I'm so glad that this was a virtual machine. Destroying a regular copy of Windows 98 would just be so devastating, it's a classic piece of software! Iconic even. Imagine destroying such a marvel
Like others have said, it blows my mind how resilient it is in contrast to the Windows versions of today. Windows 10 isn't a patch on 98.
I have explanantion why Windows still booted after many attempts of deleting registry. You probably seen SOME deleted registry keys appearing again. Windows thinks this is first boot and then it installs some registry from a copy somewhere. Many registry keys are installed ONLY on first boot. Enderman deleted user registry key and after second boot it setup the user. When he deleted driver registry keys it started recognizing devices similar to first boot
"con" is a system reserved name and in earlier versions of Windows it lead to instant crash, because Windows didn't know how ti handle this behaviour and pretty much failed. Later Windows actually did know that and they implemented various methods of dealing with this issue. First it asks for program to open with, but it never opens actually (eighter causes BSOD, or returns an error and lives happily long next), the other actually instantly errors this out and that's it. Earlier Windows even crashed when you tried to create a file or folder with reserved names (note: file must be extensionless to cause BSOD, otherwise it is actually a different name and that's not reserved). From what I know, con and aux are reserved names. There may be more...

0 likesI have explanantion why Windows still booted after many attempts of deleting registry.

0 likesHow come opening “con” on windows 7 just brings up a box to choose what to open it with, but on win98, it generates a BSOD?
0 likesReplies (1)

You may have a corrupted ISO. This is a very common thing to happen.
