This might just be me but their mane colours look reversed. Twilight's is purple with pink stripes and Moondancer's is pink with purple striped. Also, Moondancer is yellow and yellow is directly opposite purple, twilight's colour, on the colour wheel. I reckon these two, despite sharing a mane style are actually opposites in a way.

I really like how moondancer looks like twi, and how their cutiemarks and names sorta relate. Its obvious that royalty related to ruling equestria have names relating to the varying skies and space, and I like to think Moondancer is a missing part of that. It would have been cool for her to be Luna's personal student, lol.

I think that Moondancer admired Twilight SO MUCH that she just wanted to look like her in order to "be as good as her" y'know, being as similar as your idol could make you feel better 'bout yourself...at least that's what I thought when I saw this episode

i feel most recolor situations are pretty simple to explain: it's just a main-style.
Twilight [and subsequently Moondancer] has the pony equivalent of the hair style commonly used in anime/cartoons to imply a smart and introverted girl, one of minimal effort that still looks 'nice' and professional.
Rainbow's mane-style is even less effort, probably just brushed through enough to avoid tangles and getting snagged by things; the sort of hair style someone who's more focused on sporty-activities then fashion would have and the sort of style an adventurer would default to [plus a slight variant of it shows up in background ponies]
Heck, all the main-six's mane styles could potentially show up elsewhere... for the most part... Rarity probably invented her mane-style or it would possibly show up on a model/designer/whatever and Fluttershy probably only gets away with her mane-style because she has a bunch of animal friends to help with brushing it and has likely not gotten it cut in ages...
TL;DR 'recolor' ponies showing up in canon is just a case of one main body type and only so many ways one can style their mane, would you call a human with the same hair style as another a 'recolor' in other media?

Then, change her skin colour.


Make a ponytail on the top of her hair.


Change her hair colour.


Add in eyebrows.


Remove wings (If she has some obviously)

I honestly think Moon Dancer was designed with a Twilight template by the founders/creators of the show, or by the fans on Deviant Art *(still using the Twilight template)*.
The same goes for Daring Do. She looks a lot like RD, and I assume the same.
HOWEVER , I also noticed that Moon Dancer and Twilight share similar personalities. And so do Daring and Dash. I just think not much effort went into these characters, and that their personalities were either made that way to benefit the plot, or the writers just saw them as replicas of Twi and Dashie.

In “A Series Of Unfortunate Events”, the oldest sister, Violet, always kept her hair up and out of her face so she could think clearly. Why do I mention this? This could explain why Moondancer’s hair is always up

What if Moondancer and Daring doo were alternate realities of themseleves. That just so happened to be in the same parallel universe. An alternate version would like similar. But different to an extent. Maybe something went wrong with a spell at one point and has combined universes?

probably character designers thought kids would be too stupid to see them as foils of each other unless they made them look identical. you have to keep that in mind when considering all the design choices, a lot of it could just be dumbing things down to make sure kids get it (not always necessary but media producers like to do that)

What if moondancer’s and twilight’s parents were close friends, and even had their daughters on the same day? And so, with magic being friendship and all, their children were born with those stripes that look identical. But at some time while the two are infants, their parents had kind of drifted apart emotionally or got into some situation that totally ruined their friendship, but the magical connection with Moondancer and Twilight , they reunited at school, and grew up together from there on. With moondancer looking up to twilight for being the smarter friend , she styles her hair to look like twilight’s (like you , The Brony Nation, said) . But when twilight doesn’t show up to MD’s birthday and doesn’t come back , MD’s heartbroken so she tries to look a little different by putting her hair up but their magical bond is still there

Remeber the idea of a dream team, and who would walk in dreams after Luna? What about Moondancer, she fits the theme, has powerful magic, and is quite similar to Twilight herself, yes Luna and Celestia don't look and aren't 100% similar but, they have a different build of body, not even the other alicorns (Cadence, Twilight, and Flurryheart) have the body strucksure! So it would make sense that the two new rulers also had some kind of simeraltiy! Luna also means Moon, and dancing is a series of movements, just like walking, puting one hoof in front of another so maybe instead of dream walking, Moondancer will dream dance, I know this is a bit of a crazy therory, and why Moondancer, when Twilight has closer friends, and well, I think it is like when Celestia locked Nightmare Moon up, each pair of rulers have to go through a time without the other, I realise how important they are to each other! Please don't hate, it's just my oppinuon and an idea! Also I saw a comment by xeno5 saying about how Moondancer and Twilight are oppsites of each other (with there colour plattes) just like Celestia and Luna!

Being serious, I think they're half sisters. Twilight's mother is where that manestyle comes from. Moondancer must be related to Twilight Velvet. And it doesn't seem unrealistic to think that she had Moondancer, but then had a fallnig out with Moondancer's father and split up, then falling in love with Night Light who she had Twilight with.

The one thing that causes issues here, is that this would make Moondancer a year older than Twilight, yet they're in the same class. Assuming ponies take 12 months like RL ponies. But if it's 9 months, then this is possible. It's really not the strangest thing, for people who go to school together to be siblings without knowing it. Just ask anyone for their family tree in this day and age, and you'll be shown a tangled forest. My own family tree is utterly insane. It's awkward when your sisters take a look and realise "Wait, we aren't blood related to each other?!" and yet they're both blood related to me. I have only 1 full blood sibling, the rest are all half bloods and step siblings. We're one family, but so few can even remember how we're connected in the tree. It just doesn't matter anymore. Who I call brother or sister comes down to who I grew up with for me.

So while I never experienced meeting someone and finding out they were related later, I have seen it happen. And it is generally people who live nearby... When it comes to cheating parents. This is why siblings can end up as neighbours. I just don't think Moondancer was the result of cheating, so much as it was just a simple breakup, with Moon's father getting full custody. Hell maybe Moondancer actually knew this?! Maybe she was drawn to her younger sister because she knew they had that connection that she was told to keep secret.

This would also mean that Morning Roast is also Twilight's older half sister. I just think this sounds better than them being twins and that was Moony was kidnapped or something.

i don’t think faring doo and moondancer are just lazy recolors, i think they were designed that way on purpose. moon dancer and twi are similar in a sense that moondancer shows what twilight could’ve been had she never went to ponyvile. in fact, twilight was well on her way to living the same way. it just goes to dhow two similar people reflected eachother as a mirror do: in a different way. daring doo and rainbow dash was probably just supposed to be similar in a way. some nerdy adventurous risk taker writing about her adventures, and rainbowdash fighting this infatuation with the series when daring doo was first introduced as a book series n pony. they’re both alike, despite the line being drawn at an activity rainbow dash found distasteful. the designs to me say “same but different”.

Coming back here after the show is over and before g5 starts makes me wish the show would have established more mane six look-a-likes.

Moondancer and Dareing Doo already exist but what if every main six member had a recolor counterpart, we would have had atleast one episode for each lookalike.
I even have ideas for the counter parts:
Applejack's would be a recently discovered cousin in the pear branch of her family.
Rarity's would be maybe a struggling painter who needs inspiration.
Pinkie's might be a pony who keeps their walls up and never lets anyone in.
Fluttershy's could be an abrasive pony who tries their best to be kind but who might fall short.

Maybe she's just holding on to the belief that Twilight might come back, and that everything could've gone back to normal, so she kept on dying her mane. But when Twilight did come back, she was dissapointed and didn't want to see her anymore. It just didn't live up to her fantasies or something.

Or maybe that's just her natural mane color.

Interestingly, on the original Moondancer toy (Gen 1, baby!) she only had stripes on her mane . I never really thought this was weird as a kid, but now I'm like...WAIT a minute! :P The tail is the mane's...main colour but solid. I should know, I've still got her in a box somewhere, and WOW that didn't sound psychopathic at all... XD


As for Daring Do, I...always kind of figured her hair was in grey stripes (not counting the actual real-life reason, which is probably "they were lazy") because it USED to be more colourful, and had gone grey! Think about it--how many non-saturated ponies are there? I could easily see Daring Do as a middle-aged but still tough grumpy mentor type, ya know, the "I'm too old for this beep!" kind of character.

After all, she has been writing successful books for a while, and in real life that's an industry that usually takes a good bit of time and persistence to get into, let alone become a best seller. I also always got the feeling of a full-grown adult who has lived some life talking to a teenager/college student, with her and Rainbow's interactions.


So, seperated at birth from Rainbow Dash herself...maybe not. Seperated at her MOM'S birth...maybe? (shrug)

Mmmm. I can’t lie, I love the idea of Moondancer’s hair being styled after Twilight in admiration. It’s so adorable

Daring Do and Moon Dancer are RD and Twilight without their elements. They symbolize the way they used to live their lives, Twilight being obsessed with studying and Rainbow obsessed with herself. Friendship and loyalty changed both these characters for the better and this is how the writers show it.

What if it was the other way round and them looking so similar was just the reason they became friends? (Not so they were only friends because of that but how they got talking if that makes sense)

Maybe when Rainbow and Moon were younger they wanted to be like the ponies they admire, and that’s why they changed their styles to be more like them.

I believe the similar design was completely intentional, not to the taste of the characters, but to show a symbolism behind.
Moon Dancer is a figure very similar to that of Twilight, perhaps to show who is watching how similar they are on the outside, or by a very light layer of life experience.  The change in "the way she takes care of herself" helps the viewer to understand how affected she has been by certain things that have changed the way she sees the world a lot, just as the viewer sees her change their similarity.
Also reflects how Twilight reacts when it realizes that one of its friends is in trouble, after all, "who never put themselves in someone's shoes to understand how they feel?"

Because of the reason being Moondancer looked up to her. Think about it, all Moondancers life she looked up to twilight.
It makes sense.

Twilight and Moon Dancer could be cousins. It would make sense why they have genetic similarities. All the ponies have genetic consistencies in their families. Similar colors, similar cutie marks, similar eyes. Makes the most sense, and also why Moon Dancer wanted to look to Twi in the first place. Some cousins who grow up together end up having several types of familial relationships. The younger cousin will try be, in at least one way for every aspect, the same as their older cousin. Younger cousins who grew up with their older cousins almost always have the desire to impress them and idolize them. Instead of sibling competition, it would end up being more like one cousin worshipping the other and the other is oblivious to it. The older cousin is so used to being around their younger cousin that they even forget that they’re friends as well as family. The older cousin gets bored faster and wants to go off and do other things while younger cousin is expected to stick with their cousin like always.

This kind of dynamic between cousins can get toxic. The older cousin becomes neglectful or abusive, often taking advantage of their younger cousin’s adoration of them, and even the older’s friends. Younger cousin wants to be a part of the friend group. Wants to learn how to just be from the very person they look up to. This dynamic is rarer amongst cousins who are closer in age, and is more common between cousins with relatively large age gaps. This large age gap usually means that the younger cousin may be too young to be around older cousin and their friends, especially if it involves things that younger cousin shouldn’t know about at that age. It can get messy, really.

Twilight didn’t notice Moon doing almost everything she did. That Moon was copying her. Twilight always felt alone because she thought nobody wanted to do the fun things she wanted to do, so she stuck her face in a book and hardly ever noticed Moon Dancer. If they’re family, Twilight was probably more comfortable hanging around another smart family member than she realized. She never sought to understand herself, to the point that she didn’t understand friendship until she was forced to leave to Ponyville. Moon Dancer was probably sick of never being noticed and chose to spite Twilight. She shut herself away and kept reading her books long after they graduated from school as foals.

Knowing that they are both unicorns with a high magic potential it could be possible Moondancer got hold of a permanent hair spell. When she was betrayed by Twilight, however, she wanted to try to change her look up (tying her hair) it also was convenient

I think it’s because everyone in the old friend group matches with someone, for example Twinkle Shine and Lemon Hearts or Minuette and Lyra Heartstrings. So, Twilight Sparkle and Moondancer were the remaining two so they were designed to match with each other.

Why does Moondancer look like Twilight? Probably in order to better visually represent the bond they once shared, and the similarities between them in personality through a visual medium. It's one of the oldest theming tools in the book you guys. And I can all but garentee you that Daring Doo was NEVER meant to be a real pony in the show, and the reason that Daring originally looked like a blander recolor of Dash was to represent Dash inserting herself into Daring's place in the story. As people generally tend to do when they read.

Moon - Dancer and Twilight are meant to represent Unicorn Twilight and Princess Celestia. It shows how Twilight has developed throughout the years and that Twilight sees her past self in Moon - Dancer.

Hasbro uses the same templates for most of the characters and recolors them, if you look at background characters you can see how many are similar. Hasbro was just being lazy.

I always assumed the Doylist reason was to draw a direct narrative parallel between Twilight and Moondancer. Sort of a, this would have been what Twilight became if she never went to Ponyville and learned about the importance of friendship.

I think Moon Dancer would look very good as an Alicorn with glasses on. All we need is to have Princess Twilight get her ready for friendship missions, she could do some and hopefully get her wings!

Just explained my theory in the rainbow do video so here we go and copy paste: well, a lot of ponies are very similar to each other. many characters share design. you could say it's animation lazyness, but I actually think it makes sense. why? they. are. all. horses. when you remove the color patterns, most horses would look the same to you, unless you're a horse expert or something. horse faces don't vary like human faces. the mlp ponies aren't exactly real horses, they can be born with basically any color in the world and their snout size can vary beyond human nose standards. due to these features they look different from one another, and this is why it stands out to us when two of them look the same, but we should remember they aren't humans. Also even unrelated humans can look really similar, hasn't anyone told you you look just like that celebrityTM, come on

I know, I know I'm 4 years late, but let me say this, I know some of you say Hasbro was lazy, but think about it, you know that saying where you're super great friends and that friend is like the sister/brother you never had, I think that's the case with Moondancer and Twilght.

Twilight and Moondancer be similar but they're a bit different.

Twilight seems more with it. She seems organized and professional.

Moondancer on the other hand looks a bit disheavled and also more eager about socializing.

Probably Moondancer relies on Twilight for support. Twilight might have taken Moondancer for granted maybe even finding her kind of creepy that she would hang out with her.

Twilight at least can compose herself in public well but Moondancer was probably more awkward.

Certain ponies lok like each other because they share similar traits; be it a love of adventure, loyalty, or personality traits or interests. Its that simple :)

I do like the idea that Moondancer was a Huge admirer of Twilight. I also personally like to think that they’re cousins. Hence the stripes in her mane and tail

I’ve noticed lots of ponies that have the same body/ mane as the main six, but most of them are background characters

First one I remember is the pony in the song “ behold princess twilight sparkle” ( not long after twilight became a alicorn )
There were ponies that looked like flutter shy with yellow hair and with rarities base ( not including the horn )

There are actually older generation of mlp that include characters that look alike to these two re colors. They are basically an older version of rainbow and twilight. Otherwise, they resemble what they would have been if they hadn't discovered friendship. My theory is that they are just kinda something the actors put in there to show that that's what twilight or rainbow could have been if they hadn't discovered friendship. But both of them have now that they met there future selfs. Notice that daring do has a grey mane. It's got the shades and stripes of dashes, but it's just dull. Maybe that's because she hasn't actually discovered friendship yet, or she is literally the opposite of rainbow dash. Just leaving out the awesomeness. It doesn't have the same thing with moon dancer tho. What do you think of my theory so far?

Fun Fact : Twilight's old friends are Moondancer , Minuette , Lemon Heart, Twinkleshine and Lyra Hearstring . Like Twilight and Moondancer have the same character model also Twinkleshine and Lemon Heart do and same for Minuette and Lyra . Pretty cool I think

but a recolour of a main character and we suddenly need to hyper analyse it

real life people have look-alikes all the time

In My Little Pony season 5 episode 12 "Amending Fences" if you pay attention, Lemon Drop and Twinkle Shine look like recolored versions of one another (with different cutie marks of course) and if you pay attention to the picture Spike gave Moon Dancer later on in the episode; Lyra Harpstrings and Minuet (idk how to spell her name) look awfully similar too.

My theory is that since they were a friend group with an even number of ponies (6) they decided that the 2 ponies that get along the most or go with each other, should twin! "Twin" in this case would mean 2 ponies that look alike or a lot like another pony.

Now, seeing as Moon Dancer obviously gave up on friendship after Twilight didn't show up to her party and left Canterlot, she grew out her hair and tied it back and also grew out her eyebrows (those eyebrows tho😭) to show she was done twinning with a pony she thought was her friend and didn't care about friendship anymore after Twilight betrayed her (in a sense), but left her tail alone because she still had some hope that she would still try friendship.

Another version of the "leaving her tail alone because so and so" theory (which this one was the original theory I had), is that Moon Dancer left her tail alone to show she still had hope in Twilight coming back to apologize and amend fences (ha ha see what i did there), which Twilight did.

The reason Moon Dancer didn't accept Twilight Sparkles apology right away is because when Twilight didn't come to the party, it meant a lot to her because she was finally trying to socialize and make new friends, and one of her old/main friends, the one she looked up to the most, didn't show up and it hurt her.

I think it was more or less cause they both are the same in some ways, the same with daring do.
I think they made them look the same so you could put them together when first seeing them

Excuse me while I start off in a different universe to explain my theory.

I think it's more of a Boy Who Lived situation. By that I mean both Harry Potter and Neville Longbottom had a very similar background and, according to the prophecy, could both have been the one to take down Voldemort. In the HP universe Voldemort could have 'chosen' either of the boys and ultimately he picked Harry.

Twilight Sparkle and Moon Dancer probably have more similarities aside from their looks. I think that Moon Dancer could very well have been the Princess of Friendship if conditions had been just right for her to take that part. Instead it was Twilight Sparkle who caught Celestia's attention. Can you imagine if it had been Princess Moon Dancer instead and it had been Twilight Sparkle whom had stayed behind as a loner in Canterlot? Could have happened.

Here’s my theory they were going to be the first design but they chose the ones that we know and love but they were good so they wanted to keep them in the story so they Kept him in the story but it’s different characters that we know today

I like to think maybe it was the hairstyle of someone in a book they both liked and since they don't really care about looks they just never changed it

It may also be because those two where in the same group of six friends. If you look closely, two of them are also recolors, and the third one (Colgate) shares the same design as Lyra, who was also part of that group of friends, so maybe all the girls decided to look like the other in pairs

I always assumed that she wanted to pretend she was Twilight or related to Twilight since she doesn't seem to have any close family so she may have wanted to be like a sister to Twilight so she could have some semblance of family, even if Twilight was her idol.

Moondancer looks like Twilight because every character in that friend group looks like another pony within the group. (Twilight and Moondancer, Minuettte and Lyra Heartstrings, Lemonheart and Twinkleshine) so they needed one to look like Twilight as well. That or they either used that to make the personality of Moondancer or they used it in the reverse way and made her look like Twilight because of her personality

I agree with you, but I want to add that moon dancer might have wore her mane up because she did not admire twilight anymore.

It probably was just Moondancer styling herself after someone she respects and wants to emulate. The easiest way to start doing that would be through one's appearance.

I think the stripes were just natural and the rest she tried to look like twilight and I have some thing aextra moondancer's eyebrows change the first time we see moondaner her eyebrows are small but the second time we see her eyebrows are big but the third time we see her eyebrows are big and then after she showed moondancer the party and said sorry her eyebrows change to small I know why the first time we see her is in a flash back and she was happy that's because she didn't throw parties probely thinking what does parties have to do with eyebrows well Twilight was always studying so if she a finishes a book she would read a another book so she would always have a lot of studying so even back then she would say no only after she had went to Pony vill she would say yes and moondancer really wanted Twilight to be there she got mad you know when someone mad and there eyebrows change

You know I hated that episode. Twilight forced Moondancer into the whole friendship and party thing just to clear her conscious and get closure. Moondancer was perfectly content as she was. Friendship is great and all but it’s not the most important thing in the world or anything. And I don’t think it’s a good message to kids that you can just bother someone until they crack and then they will magically be your friend afterward. This is why I love the villians. Startlight was right about cutie marks. Cozy Glow made several good points. Chrysalis was trying to preserve traditional Changeling culture but had her home taken from her, and Tirek was betrayed by his own brother. I honestly feel bad about their situations and it’s a shame the tyranny of the culture of friendship took over.

I honestly never thought of Daring Do and Rainbow Dash looking similar. I however, instead thought of why Moondancer and Twilight look so similar. Like, right after I saw Moondancer I was like "wait, she looks so similar to Twilight."

About the taił , i think that she changed her hair cause of twilight but , maybe she didnt want to loose her fully and still let her tail to remind her of her "long Lost BFF"

I think she did style her hair after twilight but the stripes were just a coincidence. If twilight can be born with stripes and rainbowdash can born with rainbow hair, I don't think it's to far fetched to say Moon was born with hers.

Moondancer actually reminds me of the one in the 1980s, Moondancee and Star Dancer in are twins in Escape of Nightmare Castle. Just the fact that she is recycled

I first bonded with a childhood friend over the fact that we were wearing the same watch. Maybe twilight and moon dancer first became friends as fillies because of their similar mane patterns?

For Twilight and Moon Dancer, my thoughts are several reasons why they look like each other other then obvious Twilight could have been Moon Dancer. One of the main is their influence on each other, subtitle and otherwise. Another is they are related, but distantly (3-5th cousin) where more dominate trates show, but still far enough that other genetics for other to show up like color, features and so on. The finale being coincidence with being right time, movements and parents meet.

As for Rainbow and Darring Do, I think their is family resemblance, but with Daring Do being more a distant aunt. In case of point, in the episode Dash went fangirl, Daring Do revealed she was doing it for years, to the point her enemies mentioned it and her cranky body revealing it can't handle the stress. Her being a distant aunt that live in seclusion would explain a lot, especially since Dash would have no way to know about her since we have little idea about her family as she could be a orphan for all we know since what must consider her father is labeled by Hasbro as mentor instead of father.

Even Daring Do and Rainbow Dash are the same and they seem like sisters because they both have a brave and adventurous spirit .

Probably a coincidence. People irl can look very similar. Hell, there's a reason the word doppelganger exists. Maybe some ponies with more simple mane styles look similar to each other just like people sometimes do.

Something I just realized now, and I'm a bit surprised to not see any comments about is this: Moondancer looks like Twilight Sparkle to bring symmetry/balance to her old group of friends. Lemon Hearts looks like Twinkleshine, Minuette looks like Lyra Heartstrings, and so to continue the pattern Moondancer looks like Twilight Sparkle.

My theory:

Short answer: Hasbro didn't wanted to make a new model so they used Twilight's old model and just changed a few things such as the cutie mark, colors, etc.

For me there's 3 different ways I could see it, from the lightest to the most in-depth :
- Just doing a recolor to save time with no particular meaning
- Her new manecut is a caricature of her nerdy side. Having given up on friendship, she threw herself to studies and thus didn't go often to the mane dresser and simply adopted that manecut not to be bothered by her mane (that theory is fitting because she's got a "messy" manecut too, with bits of hair popping out everywhere). Also, her new manecut does make her look "grumpy" in my opinion, which is intended to emphasize the fact she doesn't want to have anything to do with friendship anymore.
- Your theory, imitating Twilight because she's her idol. (By the way, looking at that group photo from the ending... How can one NOT take Twilight as an idol? :D)

I'd be fine with either #2 or #3 ^^ I don't believe in something definite because I'm mostly sticking to canon :P

Also I don't know if you noticed (you haven't mentioned it in this video) but during the last scene of the episode, Moon Dancer has her old Twilight-like manecut back. It may be just because she's wearing that helmet after all... but it could also mean that she's back to taking care of her mane (notice how at the same time it doesn't look messy anymore) or that, following your theory, she's back admiring Twilight.

The way the animators animate Mlp is with digital puppets. they can move around the legs and even reuse walk cycles and different forms of movement from previous episodes. You can simply take a twilight sparkle doing magic or even just her walking and select the hair color on each frame and change the colour. for the body all you have to do is take the color and change it to the yellowish color that her body is. Next you just draw out the accessory's and put them on the digital puppet. (correct me if any of this is wrong) This saves a lot of time for the animators. and I'm sure that there might be reasoning behind this and plenty theories.

In all seriousness, my theory is that they look similar for the same reason dopplegangers exist or people can look alike in gemeral. genetics. No, not just being related, but genetics tends to make people look similar for their noses, eyes, height, hair colour, or even their entire physic. Just look at Carrot Top/Golden Harvest and Daisy, or Lemon Hearts and Twinkelshine. So, in conclusion: genetics say so.

Moondancer is the best "bang from the past" event ever. She is even better than Star Swirl the Bearded, who was mentioned in the second season as an existing pony, for some more airtime he revealed himself a little, and became a full-fledged character only at the end of the seventh season. Yes, Moondancer wasn't as well developed as Star Swirl, but the event that started her mental problem was the FIRST event that happened on the show when Twilight refused to come to her party!

I think the creators were having trouble with creating new styles for the ponies so they reused some styles of the pony’s past/future.

Daring Do was obviously just intended to be Rainbow Dash just projecting her own feelings on a fictional character, which is why she imagined her to look like her. And somewhere along the lines, the writers must have decided to make her real and it messed that up. As for Moondancer, like you said, she was literally designed to make her be like Twilight. Nothing really worthy of hypothesizing over.

To me it really just looks like the colors in twilights mane was reversed and put into moon dancer. Same hair style, eye color, personality, and twilights skin is purple while moon dancers is yellow, so it kinda reminds me of celestia and Luna!

I have noticed that the group of six friends before twi moved to pony ville, including twinkle shine, lyra heartstrings, moon dancer, lemon hearts and minuette, there are three sets of 2 with identical mane and tail styles.  Lemon Heart and Twinkle Shine.  Minuette and Lyra Heartstrings.  And finally Twilight and Moon Dancer.

I feel like the character designer just didnt know how to design some of the other ponies so they made replica's of the mane 6 and changed the colour pallette and some other features.

okay but now that I look at it doesn’t Moondancer remind you slightly of some other pony except twilight? I mean personality wise especially... she isn’t very patient, was hurt by someone close to her, she is smart but kinda hotheaded and slightly rude... she reminds me of Sunset... even the mane is like a reddish purple. Moondancer’s skin is yellow, but it has a tint of really light purple making it not as saturated. Theory: moondancer is twilights and sunsets child from the future that in some freaky accident got sent back in time and raised in that timeline which she doesn’t remember because she was too young.

Moondancer was basically inverted colors of twilight, with the pink and purple mane/tail colors switched and her coat was yellow (a complimentary color to purple)

While I watched MLP, I noticed there are more characters than Moon Dancer who has similar mane as Twilight.

Have you ever heard the theory that there are only so many different combinations of facial structures, and that, by law of averages, there are bound to be people who like uncannily alike? Well, maybe the same is true in horse-land; and maybe even to a greater degree. Perhaps this applies to both Twilight/Moondancer as well as Rainbow/Daring Do.

Maybe Twilight's style was a common way of wearing your hair back then, and now the style changed, but Twilight didn't.

Cousins? Night light is Twilight's father, and it's a known fact that names are spoofs of both parents, etc. So Night Light has a cousin, with the shared relative is on Night Light's side.

Here's my theory (it's a bit long):

Okay so a lot more often than not, friendships are started by having something in common.

Moondancer and Twilight not only look alike but also have similar interests but what's to that it didn't start out that way? Twilight could've introduced the world of books and studying to her which could explain why they probably weren't equivalent intellectually and magically since Twilight had a head start. This would push Moondancer to study even harder to the point of seclusion so that she could keep up with Twilight. This would also explain why she was so hurt when Twilight didn't come to her party. How would you feel if your best friend, the person who inspired you to be the person you are, didn't show up to your first social event?

Also, Twilight leaving left a gap in her life. Having no one to compare her knowledge with, she continued doing what she always did, study.

So if Moondancer and Twilight weren't both interested in books in the beginning, then what could've sparked their friendship? The fact that they look alike. People who share physical traits with you are often easier to approach and Moondancer probably being a shy filly since she didn't have many other friends could've found comfort in their similarities and approached Twilight first.

As for the reason why they look alike, there are only so many combinations that make up a person or pony in this case. In fact, there are on average about 7 other people on the planet who look like you. The fact that they look alike isn't exactly impossible. Especially since there's less physical features (not including color) that are possible in Equestria far as we know, so it wouldn't be unlikely that ponies find look alike.

Anyway, that's my theory. What do you think?

I thought daring do and rainbow dash looks the same because their hairstyle is the most "natural one". What I mean is that we know Rainbow isn't the kind of pony to brush her hair and style her hair elegantly every day, like Rarity would. Her hairstyle has a lot of strands and spikes, it is not elaborate, it's the kind of hairstyle you get when you just brush your hair and do nothing special with it everyday. It's natural that two ponies who have the same personnality and an active and adventurous lifestyle would have the same hair routine, and if that hair routine is just brushing their hair when they wake up and cutting it once in a while, there is not a lot of room for variation and it is normal if their hair ends up looking the same.

I feel like all the mane 6 has 1 or more points with the same design, but different color pallette. Like Twilight and Moondancer, and Rainbow Dash and Daring Do. Maybe the others just have got any screen time or were just used for background characters?

Twilight Sparkle is a great character and all, BUT... she should not be Princess of Friendship. Most of you reading this may be shocked, but here is why she should not be Princess of Friendship.


Season 5, Episode 26 the Cutie Re-Mark part 2. At the end, Twilight and her friends sing a song. In the song, one of the lines they sing is... "Your friends are always there for you." And yes this is after season 5, Episode 12 Amending Fences. BUT... in the episode Amending Fences, at the beginning Spike points out that she was a bad friend by saying... "Come on Twilight, just look at the wall. Do you see any photos before we moved to Ponyville? Look at you know, the Princess of Friendship." As we pan to the wall, we sadly do not see any photos before they moved to Ponyville. Before I move on I would like to add this. Spike brings that information to Twilight like he always knew that she had friends before Ponyville. SO... Spike gives her plenty of time to amend her previous friendships from Canterlot. Now moving on. In Amending Fences after she finds three of her Canterlot friends, she pores her heart out saying sorry for leaving and that Ponyville changed her. Even before she pores her heart out saying sorry for leaving. Her Canterlot friends tell her... "So what brings you by anyway? All those times you came back to Canterlot, you never had donuts with use before." And yes they do forgive her, but not all of them. She was still forgetting about Moon Dancer. In till her Canterlot friends show Twilight the school and at that point she remembers Moon Dancer. When they do find Moon Dancer, all she say's is... "WHAT DO YOU WANT? I'M TRYING TO STUDY." then she slams the door in Twilight's face. Twilight did the same thing to Spike in the very first episode. So you could say Moon Dancer was trying to seclude herself away in her house. But because of Twilight going to Ponyville and not to Moon Dancer's party... Twilight makes Moon Dancer lock herself in her house and makes her shut everyone out of her life. I mean that Moon Dancer tried to open up by inviting her friends to her party. But as you can see in the episode Amending Fences, the pony she wanted to be at her party... DID NOT SHOW UP. And the only one that did not show up... was Twilight. So up to that point you could say, Twilight and Moon Dancer were best friends. Because of Twilight not showing up for Moon Dancer's party... Moon Dancer put's up a wall and secludes herself in her house so no one would hurt her like Twilight did... And for the whole episode, Moon Dancer does not even forgive Twilight for not showing up at her party. I would not forgive someone if I put my guard down to go throw a party and my best friend did not even show up. It took Twilight all the time from Season 1, Episode 2 to Season 5, Episode 12 to say sorry to Moon Dancer and finely show up to her party. I don't even know how many days that was. Twilight didn't even remember her Canterlot friends when it would have been helpful. If Twilight would have just remembered her Canterlot friends, told them why she left and why she didn't go to Moon Dancer's party. Moon Dancer would have forgiven her a lot sooner. But before she even becomes princess, she made amends to all the wrongs she did. BUT ONE. So... she can't be Twilight Sparkle, Princess of Friendship before season 5 episode 12. Just because she is princess, doesn't qualify her to be, Princess of Friendship. If she was such a BAD friend to Canterlot friends for so long.

My theory on this? Moondancer is a Changeling. Possibly an overused line, but think about it. What better way to leech of the strong emotions of friendship than to befriend the future Princess of Friendship? What better way to leech off the strong emotions of loss than to deliberately act against that very friend and pretend to hate them? And what better way to amplify those feelings than to model yourself directly after your victim, so they sympathise with you even more? Moondancer could be a rouge Changeling who decided to go it alone in Equestria.
The only flaw in this is that Changelings (with the exception of Chrysalis) haven't shown any skill in magic past shapeshifting, but perhaps they haven't had any opportunity to learn magic, unlike Moondancer would have.
So what was Changeling Moondancer doing for all those years after she disconnected from her only friends, and only food source? Perhaps she found new friends, and repeated her patterns of behaviour.
