DVD read sensor blew up (actual black mark inside the transparent chip), while I was playing a movie, completely frozen. Even hardware reboot didn't fix it, hard to physically remove the DVD drive, due to this being the era of IDE master/slave devices.

Windows will not add more drives to letters (C-Z, A, B) but they can be accessible by mounting it to directories using devmgmt.msc . Linux should do what you've written
