1- They actually acknowledged Fluttershy's squee sound effect in the show. Does that count as a fourth wall break? 2- Not one, but two episodes with Zecora in a row. So glad they tried writing for her again. 3- Meadowbrook's mask is based off of the plague doctor masks worn in the era of the bubonic plague. The actual ones look a lot scarier. 4- Fluttershy almost lived her dream of being a tree.
This episode is arguably, in my opinion, one of the darkest episodes of MLP. The reason is because of the disease, Swamp Fever. How it infects and kills individuals by slowly turning them into trees that spreads the disease. That is just so dark. It makes you think that there are hordes of these trees that were once ponies or any other creature. How a lot of these trees make up much of the Everfree Forrest were once something else. And the thought of all these countless victims of the disease turning into tree, never being able to talk, or move ever again. And who knows, who knows whether they even keep their memories or consciousness when turned into a tree. But I say no, they went with everything else. And what happened to them after they turn into trees afterwards. How they could've been cut down to make into wood, and you're left to your imagination on what they'd turn them into. When you think about it, it's sounds worse then death. What do you say about that?
Yeah I agree, it was definitely scary! And distinct enough for kids to think on and worry with the lesson too!; I would've felt the same when watching as a kid. Hopefully we don't have any similar disturbing diseases in our swamps D:
ed: also Flutter's distress was warranted omg! but also agree with the lesson
Not only that, but they can't help but infect other ponies, whether they like it or not, being a cause for them to share this gruesome fate :q But I don't think that all the trees in the Everfree Forest are that, just the ones on the Hayseed Swamps.
8:04 You have a good memory. When we first met Starlight in Our Town, she claimed the Staff of Sameness was "one of the great Mage Meadowbrook's nine enchanted items".
Did anyone else notice in that episode with Starlight's village, Twilight says "I haven't studied Eastern unicorns as much as I should have" and in this episode Meadowbrook is said to be an "ancient sorceress" and Twilight studied her at Celestia's school for gifted unicorns. All the little hints and references to her suggest that Meadowbrook is a unicorn and can use magic but when we actually see her, she's an earth pony?
@@DarthSylar12 Starlight Glimmer claimed that her Staff of Sameness was one of the 9 enchanted items of Mage Meadowbrook, but Twilight said that she only read about 8, so the 9th one was dubious to her. And as it turned out later, she was right, because the Staff of Sameness was just a piece of wood Starlight found in the desert ;)
CinCoutMagus she was also called an Eastern Unicorn, when that descriptions fits Mistmane, but Mage Meadowbrook does seem associated with objects and I believe it was 8 not nine, and none were a staff.
Coughing bubbles, confusion, sneezing lightning and eventually turning into a tree - I wonder if Swamp Fever was created (either on purpose or not) by Discord long before he wreaked havoc on Equestria
If so, then I bet he’d be especially devastated if it had succeeded in turning Fluttershy into a tree. Then again, being Discord, he could probably just snap his fingers and completely reverse the effects of the disease (especially if it was indeed his creation).
This is yet another episode that makes me admire Fluttershy. She was very persistent when it came down to saving Zecora from a grim fate. Even though she needed to get some rest for her own sake, I still respect Fluttershy for going through these lengths for a friend. Of course, there’s also the matter of the cute and funny moments from Fluttershy and Twilight in this episode. You can’t go wrong with that. Overall, this is a great episode in my opinion.
I wonder how many people who watch this episode think about the fact that in just the initial sweeping shot we see at least eight different trees blooming with the cursed blossoms that turn ponies into more of them. Think about that, and then think about how far Twilight and Fluttershy must have traveled to reach Hayseed Swamp where Swamp Fever also showed up. Now take all this, and really think about it. Exactly how thoroughly does Swamp Fever permeate the world these characters inhabit?
Also, a terminal illness would be a blessing compared to Swamp Fever. Think about it. Not only is the afflicted effectively deceased when the disease fully runs its course, but the 'corpse' is yet one more outlet for the disease to spread. It's a fate worse than death, as what reasonable creature would wish to be a conduit for spreading something so foul?
Mage medowbrook was mentioned in the season 5 premier actually. That episode was pretty dark with that disease, and fluttershy should be happy, she wanted to be a tree, didn't she :P?
This is a great Fluttershy episode. Swamp fever is like COVID 19, Zecora was about to become a tree, Fluttershy was so courageous and determination and Twilight and Cattail are great supporters. Her dream almost came true about being a tree since Over a Barrel 🦄🦄🦄🦓🦓🦓💪💪💪🤒🤒🤒
Has anyone come up with a reason to explain why Mage meadowbrook is a earth pony instead of a unicorn yet??
Because the only reasons I could think of was since Meadowbrook almost always wore a mask some ponies may have just believed she was a unicorn that specialized in potions/medicine.
Or maybe the history of what pony race she was changed over time through word of mouth.
@@devonm042690 The weirdest thing about this retcon to me is that M.A. Larson originally wanted to name her Jasmine Flower, and if they had kept that name then none of this confusion would have even been necessary as Mage Meadowbrook could have been an entirely different character.
@@joshblackwell8632 Okay then, how about this? Meadowbrook was an ally of Starswirl, which means she was either alive during the pre-Equestrian era, or was born not long after the founding of Equestria. I think it's clear from how Celestia and Luna talk of Starswirl at the start of the Season Finale that Equestria was founded without Alicorns in power, despite what the play in the episode Hearth's Warming Eve shows. So Equestria would have had a council of the three tribes at the time of the founding, and things would have been old fashioned. Plus, Meadowbrook lived in a remote location, so she was almost a recluse. At the very least, she wouldn't have been known personally by anyone outside her community. However, her exploits of magic and healing did become famous, and given what I said about it being an old fashioned time, well people draw their own conclusions no matter what the era. So yeah, what you said, just taking the era into account which makes it more believable.
@@joshblackwell8632 Maybe it's because of preconceived notions that unicorns are the only ones good at magical stuff. I mean, ponies used to be freaked out by Zecora since she seemed "unnatural," so maybe that bias worked its way into Meadowbrook's legend like how you said.
In The Cutie Map Part 2, Twilight called Mage Meadowbrook an eastern unicorn. Based on that, I've reached the conclusion that the show staff retconned the original concept of Mage Meadowbrook into Mistmane.
Reminder, after S7 finale you NEED to do "My Little Pony: The Movie" (2017), It is 100% cannon. You will be confused during S8 if you don't watch it. NOTE: it was written and/or being written somewhere between mid-season 4 to early season 5, yet takes place between season 7 and 8, so they act like the characters from seasons 4 and 5 not seasons 7 and 8, including a lack of continuity and character development from those later seasons .
Did anyone else notice that, in the Season 5 premiere, when the mane 6 are stuck in Starlight's village and Twilight is trying to figure out if Meadowbrook had 8 magical items or 9, she says "I haven't studied Eastern unicorns as much as I should have" and in this episode Meadowbrook is said to be an "ancient sorceress" kind of implying she could use magic AND Twilight studied her at Celestia's school for gifted unicorns, these details always bothered me because they all suggest that she's a unicorn, Twilight even said it herself, but when we actually see Meadowbrook, she's an earth pony 🤔
I realize that it's just a plot device here (no pun intended), but I still don't get why Zecora had to struggle with her tail tied to a branch to get the moss at the start of the episode when Fluttershy could have easily just flown over and gotten it herself.
