“The Sounds of Silence” is another top tier S8 episode for me. It amazes me because of the show’s introduction to the mythical Kirin creatures. I really like the lore behind these creatures in this show, they intrigue me, as well as their designs (which are beautiful).
Among the new characters of S8, Autumn Blaze is my second favorite, next to Silverstream. Rachel Bloom did a great performance for her character, her dialogue and delivery is very entertaining. Autumn is strange, but in a good way and I like that about her. And her song is amazing too, one of my top favorite songs of the season. Another fascinating and fun story in my opinion.
I loved the abrupt ending of this episode. Just a hoof clap between AJ and Flutters. ♡ This episode is in my top ten episodes of MLP JUST because of that, literally.
There are many things to like about Autumn but I want to specify on one thing. Despite struggling being alone with what seemed like a hopeless cause, she shines with positivity. I like to think this partly stems from her idea of existence that she explains to Applejack:
>The way the light shimmers off everything, like, like it all suddenly woke up the moment you saw it. And you realize maybe the water and the mountains and the forest and the... yes, the rainbow and the stars and the sky are all looking back at you thinking the same thing? That we are a part of the everything. That maybe there's just one thing and we are all it.<
This could be viewed as some kind of monism, a way of thinking that I love to remind myself of whenever I feel alone in the world. All that exists is one being. Whenever I feel more misunderstood and alone than ever, these thoughts remind me that I don't have to limit my understanding of myself as someone small and insignificant. Instead I can see myself as part of this greater picture, which everyone and everything existing is a part of. Due to the critical stage of social isolation that Autumn Blaze was in, she probably had to think like this to feel like she was a part of something. All in order to sustain her happy spirit, despite not being able to have conversations with others.
Idk, out of all the one-appearance characters in the show, Autumn is by far the most lovable and inspiring. She made me remind myself that, with the right mindset, you don't have to feel alone, even in the loneliest of situations.
I usually don’t like covering MLP like this because I really just watch it because I enjoy it and it makes me happy but I want to express my love for this episode somehow
Did anyone else notice the lack of young Kirin? It seems like the Kirin was in some serious danger when the Stream of Silence was stifling their emotions
@@winter2716 that scene isn't very long though, and I thought that some of them did sound male. Also in the song Autumn Blaze mentions a male Kirin in their version of The Phantom of the Opera
@@winter2716 the only difference between the male and female Kirin models is the length of the eyelashes. So that is probably why you didn't notice any.
Autumn Blaze is voiced by Rachael Bloom, a comedian that's also known for her very "adult" YouTube videos. I'm surprised that they chose her to guest star in MLP, but her talent speaks for itself.
Yeah it is hard to tell the Male and Female Kirin apart. at first I thought it was like Pony's where females had eyelashes and males didn't. But here they call the Phantom of the Opera Pony a guy but he has eyelashes too.
DWK's Totally Legit Recap of "Sounds of Silence" is easily my absolute favorite of his TLRs. And I never thought anypony could edge out Tree Hugger and RaRa on my list of MLP One-Shot Waifus, but danged if Autumn Blaze didn't blow them away.
There are a couple instances I've noticed on the tail end of the series where a VA misspoke when recording dialogue. This episode is the first of those, the second of which is in the Season 9 finale. The one in this episode is in the reprisal of the song, where the last line was supposed to be 'it's a lesson that my village finally learned'.
According to the show-makers, some of those kirin are male. They just didn't have much time to design them and didn't end up making them very different.
Fun fact: If you're familiar with Game Grumps or their video game-themed band Starbomb, Autumn Blaze is the voice of Princess Peach in the song "Luigi's Ballad."
Maybe, since she's been kind of lonely and bored for so long, she began... experimenting with different herbs, if you catch my drift. It was just happenstance that those flowers helped her speak again.
Applejack going on a camping trip to a nearby, familiar, and safe location: takes along a full set of gear. Applejack going on a mission into unknown wilderness inhabited by unfamiliar creatures: takes nothin' but her hat.
Rachel Bloom as Autumn Blaze, one of the craziest pick for My Little Pony. Fuck me Ray Bradley is a great song of her, but she is more known for her tv show: Crazy ex-girlfriend, totally recommend it.
I think the reason flutter wanted to keep them silent cause she thought that once they become nirik they lose control of themselves. Which was why she was surprised when autumn blaze was shown to control herself as nirik
That Autumn Blaze is just a little loopy is almost a miracle. Twilight learned from Rockhoof about the Kirins, and even he knew only legends about them. Well Ol´Rocky was gone for the last 1.000 Years, and the whole Nirik-debacle didn´t last long. There is no way to know how long it took Autumn to trip into the flowers, but even before she could talk again she had problems with the silence. Maybe the River didn´t have the full effect on her for some reason. Anyway. Depending on how long it took for her to get her voice back, and how long it took for the others to cast her out, she could have been completely alone in tose woods for hundreds of years. Maybe even longer than Celestia has her job!
There is no reason that the current generation of kirin couldn't be much younger, living close to a pony's lifespan, and that the silencing of their nirik halves was a more recent event. Rockhoof's shield told of the kirin and nirik, but it did not mention anything about one of them not existing, or clashing with the other. Also, since the legend did not even state they were the same creature, whoever wrote about them clearly could not have known anything about their culture.
"The Sounds of Silence" Really does show Character improvement between Applejack and Fluttershy, if you ask me Fluttershy is the only one who improved, Applejack still to ignorant and stubborn to listen until they are literally shouting at her face. Aside from all that, Fluttershy had really grown, compared to S3 Magic Duel and now, it looks like Fluttershy is a whole new person and I really like that.
