How Does the Rainboom Work?

Another thing: Rainbow should be the only pony naturally to do a sonic rainboom. The reason for that is her colour palette. Imagine if another pegasus, such as Spitfire did it. Would the flame shape and the rainbow still be rainbow coloured or would it change to Spitfire's colour palette? Well, if it would adapt to Spitfire's colours, it wouldn't be a rainbow, and if it would stay rainbow colours, it wouldn't look as good. When Rainbow is flying seconds after the sonic rainboom has occurred, we can see that the rainbow is pretty much being drawn from her rainbow-coloured tail. So if a rainbow would be coming out of Spitfire's orangish-yellow tail, that wouldn't quite work. So Rainbow Dash was destined for this at birth, which might have something to do with genetics.
The reason the wonderbolts were incapable of doing this in the Sonic Rainboom episode when attempting to save Rarity is because they're just not as good as Rainbow. Flying isn't all speed, it's also agility and *motivation*. Keep in mind whenever Rainbow did a sonic rainboom, she was being motivated by something. Now, remember how Twilight saved Spike in the same way? Or when some of the school students saved Oona the Yak in the same way? The reason they didn't cause a rainboom links to my first point, which is that only Rainbow is capable of doing so, even if others are flying just as fast as her and being just as motivated as her.

I think it might have something to do with drags relationship with speed regimes.
Between sub sonic and super sonic, there exist a regime know has trans sonic, we're drag increases alot. This drag drops after a certain point. This is where my theory comes in
When rainbow dash finally enters trans sonic speeds, her pegasus magic starts to build up, trying to meet the demands of keeping at speed with the induced drag. Once the drag drops to a certain point, the high demand of magic is gone, but there's still alot of magic built up.
This is where my second part comes in. Has aircraft go faster, the air heats up the surrounding outer sheets of material on the ever accelerating plane. Because pegasi are just flying flesh, I suspect that there magic also forms a heat shield around the then selves
Now back to the magic build up. Since the magic has to be expelled somewhere, and it's expelled through the shield. The shield then expells the magic again, along side the sonic rainbow, and thus, you get THE SONIC RAINBOOM

When she travels at the speed of sound (mach cone 1), she collects a mass amount of water on her, and when she travels faster than speed of sound, she hits mach 1 plus, the sound waves merge into a single shock wave that travels at the speed of sound. That's when she goes faster and faster. The max speed she's ever hit is mach 10, which is 12348 km/h, 3430 mph and 7600 mps(it was calculated). The sound waves force the water outward making the rainbow, so the feathers quickly disperse the water around her. (The sunlight does this when it hits the water)

So yeah, it doesn't have anything to do with her mane

Side theory: depending on how much magic they lose or what aspect they lose, that's how much they fade

I actually would agree with the whole magic correlates to the color. My own pegasus OC Nightspeed (who I've headcanoned as dash's older brother) is another pegasus able to perform the boom, but it's dark blue and black to match his coat and mane, I've labeled it a sonic darkboom. It's the exact same thing, just a different color, and the whole pony magic theory would fit perfectly with it.

Its worth mentioning that the speed required to perform a sonic rainboom must be much higher than that of breaking the sound barrier. Note that a mach cone is formed before the rainboom itself and the sweptback angle of the cone indicates that she is flying well beyond Mach 1; perhaps even in the hypersonic range (~Mach 3+).

You forget to mention how the Sonic Rainboom was an old tale because of when celestia defeated and banished Luna(nightmare moon) she created the rainboom that people thought was a myth

I agree with the pony color part. Remember when twilight has all of the alicorn princess magic? She also had a trail, but in her own colors. I think this would be the same for a rainboom if she did one. But out of curiosity, what would twilight’s boom be called?

That magic aspect of the Sonic Boom parts makes sense since it's their natural magic that allows them for Accelerated flight ,speed ,and weather manipulation.

I noticed another thing with the colors matching the character. I've seen with most unicorns (Rarity, Starlight, Sunset, etc.) that the magic glow of their horn is a color of the pony (rarity's is either her cutie mark or eye shadow, sunsets is eyes, starlight's is the greenish blue in her mane, etc.)

Magic boom on the other hand… I got no idea what that’s supposed to mean. - from a non-magician.

As she reaches the sound barrier speed, she goes 343 km per second. Before she reaches the speed, the barrier starts to bend and break, causing that wind-fire-thingy as she goes faster. Once it breaks it explodes.

I've been thinking, could a pegasi like Twilight or Fluttershy perform it? If they could, what would it be called? What colour? I have no clue what color it could be because neither of them leave a trail of color behind them when they fly, unlike rainbows. Maybe Twilight's would be the same as in the example.

Again, RLYoshi did a video on this. It explains that rd is travelling fast enough to pick up water, but she can't be travelling at the speed of sound because she'd hit the ground. She then stops a bit, and that means the water flings out in a band. Check out the video, I can't explain it.

I like this idea. Pegasi magic has always been a great topic of debate, and I've always theorized that it's what allows Rainbow Dash to actually BE the fastest flier in Equestria. If she has a passion for anything, it's flying—more specifically racing—and as we've seen with unicorns and earth ponies, a pony's magic tends to align itself with that pony's passions and desires. It would make sense that Rainbow Dash's pegasi magic is concentrated toward the area she has the most passion for: Speed. It would also explain why she leaves a rainbow contrail behind her when she exercises her extreme speed. With that all in mind, it's no surprise that a Magical rainbow would occur upon generating a sonic boom

Twighlight actually did two Sonic rainbooms at a summer Sault celebration and when casting her spell like you mentioned but I believe that the summer Sault celebration rainboom was a special one because it was in the shape of her cutie mark

Awesome video man. I've been waiting all week for this! I always wondered how the sonic rainboom worked. But I think Twilight did her own "sonic rainboom" in a MLP episode once. (Not in the one you mentioned. Don't remember the name, but it's in one of the older seasons) It's cool that you changed your OC a little! I know this video is older than when I’m commenting but I’m new to your channel and I have another theory that may hold some explanation. I like the magical boom theory but what if Dash’s boom was so powerful that the shockwave bunched up water droplets and a combination of compacted water, light rays, and how fast they were moving allowed the droplets to catch on fire in the same way a diamond is formed mixed with the light rays from the sun and Dash’s residual magic created the sonic rain boom.

I know that in the episode where Starlight meets Trixie, dash and Starlight are talking about the wonderbolts, and rainbow dash flew off really fast, that caused a really loud boom. Maybe that was the sonic boom portion of the rainboom. If she went any faster her rainbow trail woulda made the rainboom, rainbow.

How would the rainboom be known as the RAINboom before rainbow did it, though? It'd have to be done before by a rainbow pony or something! Any ideas?

Now the really interresting question would be, if you theory is correct and magic is a waves like the sound, since the boom & rainbow happening together does it mean that the speed of magic and sound are the same ?

That makes so much since! I love it! But do you think that her kids or if she taught other ponies how to do it then they could do it?

Just a side rant/theory about the magical element of the Rainboom... Perhaps the Rainboom has a unique element of magic to it - an element of desire, fate or hope.


As a filly, Rainbow Dash didn't expect to perform the rainboom but achieved it through her desire to win, her desire to be the fastest she could ever be and to show everyone she is. Along with the desire to win the best young flyers competition, Rainbow Dash hoped she could save Rarity in time. Again the rainboom allows RD to catch up with Rarity and the Wonderbolts in time (literally almost at the ground!), magically fulfilling RD's desire to save them.


Applejack had the desire to go home and find her purpose and the rainboom directed her home and to her cutie mark, her fate being working the apple farm.


Rarity had the desire to make her designs shine and stand out. The rainboom opened the rock of gems giving her inspiration for glamorous costumes, sealing her fate as a fashionista. (Not sure if the rainboom would be connected to how her horn knew where to go to find the rock - anyone else have any ideas?)


Fluttershy had the desire to fit in to a crowd where she didn't feel so weak, small, blocked out and to be listened to. The rainboom helped her realise she could communicate with animals (or help unlock the ability). This sealed her fate of working and caring for animals.


Pinkie Pie desired to have a life full of joy, colour and happiness. Perhaps she felt her fate was to work at her family rock farm for the rest of her life (since her relatives were into rocks) and that there wasn't much of a world outside the rock farm (she seemed pretty young compared to her sisters and the Mane 6 so maybe she didn't leave home much before seeing the rainboom?). Anyway, the rainboom brought her happiness and showed her that life wasn't as bleak as she thought it could be (or as bleak as a rock farm?). Pinkie then wanted to spread joy and smiles because she wants everyone to feel as joyful as she did seeing such an event (and for others to not feel sad, low and hopeless like she may have felt). She realised through comedy, friendship, cupcakes and parties, that she could bring smiles to her fellow ponies.


Twilight had the desire to prove that she was worthy and ready to attend the school of magic, inspired to be like her idols, Starswirl and Princess Celestia. The rainboom fulfilled Twilight's desire by boosting her magic to an abnormal level for a unicorn, especially at her age. This sealed her fate as the Element of Magic and Princess of Friendship because of her capability of using various magical abilities which, along with her knowledge of friendship, allowed her to finish Starswirl's scroll.


Since the Mane 6 all shared a mindset of desire and belonging at the same moment, that may have been what connected them during the rainboom.


The rainboom at Cadence and Shining armors wedding could symbolise their desire and fate of being together and ruling the Crystal Empire (even though they didn't know it yet because it hadn't appeared).


Finally, when Twilight offers her friendship and guidance to Starlight Glimmer whilst a filly version of Rainbow Dash performs a rainboom, this could symbolise Starlights reform, acceptance of friendship and fate of her becoming a major part in the study of friendship (the thing she had despised since she was left behind by Sunburst).


Just an idea! Probably overthinking it way too much though. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed!

Any movement in our atmosphere creatures pressure waves aka sound waves. These waves cause vibrations that our brains translate into sound
The faster you move the more compact the waves in front of you become
Once you hit mach 1 (the speed of sound), you're traveling at the same speed as the waves in front of you, and that creates a mach cone around you. The smaller the cone's angle is, the faster you go.
At this point, the pressure waves are so tightly packed together, breaking through them by going faster than the waves themselves, causes a shock wave. That's when you hit mach 1 plus. The fastest she's ever traveled is mach 10. And that's so f***ing fast. Like, you can't even see that. Not by any chance.
The boom is so powerful that everything that comes into touch with the huge wave as it spreads, can feel a super loud sound and a huge wave shaking everything, kind of like a "smooth" earthquake.
It's so powerful it'll probably kill you, but Dash can handle it just fine. Now that's some impressive sh*t.

I think Rainbow Dash went so fast that when she ran into the cloud, the speed was so fast that it shot the water droplets every where, and also ran into a light barrier, thus making it go in all directions, thus a big rainbow circle going in all directions( Not realistic, but it's FANTASY )

In The Return of Harmony, as mentioned, Twilight effectively makes a Sonic Twiboom on the ground.
She was a unicorn at the time.
So if pegasi create Sonic Booms in the air, and unicorns presumably on the ground, where do earth ponies create it? Using of course a perfect scenario where earth ponies could in fact perform Sonic Earthbooms.

I think it's the magic wave theory (lay lines) which penetrate all reality if these work via vibration or other stuff (can't explain with out an essay) then pegus manipulate these so they can control weather, really it's mainly so clouds and water vapour are solid to them... this would mean that at a certain speed they compresses spewing a power but still invisible boom of magic... the color is do to this magic manipulating photos... I do not think that a different pony would have a different rainboom...

I absolutely adore how this is consistent with my headcanon of Equestrian magic having its own quantum particle the properties of which can be manipulated (kind of like Pratchett's "thaum"); it's really plausible that for Pegasi it operates more or less like a photon, except dispersing as magical waves rather than electromagnetic ones. Assuming they travel at a speed slower than light for whatever reason, of course, though it doesn't necessarily have to be 343m/s (which might explain why Dashie's mach cone before hitting the Rainboom is Mach 5-esque).

I missed listening to people analyze My Little Pony. Since DigiBrony moved to anime, BronyCurious moved to.... idk what he does now. Saber Spark moved to cartoons in general, and Anytony C is mostly silent, it's nice to know that there are still some people that care about the fictional science of this universe. I forgot what drew me to MLP in the first place. The world. This world is just so fascinating to think about, research, and analyze. It feels like such a real place as much as Westeros or Middle Earth. I think this level of world building in a cartoon is only matched by Avatar... or if there are more world building cartoons out there, let me know! I'd love to watch them. (And before you say it, yes I know Steven Universe and Gravity Falls... I just haven't got around to it yet) But I know Star Vs the Forces of Evil is looking like a good cartoon. And maybe there are some new ones coming out.

The fact that Rainbow Dash seems to have to lead with both front legs while her failed attempts were when she was leading with only one leg may be related to how divers lead with both arms usually, with the bullet-like shape making it easier to break through. Am I right there?

This was the first explanation I had of a sonic boom that I properly understood.

+TheBronyNotion being a pilot, this is my area of expertise. A vapor cone is basically pressurized air in the form of a cloud. It is this because of the water vapor is warming up, and at the verge of breaking the barrier, it instantly cools forming a water vapor ring, so it could technically be a refracting process because of the compact water vapor spreading out

What if Pegasi produce sound through their wings? Like when Scootaloo flutters her wings they sound like a humming bird. And yes I know we can't really hear Pegasi flap their wings but if you listen closely you can. But idk that's just my theory

As far as the rainbow,  I think that it is just a huge wave of light and clouds that have been moved by the audible blast. #VIBRATIONS ARE SOUND

I think it’s not so much that magic itself works like waves, but a large burst of magic can create a wave-like effect.

I have a theory. Maybe (because in the episode revealing rainbow’s parents and her father has a rainbow mane) her father was the first to do the rainboom, or one of rainbow’s ancestors. Maybe rainbow hair is a genetic mutation and a dominant gene?

Now I’m curious, what is Rainbow Dash’s top speed or cruising speed in meters per second? I don’t know if it’s possible, we would have to measure how fast she moves every second in certain scenes, and that would require some kind of yardstick to measure by. Thus, if we can establish canon measurements for Rainbow, we can thus derive her speed. Alternatively, we could figure out how to get m/s from “wingpower”, which I believe might be the only measuring system we’ve ever seen used. We can assume this is a unit of power, like horsepower, and so is probably equal to a unit of energy (or a unit of length times a unit of mass) per a unit of time (probably seconds). Rainbow is stated to have generated “16.5 wingpower” at what we can assume is normal cruising speed, so are there any way physics buffs out there who might know what a “wingpower” is and how fast she’s going?

I like the theory but sadly in Season 7 episode 7 "Parental Glideance" it shows rainbow dash and the other members of the wonderbolts breaking the sound barrier during one of there training sessions and it was just a normal sonic boom.

to add to your theory, in one of the mlp episodes they say that no pegesi can do the sonic rainboom, so i do think that rainbow dash is probably the only posible pony who could do the sonic rainboom

The magic boom could be similar to a sonic boom but instead of sound waves, it’s light waves. Where as there is a small amount a water in the atmosphere it could reflect off, it could also reflect the light spectrum off of any sweat the Pegasus pony produced at going at a high rate of speed due to as in a few other episodes, we saw that magic produces light. Or it could pick up the extra colors reflecting off of the mane or tail of the pony. Since there isn’t really a light blue in Rainbow Dash’s sonic rainboom, nor is there the same shade of purple as Twilight’s coat in her failed fail-safe spell. Also, I don’t know if anybody else noticed this or not but, Rainbow Dash’s mane and tail have small specks of light similar to the ones Princesses Celestia and Luna have, which could be any excess magic to amplify the colors that are reflected into the sky.

I think she is the first pony to pole off the sonic rainboom because she is the only pony with rainbow fir twilight on that one episode wher terec got out she went so fast purple magic was left behind so she would of done a purple magic rainboom so the coler of the fir the coler the rainboom

i think that when a pony moves fast enough an is about to break through the sound, the colour of that pony's mane and tail is partly blown off into the sonic boom. That explains how no pony has done a sonic rainboom apart from rainbow dash.

I wonder if any Pegasus perform anything similar to Rainbow Dash's sonic boom. Who knows - there might be a new Pegasus introduced (sometime in My Little Pony's latest season) who's got the grace and speed to do such a thing! Also, am I the only one who's curious about how & why ponies can play guitars and banjos, despite having HOOVES???

OK, here's my theory about the Sonic Rainboom.


We all know Rainbow Dash could be the fastest pony in Equestria. And Rainbow Dash wasn't the only pony who did the Sonic Rainboom. Know how I know? Because one of the ponies from a long time ago maybe pulled off the Sonic Rainboom. And the Sonic Rainboom is based on the pony's color. But it was usually meant for Dashie. And the Rainboom was supposed to be a rainbow. That's why it's called a Rainboom. But when other ponies do it, it's just called a Sonic Boom. Because they aren't rainbow mane colored. When Twilight did her Failsafe spell, a Sonic Boom appeared out of the spell. Which is described in the Brony Notion's video. But it's called a Sonic Boom. Because it isn't a rainbow. That's why the Rainboom is based on their color. So it makes sense that Dashie was only one meant to do a Sonic Rainboom.





But then again, that's just a theory!!! A Sonic Rainboom MLP Friendship is Magic theory! :P This might be true, but if it isn't, reply and correct me. Thank you!

I guess that Sonic Rainboom has more powerful than a nuclear bomb that wipe out the whole town. Has you ever seen “The Day After” where nuclear explosions were depressing? That was sad about happened in the film, and it was based on the events of the nuclear crisis, and that was from 1983.

I've seen pictures and in real life jet fighters actually doing a sonic rainboom. Apparently by flying high and fast enough the ice crystals that form on the plane will fall off and correct me if I'm wrong because I seriously think that this is the wrong phrase but the light refracts...? Or maybe reflects of these ice crystals (been a long time since I studied light) and creates a rainbow and when a so nice boom happens a mixture of crystals are ejected from the plane which creates that cloud effect. Bit more sciencey than that but I'm sure you get the picture so if the sun is in the right position and so is the plane you can create a sonic rainboom.

Okay, maybe I'm going a little bit crazy... but don't we see what Twilight's Sonic Magicboom would look like when she does her flyby in "Princess Twilight Sparkle, Part 2"? Or is that some spell that she casts rather than going through the trouble to go supersonic (which we see she's able to do, later on in "Twilight's Kingdom, Part 2")?

I have to disagree with Pinkies explanation. When Rainbow dash does the rainboom, we clearly see a Mach Cone formed around Rainbow Dash already, which means she is already traveling faster than sound. My theory is that Rainbow Dash is getting close enough to the speed of light that it causes a Sound Boom type effect for light. Anything with Mass cannot reach the speed of Light, but can reach relativistic speeds. I think in this universe when something with mass gets close enough to this speed in an atmosphere, it causes a sonic boom like effect with the photons around them istead of sound waves. (Vs battle Wiki proves that Rainbow Dash moves relativistic to the speed of light.)

Pegasi, Earth Ponies, and Unicorns all have their own unique magic, I know this because of S4 Ep25-26 as Tirek gets magic from all Unicorns, Earth Ponies, and Pegasi. And if you have a pegasi that goes fast enough, it leaves their own unique trail, Rainbow Dash just happens to go fast enough to create a trail easily. and her trail just happens to be a Rainbow, the faster she goes, the longer and thicker the trail gets because more pegasi magic is going in each part of it. The magic energy of the pegasi that makes the trail spreads on the sonic boom that creates all the colors, but this also explains why she leaves a rainbow so thick that it stays there longer then a normal rainbow should, it is also so thick you can see the colors of the rainbow as if it was a table that your painted the colors in order on. Btw if you noticed, when she goes fast enough there is rainbow infront of her too, I believe I can also explain that, sense her body is going so fast the preasure waves are all touching her because of her speeds, the magic that makes the trail spreads on the preasure waves too, which also explains how the magic spreads on the sonic rainboom. btw I would says the your theory of a sonic boom is correct, but the rainbow part is just no.
In the same seqson and episodes of how I knew all types of ponies has magic, Twilight gets enough magic to go so fast that she leaves a trail too, which shows that not just Rainbow Dash has her own unique trail, and in S3 Ep17 Thunder Dust had a trail too, and thwy were all faster at the times then ponies that didn't have a trail, which meant that my theory of the trail is actually pegasi magic is true.

My theory is that pegasi have magic, not as apparent as unicorns, but still magic this magic however does not give them the ability to fly i believe that is down to there phyical form (wings)science, in the episode twighlit's kingdom we see him absorb their magic this could of been that magic and because this drained their energy this caused them to not be able to fly, we didnt even see them try to fly so perhaps if this magic was drained but they still had the energy they could still be able to fly. So the rainboom that rainbow dash did was pure science as we see sawtooth explain it, but the colours that we see was all down to magic, another good example of this was when twighlit performed a similar trick with magic which was in her colour, this only shows that what rainbowdash did was her inner magic.

I finally understand how she moves fast as she can for a SONIC RAINBOOM!

I believe a Sonic Rainboom can only be pulled off when the true magic of friendship is present. I mean think about it, when Rainbow Dash created her first sonic boom when she was a filly, the Mane 6 all got their cutie marks at the same time. Then in the other episode, it was only when the non-pegasi ponies of the Mane 6 were cheering her on that she was able to do it again. Just a theory but HAY whatever. :)

This is very plausible. Thinking over to Friendship Games, where there was a lot of magical malarkey going on, I noticed two instances where magic waves appear to exist. First, Twilight's pendant. It's told she made the pendant to track 'EM frequencies', which are waves. Her device tracks waves, and waves are caused by energy, so who's to say magic energy can't cause waves? (For how her pendant actually trapped magic inside itself, I'd consider that the pendant only tracks EM energy and when tracking magic it acts different due to the magic acting on it.) Later in the movie, when Midnight Sparkle opened up rifts to Equestria, how could it be that Sunset could drag the magic out of the HuMane 5 when it had already been taken out? When the rifts opened, magic waves radiated into the human world and restored the magic inside them. Equestria is a magical place, and I'm guessing that with all the magical ponies in that land, magic waves are emitted by them into the air and fill the land.

Something I wonder about the sonic rain boom : as you see the rainbow trail merges with rainbow dashes tail, so if a different colored pony could do it so if twilight did it would it be purple? And while I was typing that he said it would WOW.

If starlight did change the past or if RD never did a sonic rainboom that makes me believe that if she never did one equestria would be taken over by: Nightmare moon, Discord, Tirek, midnight sparkle, starlight, queen chrysalis, sunset shimmer, pony of shadows, king sombra, the sirens and in the my little pony movie Tempest shawdow and the storm king.

Rainbow dash isn’t the only pony that has done it. It season 4 episode 2 at the end twilight goes into the sky and does a rainboom. Also in season 3 episode 2, the crystal heart does something similar to a rainboom
