Maybe "Bats!" wasn't so bad.

I honestly thought the whole episode was about how nature created different species for a reason. Like Fluttershy said, The bats spit out the seeds and only drank their juice. This acts as a way to spread the seeds and to feed the seeds nutrients they need. The apple's skin decomposes and burries the seeds, and let it grow, and the spit the bats use also help. I feel like that is more of a second moral to the story, and the the geneticly modified fruit is more of a third one.

Am I the only one who actually likes the episode. I've heard alot of people say that they don't like it. Maybe it's because I was too focused on the plot of the story and not the characters.

I think the moral was far more general. That nature and technology can work together and they don't have to go against each other. It seems to mirror our situation with flying foxes here in Australia, and probably similar situations with animals supposedly getting in the way of technology in other places. If we learn to work with nature, not against it, we will achieve far more.

Must admit, I was quite shocked from this episode. I don't know if anyone else spotted this but I got some racist and prejudice vibes from the episode. Think about it. Bats invade an apple orchid for food. Instantly, all but one of the main six prejudge the bats to be parasitic vermin out to destroy work just because they want to (which they don't- they're bats). The five ponies are disliking the bats for what they are and turning against anyone (Fluttershy) who supports the bats. I don't know about anyone else but that just screams racism at me.
P.S. I heard a fact (not sure if true) that, in 1940's America, averagely one in six white Americans were considered not to be racist. Coincidence?    

Does anyone else think that if the ponies just killed the bats with a lazer beam or something it would be over quicker? for the bats that is. Since twilight wanted to starve the bats to death instead of relocating them, or something. But no they wanted the bats to suffer for trying to live along side with the ponies.All because AJ didn't want to give up a few trees...

At the end of stop the bats the mane six are not not talking in aggressive voices and they don't have angry expressions. The whole song was Flutter Shy over reacting over the mane six explaining how stopping the bats might not be so bad. In reality the mane six were probably talking in normal voices. I fact, the only reason there was that song in the first place is so that we didn't have to listen to the mane six discuss bats for hours on end. Also this was my favorite song in mlp.

In the song 3 ponies where in character applejack (because her entire life was being ruin.) wait no scratch that they ALL where in character, the main six all saw how Applejack's life was being ruined. Only Fluttershy was looking at the bats perspective. Makes sense why they would support AJ instead of Flutters in this situation.

I loved Bats!!! Also, I loved Flutterbat. LOVED IT. It was awesome, the design was awesome, it brought up AMAZING designs for the other characters as Bat ponies! Also, the only one I thought off was Pinkie. I mean, I might be able to understand the others taking AJ's side, but Pinkie? Really? Well, actually, to be honest, I think a few might have been off ... Like, in Green Isn't Your Colour, we see Rarity has a close relationship with Fluttershy. Wouldn't she take her side? But, I think the rest were fine. Twilight's being logical (Ughhh), Rainbow's being headstrong, not to mention, thinking about her cider ... Anyway, and AJ was staying loyal (Ummmmm ...) to her family and, let's say, business. Though she's being a bit harsh on Flutters, she's just doing what's good for her trees and such. She's heard about what happened last time the bats came, and she's trying to protect her trees, still kinda being stubborn about it, probably because she doesn't want her family and Ponyville to be let down. Therefore, she's ignoring Fluttershy because of her fear. 

Or, like Ink Rose mentioned, the reason the apple is huge, because there was more Earth Pony magic was going into it...

I realize it's been almost two years since this video was posted, but on the off-chance that you have the time to look back at this, I wanted to present an argument that engages one of your frustrations with the episode: the song.
1) Fluttershy's social anxiety is the reason for the dark tone in the Bats song. It's not reality--it's Fluttershy's perspective. You pointed out that the other five (except Pinkie for that one giggle moment) seem like they're bullying Fluttershy into abandoning her objections to Applejack's insistence that they need to drive the bats away. But as soon as the music is finished, Fluttershy is lying on the ground, covering her head with her hooves and shaking like she does when she's scared. Twilight helps her up and is her normal, considerate self, saying she's sorry but that she has to side with Applejack on this particular issue. The song isn't an accurate portrayal of the reality of the argument the Mane Six are having--it's Fluttershy's perspective, showing how she FEELS about the argument. She just didn't have the personal strength to stand up to her friends yet. Thankfully, she grows through this experience and does have that strength in Filli Vanilli.

@The Brony Notion Okay, seriously, am I the ONLY one who drew parallels between the "Bats!" song and the atrocities committed against the Native Americans... Some of the lyrics sounded like excuses that the Settlers would've used...

I liked the episode Bats! for a few reasons. One would be the design for "Flutterbat". We've only seen bat-like ponies once before, in Luna Eclipsed and it's been revealed by Lauren Faust that the bat ponies we saw during Luna Eclipsed were an actual race of ponies, native to deep caves and other dark places, aswell as serving in Luna's division of the Royal Guard. They just look different from the vampire fruit bat pony that we saw Fluttershy turn into.

Another thing, I've noticed that you mentioned in a later episode that you'd love to see the return of the Changelings with one of the beloved ponies actually being a Changeling in disguise. We've noticd that Changelings have sharp fangs, similar to the fang Fluttershy had at the end of the episode. Maybe it's a hint to the return of the Changelings, or maybe it's just a pointless cliffhanger the writers will just simply forget about.

I like Fluttershy as a bat. It gives more about how Fluttershy does have extra magic...

I'm surprised by your analysis on what is probably the worst episode in all 9 seasons. Also, that you say there's a problem with GMOs. I have only ever heard fear mongering brought on by people saying "There's no telling what that stuff will do to you!". Which cleverly hints at it being bad, whilst actually admitting that "I don't know what the outcome will be". But in all those years since the fearmongering began, nothing has ever been found to link GMOs with any kind of negative problem at all. We are living in an age of overpopulation, and yet starvation is known by few. This sounds like it was a long term solution that panned out well.


And it kinda means your review falls apart... Or means that if this is the message of the episode afterall, then the episode's message falls apart... Which sadly was the case with their first morale too. Everyone was OOC and it was bad. But the end result where Fluttershy makes the wrong decision and encourages a problem (overpopulation) whilst allowing the initial problem (reduced food producton) to continue. A bad combination. She does this whilst supposedly being an animal expert, but if anyone were to point out the problem of her plan, I'd expect it to be Fluttershy. This feels like something Applebloom shoulda been used for, wanting to protect the cute bats. And for Fluttershy to come in and tell her that it's not good for anyone to do that.


Instead Fluttershy has caused the bats to go into a situation where they will begin to starve. The more they eat, the more the breed, the more will die when the farm fails. But dont worry! When the bats die they'll land on the ground and decay and fertalise it and make the trees grow stronger! Yes that's the moral! Disasters are all okay because it always leads to the next generation doing better!.. Which is true but god damn twisted. There is no way to see this episode any other way through, childish, or dark, it was bad with bad morals. Worst episode.

Wow, I never thought of that. I just chalked that huge apple up to Earth pony magic. That's really clever, what the writers did now that I think about it. They did the peer pressure thing for the young audience , while leaving the Man vs Nature moral for the older, more analytical viewers.

That's not a great theory if you ask me. People have been growing prize-winning produce for generations. If AJ had had a field of giant apples, then maybe we could talk.

The biohazard thing reminded me of that "Fallout: Equestria" story. Hopefully such a grim future won't happen, be it in the pony world or the real world. :)
I thought it was kinda too bad that the power ponies episode happened just before the bat one. If Fluttershy's powers had been her bat powers (or at least her attunement to the animals; calling them to come help her save the day and such, kind of like a mix between Pocahantas, Cinderella and Snow White) that would have been cool!

"Bats!" Is one of my favorite episodes. I love everything about it. And if Applejack is using GMO's then how come actual people have grown crops up to that big without using GMO's? This video frankly made no sense to me.

The animation for the mane 5(other then Fluttershy) was just showing how they feel. The animation showed how they are true friends with Applejack. And I know that you and I and a whole bunch of other bronies would feel that way too if your apples or a friends apples were being eaten by a bunch of bats.

Fluttershy's- excuse me- Flutterbat's animation is amazing. Only because that would really happen if someone casted a magic spell on a living thing and it backfired onto something else. So, Flutterbat is a thing. And it has a reason.

Also, not to be rude but why is your pony OC shaped like a female pony?

Actually I very liked that episode, but in some extend, you're right. The moral should rather be, that Applejack should also respect nature and the bats instead of Fluttershy standing up. In my opinion, she stood up enough in that episode.

Generally, I think it would have made more sense if they had made AJ talk about how bad the bats were a bit more before launching into the song. Let her win over Twilight before the song. It would make twilight's participation less jarring.

Bats was probably the best song of the whole season. It was a brilliant duet between Applejack and Fluttershy, because the tone of the music and even the scenery style change when it switches between them.

I like that the episode showed a compromise instead of just straight up vilifying one side or the other. These days a quasi endangered in your particular area species, can shut down an entire farm. That's right, a species of bat that is actually not endangered at all, only rare in a certain area, can have a farm shut down in our society that is already facing a problem with food production without government intervention (yes, I'm sure that's intentional too, but that's beside the point). Can't there be a way to work with farmers instead of just destroying their lively hoods? Like making shelters or helping them reserve small areas for the animals? Would that be such a horrible idea? Hey Peta you gonna give up your homes for a species of rat that probably isn't even in trouble and just doesn't like living in your area? No? Really? I wonder why no one else wants to either.

GMO... You know... Animal husbandry, cross pollination. You don't have to have technology to "tamper with genes" via science to make plants and animals genetically modified. We've been doing it a long, long time. Dogs are the perfect example. We take traits we want and breed it out or in. For example, the English bulldog looked an awful like the American bulldog before it was bred for certain physical attributes.

what if earth ponies have their own magic manifested by in skills. Seeing that every pony possess magic(being they all have cutiemarks that in effect relates to magic abbiltity), but not all posses a horn so in some form, it still must exist and still somehow manifest itself. And in case of Applejack, what if TLC means Tender love and care, means the more potent her power becomes? Like the father, Money Banks(dont know his name, so I will leave it at that), skill is in direct correlation with his magic as he also become wealthy(or atleast mainteined his wealth). What if humans in MLP possess magic, but are not limited in with skill they use to enact that magic. So in other words when they play music, they draw on skill and as such, magic. That must be why using this skill together, they desplay their freingship(being that freindship is magic) magic is also produced. The greater the bond(by quaility or quantity), the greater the magic?

The main method for getting larger fruit is by getting plants that have a larger number of genes, usually being 4n or 6n instead of the usual 2n.  Though uncommon plants with extra copies of genes occur a fair amount in nature and by breeding them against each other you can get any entire crop of such plants.  Genetic engineering is just a way of accelerating the introduction of such traits that do or could occur naturally and don't usually change the plant in any significant way. 

I do think that the song may not have been so much as how the mane 6 actually were reacting to the situation towards the end so much as how how Fluttershy interpreted there wanting to get rid of the bats. I simply saw it personally as an over exaggeration that Fluttershy saw from her own point of view, aside from maybe Apple Jack who clearly wanted them gone. However, I have to agree it's not my favorite song. Mine is still True True Friend and probably always will be!

I love this episode because Fluttershy literally morbs in it.

Exciting. Perhaps, we should be looking much closer at the episodes' meanings, motifs.

See I see the episode on a smaller level. In Australia we see rabbits and kangaroos as pests in regards to farming. We kill them as it is the only way we can save our crops due to most farms being in places that don't get much rain. Either keep the pests alive or keep the crops, plants and therefore cattle alive.

The orange frog mix was a mistake by twilight sparkle if I remember correctly.

But I mean, GMOs can be plants are just bred together to get desirable traits, which humans have been doing for thousands of years. It's how we got any vegetable/grain that's derived from grass, i.e. corn, wheat, broccoli, lettuce, etc. They're all GMOs.

I disagree with what you are saying about GMOs there have been no proven issues caused by GMOs. In fact they have some very good benefits, GMOs can save lives. In countries where children are dying of vitamin deficiency and starvation genetically modified foods can be used to get them the vitamins they need. The only reason people think they are bad is because they don’t understand them. Remember that every thing is natural and made of chemicals that come from nature.

Brainstorm! Here's another episode idea. One day Applejack is walking threw the Ever Free Forest, and she runs into a pack of Timber Wolves. She fights with all her might. One bites her. She feels a sharp pain in her hoof. She quickly flee's back to the farm. The next day her mane has grown a whole lot, her tail to. She had fangs, and her ears where different. She panicked and ran to Twilight's castle. When she gets there her eyes have changed to a blood red color instead of her natural eye color. Twilight examines her and says she is becoming a Timber Pony. Well something like that. She goes to visit Zecora.
That's as far as I have gotten. Feel free to make up a ending. You can make up a fan made episode. Enjoy!!!

THEORY TIME!!! Alright so in the episode, secret of my access, spike gives rarity a gem and then she screams " IT MUST BE AT LEATS 20 CARROTS! "( probably the wrong type of carrots but you get what I mean ) If it were 20 carrots that would mean that a pony is the size of a human Palm, meaning that applejack's prized Apple, is a normal sized Apple in our world and that in the pony world their regular sized apples would be like the size of a 20 carrot gem, if you do not know how big that is, it's like the gem on a wedding ring.

This is why I watch your vids, you think of stuff that would never occur to me.

Okay you're reeeeealy reaching on the GMO thing. I see no reason to see any of that in the episode. I'm also whole-heartedly opposed to synthophobia. It is irrational to assume that if something isn't 'all natural' that it automatically becomes toxic or dangerous, people act like eating GMO foods will mutate us into horrible monsters or give us all cancer or cause horrid birth defects or whatever, when the truth is GMO foods were on the market decades before anyone knew about them. All those people who freak out about GMO and obsess over giving their kids 'organic' everything grew up eating the GMO foods they baselessly assume to be so harmful. What really gets me is the pesticide part of the issue, people ranting about how synthetic pesticides are so dangerous and if we are going to be healthy we have to use only organic ones. You know what was organic? DDT. All the most devastatingly ecocidal pesticides ever used were organic, the synthetic ones were invented specifically because they are SAFER. Here's a little theory I came up with too: There's a big issue in North America with infertility in men happening at a much higher rate than anywhere else. This has been happening over the last decade or so. Synthophobia and the whole 'organic food' movement has been going on in our culture for about the same length of time. You know why organic pesticides like DDT are so damaging? Among other things like softening falcon eggs, they cause infertility in males who consume it. Now this may just be an illusory correlation, but I think it's at least plausible.

I do want to say one thing about the episode- when I was watching it my friend's children were in my house, his 5 year old daughter was watching it with me- and it scared the shit out of her. She was nervous enough during the midnight stakeout, and when Flutterbat appeared she hid behind my chair and whimpered.

I actually thing that GMOs are a good thing. Genetically modifying crops to kill the insects but be harmless to humans seems like a better solution than spraying insecticide on the plant. Also, if the plants are genetically modified to have better and more crops than the normal food, then we would clear less forests for agriculture.
