This randomly reminded me of the time when I tried to “help” my grandpa download a random “PC Repair Kit” from the internet onto his Windows XP desktop (mind you, I was 12 at the time, and we had just gotten it back from the repair shop after it got infected with ransomware, so I genuinely just wanted to help keep his computer safe so he wouldn’t have to pay to get it repaired again).
Apparently it marked at least 600 items as potential viruses, many of which were literally our personal documents and photos. Thankfully, my grandpa was a lot more tech-savvy than I initially gave him credit for, and he figured out right away that it was a scam and uninstalled it.
He got rid of that computer years ago now, but even to this day I still feel guilty about it.

I've tried soo many things, but there's some virus on my computer that makes explorer crap on itself every so often, and i still can't get rid of it, so now i think I'll just buy a windows install disk so i can get rid of it and in case my idiocy kicks in and i need to get rid of another virus in the future.
Same, I remember restarting my computer and it came up with a logo of the anti-virus program along with 'fixing your computer of malware'. Dad was not impressed when I said the anti-virus was stopping me from playing my games

i oddly had one of these viruses on my old mini laptop as a kid. The weirdest part was that it hijacked the background and said something like "if you want to protect your family, your friends, etc. buy the license" or some shit like that with a bunch of ones and zeros on a red or blue background. i just shrugged it off and continued my life like normal and took my dog for a walk on a warm winter day. about a month later i came back to the laptop and all the files were magically gone from the virus. it deleted itself or some shit.
I remember I was infected with this in 2010/2011, or maybe a very simillar variant of this rouge with just a different year in the name. The funniest thing is that that computer was running XP with Norton Internet Security from that period. And Norton "stopped a network attack" which apparently was somehow the injection of this rogue, but it happened again after like a minute and it got past. Of course it was all my fault after all, because I was 10 and I was playing flash games. Or at least that's what my father thought.

And I regret I wasn't that much into computers back then. I'd love to grab a sample, if it's that rare.
We had this virus in the computer lab at middle school. Except there wasn't a "Dismiss" option for when it popped up its "Threat detected" window. You couldn't run anything: no Explorer (except for the Desktop process), no CMD, no RegEdit, no Task Manager... Anyways, the IT admin asked me to help him clean the virus form the lab machines; he gave me a printout of instructions to do it. Turns out, someone disassembled the virus, and there was a hidden "license key" that you needed to type in the "Activation" tab and you could then run programs. From then on, it was: launch RegEdit, remove ".exe" association, remove autostart, then remove the malware's EXE. As far as I remember, it even dropped itself into %AppData% or smth. I wanted to grab a copy of that virus to extract the resources from it (it had a really cool window, you see), but I don't think I did (or at least I don't think I have it anymore). I might have the printout in the bottom of some binder though.
I am just creating a joke program that opens Windows Explorer, Task Manager, Internet Explorer and more, and also spams notifications and then restarts the PC.
@@adriantheo7654 scan isn't that simple, if you write a simple antivirus, you can have a database of malicious code, but that won't help with polymorphic viruses, so you'll need a sandbox which is also not very simple, you'll have to emulate the windows syscalls made by virus, ideally not only syscalls but the entire x86 architecture, which is a lot of work. Mainly creating an antivirus isn't something a single person can afford, because of limitaitons as lack of (customer of developer) awareness it will be hard to datamine viruses for heuristic search and red-flag behaviour in sandboxed environment

It reminds me of one time a vista laptop (that is still working till this day btw) got like 1000 viruses all at once while i was in a friend's house and my mother called me asking me to help her understand what was going on and i could hear my father just grumping out in the background.
So i had to come back home early than usual because if not he could might literally tried to buy the thing, because when i came home there it was the laptop with this kind of "thing" sitting in the desktop throwing "potential risks" like every 4 minutes, something was getting infected, compromised or just plain broken because of some unknown reason that even the software that was specificly meant to fix the issue didnt knew what it was, of course it didnt knew until you gave him some bucks that is, if you payed then that's when the program could let you know what was the issue.
So i did some research and the real problem was the program itself, didnt knew about the definition of Rogue Programs before but that day i had a crash course, if i just let the program sit in the system long enough it could had gotten worse and worse, like after a couple of hours it could had started doing fake BSOD's then blocking or stoping servicies altogether, after that it could literally start doing real BSOD's because it could start corrupting system functions because it wasnt essencially well programmed to begin with, and then the system could be a total mess and you only way of "fixing it" could be lending money to the "developers"
Then i just searched how to remove it, and with some help of malwarebytes, some registry editing and some manual deleting and a restart the thing was totally obliterated, if it wasnt for me searching the program on google and then reading about it i could just had done massive damage to the system by just letting the program in the system long enough.

I got a pair of headphones a few months back by this company I had never heard before, called Xiberia. Anyways, they didn’t produce any sound when I plugged them in, so I went to their website where they wanted me to download a clearly fake sound enhancer for my computer, they changed the nickname of the site to Siberia, it didn’t surprise me when my Anti-virus kicked me out of the site. So don’t get those awful headphones.

Pretty much the whole point of fake antivirus software is to scare people into giving them money. Basically, praying on the naïvety of novice users.
I worked at a local computer repair shop when these things were all the rage and, from talking to our customers who were fooled, I'd say they were able to trick enough people that they were able to rake in quite a bit of cash from the scam.

Had a customer get one of these fake AV's. it wanted a credit card, so she entered her credit card number it. it said it was wrong, so she entered another one, it said that one was wrong too, so then she entered her husband's credit card LOL ... I'm sure it was saying wrong just to gobble up as many cards as it could.
You could atleast name it like MalwareFinder or MalTop not antivirus like look at these names: Avast, MalwareBytes, BitDefender, AVG, Then you got freaking antivirus.

@@thickskulls A virtual machine is when you create an enclosed operating system in your current one. For example, I can run a windows 7 virtual machine inside did my windows 10 operating system. When you create one it's completely isolated from your main pc so whatever you do in it can't interact with your main os (there at e a few limited interactions you can do but they don't break the isolation at all) so let's say I wanted to just install this malware in a virtual machine, it'll only infect it and not my main os and I'll be able to just delete the virtual machine when I'm done. This is basically what I mean when I say people download these things to just tinker and study them, they won't have to worry about their main os being infected. And yeah, AV 2010 would just be annoying in 2020 but as shown in the video it CAN still be destructive if you don't know what you're doing with it.
@@thickskulls Well from what he said in the video a good portion of the malware won't work being how old it is so I really can't judge how it compares to the MEMZ virus, it's still destructive but not as bad as it would've been back in 2010. That being said though, he mainly gives download links for people who just wanna tinker with them in virtual machines and clearly says they're viruses multiple times in his videos but I do understand your concern about them just giving malware out.

Some people like to study how they work (like the person making these videos) I personally don't, but i do have a friend who loves to break malware down in VM's for the fun of it.
I recently discovered something intereresting. Windows XP still has the old Windows Media Player from Windows 95(press Win+R and type mplayer2 and press Enter). Also, Windows XP still includes Program Manager from Windows 3.1 (at least until Service Pack 1, the one in Service Pack 2 and later is a useless stub). You can go to http://chorusofone.no-ip.org/computerstuff/Progman-XP.html (disclaimer: not my site, I found it via Google) and download Program Manager for Service Pack 2 and later as well as the File Manager from Windows 3.1 for all XP versions. If you want to replace the nonfunctional progman.exe from Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later (located in system32 folder) with a functional version of Program Manager you need to do it outside of Windows (for example in WinPE, make sure to also delete dllcache) otherwise it will change it back to the nonfunctional version. I'm pretty sure you can use Program Manager as your shell (instead of explorer.exe) on Windows XP if you change a registry key (I don't remember which one). Idk if you can do this on Windows XP x64 (you should be able to, Windows XP's progman.exe is 32-bit).

The weirdest part was that it hijacked the background and said something like "if you want to protect your family, your friends, etc. buy the license" or some shit like that with a bunch of ones and zeros on a red or blue background. i just shrugged it off and continued my life like normal and took my dog for a walk on a warm winter day. about a month later i came back to the laptop and all the files were magically gone from the virus. it deleted itself or some shit.
12 likesI remember I was infected with this in 2010/2011, or maybe a very simillar variant of this rouge with just a different year in the name. The funniest thing is that that computer was running XP with Norton Internet Security from that period. And Norton "stopped a network attack" which apparently was somehow the injection of this rogue, but it happened again after like a minute and it got past.

3 likesWe had this virus in the computer lab at middle school. Except there wasn't a "Dismiss" option for when it popped up its "Threat detected" window. You couldn't run anything: no Explorer (except for the Desktop process), no CMD, no RegEdit, no Task Manager...
5 likesAnyways, the IT admin asked me to help him clean the virus form the lab machines; he gave me a printout of instructions to do it. Turns out, someone disassembled the virus, and there was a hidden "license key" that you needed to type in the "Activation" tab and you could then run programs. From then on, it was: launch RegEdit, remove ".exe" association, remove autostart, then remove the malware's EXE. As far as I remember, it even dropped itself into %AppData% or smth.
I wanted to grab a copy of that virus to extract the resources from it (it had a really cool window, you see), but I don't think I did (or at least I don't think I have it anymore). I might have the printout in the bottom of some binder though.

1 like@@adriantheo7654 scan isn't that simple, if you write a simple antivirus, you can have a database of malicious code, but that won't help with polymorphic viruses, so you'll need a sandbox which is also not very simple, you'll have to emulate the windows syscalls made by virus, ideally not only syscalls but the entire x86 architecture, which is a lot of work. Mainly creating an antivirus isn't something a single person can afford, because of limitaitons as lack of (customer of developer) awareness it will be hard to datamine viruses for heuristic search and red-flag behaviour in sandboxed environment

9 likesIt reminds me of one time a vista laptop (that is still working till this day btw) got like 1000 viruses all at once while i was in a friend's house and my mother called me asking me to help her understand what was going on and i could hear my father just grumping out in the background.
2 likesSo i had to come back home early than usual because if not he could might literally tried to buy the thing, because when i came home there it was the laptop with this kind of "thing" sitting in the desktop throwing "potential risks" like every 4 minutes, something was getting infected, compromised or just plain broken because of some unknown reason that even the software that was specificly meant to fix the issue didnt knew what it was, of course it didnt knew until you gave him some bucks that is, if you payed then that's when the program could let you know what was the issue.
So i did some research and the real problem was the program itself, didnt knew about the definition of Rogue Programs before but that day i had a crash course, if i just let the program sit in the system long enough it could had gotten worse and worse, like after a couple of hours it could had started doing fake BSOD's then blocking or stoping servicies altogether, after that it could literally start doing real BSOD's because it could start corrupting system functions because it wasnt essencially well programmed to begin with, and then the system could be a total mess and you only way of "fixing it" could be lending money to the "developers"
Then i just searched how to remove it, and with some help of malwarebytes, some registry editing and some manual deleting and a restart the thing was totally obliterated, if it wasnt for me searching the program on google and then reading about it i could just had done massive damage to the system by just letting the program in the system long enough.

I remember there being a website that had styles awfully similar to Windows Explorer, expect it had a "scanner" included.. not sure if that was for this antivirus. It somehow kept popping up... and unfortunately, I downloaded it. It scared the heck out of me. Parents had to take the computer to a guy that knew how to fix it (I wish I did at the time but I was only about 9) and were not happy lol.

So don’t get those awful headphones.

@@thickskulls A virtual machine is when you create an enclosed operating system in your current one. For example, I can run a windows 7 virtual machine inside did my windows 10 operating system. When you create one it's completely isolated from your main pc so whatever you do in it can't interact with your main os (there at e a few limited interactions you can do but they don't break the isolation at all) so let's say I wanted to just install this malware in a virtual machine, it'll only infect it and not my main os and I'll be able to just delete the virtual machine when I'm done. This is basically what I mean when I say people download these things to just tinker and study them, they won't have to worry about their main os being infected.

0 likes@@thickskulls Well from what he said in the video a good portion of the malware won't work being how old it is so I really can't judge how it compares to the MEMZ virus, it's still destructive but not as bad as it would've been back in 2010. That being said though, he mainly gives download links for people who just wanna tinker with them in virtual machines and clearly says they're viruses multiple times in his videos but I do understand your concern about them just giving malware out.

Also what doesn't make sense about studying malware? 0 likesI recently discovered something intereresting. Windows XP still has the old Windows Media Player from Windows 95(press Win+R and type mplayer2 and press Enter). Also, Windows XP still includes Program Manager from Windows 3.1 (at least until Service Pack 1, the one in Service Pack 2 and later is a useless stub). You can go to http://chorusofone.no-ip.org/computerstuff/Progman-XP.html (disclaimer: not my site, I found it via Google) and download Program Manager for Service Pack 2 and later as well as the File Manager from Windows 3.1 for all XP versions. If you want to replace the nonfunctional progman.exe from Windows XP Service Pack 2 and later (located in system32 folder) with a functional version of Program Manager you need to do it outside of Windows (for example in WinPE, make sure to also delete dllcache) otherwise it will change it back to the nonfunctional version. I'm pretty sure you can use Program Manager as your shell (instead of explorer.exe) on Windows XP if you change a registry key (I don't remember which one). Idk if you can do this on Windows XP x64 (you should be able to, Windows XP's progman.exe is 32-bit).
