With its combination of 1970s sensibility and strength in the 1990s, PIEDI NUDI has been perhaps one of the darkest, toughest bands of the RPI scene over the last two decades. Their music is a raw but powerful amalgam of raucous rhythms and aggressive melodies. During a relatively short career, they released three studio albums, and had extensive live activity that included performing on ProgDay in '98.
They released their self-titled debut album in 1994 with a cast consisting of Mirko Schiesaro (vocals), Nicola Gardinale (guitar, backing vocals), Cristian Chinaglia (keyboards), Simone Bighetti (bass, 12-string guitar) and Carlo Bighetti (drums, flute, backing
vocals). The album is dominated by toxic nu-metal guitar riffs, and the songs feature many twists and turns, which makes some intricate music although the overall effect can sometimes sound a little fuzzy.
Singer Mirko Schiesaro left before recording their second album "Creazione" (1995), so drummer Carlo Bighetti took over the lead vocals.
Enrico Barchetta (horn) is engaged, although the horn is used very sparingly and does not add much to the overall effect. In general, however, "Creazione" contains a lighter and adventurous set of songs, if the results are somewhat disjointed. Once again, Gardinale's guitar breaks through much of the material even though keyboards play a more prominent role this time around.
Until their last album "Eclissi" (1998), they expanded to include a six-piece track with the arrival of regular singer Mirko Andreasi, the third vocalist on as many albums.
This release witnessed a return to the heavy sound of the first album with some truly thunderous drumming; the production is superb and actually the debut sounds tame compared to "Eclissi". The songs are still on the complex side although they tend to flow better than those on "Creazione"; overall, music is less fragmented with fewer seizures and beginnings.
The band's first album and "Eclissi" are still available, although "Creazione" is currently
Deleted. In 1999, they played their last gig when they supported IL BALLETTO DI BRONZO in Rome, and after that they fell apart. Nicola Gardinale founded NIC-G AND THE MOGSY in 2004, which subsequently released an album of blues and funk material. PIEDI NUDI is recommended for those who like their RPI on the hard side, and perhaps prog-metal lovers.
