For me, I recommend this mode. It runs very great on my HOST Computer and its running on version 1909.

If this continues to use as an MS-DOS mode, I think there will be less people to use Windows. But, they would look more like a professional than Windows today.

Isnt this just same function as safe mode with only CMD? The only difference seems to be only making special menu as one click convenience without pushing Shift button with restart menu.

That has nothing to do with MS-DOS mode. That is interrupting the Windows boot process at an early stage, but a) there is no underlying MS-DOS, b) the system is already in graphics mode and dping multitasking, c) SYSTEM priviledges can be easily obtained by running a single command of SysInternals tools while running your Windows system w/o any tricks that require rebooting.
A Windows Server installation without GUI would at least give a real console-only feeling. It is rarely used though, because not having the Windows GUI available makes management hard and most server applications just expect Windows to have a working GUI and are therefore incompatible with a Windows Server that (officially) does not have a GUI at all.

This is not MS-DOS, but a console using MS-DOS commands. It won't run DOS programs, so it's not DOS.

i'm using this on a headless windows instance running in QEMU, and even though this is 3 years old, it still works perfectly. (using 22h2)

"Single user mode", like in Linux, is perhaps a better name, as the only thing it has it common with MS-DOS is a command prompt. (My pet peeve: when people call the Windows command prompt, or worse, PowerShell, "DOS". I've even heard Linux terminals being referred to as a "DOS window".)

Would it be possible to make "init 1", "init 5" and "init 6" work, as synonyms of "msdos", "win" and "reboot"? (Too bad "sudo" is impossible.)

The Windows console is light years far from DOS. No 16 bit real address mode, that is not DOS. If you want to have DOS, you have to boot it. Or install and run a DOS emulator. https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1

Hey Enderman, amazing project, but I was thinking how i should be able to destroy a malware, so can you make a tutorial?

There is a weapon more powerful then this in theory and that is the recovery mode option as it is a ramdisk, more accurately located at recovery/<numbers>/winre.wim as this literally loads as ram disk, it allows access to anything in theory via the same shift+f11 trick and should be able to do anything to the system as it is operating on a offline system, this plus a USB pen with say 7zip on it, can be used to perform very specialised operations, such as resetting the registry via over writing system32/config with a version from a install.wim(You can access files in a wim file via 7z or other tools).

Again I don't advise anyone to dare do this without knowing exactly what they are doing as you can actually delete otherwise protected folders, heck even if one wanted to be a mad man in theory use it to replace windows with linux using windows.

It's not really a "true" MS-DOS mode, as MS-DOS is supposed to boot as a command-line only system. However, things like Windows 95 have MS-DOS as the base system.

Help, I did this on a Windows 10 machine and I don't know how to get out. I only executed the bat file, and didn't do anything else before or after that.

So normal with multiple operating systems, just click Windows 10 and bam! MS-DOS!

That's not an elevation exploit, that's simply an UAC prompt.

If you type exit on ms-dos mode it will return you to the lock screen but network, sound is disabled so you might need to restart your computer

So when you boot up your pc into safe mode BUT using an old version of windows. there is a desktop and with the command prompt you can run explorer.exe to pretend that windows is running in normal safemode

For those of you who want to try this on Windows 11, it works perfectly, however if you start explorer it will use the Windows 10 task bar, and the taskbar doesn't function.

Good malware (usually ransomware) will just overwrite this and force you into their locked mode
