I guess Luna wasn't seen in S1 because she thinks ponyfolk were too scared of her so she stays away as to not cause a scene. She has two designs because they didn't really think her through, and they had to change her to be "scarier" for Luna Eclipsed to work, Jayson Thiessen mentions this in leaked animatic notes for the episode. Basically, S1 luna was a mistake :^ )
