Depuis l’ouverture de The Jeweller, Rapp a atteint une sorte de pureté dans l’écriture de chansons, ainsi que dans la performance, et la chanson d’ouverture est un peu comme Jacques Brel dans les paroles, tandis que le refrain a un crochet attrayant qui se demande si ce n’est pas un succès mondial. Ce qui suit est une chanson presque instrumentale du film du même nom, où à part quelques chants, l’instrumentation presque classique donne un air festif Ensuite, il y a Rocket Man, une chanson pleine de violoncelle qui hante l’auditeur bien après la durée de la chanson, c’est une chanson prise par l’histoire de Ray Bradbury du retour d’un astronaute raté sur Terre. God Save The Child est la chanson la plus exigeante de l’album, elle aurait facilement pu être écrite par Grace Slick avec l’aide de Kantner, recevant une instrumentation rock absolument merveilleuse, y compris le clavecin. After a pretty weak These Things Too album, Tom Rapp returns with a superb Use Of Ashes, but at the time of recording, he's the only PBS left, Wayne Harley, taking Tom on board alone. Rapp dedicated this album to the low countries (Benelux) where he stayed when he wrote these songs, which is proof of his taste in the artwork of the Flemish album (here is a tapestry of unicorn hunting). So, with mostly studio musicians supporting him, Tom rose to the occasion and performed one of the most praised performances in the prog folk domain, reaching raconteur troubadour status, often splashing around with medieval-type songs. Since the opening of The Jeweller, Rapp has reached a kind of purity in songwriting, as well as in performance, and the opening song is a bit like Jacques Brel in the lyrics, while the chorus has an appealing hook that wonders this is not a worldwide hit. What follows is an almost instrumental song from the film of the same name, where apart from a few chants, the almost classic instrumentation gives a festive air Next up is Rocket Man, a cello-packed song that haunts the listener far after the song's duration, it's a song taken by Ray Bradbury's story of a failed astronaut's return to Earth. God Save The Child is the most demanding song on the album, it could easily have been written by Grace Slick with Kantner's help, receiving absolutely wonderful rock instrumentation, including harpsichord. A poem about Rois that cools the spine is another masterpiece, because both the cello and the flute shower the chills from your spine to your heart.. From harpsichord-laden jazzy Tell Me Why and Sargery, you'd never guess that this album was recorded (in three days) in Nashville, but again not sweetening will cloud you again as you arrive at The Old Man. which will not only cool you down more and give you goose bumps all over and leave you emptied of tears of joy. Arrest, touching, provocative thinking, gut emotion wrenching, a cello/flute combination that Tom Rapp uses so well wreaks havoc in his brain. There is no doubt that you will not be the same after hearing this song, if only for a few minutes. Riegal has Tom and his wife singing again in duo to cello drones, while closing "When the War Began" can only further cower a man's solitude against the horrors of humanity, and the whole thing is in stark contrast to Rapp's phenomenal and emotional songwriting. Some albums just never got their share of breaks and even some almost 40 years after the public needs to discover them and praise XXX for deserving, and The Use Of Ashes is one of those albums.
