Brony Notion, you're totally right! Sombra comes back for Season 9!!!

I would have loved to see more of Sombra and his character. He has so much potential but they didn't really do anything with him. I'm still hoping that they bring Sombra back for some more action so that we get a better idea of him. After all, all the other villains got way more development in their characters. Even the Mane-iac had more to her character and she just appeared in one episode that seemed a lot more like a filler episode. That just upsets me. Oh, maybe if they do bring Sombra back, they could bring back Queen Chrysalis, too! Maybe a team up! I'd love to see how Sombra and Chrysalis work together!

Sombra's not dead. At the end, his horn survived and got flung off. He may or may not be the Pony of Shadows (maybe collecting more shadow power again) but he has got to come back. He has a lot of potential to become a great villain.

I want to see an actual backstory to Sombra, I saw a PMV of that Sombra was the Crystal King who became corrupt trying to save his kingdom from an eternal snow storm by using the dark magics, long story short it didn't end well.

Yup, not a bad theory at all! But at the end of the episode when we see the shadow, the shadow pony do have a "witch" hat, like we saw with Trixie or some Star Swirl the Bearded artworks.

Sombra was one of the most intense and intriguing villains MLP brought us, I'm praying he comes back :P

I'm pretty much binge-watching all your theories (love 'em!), and I have one to share now! (Even if this is an old video :p) What if Sombra is Luna's son?
Alicorns live for such a long time, they age differently, but Nightmare Moon looked like she definitely was well into adulthood. Luna and Celestia grew apart, and given their duties it wouldn't surprise me if they slept at different times, and didn't see each other for a very long time. Luna could have had so much time on her hands that maybe she fell in love, but then the guy probably liked being awake during the day more or something, leading to an extra reason for Luna's bitterness and why Sombra turned out so, well, evil.
This also bounces back to your theory of Alicorn Magic = Dark Magic, which Sombra would then be able to use because of his mother.
With this theory, even the Shadow Ponies would infact be "leftover evil" from Nightmare Moon, in the sense that they could be descendants from Sombra or perhaps his students. There has got to be some connection here! :D

I hope Sombra comes back! I want more backstory, screentime, voice, etc ... Sombra is such an undeveloped character, but I really want to know how he got that magic, how he turned evil (i.e. his motivation) and the whole scene of what happened to the Crystal Empire!
Personally, I think Sombra was once good like Nightmare Moon, but was .... maybe corrupted? And he turned evil. Maybe he was studying that dark magic, and he took it too far and transformed?

It's sad watching the now second half of season 5, and Sombra still hasn't come back. HE WAS MY FAV VILLAIN, FOR GOODNESS' SAKE!
Despite the fact that he was obviously OBLITERATED in the 2-parter, I want there to be some clever way for him to come back. Like his horn having been intact, and his shadow form slowly becoming his physical self, something along the lines of what Voldemort did.

He sadly didn't appear in the finale, but I'm still holding out hope that he'll make a reappearance in season 5. Also, I hope the writers will continue with Flutterbat.

Seeing this now I am guessing it is Tirek or something Who is from the original MLP but he is returning for this finale AND he had yellow eyes.

I would love to see sombra again hes just as dark and mysterious as star swirl is id love for there to be an episode one either one of those characters, manly casue the fandom ahs made them to be so awesome if Hasbro makes either no ware near as cool as the fandom has I will lose hope

Personally, King Sombra was the very first thing that came to mind when I heard about the 'shadow pony,' but I was expecting it to be yet another Sombra ripoff that lacked evrything that made him great to begin with. The nightmare forces still suck.

I think the shadow pony is someone else: back in the day, many thoughts it was Tirek wich couldn't be, because he would've noticed the 4th alicorn; others thought it was the real pony of shadows, wich also can not be, because we now know it was trapped in limbo. By looking at the shadow of this mysterious creature, I noticed that it looks like a pony wearing a wizard hat and a cape. I think it might be the spirit (we saw spirits in the show before) Of Clover the Clever or some successor/apprentice of Starswirl, who took the master's place by the side of the princesses after he was gone. Of course, giving that creature a reason to be there could complete the theory. Unfortunately, the only valid option that I can think is that, whoever this "pony of shadows" was, it was heavily involved with Luna. That kind of relationship with her, brought this new wizard to be heavily traumatized when Luna was defeated as Nightmare Moon. As the final result, this wizard is now bound to the old castle.

This is entirely just my writer brain working overtime, but...I think King Sombra could be redeemed under the right circumstances.


My idea is that Sombra is the last surviving member a race of ponies. Its clear that besides the main three types, unicorn, pegasi, and earth, there are other pony races like crystal and alicorn. I have a headcanon that he is a sombra, otherwise known as a shadow pony. The shadow ponies were all killed by something, leaving a young colt who was too young to remember much. All he really remembered was the word 'sombra', so when the crystal ponies took him to the Crystal Empire, they made that his name. He grew up alongside crystal ponies, who deeply distrusted him for how different he was. When he got older, he fell in love, married a crystal pony, and he and his wife had a child. This, however, was the last straw for the crystal ponies, who were afraid of Sombra's magical ability. They thought that Sombra might be biding his time before turning his wife against the Crystal Empire and using his own 'evil' magic to take over the Empire. Shortly after the birth of his daughter, Sombra was hunted down and was narrowly saved by his wife, who died defending Sombra and their child. Of course, Sombra was angry and heartbroken, so he decided to keep his daughter safe by taking over and enslaving the ones who had ruined his life. Of course this side of the story was never told to anyone, because history is told by the winners (crystal ponies in this case) and the winners are often too proud to admit they were the cause of such terrible occurrences.

I have a theory about Sombra's motive for ruling over the Crystal empire! It's not thorough, but I'd love for someone, possibly an analyst, to think it through and post on it for me(hint hint). Anyway, so Sombra is probably after power over the empire, but why the Chrystal Empire? For one thing, it's the CRYSTAL Empire. The very buildings are made of crystals. The roads are paved in crystalline pavement. Even the ponies living there shimmer like crystals. The Chrystal heart alone is probably priceless not only because of the fact that it's a big honking piece of crystal shaped like a perfect heart, but also because of its immense power to keep things in check. Forget the ENTIRE CITY. Who knows how much the Crystal Empire is worth! Sombra probably saw it as a chance to be very powerful. Money is often considered in the same boat as power, after all. Imagine what he could control and who he could persuade to do his bidding with that kind of power in his hooves.

I want to see Sombra return, surely that prison in ice cannot hold him forever, can it? He deserves to return, of all the villians in the series, he the one with no known motive and hardly any lines, surely he got to return at some point, Discord got reformed, Trixi got reformed, Starlight got reformed, even Film and Flam got reformed, leaving only three major villians unreformed, one is imprisoned for all eterunty (Trek) while next is the one under ice and the third is in exile having lost her kingdom and much of her power to the power of LOVE along side her people! Sombra should return, maybe the cutie mark map will call some of the mane six or all of them to the Crystal Empire to tackle Sombra and redeem him.

It would be fantastic if Sombra came back because he has very little backstory and motive in The Crystal Empire episodes, but he has at least a TONNE of potential.

It's also in speculation that the Shadow Pony was always Tirek since the figure had a hood and glowing yellow eyes much like Tirek. I might have been a mere coincidence that Tirek was there still regaining power in his weakened form. But I do like the thought of it might being Sombra

my theory is that sombra had an army of dark unicorns that aided him in taking over the crystal empire (becuz who can take over an entire empire single-handedly with two god-like alicorns and their military forces fighting you) and when sombra was turned to shadow, so were all his minions, so the shadow pony is one of them

Maybe they'll address some of those endings more solidly in season 5. I would love to see some more Flutterbat. : )

I think Sombra will come back because his horn did not disintegrate or tern into black smoke. So, I think that horn will be planted in the grown and make a fairly big crystal, which will summon King Sombra.

What would be really nice is if both sombra & chryslias could come back in season 5 (or at least 6) & have them have a two part episode in the middle of the season. Better than doing it in beginning or end of the season. That way we get villains that come back & create some type of threat than there last appearance in other seasons.

The Pony of Shadows could have also been Tirek. I do believe Sombra is dead in canon. But it does bother me that the dark magic energies of the Inspiration Manifestation and FlutterBat were never contained or dealt with. Perhaps they will go elsewhere, and that could lead to Sombra reviving through the possession of another Unicorn.

Don't worry: I'll give you all the Sombra you could ever want in the 'Dark Wars' portion of my fanfics. But... I have to get through the rest of season 2 and all of season 3 first. I probably won't hit season 4 until after 'Dark Wars,' which as I continue to plan becomes more and more expansive. I'm giving all the vanquished villains another shot at the gold ring. Provided Iron Will doesn't mind me borrowing it.

I hope sombra would turn back into his good self because I think there's more to TCE then we all think

you know from mlp idw comic number 34 and the mlp IDW comic special, fiendship is magic about king sombra ' s past. those two comics including number 35, maybe 36... tell about his motive to conquer the crystal empire, and that hope who was once friends with sombra, is somehow working with him, for she was the only one who could put him back together. since her cutie mark is all about healing magic. so my theory is that hope, is the shadow pony. because she probably wants to hide in the shadows until the time is right. since she has to find out more of the mane six, and some personal enemies, like flim and flam, iron will, chrysalis, maybe more. but that was my entire theory on this subject. (man, that was alot of typing.)

I think the shadow pony at the end of Castle Mania was Tirek. Think of it. He escaped in season 2 and appears in the season 4 finale. He obviously had to find a place to hide before he could steal any actual magic.

I think that King Sombra is the KING of the shadow ponies. And that their is multiple shadow ponies. And that his kingdom is outside of equestria but he got greedy and wanted more land and to rule over more ponies and to gain more power so no one could stop him Whether they liked it our not. So he went to the crystal empire because of the powerful crystal heart.

Since MLP utilizes Greek mythos in it's lore, it's not too far fetched that King Sombra will make a return. There was only two occasions Hades, Greek god of the underworld, used his powers crudely. The first time was to put down a defiant king that cheated death. Sombra is the king that cheated death.

It's established that he'll go to great lengths to keep his power. Nightmare door, infinite stairs, alarm system at the crystal heart, and magic proof obsidian prison to trap anyone who comes near the crystal heart. That's a lot of careful planning. He's just bidding his time and he knows Twilight is an alicorn. Possibly more things about the mane six than we think.

I hypothesize that his motives are to prove he's genuinely scary, if not, scarier than that of Nightmare Moon. I think he's going to make an axis mane six to take them out of the picture. Leaving Celestia, Luna, and Cadence out in the open once again but this time they can't hide their magic. He could be the possible reason Tirek escaped Tartarus and since Tirek didn't know about Twilight, Sombra lied to him about her, and Tirek ends up catching Discord in his lie.

Remember he's driven by power; and unlike Tirek, he can utilize that kind of power more effectively. Tirek is more destruction than corruption. Black alicorn amulet! I theorize that the Sombra we all saw was a low powered doppelganger of himself (a unicorn) as a puppet to make you think he died after he was obliterated.

Tirek did take Discord's power away by proxy Sombra went through Tirek to get to Discord. He's an adaptable master manipulator, though subtle. He's scarier than we were initially given. If he can't take back the Crystal Empire, he's going to take all of Equestria, and all without any pony batting an eye at his presence.

Mass brainwashing and with Starlight Glimmer proving that there is a way to remove cutie marks. Whose to say Sombra didn't get to the scepter? Every pony still has magic but it's rendered useless and knowing that the magic of the Empire is strong enough to go all across Equestria. Sombra knows this very well. Plus knowing that Sombra is a doesn't have a cutie mark makes him immune to the scepter's magic by default. Chills.

By this one fact: Where is Scorpan now? They never established his future in Equestria. All we know about Scorpan is that he turned on Tirek to save Equestria from him with Starswirl. That granted him friendship among ponies and one of his friends is none other than Starswirl the Bearded. Sombra is going to definitely come back stronger than ever before and he'll be defeated by Scorpan. Scorpan understands the magic of friendship better than Discord. Possibly being the first to discover the elements of harmony tree. He gave Starswirl the idea of friendship but couldn't utilize the magic of the tree due to his evil past. I think you need to be pure at heart to use the elements to their full potential.

I think Scorpan balances the tree and he's looking for Sombra. Scorpan is Hades. By the way, Hades can love and be compassionate. Tirek is Deimos (fear, dread, and terror) and Sombra is Phobos (note the similar color scheme). (Phobos is fear, flight, and war. Black alicorn amulet.)  Phobos and Deimos are brothers. I digress.

Well, Arygua, the part of sombras horn in part 2 of the season 3 opening broke off inside the protection bubble... It grew into a crystal, and the horn of the unicorn is where the magic seems to be stored. If that is so, Sombra's horn may be able to bring him back! Wow... I should be an analyzer!!! I didn't even plan all that!!!

Nope. Here's why.
The leftover magic from nightmare moon would look like the creatures that made her nightmare moon. That thing certainly looks like the nightmare forces (the things that took over and controlled Luna.) So I think that Granny Smith was right. This might come into play in later seasons. Soo... I think the Shadow pony was Trec. Every season has a two parter with some major villain. Season 4'd was Trec. Trec had a cloak that looks like the shadow pony's and he has yellow eyes. So in theory the shadow pony could in fact be Trec. Yes? No? Maybe but needs more evidence?

Sombra actually got a backstory in one of the MLP comics, the first installment of the "Fiendship is magic" series.  No, fiendship was not a typo, it's a special series delving into the backstories of a few of the villains.  (I know a lot of people don't consider these to be canon, but I personally enjoy them and think they offer much needed insight into some of the more obscure pony lore.)  I recommend checking it out if you are a Sombra fan, or if you were disappointed with his lack of actual character.

While I do think sombra might come back. I don't think it's the pony of shadows. Mainly cause glowing yellow eyes isn't his signature rather than dark magic smoke think from his eyes.

As for the "Pony of Shadows" being Sombra, like other commentators are saying, that actually seems to be Tirac. However, Sombra IS a Shadow Pony, even though he isn't the "Pony of Shadows".

I was thinking of star swirl the bearded, who also has yellow eyes. The shadow also looks like it has some kind of hat on. :3 Its a long shot, but it would be super cool.

I don't think Sombra is coming back well cause he doesn't have YELLOW eyes and he doesn't wear a witch hat like Trixie's but yes he was turned to shadow by the two sisters but at the end of The Crystal Empire Sombra dies or gets torn to pieces by the crystal heart and gets blown any so that does mean he died.

If Sombra was a shadow he would escape the frozen north or however that place is called because you can't toutch a shadow and the shadow can't toutch so he could easily go up to the surface but, why did he have to wait that long?I don't think he freeze down there because like i said he is a shadow.Does any of you have another excplanation?

I think Sombra was shadowed in past. Mabye he was using the dark magic like Celestia and Twilight but he wasnt as strong to wightstand it.

In my fanfic he comes back without a physical form and he is stuck in the form of a timber wolf haven possessed it. Then with the help of the antagonist, the possessed prince, he takes form of a dragon

1.No matter what "Sombra" means, I really don't think that was supposed to be him at the end of "Castle Mane-ia"

2.I think the shadow pony that appears at the end of "Castle Mane-ia" was intended as a throw-away joke, and that there will be no more mentioning of it.

The season 7 finale, "Shadow Play," featured the Pony of Shadows and it wasn't Sombra; it was an entirely new character!

sombra will return! Why? because in his episodes the shield went down and back up breaking part of his horn off and when the shield started going again and the castle  became unsealed he was able to control the horn piece. and at the end of the episode his horn survives and if at least one other survived then he may be able to come back together for a revenge attack as long as a part does not get sealed then the parts can com together and he may be able to reforge

No, I think the shadow there was tirek. The shadow obviously had a cape on, and his eyes were yellow--just like tirek! Plus, he was the villain in the finale.

ok maybe im the only one with this head canon, but i have a question/theory. 
would it be possible for there to have been a pony who more or less pushed Luna to become night mare moon with there shadow magic, if so what if they never left the old castle, and there presence caused the old story of the shadow pony being the left over magic as apposed to the spell caster themselves? some one who saw how close Luna and cilestia were and resented the friendship?

I think either King Sombre, Tirek or Queen Chrysalis will come back in future episodes.

The shadow Pony could have been Zecora because she has always motions so surely one of them could turn into a shadow Plus she has like a coat and she could use that to like hide that it's her and not someone else

i think he was a good unicorn named somber with a regular horn and a red crystal for a cutie mark.He also saw a spell that interested him and he casted it but he read it wrong and it separated him from his dark half.His dark half grew stronger and in a life threatening situation,it took over and destroyed his good half and became king sombra 

After Season 4 finale I just assumed it was Tirek in his weakened form

I do believe the shadow was Zecora! In season 1 episode 9 "Bridal Gossip" she wears a hood similar to that in the shadow and her eyes have the same yellow glow. She also lives in the Everfree Forest and collects all the rare plants. Given that it is a royal castle they must have some type of exclusive rare plants like in the new castle garden. So my guess is that she was going to gather some things to brew up a potion.

i wish that they wouyld bring back sombra too... but they would only do so if they ran out of ideas. and i do NOT see that happening any time soon. plus... he kinda... blew up. there was his horn left over that they could work off, but i would see that more like... a desperate pony (like Trixie) would want more power, be drawn to teh horn (like Rarity with her geode) find it, and manage to summon its power in some way or another. new season finale! still, i doubt the writers would do so, unless they went trixie, (desperate) but still cool to think about.

wait before I say any thing if you haven't seen it you need to watch the fall of the crystal empire fan animation but if you have seen it then consider this king sombra is basically the one who turned luna into nightmare moon but what if nightmare moons dark power came from the evil power sombra used on her to make her see her worst nightmare so it would make sense if the dark power left over from nightmare moon was the evil magic placed in side her by sombra's evil nightmare stair he used on her that turned her evil in the first place and if its true then it could explain how he could return as the pony of shadows as you said and if you have any problem with the theory please say what it is

Why are a ton of people saying he was right, when the only reason sombra came back was BECAUSE of discord (disguised as grogar)?

i think they need to bring sombra back because they didn't give him any characteristic or speaking rolls  so we really know nothing about his character 

Of course Sombra is coming back, but this episode is not proof of that. The shadow at the end is not Sombra, and it's true identity is still wide open for discussion.

Although it appears as if Sombra was destroyed in S3-E2, you are talking about an evil unicorn that has the ability to dissolve into shadow and thus can never be completely destroyed no matter how much light you shine on him. Light and shadow are two sides of the same coin, one can not exist without the other! If anything, Sombra should return in a later season/episode as an antagonist to Twilight's "light of friendship" or Cadences' lasting peace in the Crystal Empire.

More interesting, however, is Sombra's backstory. Sombra is shown to rule with an "iron hoof" and to manipulate his subjects by using their own fears to torment them into submission. This type of behavior is typical of an usurper. Think about it, the Crystal Empire used be good before he took over, and Sombra even locked away the crystal heart so a "rightful ruler" could never return to use it against him. Sombra must be an usurper, and if so, must have started off as some guard pony or close confidant to the previous ruler before becoming corrupted by his own lust for power.

Also, Sombra and the Crystal Empire were most likely banished by Celestia, Luna, and possibly Star Swirl sometime before Discord appeared. If so, this begs the question as to Celestia, Luna, and Star Swirl's true motives behind stopping Sombra and causing the Crystal Empire to vanish without a trace. Could Sombra and Star Swirl have of history between them, and would there been some epic battle between Celestia, Luna, Star Swirl and Sombra? Only time will tell.
