In fact, there is evidence that proves that Starlight was keeping a close eye on the Mane 6 in order to get revenge on them, especially considering her brief appearances in this episode and Amending Fences plus the theory that she might be the shadow silhouette with the mysterious voice in Apple Bloom's dream from the Bloom and Gloom episode.
If this is true, then this is how the events happened:
Starlight runs away swearing revenge on Twilight and her friends after they managed to help the ponies from the village get back their cutie marks.
From there, Starlight decides to investigate the Mane 6 more closely, which includes knowing where they go, who surrounds them and why they are so important in Equestria. In her attempt to get revenge on them, she begins tormenting those ponies that are very close to the Mane 6 and her first victim turns out to be Apple Bloom, whom she manages to torment by getting into her dream and making her not want to have her cutie mark.
When Twilight goes to Canterlot to apologize to her old friends, Starlight is seen at the donut restaurant keeping an eye on Twilight, and considering that Twilight was in the Canterlot library, perhaps Starlight managed to find out where the library was in case if she needed to go to get information that could help her with her revenge plan. Then, she continues spying on the Mane 6 and when they are all together with Discord recreating the scene of how they spent the day with him, Pinkie mentions time traveling and because she was spying so close to them, Starlight hears about the time traveling thing, which gives her the idea of how she can get revenge on Twilight and her friends. Then, Starlight decides to go to the Canterlot library to do some research on time traveling and discovers Star Swirl's time travel spell and manages to get a copy of it.
After getting this information, Starlight thinks that she needs to discover one more detail in order to make sure that her revenge against the Mane 6 works out perfectly and that is discovering why they are so important in Equestria. Now in the Cutie Re-Mark episode, Twilight makes a presentation at Celestia's school about the meaning of cutie marks and it is seen that in the audience Starlight is present and when Twilight mentions how she and her friends managed to get their cutie marks at the same time without even knowing each other thanks to Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom, implying that they were destined to be friends in order to spread the magic of friendship throughout Equestria, Starlight discovers the reason why the Mane 6 are so important in Equestria, which becomes the last puzzle piece of her plan: To travel back in time in order to change it by preventing Rainbow Dash from performing her first Sonic Rainboom as well as to avoid the Mane 6 from getting their cutie marks so they don't get to know each other and by doing that, she will also be able to change the present and future.
Discord is a character who's personality really depends on who writes him. Almost every Discord-episode is written by someone else. The only episodes which are written by the same person are two later episodes in Season 6 and Season 8 respectivly (written by Nick Confalone) and two Season 9 episodes (non of which are really "Discord-episodes" as while they give Discord a lot of screentime, its always with someone else) written by Michael Vogel. This gives his character quite the amount on inconsistency which, considering he's the Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony, actually makes sense as "inconsistency" is a part of chaos. In some episodes, he is the teacher with good intentions but a quetionable approach to teaching lessons. In others, he's a jerk but with a heart of gold. And in his worst episode, which comes later on, he's an entitled, selfish, childish asshole you just want to punsh. The only real consistency is that if he wouldn't be the Spirit of Chaos and Disharmony, he'd be the Spirit of Overconfidence and Narcissism for sure. However, this also means that his reception by fans changes from episode to episode.

Yeah, it's a true classic :> I love it too. (To the point that when I was a kid, I went to the local public library and borrowed all books they got on Relativity and time, planning to build a time machine :D Obviously I didn't build it, but I learnt a lot about Relativity at that time, which was a pretty solid achievement as for a 10-years-old :J ) If you like that kind of stuff, though, there's one great anime about time travel: "Steins;Gate". I consider it to be the best time travel story after "Back To The Future". In case you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend you to watch it ;)

In all honesty, this episode is my least favorite of the season. All the while, I pretty much felt the same way as Twilight did about feeling left out on what her friends and Discord took part in while she was organizing her books and it kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Sure there were a few chuckle worthy moments here and there, but that still didn’t change the way how I felt about the episode as a whole.

She felt left out because her friends kept bringing up jokes that she didn’t understand because she wasn’t there. Instead of realizing that her feelings were being hurt by this, they kept laughing and saying, “it was funny if you were there”. This was rude and insensitive for ponies that are supposed to be her friends. To top it off, they never apologized to her or got mad at Discord for manipulating them. The mane 5 felt out of character in this episode.
Well, that kinda means that the writers did a good job in reproducing that feeling, didn't they? ;J It isn't my favourite episode too, but definitely not the worst either, since it tackles with some interesting philosophical questions. (In case you wondering, there's only two episodes in this season that I consider terrible: the Yaks episode, and the one in which Pinkie knows. The rest of them are great episodes, so season 5 is definitely one of my favourites.)

This was a good episode. Really good character development of twilight and we also can see that discord is better friends with the rest of the mane 6 and not only fluttershy.

It doesn’t do anything in particular that makes me hate it, I just think that Discord comes off more annoying than funny, and the general concept of the episode just feels really bland to me. I enjoy discord when he’s being funny, but when he’s just being a nuisance and nothing else I really wish he wasn’t there.

I have a strong dislike for this episode. Twilight’s friends were absolute jerks to her by making her feel left out and rubbing her face in it by saying “You had to be there” all the time. Twilight had every right to be suspicious because she knew that none of them, except Fluttershy, would have normally had nothing to do with Discord. Plus, she was not jealous that she didn’t get to spend the weekend with her friends. The writers didn’t understand was jealousy was. How would you feel if your friends all of a sudden had an inside joke that they refused to tell you what it was about and why it was so funny and they talked about it 24/7? You’d feel left out and miserable. This came across as a slap in the face to Twilight fans. Let’s not forget that her friends never apologized to her or got mad at Discord for manipulating them. They just a good laugh about it at the end. WTF.
I honestly have no idea why this episode gets so much hate. It certainly doesn’t deserve to be the 2nd-lowest-rated episode of the entire series on IMDb, that’s for sure. That “honor” should go to a certain other Discord episode in season 8…

Sure he was an ass, and I very much dislike how he's characterized, but making a point on inclusivity and assumptions is a whole lot tamer than actively excluding someone to then gloat about it to their face.
