How to reset the password in Windows 10 without USB media

To people who think sethc command prompt is easier and faster:
Sethc bug way requires a bootable media to be faster. In fact, it can be done through recovery the same way, just by replacing sethc.exe with cmd.exe in System32 folder. But this includes damaging the system integrity, which cannot be considered lossless. This BCPE way is not only safer, but is just much easier to perform due to its script. And yes, you can keep the old user and get the info from it, but that is all up to you. Just omit the net user /delete part. Personally I would go with creating a new user anyway, since I store my data away from the desktop and folders like that. If you feel like, you can use either way, but in my opinion it is not the tidiest of the solutions.

Also do keep in mind this will not work with a device with BitLocker enabled. Then, you would have to boot into a bootable media based on Windows 10 PE like Hirens Boot CD PE to unlock the drive if you have your recovery key. I believe the default Windows RE does not have support for unlocking BitLocker drives but I could be wrong. Most Windows PE environments have BitLocker capability.

You can actually press shift whilst pressing restart in the sign in page and it'll show advanced options that way. I used it once when I tried to edit my BIOS to turn virtualization on but then all my Virtual machines were messed up so I changed my settings back to how it was.

The problem is that it requires deleting previous user. Each user have it's own folder in C:\Users. What if there's important data on the previous user?

Fun fact: instead of using cmdline you could’ve done the utilman glitch to get cmd on the login screen and run the batch file from there, although it is less convinient than the batch running at startup

is copying "cmd.exe" to "osk.exe" not much easyer in the recovery mode, just open the on screen keyboard on the login screen and you get the command prompt, in there you just do "net user <username> *" including the star, enter new password twice and the password is updated without a restart required

You could have just changed the user account password using 'net user Enderman 3232' so you still have your files

Nice also best protection against this is encryption of the registry if you just want to shield config or encryption of the drive and a ATA lock on it to prevent the data being obtained too quickly.

In reality, you could reset the password to the locked account using this method; replacing all four of those net lines with one:
net user User password1234


(of course, replacing User and password1234 accordingly)

1.only work when you have recovery partition (if you dont have the recovery partition you cant have the cmd and you have to create a recovery partition)

2.this will del your default account and create a new account, all files in the old users will be deleted (im not sure)

The problem is some versions of Windows 10 ask for user and password if you try to open the command prompt this way. Same goes for every other option that gives access to your files. I think having a windows installer disk and doing it from there is fine.

You can just change utilman to utilman1 and cmd to utilman, so once you are in the login page you can open cmd by clicking on that weird circle with an arrow in it and type: net user (your LOGIN username (If you don’t know this one, type net user only)) *, and click enter twice. Now restarts your pc and your password should be removed and you should be able to login without a password

But does it remove the user files?

Personally, if I had an issue with my user account, I wouldn't bother going through all of this. I can just activate the hidden default administrator account a.k.a "the super admin account" using no more than one line in the command prompt and from there create a new admin user account like I would normally. No need for this many steps.

Couldn't you just set a new password without creating a new account using "net user <username> <password>"? It probably would clear saved passwords, but creating a new user and deleting the previous would do this too... And at least you don't have to copy all those files from the original account...

Alright for all the people who git stuck in a boot loop heres what i did i manage to put it on the diagnosing pc by doing the reboot thingy and then i manage do undo it by making the numbers you put in the SYS back to 0 and removing the text you put in the CmdLine, thats the method i did and it works you dont need to delete the "lifesaver.bat" Remember to press ok and exit for the changes to be saved sadly you still cant change the password anymore but its better thatn just having to stare at a boot loop hope it helps

!WARNING! This might DESTROY Windows Boot files, to Enter in Recovery Menu press F11. This was patched.

The way you reset the password is only possible when you know the password because when you will opt for automatic repair it will ask for an administrator password and even if you go to advanced options by shift+restart you will not able to launch cmd without an administrator password.

Too bad it won't work because most modern PCs are automatically encrypted with BitLocker when logging in into a Microsoft account (even with Home edition). It will just ask the BitLocker recovery code instead of booting

You all said this is a lifesaver, but actually it will just reset your entire computer. And if you have any work folders inside, you would lose them and your apps, games, downloads and others. Then you have to install them all again.

You can change password using net use UserName Password , where UserName is username and Password is new password.
The thing in the video is just "reinstalling" your account, it will maybe lose any data in C:\Users\Username (Username is username), and settings are cleared.

Oh umm... On some computers it already needs the password to even do anything in the recovery screen... the prompt shows up after you select the cmd/whatever else might reset your password in a way. I think booting into another OS and sethc-ing the way from there is the only way to do it now

Why don't you just type shutdown /r at the last line of lifesaver.bat to make it restart itself instead of restarting manually?

The process seems a little complicated and it also involves deleting the user. What if there's important data that are either on the Desktop or inside Documents for example? Do you have to back this all up somewhere? Also, aren't there any better and less complicated methods that can achieve much better results if not the same result as shown in the video?

In newer versions of Windows it prompts you to type the password. In a friend pc what I've done was copy CMD.exe from my computer to his replacing sethc(can't copy cmd from the exact same computer through Linux because this .exe is locked on disk by windows but if it proceeds from another computer it works at least for me). but your method would work with an windows boot USB I think

Ah man, wish I found this earlier. I had to use a Lazysoft bootable windows with preinstalled software that was supposed to let me reset the password. Problem is, it didn't, instead kt detected only the built-in Administrator account, which I logged onto and from there reset the password on the original account, before disabling the Administrator from the recovered main

I will use sethc method using that command prompt (replacing the sethc using cmd.exe), it won't even delete the existsing user

This is not the only way you can replace ease of access with cmd and use netuser {username} * to change the password this way you will preserve the data on the account of said user

It dont works on latest version of windows. So i guess %75 of windows 10 users use latest version of windows. You need to enter your password in recovery menu.
