I had a rough time installing windows 7 on my laptop. Cause was the broken efi support on windows 7. after a lot of tinkering it eventually worked out and is wonderful now.
I expected a SD to SATA adapter instead, better as HDD replacement except class 10 SD cards cannot reach even the lowest range of SATA transfer limit (best ones can reach 100MB/S reading, close to IDE drives ATA/100 support and definitively, better than USB 2.0/3.0 limits).
On your laptop this SD card will bring bottlenecks, but worth it for older laptops where SD limits are closer to original HDD speed limits.

I think it works because new Windows with the right drivers deployed doesn't give a shit about the medium it boots from. And for the BIOS/UEFI, the card reader only comes through as a "Standard USB Mass Storage Device". It thinks that the SD-card reader with the card inserted is a USB drive, and just works. That's basically it. (I still use this method, but for Windows 10, as most of the time I use my SSD Gentoo install)

SD card sequential speed is good, but random read/write speed is horrible. 4K performance can be worse than HDD sometimes. Overheat and poor controller can also help to drag the speed down. It’s brutal. Nevertheless, an interesting experiment.

That's not exactly easy. You see, these drivers cant get on an SD without problems. You're not a megamind. You can't just snap your fingers and do what Enderman does. Computers are not easy, as I know from personal experiences.
I actually have a laptop that boots from a (full size) SD card slot! I know this because it refused to boot from the USBs from some reason, and in frustration, I tried to boot from the SD card and it worked lol

Well, you could get an SD > sata adapter, it would be far easier. There are some on ebay but i'm not sure how well those things work. I know that there are also SD > IDE adapters and these work just fine. Anyways, installing windows on a SD card is a bad ideia tho. There's no Wear leveling, TRIM, cache and the controller is very basic so IOPS are terrible. I mean it works, if you want your sd card to last one week :D

I think it works because new Windows with the right drivers deployed doesn't give a shit about the medium it boots from. And for the BIOS/UEFI, the card reader only comes through as a "Standard USB Mass Storage Device". It thinks that the SD-card reader with the card inserted is a USB drive, and just works. That's basically it. (I still use this method, but for Windows 10, as most of the time I use my SSD Gentoo install)

That's not exactly easy. You see, these drivers cant get on an SD without problems. You're not a megamind. You can't just snap your fingers and do what Enderman does. Computers are not easy, as I know from personal experiences.

0 likesWell, you could get an SD > sata adapter, it would be far easier. There are some on ebay but i'm not sure how well those things work. I know that there are also SD > IDE adapters and these work just fine.
0 likesAnyways, installing windows on a SD card is a bad ideia tho. There's no Wear leveling, TRIM, cache and the controller is very basic so IOPS are terrible.
I mean it works, if you want your sd card to last one week :D
