'I Don't Need No Doctor' je vrckavi i hrabri R n'B-flecked rocker s pobjedničkim grupnim harmonijama i živopisnim up-tempo rafalima, a 'It's a Hard Road (Back Home)' je uzbudljivi slow-burn blues come-down s obilnim klavirom, električnom gitarom i orguljaškim solažama.

LADISLAV&Z... ....

Luckily proving that despite the band's rather stupid name that includes the word 'Whale' still provides great prog-related music (also watching you, Satin Whale!), the late 1960s whalefeathers band from Cincinnati, Ohio released two albums in its rather short time together, the debut of 'Declare' in 1970 and this self-titled sequel a year later. With a sound a bit like Cream, Vanilla Fudge and Nosferatu and favoring blues solos, confident soulful vocals and plenty of Hammond organ solos, if anything the band sounded more embryonic and sixties flavoured than anything else, with 'proggy' elements coming from impromptu distraction passages they liked to stretch out with, unlike what many other "proto-prog" groups were delivering at the time. Opener 'World of Pain' is a powerful rocker with fierce electric guitar races and drops of Hammond's organ before culminating in two bluesy finals. 'I Don't Need No Doctor' is a squeaky and brave R n'B-flecked rocker with winning group harmonies and vivid up-tempo bursts, and 'It's a Hard Road (Back Home)' is a thrilling slow-burn blues come-down with a bountiful piano, electric guitar and organ solos. The 'Bastich' opening the other side shows the most exciting potential the band has shown, the first minute reaching the build-up to dreamy group harmonies before a heavy slow swing of the second half. 'Pretty Woman' is all grooving bluesy rocking swagger, and ten minutes closer 'Shadows' provides the closest album comes prog thrills providing a long extended distraction soloing from all musicians. With endless runaway Hammond organ, smouting guitar tracks, spinning thick bass constantly punching and beating drum attacks, it represents a band that is their craziest and most unsupported and highlight moment of the whole LP - a very tasty thing! The Whalefeathers fell apart two years after this album in 1973, but during their time they were able to perform concerts with higher-profile shows such as The Allman Brothers, Edgar Winter, Grand Funk Railroad, Badfinger and others. They left behind two highly regarded albums that are still enjoyed today, with a constant demand for reissue over the years giving the band and their works a small but secure status of an obscure rock band. Fans of hard-driving Hammond rockers with killer guitar playing, light psychedelic flavors, a great deal of blues and early proto-prog sounds are likely to find a lot to be interested in here, and it's an energetic, cool and catchy album by a talented lost group worth exploring.
