To clarify the ending, the father expressed concern because he knew the Fire Nation would salvage the war balloon and reverse engineer it for later use.
The ending showed that the fire nation got hold of this new invention, and they plan to use it in the future. From now on things start to heat up (pun intended) through the rest of the season and even step up next season. Looking forward to your next few reactions!
It’s called reverse engineering, the Romans did it to the Carthaginians when they salvaged one of their warships to build a fleet in under three months.
Yes, the engineer knew that the fire nation had the know how to salvage the balloon, and reimagine, what it could do, and its potential for war. He knew that he just given the fire nation a new and potentially terrible weapon.
Regarding question in the end, it's both regret for what he done earlier instead of fighting back with (and that's more present) the fact, that this war balloon is lost and Fire nation have means to reverse engineering on that, which means both "they've got what they wanted anyway" and "Soon enough we're gonna lose sky advantage". Pretty complicated for "just a kid's show", eh?
