Enderman: Well yes, but actually no.

Hey @Enderman: The "Audit mode" is used by OEMs to prepare systems right before creating an image and bumping it out on all of their machines. You can install stuff like Drivers there. The "defaultuser0" is the user account used for actually being able to use the whole OOBE setup. Without it you cant run the OOBE setup as it MUST be run from a user context and as such a user account. As soon as you finish OOBE (the "User creation part") the account gets automatically deleted by Windows. But if you abort the setup without actually creating a user account Windows "stalls". As the "Administrator" account is actually no real account but the "defaultuser0" account (which at the same time got already deleted as quitting OOBE) Windows cant login again as the SID (Security ID) for the account is no longer valid and as such will always show a wrong password. Actually it should be called "No GUID for this account anymore" ;-)

Audit Mode: It's used to make a custom version of windows(for example: Installing programs, drivers and/or customization(wallpaper, custom icons...)) and then you create a custom windows image to save it to a CD, then you can install windows from there and you'll have the programs, drivers and customization.
That special tool is used to prepare the system and help creating the image

I remember when I was opening random files in my system. I clicked on some setupuser.exe stuff and there was this deafultuser0 which had a password.
I removed the user later.

How to make your windows unstable:
1. Install Windows 10
2. Reboot connected to internet

Next time try naming the user defaultuser0

Fun fact: If a defaultuser0 account is made while in Audit Mode, the OOBE will actually create a "defaultuser1" account. If you've made a defaultuser1 and a defaultuser0 account in Audit Mode the OOBE will make defaultuser2.
I actually manually created defaultuser0-100 in Audit Mode and found that the OOBE made defaultuser101...

CTRL+Shift+F3 (Audit Mode) is usually good for adminstrators who need to prep a system image for use in enterprise environments avoiding the need for installation over and over on computers with the same hardware setup. (sysprep helps with getting back into the OOBE)

Audit mode lets you modify a Windows install and have Windows take the modifications into account as new "defaults", so that it will show the OOBE on next reboot.
It's basically what OEM's use for configuring their computers. defaultuser0 is a dummy account created temporarily in order to allow Audit mode to operate, and is being watched upon by Sysprep (the popup you closed straight away), which is responsible for applying the changes to the default configuration.

Similar story: I was browsing through system32 on Windows Vista (I know that was a poor move.) and I found msoobe. I almost screwed up the computer by clicking on it. I pinned it to my start menu and added a shortcut for it to my desktop just to look extra weird. I still have the file and it didn’t damage the system by moving it.

FYI Audit Mode is so OEMs and IT admins can install software prior to windows setup. That’s why the sysprep dialogue launches on login as the system needs to be sysprepped after.

The 'defaultuser0' use is an account used by sysprep (the preparation tool used by sysadmins to prepare a system that you trigger when you actually get into the fake Admin account), it's the account renamed by sysprep from which you launch the sysprep. It is deleted when you install the system. So why it is showing now, i don't know, but it's clearly not intended ^^'

This is not a bug, you have stumbled across Sysprep. When your in the oobe you can press ctrl shift f3 to enter audit mode, this allows you to install applications like Microsoft Office, or custom line of business applications, then using sysprep you can prepare the system to be captured using a Windows Deployment Server. I use this this is make images for deployment using WDS quite often. As for the defaultuser0 it’s a Service Account, I see and use it everytime I add a new computer to an Essentials 2016 domain. When you run the server client connector to join the essentials domain, this account is allowed to login interactively so the admin performing the setup can provide additional information during provisioning (I.e which user is assigned this computer, who should be able to RDP, etc) aside from its purpose there, defaultuser0 has been documented appearing since 2016 with the anniversary update of Windows 10, generally the accepted notion is the Account is created as part of the migration process whenever a major release occurs. As for the security ramifications I’m not sure how you would leverage an account that is generally not permitted an interactive login session under normal circumstances, but I suppose your welcome to attempt it.

Edit: it’s always worth noting that sysprep can only be called either while in the oobe, or after a user has logged in by running “sysprep” try it out for yourself, go to a run box and type sysprep, it will open a folder where you will find the executable to enter into audit mode, will save you the trouble of having to reinstall everytime if you want you experiment.

Audit mode is used by system administrators to create custom windows images for businesses to deploy using their imaging software. This is also how OEM’s create their custom windows images for their computers that they sell. Also the administrator account it loads into is not fake. It loads into admin so it has all perms to install software and configure the system. As for the defaultuser0 i don’t know about that. Then again your not supposed to logout or switch users in audit mode.

Control Shift F3 is for OEM's to install their Hardware Drivers and Software before a User Account is Created they setup a Computer a the Desk Install the drivers Using that hotkey function then they reseal the Computer to go to the End User

I found out a way to get this user in another way! I found it by accident. So in windows you go to Settings > Users > Add Kiosk User > Programs > Microsoft Edge > Reboot > Boot into Boot manager > Command Prompt > Remove The Kiosk User > Reboot. That’s how I did it!

LOL so some time ago there was a computer right? But you could only log in as Administrator and the domain. Then there was defaultuser0. I opened my kali linux USB and fired up chntpw in c:\Windows\system32\SAM.dll and used chntpw to blank out the Admin password(local). But i figured out that it was too risky and i found defaultuser0. I instantly made it a Admin user and blanked out the password. Defaultuser0 is a nice user!

I wonder what happens if you combine it with the sethc exploit. Would it just log into System like usual or would it cause additional breakage? And if you try to create additional accounts or enable the admin account, does it work? Seems like this exploit to enter audit mode before first boot up could have potential.

I got default user 0 without setup!

Here is how to do it:
1. Open virtual machine (I did it on my host, but my PC is fine)
2. Install windows without default user 0
3. Once finished installing go to: C:\Windows\System32\oobe\msoobe.exe (I think) and run as administrator.
4. After oobe your in the desktop! Just log out.
5. YOUR FINISHED! You will see default user 0 in your user accounts!

This happened with me, trying to install Windows 8 in VirtualBox. I start the installation and exit of my home and the Windows 8 installed sucessfully, but when i come back, the computer has sleeped. When i returned, the VM not responding, so i forced the restart, and i enter on the VM again. But the account named "defaultuser0" has been created and i dont have idea whats the Password. So i have to start another installation.

For me, Installation was always stuck at just a moment then when i restarted it became defaultuser0.... Couldn't get past it with so many methods but then i just randomly used shift+ctrl+f3 while restarting from ur video and it worked... Dunno how tho

you will use account defaultuser0 in install windows and if you use commandpromt to delete defaultuser0 you will destroy windows but in window 11 you can create onee user to install your windows by using your account you use

I had this problem with Lenovo x201 laptop that had been reset prior to buying on ebay.
I found hidden partition did system reinstall. Had weired explorer issue.
Default user.
Tries to set user, it refused.
Reinstalled again. In administrator setup 2 accounts admin amd user1
Logged out of administrator.
Reboot.
Logon admin.logout switch to user1 finsined setup.
Reboot.
Logged in to admin elvated user1 to administrator
Logged out reboot. Logged in to user removed all other accounts.
Renamed user1 to my name registered laptop.
Still works ok

Wimdows 7 pro had same issue

I went to C:/Windows/system32/oobe, opened msoobe.exe and “just a moment" showed up, obviously the windows setup exe, so I signed out to get out of it, it brought up that introduction thing when you make a new user account, I signed out to get rid of that, and then 2 accounts showed up, my account, and defaultuser0, so considering that I’m signed in with a Microsoft account and my account is fully setup, I do believe that if I had waited until after “it’s taking a bit longer than we expected blah blah blah” I probably could’ve accessed defaultuser0 but now I can’t get back in without repeating the process because I can’t crack the password for this account, but from this mistake, I wanna do some research on this
