The 400-copy edition only What became Grannie formed around guitarist Phil Newton in 1968/69 and initially the cover band played gigs across East London. Newton then started writing for the band and they began to master songs like Leaving, Romany Refrain and Saga Of The Sad Jester at rehearsals. Around that time, Newton saw an ad in Melody Maker for an all-inclusive job in David Richardson’s SRT business that offered 8 hours of study time, a master tape and 99 completed LPs for £ 100. A reservation was made and the line-up that went to the studio for a while in 1971 was Phil Newton (lead guitar / vocals), Dave 'H' Holland (bass / vocals), Fred Lilley (vocals), Johnny Clark (drums) and futures Mrs . Newton, Jan Chandler (flute / vocals). John ‘Stevie’ Stevenson also appeared playing keyboards on one of the Colored Armageddon songs. the band started playing in the club circle in places like The Greyhound, The Marquee and even...Roundhouse though their journey ended when all of their equipment - including one of the first mellotrons - was stolen feverishly sought after by fans of the genre since its belated discovery in the early 1990s (Record Collector magazine listed it as its' 100 Most Valuable Records of All Time . ') One of the most valuable gems of the British progressive rock scene of the early 1970s.'

It contains a total of six cuts with Colored Armageddon, the noisy Saga of the Sad Madman and Departure, which had some melodic guitar 🎸 rad, pick of the bunch. It’s guitar-driven soft rock, similar in style to Wishbone Ash’s debut, with the bonus of a semi-decent singer and the absence of keyboards.
