed to be disliked. What a pity.
@unAdvanced I have a mate who's the biggest Rush fan you can meet every album lost count of how many times he's seen them,But his favourite album is Genesis Then there were three.
Disagree with you here as Gabriel’s era fans understood what the real after Peter era was that is after Wind…. Also as we know trick and wind were worked when Gab was still there yet sang by Phil
I'm a Genesis fan from their first record, for me Trick is more a continuation of where they left off with England by the Pound and the records preceding it. I was thrilled when Trick came out and felt I got the Genesis I loved back. Trick is arguably their best record and for me is part two of Nursery Cryme, a record done at the beginning their prime.
@Merritt Flint They made Wind and Wuthering less than a year after A Trick of the Tail. That's the amazing part of this great band. Two brilliant works and then I agree with you...the decline. The money talked when they went more commercial.
They where just another band,When Peter left it was over,So many choices all excellent,My album stack was a mile high, Actually we used milk crates just right! You never noticed anything you didn't like just different From heavy rock to folk to bluegrass there where sooo many great acts,You could go on a Wednesday to see Yes and the next week and see Black Savitha or say The Alman bros,Now that you look back,we where lucky compared to today,Long live rock!!!
Leider!!!! Ich habe noch die Lamb... Tour gesehen und das war unbeschreiblich.
@IT? I am a fan of the early Genesis to be sure. But I agree completely on Duke and ABACAB. Truly brilliant as well. Just different than the earlier offerings.

This album still has a lot Gabriel influence and Collins tries to copy him. Could not be his way and so he created his own style. But was not my style so I was through with Genesis after this beautiful album.

Classic Genesis. It all went wrong after Then There Were Three - and they departed the prog ' rock scene for commercial offerings. For a great album do listen to Seconds Out that is so representative of their early work and like TOTT a true Genesis classic album.
@William Griffitts I was a bit late to the party and "Seconds Out" was my introduction, or should I say induction? So much brilliant stuff over the years, but Seconds Out has to remain my favourite still. Though thoroughly enjoying this for the first time for an age. If not longer...

0 likesBrilliant album. 'Ripples' is achingly beautiful and still reduces me to tears. I wish I had the talent to recreate the videos I see in my mind's eye for every track.
6 likesWhat a great album, proving that they didn't need Peter Gabriel to make great music.
10 likesThis and WAW are their best albums post Gabriel. This one being my favorite. Brilliant and listened to often. ❤️. I think when Steve Hackett left, the whole vibe changed. The man is simply a genius.

Genesis slowly transformed into Phil Collins backing group after this with varying success, interesting to follow the progress but what a history and a back catalogue and what memories each album brings back.

0 likesI remember when I first saw Genesis.

4 likesDid you listen to wind and wuthering? Compared to Trick of the Tail it is much closer to the sound of the Gabriel area. The really big change came when Hackett left.
13 likes@Oliver Zwahlen totally agree.
5 likesSteve H leaving was the Real turn.
1 likeWind was worth but this post Gabriel Trick is top! Then again many scores were worked with Gabriel anyway
0 likesSame here Roy. I gave 'Wind and Wuthering' a chance but I did not engage with it. After this album their trajectory changed and I lost interest.
1 likeTrick of the Tail sounds better with each listening.
7 likesA Trick of the Tail foreshadowed the futurenext Genesis. I believe it to be an entirely under-rated album. The Gabriel snobs think this album is supposed to be disliked. What a pity.
