Finally Solving the Alicorn Amulet

I do have one issue with this theory.

If the Alicorn amulet gave Sombra's power to Trixie - the same way Grogar's bell gave magic to Cozy Glow - why didn't Trixie become a temporary alicorn like Cozy did?

Perhaps because Grogar's bell directly zapped the magic into them, while the amulet only allowed Trixie to access the power indirectly?

According to the comics, Sombra is actually a creature called an Umbrum who took on the form of a pony to infiltrate the crystal empire. But it’s also been viewed by a lot of people that the comics are a non-canon or alternate universe.
So this is still very possible!

Further theory: The reason he wears a cloak is because his ashamed of a wingless body. That and he's half-Kirin.

Also unrelated theory that the Alicorn Amulet was actually Prismia's necklace in Cadence's origin story, and the Alicorn Amulet can be defeated with Love.

FACT: Sombra's mane always moving.

Or the Allicorn amulet was made by Sombra by using his own power to make him self more powerful, kinda like Suron did with his one ring to rule them all.

I like the idea that the alicorn amulet was created by Grogar or some other unknown villain, along with several other artifacts, and that the artifacts were responsible for corrupting a few ponies and creatures, such as Sombra, and possibly Stygian.

After 5 years, he's still got it.

I actually have a backstory for the amulet and Sombra, please read it, even though it is extremely long: Long ago, after Gusty the Great defeated Grogar, she encountered Sombra, who was the first ever alicorn seen. Gusty confronted Sombra, who told her he was created from thin air, his body and soul made up of dark magic that lurks deep among the shadows of the unknown. Gusty knew she couldn't defeat Sombra on her own, but also knew she couldn't let him plunge the world into darkness. Gusty fled to the Everfree Forest, where she found an abandoned shrine. She entered, using her magic to light a path. At the end of the shrine, she found an old tapestry with an image of a unicorn that was bearing an amulet, and was combining his magic with the amulet's to defeat a black monster. Gusty immediately knew who that unicorn was: Starswirl the Bearded. From the corner of her eye, Gusty saw something give off a faint shimmer beneath some dirt. She brushed off the filth from the item, and could not believe her eyes. Below her hoof laid an amulet, the same one from the tapestry. Gusty saw a piece of paper laying near the tapestry, it said: "The Alicorn Amulet." Gusty knew that with this amulet, she could now battle Sombra. She raced out of the shrine, running in Sombra's direction. She faced Sombra, who was charging up his powerful blast of magic. Suddenly, the amulet began to glow. When Sombra blasted Gusty, the amulet absorbed the magic. Sombra stopped blasting, not wanting the amulet to take his power, but now the amulet was draining Sombra from his magic, taking all of it. Then, Sombra's wings disappeared, and he fell to the ground. The amulet trembled, and Gusty realized it could not contain all that magic. The amulet began to change into a corrupted form, taking on the look of Sombra's alicorn form. Then, the amulet disappeared, and so did Sombra. When Trixie stumbled upon the amulet, the reason she did not become an alicorn is because that dark magic is not just dark magic, it is Sombra's dark magic, so it would only personally connect to him, and only make him an alicorn if he takes that magic. Since that magic is personally connected to Sombra, it would only boost Trixie's magic and make her evil, not make her an alicorn. That's my backstory for Sombra and the Alicorn Amulet!

I am not sold on Sombra having been an alicorn, but if we go with your theory, I would propose that Sombra made the alicorn amulet himself and infused it with his power. He would have been an alicorn while wearing the amulet, but not after losing it. It would make it his One Ring, so to speak. Of course, this begs the question why he never tried to retrieve it.

Wait a second, during the writing of this comment, Sawtooth's eyes are red in his profile. This means, either his icon is just decked up for Halloween, or, that Alicorn amulet isn't a replica, it is real?! Dun dun duuuuun!

I want to imagine that Sombra's past is more likely to Grogar's past, a powerful creature who rules an empire for Celestia knows how long and some pony step up to him and stole hs magic. Maybe the alicorn amulet works a little bit like Grogar's bell because of how powerful it is. Maybe....

Something I've been wondering about is: what's with the dragon, besides spike, in the episode Dragonshy? We already know about the dragons in the dragon lands, so what was it doing so far from the dragon lands, and why was it so big?

I've always thought that it wasn't actually corruptive, but that the surge of power it grants is just too tempting to give up easily. Power in general when in sufficient quantities can corrupt an individual.

Sombra possibly being an alicorn is interesting, but I'm more curious why he's a blank flank.

Well, i think that Sombra decided he didn't need wings and cloudwalking so much and transfomed his pegasus magic into raw magic (or maybe unicorns magic) and sealed them in an amulet, so he can have more kind of magic what he usually use.

Maybe it might have a similar affect to the element of magic in the equestria girls universe where the amulet granted him alicorn status but after somehow losing the amulet his alicorn power faded over time which is why he lost his wings - it might also explain why his horn looks different and why he seems to shatter after being defeated (i havent seen the later seasons with him so i might have some facts wrong though)

A thought just occurred to me. If removing the stolen magic made Cozy Glow a Pegasus again, why didn't the alicorn princesses revert to their original forms when their magic was given away or taken from them? I suppose it could be something like your "A Magical Comparison" video where harmoniously and disharmoniously acquired magic affect a person differently. Cozy certainly didn't earn her magic in a nice way. Maybe that's why the physical changes didn't stick for her. It reminds me of this quote from The Swan Princess. "Once you steal something, you spend your whole life fighting to keep it." None of Cozy Glow's new power ever truly became a part of her. It may as well have been in an amulet around her neck.

Often I wonder what would happen if someone used the Shadow Stygian used, the Inspiration Manifestation book, the Alicorn Amulet and Grogars Bewitching Bell at once. How far gone would the user be. What kind of threat would that brave and foolish being represent? Does he already have a stained window of him in the throne room years after Twilight became ruler? I mean you gotta admit the way all those artifacts seem to have similarities to each other in terms of function in one way or another is way to close to be a coincidence. Like someone built the other artifacts to either to combat Grogar or to take his place. Think about it Sawtooth. Think about it.

It would make some sense if Sombra started out as an evil Alicorn, someone whose power made him unbeatable by normal pony strength. Then some pony created the amulet to steal and seal enough of Sombra’s power to reduce him to being an ordinary unicorn, after which he could be defeated temporarily.

Alternatively Sombra was never an Alicorn, but he knew he might have to face an Alicorn in battle so he created the Alicorn amulet as a way of magnifying his power to the level where he could conceivably go horn to horn with Celestia and Luna when they came to put him down. Then because the magic that created the amulet was evil it would corrupt whoever tried to use it, not that this would matter to Sombra.

Regardless the amulet doesn’t just magnify or supplement the user’s power, it also gives them knowledge of spells like the age spell that no-pony knows how to do. We know that while each unicorn seems to have one cutie-mark related spell that they have innate mastery over most spells have to be learned through study, so simply having the power to do them doesn’t mean being able to do them. Actually where did that spell come from? Following the show’s internal logic it would have to be the innate spell of whoever’s power went into the Alicorn Amulet, but Sombra is never shown using that spell, his innate seems to be either those dark crystals or the nightmare visions. Actually the only pony we’ve seen do anything like an age spell unassisted is Starlight, when she was trying to play Dragon Pit with Sunburst, and that could have been an illusion. Could she have somehow created the Alicorn Amulet while trying to take revenge on Twilight?

My theory:
So the crystal ponies may seem like they’re not unicorns, Alcorns, pegasus or land ponies

Either they hid their horn or wings

Love the theory sawtooth! Considering king sombra actually being an alicirn makes sense going along with all the other royalty in equestria. However the fact that his brainwashing abilities transfered with it, make me think that he must have had domain over something evil to begin with. Or maybe it was broad and he had control over all emotions instead of love. Assuming he was king of the crystal empire it has to be and emotionally driven talent maybe envy or jealousy? I dunno but this definitely needs a follow up theory on the past of king sombra!

It makes sense to me, it would definitely explain his neverending well of confidence being that he's this strong at only half power. What I wanna know is if sombra is this powerful, exactly how powerful was he before he had his magic taken away?

I can imagine this being his reason for enslaving ponies as well, perhaps his goal was to find the missing half of his power.

Comics still portray him as a better character though, so I still prefer that sombra

Ok here's my theory: when the crystal empire was first starting, Luna nor Celestia could rule it alone. They were meant to rule together. So they enlisted the help of starswril the bearded to find a ruler of the crystal empire. After going through many candidates, Sombera was the only one who was able to rule. Starswril made him an alicorn and since they didn't have a crown they gave him the amulet as a crown. Luna and Celestia used the elements of harmony to hold the power inside the amulet bringing down Sombera for 1000 years until the crystal heart defeated him. Not sure if anyone would read this and sorry if any misspellings

Honestly to me, I always figured the Alicorn Amulet was named the way it was because it could elevate an ordinary unicorn to the power level of an alicorn, rather than the amulet having the magic of an alicorn, and I honestly thought Sombra probably made it in order to elevate his power even further and, due to the side effects of the amulet, probably discarded it as a failed experiment

I got a theory:

Maybe when Celestia and Luna first banished Sombra, they sealed away Sombra's alicorn status away into the amulet?!

theory:
maybe sombra created the amulet and stole an alicorn's magic to create it himself. he created it to resemble what he thought of himself -a really powerful pony. and he thought that only alicorns were worthy of that power, thus why he created it to transform him into one. he then became known as an alicorn when he reigned and when that mysterious pony took the amulet off him, he became ashamed and started wearing the coat. the reason why the magic didn't transform Trixie into an alicorn, was probably because she wasn't the one who made the amulet. (in my theory, i imagined he enchanted it so that only the creator of it would transform)

The one pony who would be really interesting to see the alicorn amulet used by would be Rainbow Dash. Assuming it mainly is boosting the pegasus and earth pony magics, while bringing some unicorn magic to the table, it would make her a true beast of earth and sky. She has enough earth pony magic in her to go hoof to hoof with Applejack while having the raw pegasus magic to rainboom and to cloudshape exceedingly well. She probably didn't ascend on her own in part because in her mind it is more cool to be a pegasus than to be an alicorn but mostly because of how high a pedestal she places alicornhood -- you can even see it in the episode where alicorn twilight tries to challenge filly rainbow dash to a race. Filly rainbow dash could fly rings around twilight but doesn't even TRY. I also wonder if she is corruptible by it -- it doesn't seem in her nature -- she likes power, but it isn't power over other ponies. She's more happy to leave other ponies in awe than to have them do things for her, seeking adoration and ego fulfillment rather than dominance. I think the amulet would find her more a conundrum than Twilight finds Pinkie. Each time it would think it has an opening into her psyche, it wouldn't work, or would be irrelevant for controlling her.

I have a question: if Sombra lost his wings by the amulet that means only wing magic is in the amulet? so what is the Pegasus or is pretty wore to wear it?

King Sombra used to be King Kolbalt, he was a unicorn that ruled Equestria before Celestia and Luna were alive. When the sisters took the throne, Kolbalt was furious and stole magic from all 3 tribes instead of earning it, making him an alicorn. Then Star Swirl used the Amulet to rip the magic that he stole from the tribes, and locked it into the amulet. Star Swirl then used the amulet to banish Sombra from the land, causing him to find the Crystal Empire- Take over it- Get defeated, so on.

Idk, it's just a thought. Haha!

I love your video! Although I have to ask, what if (in a universe where a. Sombra was somehow given a high seat if powerful and b. the givers knew he was a shadow pony, therefore rendering him incapacitated of becoming an alicorn) the amulet was given to Sombra as a way to gain powers equivalent to alicorns? Heck, what if the alicorn amulet originally signified a deep level of trust between an outsider and the royal family and was corrupted by Sombra in some tragic tale of his quest for power (although that wouldn't explain why or how the curator pony had it, much less put it up for sale).

I think sombra is an alicorn. Considering the fact that he enslaved an entire Empire and that it took a while for Celestia and Luna to realise that proves his magical abilities. What I don't understand is who he is. Was he living in canterlot before enslaving the crystal Empire? Where did he learn that magic from?
IS HE A PONY OR A GOD?? Then is he similar to Stygian, that shadow pony??

I very much agree, I mean it all makes SENSE! Your theories are like no others, you have evidence and you are clever, that’s everything you need to have a good theory. Well done on your videos Sawtooth Waves.

My theory is that there are several kinds of magic:

Normal magic — this magic is used by all ponies, (including earth ponies and Pegasi being that they seem to have some amount magic as well judging by how tirek could steal magic from them) this magic is very stable and easily controlled but lacks physicality, rarely being able to create objects and barely doing much physical damage.

Alicorn magic — alicorn magic is a more focused and refined form of normal magic, this allows the magic to interact better with the environment and create more powerful bursts of magical energy. when a pony’s body has a large surplus of normal magic, it causes the body to increase in size to better fit the density of the magic currently present, though, this change isn’t instantaneous, this also causes a pony to gain the attributes of the other 2 ‘races’

Evil magic — evil magic is used by ponies like sombra, this magic is highly volatile and can be used for combat in a way that normal magic cannot. This magic is easy to direct but difficult to control, this causes beams of magical energy to be powerful, but inaccurate. This sort of magic can actually take a toll on a pony’s psyche and cause them to do bad stuff. This magic cannot be used to create an alicorn

Changeling magic — changeling magic is a version of normal magic, specifically created for changelings to use, this magic can integrate into a changelings biology, allowing them to change shape and form at will. This magic can also be described as invasive meaning that it can absorb other forms of magic

Chaos magic — chaos magic is a form of magic created whenever something happens that is strange or uncommon, this magic can be used by draconnoques to create objects out of nothing and convert matter

Funnily enough, I have one details that goes way too well along this theory and one that goes so much the other I cannot see how this theory can remain valid.

- The detail that goes along is when Zecora asked Twilight to use alicorn magic and she used something that made her look very much as if she was under Sombra's influence.

- The details that goes against is Tirek. Tirek sucked the magic out of alicorns (born and made) but none of them lost their alicorn status.

I agree with the theory, however, when Sombra got released by Grogar, why didn't he come back for the amulet- was it destroyed or sealed away for good? I forgot. I was going to ask why Trixie didn't get wings but what if the amulet only contained half the magic that would be needed to get wings

When he uses the word 'Finally' you know it's something big

Honestly, I feel like Sombra created the amulet himself, to store his power for another occasion. Perhaps it went wrong and he lost his memory of it, or he's not revealing it because he eventually wants to regain his power.

He could have done this as to not lose some war (which is funny, since he said "I may not have won the battle, but I will win the war!" or something like that), or he could have attempted to amplify his power and failed.

Trixie probably wouldn't become an Alicorn.. because it WASN'T her magic. It wouldn't have fit at full capacity.

My only possible issue with the theory is when the princesses gave up their magic to hide it from Terik.

If having their magic taken away changes them into regular ponies/unicorns/pegasi, then why didn't they?

Why Trixie didn't become an alicorn?
I have two theories.
1.Amulet did not give her all magic that it posses.Amulet only corrupted her for one reason,to bring back it to Sombra.You wonder why trixie did not return amulet to Sombra,because he is dead,so amulet stayed with trixie.

2.Trixie did not take all magic inside the amulet,because she knew that it would be to much for her and she would not be able to control it.

Hmmm...interesting theory. Though, I may have something to add. Maybe he created it using all of his alicorn magic -- both light magic and dark magic. The light magic is the gem itself while containing dark magic making it a cursed item.

Interesting theory, and since Sombra's backstory from "My Little Pony: FIENDship is Magic Issue #1" and following four-part story "Siege of the Crystal Empire" were simply obliterated by the 9th season of MLP:FiM, it is perfectly possible.

But if I'm being honest, it's a shame that concepts from "My Little Pony: FIENDship is Magic Issue # 1" did not made to the show, as this comic issue brought the topic of FATE into the universe that puts so much value in finding/forging your own destiny.

Also, how many Alicorn Amulets exist now? You have one, Silver Quill has one, and Cellestia knows who else has one...

Sombra might be an ex alicorn due to him have tried to rule the empire more the once the crystal princess may have had the magic to zap his magic out of him and stored it in a magical crystal. Which made him only have a horn.

In my own world, I think that Sombra was once an alicorn that ruled the crystal empire normally -- not evilly. We've seen that he can create crystals, so maybe he made a magical crystal that could store energy. Over time, Sombra came to realize that the Amulet was draining his power and not just storing it. Sombra became very weak due to this and sought help to find out how he could restore his strength. Someone (not sure who) told him he would need to give up his wings and become a unicorn (or vise versa). He chose to keep his horn and found someone to take his wings. Some time after, Sombra became corrupt and took over the empire. I would think Sombra wouldn't care much to hide the Amulet well. So once he was defeated, the Amulet was found, and disposed of. Along the way, someone found it and it was passed from pony to pony, eventually landing with Trixie.

It could explain his obsession with the crystal empire. Maybe he managed to absorb their magic somehow, from all pony races and became an alicorn??
And for the trixie thing, seeing how it was corrupting her the more she used it. Maybe she didn’t become an alicorn because her transformation wasn’t done yet.

My issue with this theory lies in how the princesses retained their forms after they were drained by both Tirek and the Bell. Now perhaps it was a magnifying amulet that sombra used to become an alicorn, and Trixie just didn't know how to use it properly or wasn't strong enough to do that by herself. however there seems to be a fundamental difference between true alicorns and a temporary one like what Cozy Glow became

I would argue that if the Alicorn Amulet truly was Sombra's, that he would have searched for it after getting resurrected. Instead, he immediately went out to conquer the Crystal empire. One could argue that he didn't need it anymore, but that is just speculation at best.

I have one possibility of who or what stole Sombra's Magic,

I may sound crazy but I feel like It was grogar... He stopped sombra from using it by well,

Stealing it when he was a good male alicorn, That is Ponykind's First ever alicorn prince.

However when he was evil, he got SOME of his good power back and turned it into evil,

But then, Trixie stole the amulet and...You know what happens.

We know that Sombra has very strong magic, he may have been able to steal magic from his subjects in order to make himself an alicorn. However, Sombra isn't a pony, he's an Umber (yes, this is comic canon, but it is never contradicted in show.) This, I think, explains the corruption aspect. Similar to how Pinkie couldn't handle Discord's magic, Trixie couldn't handle Sombra's magic, which corrupted her. We know from School Raze that different creatures have different kinds of magic. This is also seen in how the Kirin have powers similar to unicorns, but it is different (Kirin aura is different than unicorn aura.). I think that the Alicorn Amulet corrupts because it is not meant to be used by ponies.

BTW, additional evidence:
Remember the season 4 premiere when the forest was invading...Zecora came to ponyville and helped twilight with a potion. But in order for the potion to work, "alicorn" magic needs to be used. Noticed that twilights magic beam is the same as Sombra.

Sombra has no connections with any princesses (not even the two sisters), maybe its possible that sombra is replicating alicorn magic and created the artifact. We all know that sombra has powerful knowledge in magic (banishing an entire empire), maybe Sombra managed to find out how to use alicron magic without having wings or without becoming an alicorn (notice that sombra never used wings when he came back). Why would he try to learn or replicate alicorn magic (why choose to rule the crystal empire specifically, in season 4 and 9)?? Maybe some royalty denied Sombra of his right to become an alicorn and seeked revenge on the ruler of the empire . Kinda like the antagonist in kung fu panda...lol...also this theory holds because Sombra got vanished the same time he cursed the empire (without being an alicorn), I would assume that sombra got vanished without wings because he came back without one.

You know, Sombras character is based on Sauron from "Lord of the rings". And...maybe he put his magic in amulet himself? To save his magic like Sauron did?

so we all know Sombra used to or tried to rule that crystal empire, and he obviously ruled it before Cadence did so maybe whoever defeated him created the amulet to steal his alicorn magic

Personally I think Sombra was hired by an alicorn to create it (before his hostile takeover of The Crystal Empire) but part of his plan was to enchant it with dark Magic to corrupt the alicorn who hired him but the alicorn caught on and got rid of it

I think he was always an aliorn too, but when he was defeated the first time, he lost his alicorn powers and the alicorn amulet was created from it somehow.

Alright, I'll bite. If I had to guess, and we go of speculation that he's a pony and not an umbrum like in the comics, I'd guess that the Alicorn amulet is something made by either Starswirl, Celestia/Luna, or Sombra himself.

On the thought that Sombra was an Alicorn initially (leaving us unsure how he got the power in the first place) the amulet is, as you said, an artifact that sealed away some of his power. I would think it something either Starswirl or one of the sisters created to use before defeating him to hinder his power, as it is possible this happened before the pony of shadows (who knows, they only ever used 1000 years/moons/etc.) Later it was lost/stolen/found by someone of the general public and wound up in circulation at the curio shop.

On the other hand, it could be something that Sombra manifested himself from his own power, hence why it looks so much like him. Alicorn sombra is enjoying his tyranny in the crystal empire, ruling his enslaved and mind controlled ponies, and gets word that the princesses are on the rise with the intent to take him down. We all know he was smart enough to hide the crystal heart in his castle, requiring the use of dark magic to find, etc, etc. Suppose that on top of that, he sealed away some of his Alicorn magic and turned it into an amulet, intending to use it when he returned to regain his former glory. The idea being that he had no idea how/if they would defeat him, and if they had taken away his magic, some would still exist for him to rule with. Likely, in this scenario, the princesses found that amulet inside the empire just before sealing him away, or someone else found it afterward just outside the empire. They examined and recorded it's power, but it was lost or stolen somehow, which is how it got into circulation, and eventually the curio shop where trixie found it.

Random question, excluding Shining Armor, is it possible to have more male Alicorns (Stallicorns)?
Personally I like the thought that there's the potential for more than just one male Alicorn. The only two (sorry, biggest ) problems my short-circuiting brain has found with this is what they would be the Stallicorns of, and who said Stallicorns would be. Now I like to include people's OCs whenever I go theory crafting after a series has ended, which opens up probably hundreds (of thousands?) of candidates to be Stallicorns. Then there's canon characters of which we happily have no shortage.
And then there's another thing which gives a nod back to your Reforming Cozy Glow video. That Cozy was originally a pegasus but became an alicorn through consuming magic of different kinds other than her own. Which to my brain = pegasi can become alicorns. Which opens up yet another section of Equestrian Stallicorn candidates.
My final theory which is mostly just speculative questions at this point is: can an earth pony become a Stallicorn? Probably crazy, and I'd like to go back to your video on Pinkie and note she did not gain a horn or wings in the few seconds she was using Discord's power. Originally I would've thought "oh well I guess that rules out Earth Ponies", but thinking a little more made me wonder. What if Cozy Glow had been an earth pony, not a pegasus? Would she still have become an Alicorn? Personally I think the answer is yes

This might just be a long shot but maybe he became an alicorn thanks to a magic we only see him use, creating crystal from nothing. Sombras Crystals are Unique and are actually very strong, they were able to destroy the tree of harmony with ease even when it was at full power, and they are capable of canceling teleportation and who knows what other magic they are capable of resisting. Now imagen that power being used by an alicorn, who knows what they could do, on a after thought, When Tirek learned of Twilights existence his first question was where her castle was, so maybe it was common for alicorns to posses a castle. Now what type of castle would fit Sombra, The crystal Palace. What if Sombras magic as an alicorn was so strong that he could make buildings and homes, It would explain some things about the Crystal empire like how they were able to make an entire city out of crystals, the unique design the palace itself has, and even the snowflake pattern the stretches across the entire empire. We know the crystal ponies can pour their love into the ground and into the crystal heart, but what if Sombra in his prime could use that same pathway but in reverse, sending magic from the palace to anywhere in the empire. This would give Sombra the power to attack invaders at anytime and in any direction making him practically invincible. Now into a little story I thought that would work with this. Sombras enemies could not reach him since his crystals would just capture them if no matter where they are in the empire so they came up with a plan. Somepony would get close to Sombra as a friend and then use an artifact to steal his magic and it worked and the alicorn amulet was born, and with part of Sombras magic, his very being was cut off it started to warp him, getting deranged and mad as time went by like a soldier losing his arm and not getting proper help. In Sombras confusion he started getting the personality we see in the show wanting to get back what he lost but now he does not trust anyone so he uses mind control so that he will not be betrayed again.

This theory is so believable! Remember in season 4 Twilight used "alicorn magic" to transform Zecora's drink? It looked like Sombra's magic, that could explain... things...

There's one hole in the theory though. When Celestia and Luna got their magic sucked away, they didn't lose anything, although it could be because they were born with a horn... Hm...

Thing is, Sombra was at no point just your standard unicorn (if we take into account the comic Canon). He's an umbrum. He was merely molded into the shape of a pony and had his powers sealed away in order to be able to leave the prison of the umbrum below the crystal empire. The notion that he's not a standard unicorn in the show either is reinforced by the fact that he's vulnerable to the crystal heart and that even as an adult he's still lacking a cutie mark.
That being said, it is also worth mentioning that umbrum in their natural Form do have wings, though from what I remember they lack horns.

But I definitely think that the Amulet is in some way connected to him. Maybe as an artifact created by him (and infused with his power) in an attempt to give him Alicorn-like abilities.

I'm sure that if Twilight and others use the power of the elements of harmony, the Alicorn Amulet will no longer have the magic lock and will not corrupt the mind of that pony who uses it, because even if the elements of harmony are broken, Twilight and the others still have the magic of the friendship that was stored in them

Now I have a theory. If the amulet gave a unicorn Alicorn levels of magic, what would it do to a Pegasus or an earth pony? My own theory is that it would enhance their own kind of magic to Alicorn levels. A Pegasus would essentially get Alicorn levels of speed, and an earth pony would get alicorn levels of strength.

A very informative theory I'd say, but I would have to disagree on the fact that King Sombra was previously an Alicorn. I've always fascinated by King Sombra's origin and the connection with the Alicorn Amulet - both have some similarities where both characteristics have the ability to manipulate others. While King Sombra already being powerful, there isn't evidence on whether or not if King Sombra knows about the Alicorn Amulet - if he did, when he was released in Season 9 why didn't he go after the amulet in the first place? He definitely would've used it against the mane6 and from there he would've stop them at an instant but the amulet was locked up or practically destroyed by now. That's all I gotta say. the alicorn looks more like the pony of shadows to me (with the long horn, don't think that's right either though) and if it was sombra the horn would be at least curved but it's not, I think although it could work it isn't close enough.

I liken the Alicorn Amulet to The One Ring from The Lord of The Rings, with Sombra being its Sauron. He put all his Alicorn power into it, once he gets it back, he would far more powerful than any other alicorn

For some reason even tho your theory makes complete sense to me, I feel that the alicorn amulet resembles the pony of shadows. Because the shadow creature had an alicorn's wings and horn.

This also explains sombra’s backstory, he ruled the crystal empire as an Alicorn, his magic got sucked into the amulet, he couldn’t rule the empire any more, Cadance is the new ruler of the empire, sombra keep on trying and trying to redeem the empire.

I'm just going to operate on the idea that Sombra is an artificial alicorn, with the amulet being how he became one. If he, at any point, would have access to it that is. Also, quick question: Why does Sci-Twi pony up with wings in the human world, yet is just a regular unicorn in Equestria?

Perhaps he wears that cape to hide his shame, the lack of wings he used to have.

Or, perhaps he used that amulate to make himself an alicorn. For a normal unicorn like Trixie, it just gave her a power boost, but for King Sombra, already very powerful, it was just enough extra magic to boost him over the edge into Alicornhood. Perhaps it was lost, or stolen, so he gave up on raw power and turned to mind control magic instead.

Maybe you can go over all you're old theories and show which ones were true, which were debunked, which changed, and ones we will never know the truth to.

Interesting theory, but I think it might be backwards - with Sombra creating the Amulet as part of an attempt to ASCEND to Alicornity. He's not one for ascending via virtues - he brute-forces everything. He's powerful enough to conquer Equestria single-hoofedly, but he's also short-sighted enough to lose it even quicker than he got it. This is the sort of person I could see pouring more and more and more magic - stolen from his subjects? - into the Amulet, expecting that "any second now" it would tip over some unknowable threshold and grant him wings.

We saw cozy glow become a ex-alicorn because she wasnt a true alicorn to begin with. The way I see it Sombra would have to be in the same boat as cozy was. A pony turned into a alicorn thanks to excess magic from a ancient relic. We haven't seen a alicorn who earned their wings lose them if I remember correctly, so that's what I thought

Him being an ex-alicorn actually explained how he became a king because it always buggd me how he became a king if he was just a unicorn.. but this makes so much sense to me and I can understand how he has the title king if he is just a unicorn .... mind... blown

I think the same thing you do but I think his wings were physically taken. Like they were ripped off of him. I know that sounds gruesome and gory but mlp is set in (I'm pretty sure but not absolutely certain) medieval times and punishments back then where terrifying. So I think that Sombra did something (like treason or something close to it) to get his wings ripped off. I think that that's why he (I presume) kept his alicorn like power when his wings were taken. Now you might ask "Then why wasn't Cozy Glow's horn ripped off?" Well... she's a kid and was being handled by the main 6. The main 6 isn't gonna rip off the horn of a child, but I'm sure that if she was handled back then before the main 6 then she might have had her horn AND wings taken from her.

This is just my ippionion but i think your right about sombra being an ex-alicorn, but as you mentioned there are other questions unanswerd like how he became an alicorn and i think i have an idea.

so sombra was a normal unicorn who had about the same amount of magic as twilight before she met her friends. Much like twilight he was taken under the wings off a alicorn a celestia type figure named sunstrike, sunstrike is the same sunstrike who is celestias mother and old ruler of the crystal empire, this would explain why celestia could do a dark spell much like sombras and maybe thats how twilight could do it its just a thing past down for pretection against evil, just incase it evr would reach the empire.
fast forward a couple years like twilight sombra gained be a alicorn but one faitfull day he came across sunstrikes hidden possestion that she stole from the king who ruled the empire before her the alicorn amulet, sombra used it for great evil eventualy destroying sunstrike and taking controll over the whole empire, but celestia and luna defeated him and became rulers of equestria when the empire returned twilight ,spike and her friends helped defeat sombra and restored the empire and the ponies then shortly after cadence took over the crystal empire with celestias permision and much like sombra had gained alicorn powers but instead of spreading hate and envy she spread the exact oppostite love. Fast forward to when sombra came back and was defeated again by twilight and her friends and the student 6 he had the power to destroy the tree of harmony the power not even discord had when he destroyed it he was in a smoke form much like night mare moon appeard in , in the first ever episode of mlp friendship is magic, maybe when he appeard as smoke he gained his alicorn powers back giving him the magic he needed to destroy the tree.

Perhaps the amulet was created when he was initially destroyed as something akin to a 'horcrux'. Thus it would not physically change anypony else, yet it could still influence their mental state and their power in a way of possession. Can explain why he came back in the episodes without wings. Yet if he ended up getting the amulet himself, it could trigger a reaction that would restore his full self.

Just a thought....
I think it is called an alicorn amulet because of the fact that it contains tremendous amount of energy in it. I mean, for one thing, Grogar is not an alicorn for the record, but he does have a magic power and wisdom that compete the two sisters' themselves.

One more note, I don't know if this will also count but, when Tirek sucked out the "alicorn magic" from Twilight, it did not really remove her wings (the same goes with the 3 other princesses).
(But I also thought that maybe, there is this wall between taking somepony's magic and taking a pony's "alicorness.")

This leads me to 2 conclusions:
1. That an evil from the past stored his magic within the amulet so that his evil deeds can still prosper even if he disappears or better yet,
2. that pony (or creature) stored himself within the amulet and gives his victims powers but at the same time, feeds from their evil deeds which corrupts them (or controls them).

If the amulet did absorb his alicorn magic like the Bewitching Bell, wouldn't he no longer be able to cast spells like as a unicorn? Besides, the bell stole Celestia and Luna's magic, and they kept their wings. And the bell is supposed to be a more powerful artifact.

Maybe Sombra had enought of his own magic so that the amulet would boost his to the alicorn form. While Trixie is so powerless (sorry Trixie fans) that even the boost couldn't get her that high up.

I’d like to think the whole Sombra and the Alicorn Amulet thing is similar to his form in the L Trains wonderful symphonic metal Opera: Fall of an Empire, where Sombra had a magical artifact that made him immortal, it gave him purple transparent onyx wings, like an Alicorn....who knows it could be a possibility that Sombra created the Alicorn Amulet so he could rule the Crystal Empire forever, but then Celestia and Luna took him down, leaving the Alicorn Amulet behind

It could easily be something created from Sombras defeat, like his hatred for Alicorns manifesting as an alicorn amulet.

Also "the amulet explains him being an x Alicorn" you need actual proof he was one to begin with and no Cozy Glow being one once ISN'T an answer.

I think there's enough to say the amulet is related to or connected to Sombra however your claim the magic was taken away from him and stored into an amulet like this isn't really supported and only goes off random assumptions.

Meanwhile using the logic that there is a good likely Hood Sombra was the original unicorn king and lost his throne because of Alicorns he would have reason to hate them, not become them, hence mastering dark magic and becoming more powerful than all the Alicorns (which if you'd like I can prove as well.)

But if removing the magic from an Alicorn makes them become an EX-Alicorn, then back when Tirek wreaked havoc in Season 4, why didn't Cadence lose her Horn(since she was born a Pegasus), and Twilight didn't lose her wings? I'd understand if Celestia & Luna were both Born as Alicorns and their Horns & Wings were Naturally a part of them, but Cadence & Twilight both Ascended into Alicorns, so if it was being filled with a specific kind of magic that was keeping them as Alicorns, then when Cadence transferred All her Alicorn Magic to Twilight, and Tirek drained Twilight of All the Alicorn magic, then why didn't those two become EX-Alicorns like your theory would suggest?

I think I agree with your theory. Maybe, at first, Sombra was a good pony? So someone changed him into an Alicorn- But he became evil and did not want to lose his alicorn power, so he ran away? But a few decades later someone stole the Amulet from him. Remember who sold the Amulet to Trixie? I think his(The one who sold the Alicorn Amulet) relative or one of his ancestors stole it from Sombra so that he wouldn't be too powerful and destroy whatsoever...

That's why when Trixie tried to access that power, she became corrupt as that's what happened to Stegien. As power is never lost, it must be contained in something, as in the alicorn amulet.

It could have been the two sister when they came to fight him in the past. If he was very Powerful and good at fighting with his magic they could have use the amulet to weaken him by locking away his Alicorn manic before using the elements of harmony to steal him away.

Sombra can use alicorn magic but so could Twilight when Celestia taught it to her just before she went to the Crystal Empirte (which was before she ascended) so Sombra being an alicorn doesn't hold much water.

My own theory is about Hollow Shades, the town where Gideon got to embrace the power of darkness.
It was said that the town was abandonned "eons ago" by his population, all the remaining being the "only dark place in Equestria", and deep underground seems to be a Sanctuary, or a Temple to the glory of a dark-Alicorn-like figures.
We can think that this figure is just a representation of the Darkness, but I think the Alicorn amulet was an artefact of an ancient alicorn.

This supposed Alicorn had embrace the true magic that embodied his or her race, the dark kind that was shown before. When Twilight use dark magic to activate the memory potion it was when Zecora asked to use "Alicorn magic" implying that dark magic is "inherent" to alicorn in some form (which explain why they can have a dark form like Nightmoon and Daybreaker).


It leads to two outcome for the amulet for me :
- It is called the Alicorn Amulet only because it contain the raw power of Alicorn, dark magic which corrupt mind, control others and therefore embody the vision of the nature of an Alicorn, evil, selfish and powerhungry.
- It really contained some amount of power directly taken (or given) by an Alicorn but which one ?

For me, it's not Sombra, it's the Darkness itself who once was an Alicorn, but for some reason was "reduced" to a shadow of its former glory.
When Twilight or even Cadance lose their magic, they didn't became back unicorn and pegasus, they just lose their power but their nature still exist, Cozy Glow was an alicorn only because the pony race way to deal with an incredible amount of power in them is to "evolve to Alicorn".

But if an artefact is called "The Alicorn Amulet", it clearly implies that it belong to something or somepony who once was really an Alicorn, because it would imply that if it belonged to Sombra, it's power wasn't his at the first place and still put a lot of questions into the origins of the power in it, even if he did used the artefact.
So the theory is...

"Once upon a time, in an isolate town in Equestria, a powerful alicorn existed. But her purpose was tainted, tainted by the dark power within her glorious race.
She created a Temple to her glory and made pony around her followers, offering power to them in exchange of their devotion.
But at some point, one of her follower wanted the Alicorn power for himself, so in secret he created an artefact, an Amulet that would contain the power of this godlike figure.
He give the amulet as a gift, a representation of his devotion, but when she put the amulet on, it was activated... it absorbed all the power that made her what she was, an Alicorn, riping her apart when everything she is ceised to be.

And after that, in an endless scream, the Dark Alicorn was gone... the Amulet didn't just take her power, but her nature, bringing with it not only raw power but also dark intent, selfishness and finaly hatred.
But something cannot just... disappear, the Alicorn was gone, her followers starting to leaving finaly free while even the creator of the Artefact fled, but her shadow was still here... only a deformed image of her seeking only revenge, weak, without a body or a true form... whispering to those alone or betrayed to give them power while regaining more herself, taking their bodies as an host."

I think there is a point, where the analogy between Cozy Glow and ex-alicorn Sombra collapses. Cozy Glow wasn't originally an alicorn and could therefore be "reduced" to being a pegasus again when being freed of Grogar's bell magic. But if Sombra was originall an alicorn and was robbed of his alicorn magic, why should he become a unicorn instead of a pegasus or earth pony [umbrum]?
Of course you could argument that whoever it was didn't take all his magic, but this would be both discriminatory to the other tribes who would, like this, be classified as generally less magical, as well as stupid by anyone who was interested in making sure Sombra wouldn't cause harm anymore.

Ah, the comics, they are always such a strange point of discussion. The comics creators and Hasbro itself has said they are canon until they contradict the show. Meaning that Sombra's entire back story was wiped from the comics. The way they describe it, Sombra turning good is as canon to the comics as it is to the show.

But at the same time, they have shown umbra years later suggesting that the entire species and possibly Sombra being one, is canon. Plus, there is the fact that the comics want to be called canon now that the show ended. I mean, they even named the next batch of comics "season ten" suggesting they are 100% canon now.

I agree because alacorn magic cannot be destroyed ,but transfer to other alacorns to (maybe even) gems. Since gems are very important and have magical abilities like the elements of harmony.

I kinda thought something different about the Alicorn amulet, I thought that it was just a powerful gem but when king sombra's corrupted personality reached the amulet, it made it evil. Just like what happened to grogar, someone, like gusty the great or starswirl, could've taken the amulet from him and he became a normal unicorn again. I think this because when sunset shimmer put twilight's crown on, it made her evil

I like to think it would be harder to remove the wings of the four princesses since i feel like they earned the wings and Clozy just stole it so it would be a easier to un-alicorn her.

I thinkthe reason the amulet corrupted her is based off Trixie's ego. She thinks she so perfect it gets to her head and she comes corrupted. but the sombra idea is interesting.

I enjoyed watching this video, and I don't mean to kinda ruin it in any way...but wasn't confirmed in the comics that Sombra isn't a "pony", but rather a creature in disguise? So wouldn't it be technically impossible for him to be an actual alicorn since he isn't even a pony?

Maybe, what if some ponies like, Twilight Sparkles or Rainbow Dash's great great great grandparents(Born when Celstia and Luna were) what if their great great great grandparents were alicorns? But ex alicorns. Maybe, they became ex alicorns and started unicorns, earth ponies, and pegisi? So maybe all ponies have alicorn magic in them, they just don't use it like Twilight did, use like a alicorn? How do earth ponies have magic? ALICORN GREAT GREAT GREAT GRANDPARENTS! Maybe some ponies, the alicorn magic comes out and they become a alicorn, maybe even the alicorn magic guiding the pony to become a alicorn not Celstia? So, what if the ALICORN MAGIC chooses which pony becomes a alicorn? Thats probably why not all ponies are alicorns, the alicorn magic chooses the pony that's most suited!

Another unrelated theory I just came up with:
What if Twilight is the reincarnation of clover the clever? Like how the pegasi, earth ponies and the unicorns never got along, the leaders and the servants that brought them together got reincarnated as the 6 best friends destined to be the very saviors of equestria?

Ah the Alicorn Amulet, one of the most powerful and one of my personal favorite magical artifacts in the mlp series, i've always thought that it's too bad that the amulet's powers were meant for evil i mean just imagine the kinds of good such untold power could be used for, but it's a good thing the Mane 6 managed to hide it again..ponies like Trixie don't deserve such power.

I think my theory is

Alicorn amulet, is basically an amulet used to zap away any unicorn who discovered the power to ascend into alicornhood. Which with that power drove them into become full of themselves with power and which lead to bad magic and cause chaos before the friendship of magic was born Celestia would have a high ranked unicorn with the special ability in making enchanting jewelry which gave her the amulet to represent bad alicorn magic, or alicorn in general. She would use it to take away the bad alicorn's magic and revert them back to a unicorn which results it being stored away but later was stolen and sold. But whomever wears it was able to use the past alicorn magic created in it. Which is why Trixie was so more evil it boosted her to go for revenge to the point it made her believe she deserved a lot more then praise

But... When Celestia, Luna and Cadence had all their magic transferred to Twilight... How come THEY didn't un-become alicorns?

Sombra may have made the amulet to boost his powers. When he died, possibly killed by luna, his amulet became an artifact. An evil artifact that possesses the wearer. Maybe Sombra is the one who hates wheels. Trixie has wheels on her wagon so she doesn't normally act that way.

I always felt Sombra was alicornish. But this is an amazing theory.

I think there's still a little more to it. Your collab with Canned Cream on the Elements of Disharmony years ago really stuck with me and I think over the course of the series, we encountered three other magical artifacts (or at least the magic that once powered them): the Inspiration Manifestation spell book, Stygian's Shadow, and Juniper Montage's Mirror from EQG. Each of these had similar properties and effects on their wielder. They all created a bond with their user to the point where just separating them from the artifact was either not enough to neutralize the threat (Juniper's Mirror, Rarity's book) or separating them from the artifact wasn't possible by conventional means (Trixie had to voluntarily remove the Alicorn Amulet, Stygian had to be pulled away from the Shadow by the combined magic of the Elements of Harmony). Additionally, these "Elements of Disharmony" all seemed to actively seek out a host. The Alicorn Amulet and the Shadow were both said to "call out" to the ponies who would eventually use them, and the magic that possessed Juniper's mirror may have seemed to just be a random occurrence but there's no way to guarantee that it was. Lastly, all four "elements" had the same addictive and corrupting effects on their users. Trixie, Juniper, Stygian, and Rarity each became drunk on the power granted to them and became serious threats to others as well as themselves.

All of that together makes me think there's something in common with these four artifacts, whether they're "Elements of Disharmony" or not.
I definitely think it's something worth thinking about.

Sombra isnt an ex-Alicorn. There is a Comoc,where Sombras backstory is shown: He was an Unicorn born in the Crystal Empire and became sick every year by the event of tje Crystal Heart. He finds out,that dark magic is inside him and uses this to take over the Empire.

problem with this is at what point could sombra have been an alicorn, we already saw his colt years so its hard to find a place where this fits

I know this is unrelated but in one of Cantersoft’s video she explained about Luna’s black marking on her cutie mark, I wanted to add on that and in the video he told that Luna’s real cutie mark is the white moon and not the black marking, but when starlight changed each other cutie marks the black marking has also been gone, so in her video he told the dark mark might be from the shadow pony which makes sense but what if that black marking filled with darkness led to Celestial becoming Daybreaker.........just a theory I thought of 😉

I think the amulet is like the Ring of lord of the Ring it mich gave the Person who wear it Mode magic Power but of sombra became it back he would be get back his wings because he stored the magic to be a alicorn in the amulet. I think it is a reverce.

If you read the comics the likely thing would be Sombra's mom, his mom appears to be trapped in some sort of crystal form which looks just like the chrystal on the amulet. The amulet might even be her trapped magical powers and the alicorn could be her true form!

Now could we get the Sombra reformation thing according to this universe's canon. (Yes there is already a Comic version but I'd like to see how would it be possible in the original timeline)

Long ago, even before Equestria was founded, there was a kingdom, ruled by an alicorn princess, an earth pony prince gave her a love potion that turned to be a love poison, they couldn't perform their royal duties and the kingdom fall into chaos
Celestia and Luna lived on this kingdom with their alicorn parents, who died in this chaos.
Equestria was founded. One day princess Celstia helped the unicorns raising the sun.
Star Swirl saw her potential, so he took both sisters and trained them to became the new rulers of Equestria. He created a dimension where ponies with the potential to became alicorns are transported and transformed into alicorns.
He studied alicorns and created a spell to transform ponies into alicorns, giving the magic from the 3 types of ponies to the ponies that are meant to rule.
The pilars go to limbo, and Nightmare moon is banished to the moon.
Cadence is transported to the magical dimension and is turned into an alicorn, Celestia takes her to Canterlot.
The same happened to Twilight.
Shining armor and Cadence have a child Flurry Heart, her desteny was to rule the Crystal Empire, and has alicorn magic from her mother so she is born alicorn.
What do you think of the theory?

Look, Star Swirl could have made Sombra an Alicorn to protect the land as he was getting old, also along side the princesses, as Sombra must not be strong enough to raise the sun nor the moon...
Then, Star Swirl realized that Sombra was using his powers for evil and slaving ponies...

As the time moved on, The princess Defeated Sombra, and he got slaved..
But when NightMare Moon came to power, she destroyed the Castle of the 2 Sisters, the Alicorn Amulet's Place......
Then When Celestia banished Night Mare Moon, she told one of her trusty pony, to keep it safe in his shop( like when Trickcy Found the Amulet). She told him not to give it to anyone and keep it hidden
She knew very less people would come to his shop as his shop must be where no pony goes much......

If Sombra didn't make the amulet, I have a theory about its possible origins and it will involve Flurry Heart a tiny bit too.

You see, after the debut episode of Flurry Heart, many fans even now are debating if Celestia and Luna are natural born Alicorn's or not. It would make sense that Luna wouldn't know about how Alicorn's are born, but not really for Celestia unless they are very close in age and had been very young during whatever event caused for the other Alicorn's to vanish. And I believe they both where still fillies when the Pillars had been around which might have been mentioned in both the comics & in the show.

So the amulet could have belonged to a random Alicorn and either the Alicorn was evil or got corrupted somehow like the amulet was once a plain amulet until a spell was misused & caused the original owner to turn evil. Though has anyone thought that the Alicorn Amulet is a bit like an Element of Disharmony?

Alicorndom is granted to someone who achieved access to all 3 of the core tribes. Trixie being a unicorn, probably only would think of the unicorn powers, But I would imagine whoever wore that amulet would also find their strength and endurance increased too. I wonder if they would at least gain the cloud walking and weather manipulation as well (if they don't have wings, probably couldn't straight out fly).

In the shorts of Celestia's magic school, talking about how magic works, we learn that Equestrian magic is very intent and emotion-driven. It is likely that Whoever made that, got the power of a Unicorn, pegasus, and earth pony into one artifact and being a spiteful being, that intent traveled into it.

Or it was the other way around. Sombra did not make the amulet, it was the one that gave him his power. Maybe the amulet not only corrupts the pony from the inside but also on the outside through continuous exposure. If Trixie were to keep wearing the amulet her body would turn dark. Her magical aura and pupils were already turning red like Sombra's

I have a theory. In the episode that starlight is friends with trixie, Trixie says “ soul sucking amulet” I think that when sombra’s soul is pure alicorn magic and the alicorn amulet took some of that power when sombra took it off.

Then why did sombra only lose his wings and not horn?

I HAVE A QUEEN CHRYSALIS THEORY

So, In the Canterlot Wedding, Queen Chrysalis perfectly copies Cadence while in the later seasons she can transform but she shares her voice with her voice when she isn't transformed, In other words the more love Queen Chrysalis has taken, the more powerful she becomes and ponies are unable to tell the difference with Queen Chrysalis and the creature she copied (besides the green horn glow)

I think that zombra was already a corrupted unicorn, for me i think he tried to make himself more powerful and the cost of that was his wings, maybe he gave up his wings for magic unicorn power.

It could also be that zombra was no one, and just studied magic or something and somone offered him the amulet that gave him power and also made him curropted.

there is one big problem, he was never a real pony,he is/was an Umbrum (cannon from the IDW-comics), and in the comics there was never a hint that he was an alicorn (or something like that).

my theory, the amulet was created (maybe by sobra or an other magic using and power hungry indviduum [or other umbrum].) just to amplyfy power, but where light is, there is shadow -> corruption.

Does anyone know of videos theorizing/explaining why Sombra looks the way he does?

I believe sombra (ex KING of the crystal empire) was either A: transformed into an alicorn just like cadence, by celestia to signify his royalty, and he later became evil and prideful of the power, causing celestia and luna to take his power away (via amulet) when he was banished. or B: he like celestia/ luna was "born" or "came to this world" as an alicorn to rule but ended with the same fate ^ (or at least thats my theory, but I think sombra was an alicorn, born or or not)

There is only one problem I have with this theory.

This is taking into consideration that the comics are kind of canon. There is a comic called My Little Pony Volume 3 in a part of the comic book called SIEGE OF THE CRYSTAL EMPIRE. In this comic, it goes into Sombra's backstory before he became King Sombra and his childhood.

The story goes that Sombra was conceived my demonic creatures called the Umbrum. He was a pony conceived of their magic and was supposedly destined to take over the Crystal Empire and free the Umbrum so that they may take Equestria for themselves. Of course, after he killed the first Princess of the Crystal Empire and took over for a small period of time, the Two Sisters along with the Crystal Heart banished him to the icy depths beyond.

But Sombra, as a foal, had a friend named Radiant Hope and even developed feelings for her. Radiant Hope was one of Celestia's pupils to become the next Alicorn Princess. Possibly before Sunset Shimmer and Twilight Sparkle.

One day, foal Sombra and Radiant Hope (also a foal) went to visit the original Crystal Heart at the Crystal Fair. Radiant Hope saw that she has the possibility to become a princess, but Sombra saw his future as the King of Darkness. This vision set Sombra down a path that he foresaw and believed to be unavoidable. As he grew up, he began to grow sick everyday on the Crystal Fair and this is implied to be him transforming ever so slightly into his destined form created by the Umbrum. Eventually, he does so and the inner darkness breaks loose, as he attacks the Crystal Empire which imprisons the Umbrum. If he can destroy or even manipulate the power of the Empire, then the Umbrum's crystal prison can be undone. But he was defeated. It is even explained that Radiant Hope is the one who informed the Two Sisters of Sombra's takeover.

Truth be told, he was never an Alicorn and in his past there is no mention of an Alicorn Amulet. Sombra's backstory kind of reminds me of Darth Vader in a way, but that's another story.

This comic also goes into how Sombra can always come back in someway shape or form. If ANY PART OF HIM is left to fester for long enough, he can come back from that one piece.

There is only one issue that this comic creates with MLP's plot. The fact that Sombra becomes reformed and un-corrupted, thanks to Twilight Sparkle and Radiant Hope, and how him and Radiant Hope run off as two lovers. But in season 9 of MLP (the show) we see that Sombra comes back in his all evil form. My explanation for that is that Grogar (or Discord) brought back the DARKNESS of Sombra. When Sombra was reformed, that darkness created by the Umbrum must have gone somewhere. It cannot just disappear. So it was always my belief that Discord just brought back the darkness of Sombra and not the pony himself. That would explain the change of character since we last saw him in the show before Season 9.

But that's a theory for another day. The point is: if this comic is to be taken as CANON, and this shows Sombra's past, then he has nothing to do with the Alicorn amulet. I'm not sure where that leaves this now, but this is just a theory, right? A theory is meant to have evidence to back it up, it is meant to be criticised and built upon, but most importantly: it is just an IDEA.

So, please, this is just a theory. AN MLP THEORY!!

One problem: Trixie didn’t become an Alicorn when she wore the amulet.

Not to rain on your parade, but if losing magic "un-alicorns" an alicorn, then why are Twilight, Celestia, Luna, and Cadence all still alicorns when tirek sucks out so much magic from them that they lose their cutie marks?

To be honest, it was clear that Cozy Glow becoming an alicorn was an unnatural transformation, and insane amounts of magic doesn't just make you an alicorn (look at Pinkie when she gets Discord powers). I would say that Cozy's alicorn form was something of her own design, that she willed it to be because she perceives alicorns as powerful, and it is unrelated to the alicorn amulet in any way.

I really love to think that Sombra ruled Crystal Empire with love many years ago

Cozy Glow wasn't a true alicorn, she gained alicorn-like powers when she stole magic using the Bewitching Bell, but a she didn't truly ascend

Sambra loosing his Alicorn magic might be the reason he went evil. Honestly this makes so much more sense now it gives Sambra a back story worth listening to.

Okay... then why did Trixie not become an alicorn?
The pony(ies) that went up against Sombra matter less than HOW he was defeated. Remember the ONLY way to remove the alicorn amulet is to trick the wearer into removing it voluntarily. As stupid as Sombra was portrayed in the S9 opener, I still do not believe that he would have fallen for the same trick Trixie did.
Also, Cozy Glow was a false alicorn, given an artificial boost of magic by an enchanted object which had stolen magic from other ponies, as well as Discord. She did not ascend, so as soon as she is defeated, there goes all those artificial powers. Remember, when Twilight, Cadance, Cakebutt, and Luna all gave up their powers, they were still alicorns.

I don’t think Sombra was ever an alicorn. If anything I think the gem itself was created by his horn (it looks chipped to me). He was a corrupted and used it under his armor so no one could steal it. I believe the amulet got its name because Sombra, just like every ruler of a pony country/kingdom/place has an alicorn ruler.

You might be onto something with the way the amulet looks. But I have a different theory about why it corrupts to user. It’s be they don’t truly understand the kind of magic they are using. That’s why the one using the amulet gets corrupted while the Alicorns can handle the magic power. The sisters understand the importance of night and day. Candice understands love. And Twilight understands friendship. But Trixie. She did not, I repeat NOT, understand the magic she was use, the spells she was casting. And because she did not understand it, the power corrupted her.

Alicorn Amulet could have be created by King Sombra to make himself into a alicorn and my theory is when Trixie wear the amulet, it only give her a boost of power and energy, the answer to that is only sombra is the only pony who can do that.

My idea is that he stole it from the original crystal heart. This is why the people were so weak and why he was able to become an alicorn. He had magic from all kinds of ponies and forced himself to be king. This is why he was so strong even without his wings. He was still taping into that power until the heart was able to reconnect with someone else- Cadance...

a lot of times in the show they reference earth ponies have magic try to find them. one of them is in trek's first appearance where he says that earth ponies have strength so baking and farming and stuff is what eath ponies are good at. and maud says whats an allicorn with no wings or horn and she says an earth pony and says that they have the power of walking and picking stuff up with their teeth and pinkie says its funny cause its true.

Good theorie but Lauren Faust once stated that there are no male Alicorns... Of course she left the show before sombra come in but still... I consider her book as the real canon which also stated that Alicorns are a whole different race from another world (planet).

Edit: Also the fact that sombra is an Umbrum and not even a crystal pony Wich also indicates that he can't be an Alicorn only if he was like Twilight and done something good before turned into power hungry maniac but I doubt so.

I love your theory, but I think there is a problem to it. There is this comic series that part of it is dedicated to the origins of MLP’s villains like Queen Chrysalis and even Sombra. However, I am not sure if any of what the comics say is cannon and I don’t think it is, but you should look into it. I am sure it will help you on your theories in one way or another.

Maybe Celestial had a mission that required two alicorns while luna was in the moon.

As I was watching the city I remembered some thing, A couple years ago me and my friend were talking about MLP and I brought up as a joke, “Wouldn’t it be funny if Somdra was secretly an alicorn!?!” I said that as a joke, but it’s still funny that I kind of theorized it.

Well, in the show canonically speaking it states that only a Female can become an Alicorn I mean we see big mac become one but that it only in a dream and it also stated in the books that sombra was only ever a unicorn that he was never an Alicorn.

But we do have Alicorn princesses, Celestia , Luna and Cadence then take into account that Queen Chrysalis looks like an Alicorn as well.

It's not a gar reaching theory that maybe one of the other princess's had a student who got too carried away we've seen it with sunset Shimmer and we know that Celestia sent twilight to ponyvle in order to prevent twilight from becoming a second Sunset, so who's to say that she didn't have some one prior to sunset as a student?

Or maybe it wasn't Celestia's student but rather Princess Luna's or Princess Cadence's student ?

The Alicorn Amulet might have just been a random magical artifact like the memory stone or the geode's from equstaria girls so there's that to take into account as well.


When it comes to magical artifacts that are made the princess 's seem to know an awfully lot about them and keep them under tight wraps , however when it comes to random magical artifacts again like the memory stone they know very little about them .


For a we know the gem in the Amulet might have been just a random magical gemstone of some kind that some pony found by accident like how maude found that rare emerald jasper rock we don't see her pick it up or what it could do if it were a magical stone but it definitely looked like something that MAY contain Magic.

I mean ,who here thought "hey a magic rock" or "hey that looks like it could be pretty cool if it has magical abilities to it"?

I don’t feel like Sombra would be an ex Alacorn but I feel like one of his ancestors is an alacorn that’s why it looks like an alacorn and the reason it has so much magic is because all of the males in his family put all of their magic in.

I don't think the alicorn amulet sucked Sombra's magic out of him. I think he put a part of his own magic into it. Maybe as much as half. Probably not half, in fact probably significantly less than half, but enough to cross back over the threshold of power that he originally crossed to become an alicorn. As for why? It could have been any of a number of reasons. Sombra's biggest trait as a formidable villain is his careful planning. Remember that while Sombra was the villain of the season 3 premiere, the most formidable part of him as a villain then was the work he did to keep the crystal heart away from the crystal ponies before the empire was lost. He's proven himself to be a meticulous and careful strategist. Maybe it was to be a reserve of power for him to seek out later in the event something happened to endanger his conquest? Maybe he wanted to reverse his transformation so he wouldn't stand out in the event he ever had to flee from opposition to his conquest? Maybe both? Still, it's clear he had no idea where it was after the empire returned. Or perhaps he just didn't have a chance to look for it at first, and when Discord brought him back he took a few memories from him to keep him from seeking out his reserve of power.

Im pretty sure celestia and luna had a battle with sombra a milenia ago and managed to beat him, maybe they were the ones to get rid of his magic and with it, his wings.

I think Cadence was his replacement and the purple on the ends of her wings mean Celestia can take them away as soon as she thinks of it.

Wasn't sure if it was possible for males to become Alicorns, have no idea where that thought came into my mind. :/

Something doesn't add up. He said that Cozy Glow unbecame a Alicorn when she lost the power but what about Celestia and Luna? When they lost their magic they didn't lose their wings.

I was rewatching the show for funny's sake, and I realized something. In Princess Twilight Sparkle Part 1, Zecora gives Twilight the potion that "only responds to Alicorn magic." But, when Twilight uses a spell on it, she uses King Sombra's signature dark magic, and the potion activated. HMMMM?? 👀

He may be ashamed about losing his wings which may explain why he wears a cape but what about his blank flank ? And who made the amulet to give or take alicorn ability and form we’ve seen it over and over every pony needs a talent and that talent effects magic to a certain degree I would imagine but Sombra has a blank flank could this amulet have taken his cutie mark as well ? And how did sombra come in ties to becoming a alicorn ? As you have said to become a alicorn you would need a piece of all the elements to become one. If sombra could become a alicorn then that would make sense why he is still alive he may not be as old as the sisters but they have given us enough to know he ain’t a young chicken but wouldn’t this be taken along with the alicorn status ? Or could our dear sombra still have the heart or ability to gain his wings once more the question is how would someone simply have to break the amulet and would the magic that made him a alicorn come back to him or would something bigger need to happen to cause this ? I may have over thought this-

I have a theory i think that there could still be natural and artificial alicorns but a bit different the natural alicorns are Celestia,Luna,Cadence,Twilight and the artificial one is Cozy (not including flurry heart because i dont know where to put her in) the theory about natural and artificial goes like this we all noticed the purple magic that transformed twilight into a alicorn so we can assume that is what happened with cadence celestia and luna so that magic that transformed them was natural magic one that ponies cant control but have deep within and surfaces if they are worthy to become a alicorn the natural magic has magic from all three tribes the artificial is the absorbing of magic from all three tribes it basically means that for artificial they didnt have the natural magic from within happen but instead abosorbed it from others

And He wore The Alicorn Amulet in a good way but one day Sombra became jealous of Equestria and tried to Take Over Equestria but He Used The Ponies in The Crystal Empire and He failed but before The Story That we have from Season 3 Episode 1 when The Ponies Realized that they were controlled by Sombra something like The Crystaling Happened The Dark and Hate or maybe The Darkness and Hatred That The Crystal Empire (The All 3 Trives) and Celestia and Luna Had for Sombra made Sombra Unbecome an Alicorn and Then The Story That we have from Season 3 Episode 1 happened.

It would be cool if Hasbro realesed a Princess Celestia, Princess Luna or even Princess cadance backstory, or a movie, it’d also be cool if they do it with the story of Flurry Heart and what she does, to be honest I really want to know what Flurry will do.

Maybe the alicorn amulet only corrupts one, and that Sombra is the one that wore the amulet for the longest time, thus the magic in the amulet became his magic as well.

Maybe an ancient unknown alicorn gave that to sombra, or smthn.

Because, everything about sombra is weird. he has flowy mane, has a bent and nonspiraled horn, and has magic like none other.

Maybe, if worn long enough, the alicorn amulet can turn one into something of sombra’s capacity, and the reason why he’s been going for the crystal heart is either him wanting another source of power as he does not know where the alicorn amulet currently is, or, somehow, the crystal heart can cleanse him from that power.

I think he was an ruler like an alicorn that got evil somehow by the amulet. Just like it did with tricky (I do t know how to spell hr name) but for him it took away his wings. I don’t know just a thought

What I think happened is that when the war over the Crystal Empire took place Sombra realized he might not win, so he put his alicorn magic into a pendant hoping that if he did win or if he escaped punishment, his alicorn-ness would still be waiting for him.

The only issue i have with this theory is like.... Sombras entire backstory. He was never an alicorn, at least, not originally. Sure, maybe at some point during his rule he may have gotten enough power to become one, and then lost it like how this theory suggests, but oddly enough it isn't that long from the point where Sombra overthrows the queen of the Crystal empire (i forget her name) and his eventual defeat by the sisters. like, maaaaaybe a year if i remember right? either way he didn't manage to build up an army enough to take on the sisters in round one by the time they managed to get to him. So it couldn't have been that long after he took power that he was defeated.
that pretty much my only gripe, otherwise yeah i could see it being connected to Sombra somehow.

What about the Pony of Shadows, even though the body it takes over can be any pony species, the shadow itself has an Alicorn appearance.

There is just 1 one BIG issue with this. the MLP comics. in one comic, it covers all of sombra's history including what he is. the comic says he is a Umbrum. in the end, a pony called Rardient Hope helps him see the magic of friendship, and he becomes a normal pony. I have a theory too. In S3E1, Celestia shows a vision of the early crystal empire to twilight. If you look closely, you will see what looks like apple bloom as a crystal pony with a maple leaf cutie mark, bow and all! I didn't imagine this bc I rewound it and saw it again, since we never saw AJ's Grandma on her mother's side, I think this was her! I hope you give some thought to this or at least watch it and see for yourself.

Trixie with the amulet: I’ve won…but at what cost?

I thought the amulet was owned the pony of shadows. Why? cause what if the amulet can turn you into the pony of shadows but wasn't possible with Trixie cause the pony of shadows has been imprisoned which will not be able to activate enough power to transform, cause the form of magic has been imprisoned, but bits of its powerful magic is able to be used. because the full magic has to be in that world to activated it. BUT the pony of shadows has been sent to another world so maybe that's why is cant reach its full power.

I have a theory about Grogar, here it is;
We don’t know much about Gusty The Great but whoever she may be she definitely has a connection to Grogar.
I’m pretty sure that they were in the same timeline and there was an epic battle with her and Grogar. Because in Season 7 Episode “A Flurry of Emotions” Twilight was reading a book to little fillies about Gusty The Great and her fight with Grogar that book may be true you might be asking “If that book was true why would Twilight read that that book to little fillies? and since Grogar and Gusty are from soooooo long ago that book may be passed down as a “Mare’s Tale” like The Nightmare Moon, The Sonic Rainboom
And Gusty just like Star Swirl might have Sent Grogar and Herself to someplace like Limbo where time doesn’t pass A Thousand Years or maybe even over A Thousand Years
Since Limbo is another dimension outside of Equestria when Cozy Glow Nearly Drained All The Magic In Equestria Gust and Grogar couldn’t Escape perhaps they may still be trapped in someplace like Limbo
And maybe to bring them back we may need The Magical Artifacts for Grogar this may be Grogar’s Bell and for Gusty perhaps a Magic Wand or something?
And perhaps when Discord pretended to be Grogar he might have been trying to bring Grogar back with Grogar’s Bell and perhaps was gonna ask Chrysalis, Tirek and Cozy Glow to find and bring Gusty’s Wand but when they lied and said that they didn’t find The Bell he might have gave up on that idea

I got a question to put in your brain, why is it that Tirek is clearly able to handle draining discord's magic in Twilight's Kingdom, but states in The Ending of the End that no other creature can control discord's magic and that taking all of it would be madness? Does this mean he didn't take all of Discord's chaos magic in Twilight's Kingdom or is something else going on?

I believe he was alicorn at some point. He did rule the crystal empire and most rulers are alicorns. Or have great magic to match an alicorns

Also when cozy glow stole everyone's magic the magical creatures in the prison lost their magical powers and the physical changes that came with it; but the princesses stayed alicorns, just magic with magic

This is a wonderful theory don't get me wrong but there's something wrong with it.How did sombra become an alicorn. Your only an alicorn when you achieve a great thing cozy glow stole magic on the other hoof, but sombra must have made the amulet for separate reasons and then when the amulet gained enough power from sombra then only must have the alicorn Magic been sucked out of him.Also I think that sombra was good at one point but amulet that made him evil because when you think of it he has no reasons to become evil but that's for you to explain not me.

I honestly don't think he was an alicorn. Even if Cozy glow was turned & reverted, that doesn't mean much. Remember THREE alicorns, Celestia, Luna & Cadence all GAVE UP their magic, they had 0 magic, none, nada, yet they still retained all their alicorn features- and that's THREE alicorns. I don't think Cozy's one off due to grogars bell really lines up with this theory as comfortably as it should. While it's certainly interesting- it still begs the question, why didn't the three rulers lose any traits when they gave up all their respective powers to all allegiences?

Man if only we could get a pg or even pg-13 reboot of the series that delves into the more darker and complex lore of MLP

Sombras hypnotize magic does look very similar to flutter shy magic when she controls I was the bats in the episode where she turned into a bath Pony, so sombra might've lost Earth Pony powers but captors unicorn and Pegasus powers?

There is one issue with this theory which would make it wrong and that is the fact that there are no make alicorns that appeared in the story. If we are assuming that sombra did become an alicorns then who made him into it. It seems that alicorns are either born or created by magic. If the amulet came from a alicorn, there might've been male alicorns that that have powers that might be over something like the desire to have no friends. And even an male alicorn that can cause nightmares in ponies which might've possessed luna. It is odd that there are no make alicorns but there are female alicorns. Which could imply that the amulet that trixie used was created when there were male alicorns. Then again the freindship map could disprove my theory given the fact that it is possible that it might not cover the whole planet that equestria is located on unless it is a flying saucer that it's on.

I don't know if this gives anything to that theory. Just food for thought.

In mythology, alicorn is the material that unicorn horns are made of. Through this lens, the writers were implying that the amulet was made of a unicorn’s horn.

Ok, I like this theory a lot, but I think that because basically no pony really knows how to become an alicorn, maybe they thought that they just needed unicorn magic. That's why Trixie didn't become an alicorn when she wore the necklace but had the UNICORN powers equivalent to alicorns. The reason I say unicorn is because alicorns see their horns for magic, and so did Trixie, but alicorns have earth pony and pegasi magic, too, Trixie wasn't able to get that type of magic because she wasn't an earth pony or a pegasus. I think that the Alicorn Amulet only allows access to the type of magic a pony has. If we were to take Rainbow Dash and give her the Alicorn Amulet, she would have direct access to the pegasus magic in the amulet, not the earth pony or the unicorn, so she would be really fast or something. If Apple Jack took the Alicorn Amulet, she would have direct access to the earth pony magic, but not the pegasus or the unicorn. And if Twilight had it, she would have access to unicorn magic, if she was still a unicorn, but if she were an alicorn and put on the amulet, then she would get all three magic because she already has an amount of it, the Alicorn Amulet just amplifies it. So basically, what I came up with is that the Alicorn Amulet amplifies your magic with the exchange of corruption. Now here is where Sombra comes in. We don't know anything about his past so it could be anything, but I think that he might've made the Alicorn Amulet to amplify one's magic in all areas to make him an alicorn, but instead, the magic corrupted him keeping him a unicorn but giving him extraordinary powers. That's why the Alicorn Amulet is probably called Alicorn Amulet. I might be completely wrong, which is usually the case, but I think that it could be a solid-ish theory.

My idea is that he like to tinker around and make things (it would make sense as to how he made those mind control helmets.) I have a theory one why the Alicorn Amulet is all dark and foreboding and why Trixie was getting corrupted by it.
So it was said that a Alicorn has to be like earned with some unimaginable task. And it was like this up until Flurry Heart UP UNTIL Flurry Heart which means that
Celestia Luna and Cadence and as we know Twilight completed some imaginable task and each have a title or "role"
Celestia and Luna are the Sun and Moon
Cadence Love and Twilight Friendship. And i want to think about how Twilight became an Alicorn in my opoion it was both Friendship and Magic. Because she needed Friendship to complete Star Swirls spell and the Magic part is obivious. But my theory is that when a pony becomes an Alicorn they also get dark magic too as shown by Celestia but I have a feeling when an Alicorn does something that has to do with there role and are selfish to an extreme thats when the dark magic is seen.
Evidence: Nightmare Moon, Midnight Sparkle, and Daybreaker now I know Midnight Sparkle was human but its possible that Midnight Sparkle is Twilights Evil side or her Nightmare Moon/Daybreaker. The appearance does fit a dark Alicorn like Nightmare Moon.
And think about each of the Dark Alicorn's Motives. It had something to do with there title and probablly how they became Princess. Daybreaker: Eternal Day/Nightmare Moon: Eternal Night/Midnight Sparkle: Magic.
Plus I have more proof that Midnight Sparkle is Twilight's evil form in the pony world. And we know eyes repersent magic in the series because every time Tirek drained a pony even earth and chrystilis there eyes became faded and glassy.
