That was pretty good. I especially loved the summary of their evening. I made a child, I took a nap, I baked cookies, I played a nice game of cards, I was treated to a private concert, I was running for hours, I was fainted through most of it. Priceless! XD
I've got to say, after all that... I think I need to check out this tenacious tail tidy Does it really give my tail that care no other product can? If so, I'm sold!
This was a well written and well thought out episode/audio play and it deserves a well written and well thought out response. But this is a comment on YouTube, so I make no promises, lol.
First of all, I actually listened to part of this audio play on my car speakers, so it felt like I was listening to a genuine radio performance. And I must say as a fan of Rabbit Ears Radio and similar radio plays of old, it was very good and felt professionally done. That being said I would love to give you my thoughts on it if you care to read them.
I always prefer hearing bad news first before hearing the good news, and conversely I like telling others what can be approved upon before showering them with praise for what I loved. So let’s get on with it
What I didn’t like: 1. The audio wasn’t the best. It was very scratchy and hard to hear many of the voices. Of course you could argue that it was part of the creepy atmosphere and gave way to the illusion that it was an old 40s/50s radio broadcast being played on a record. My theory is that not every one of your voice actors had the best recording equipment, so instead of having some voices sound better than others, you just edited the whole recording to make it sound the same. I noticed in your previous episodes how some voices were clearer than others, and I just assumed it was because they used different audio equipment. But because this was a radio show with no visuals, you wanted the sound quality to stay consistent. Am I correct in this assumption? If not, could you explain what the actual intention was?
2. Rainbow Dash, Spike, and Applejack have very similar sounding voices. I know that they are all voiced by the same person, and very well might I add, but still it is hard to tell them apart sometimes. I consider Spike to be the base voice, with Rainbow Dash being pitched a little higher, and Applejack (attempting) a little southern twang. This is less apparent in the show thanks to the visuals, but here it was a lot more difficult. I’m thankful that as soon as you switched from one character to another you had someone address them by name. (P.S. My favorite performance from EyesofEstranged15 was his take on Nightmare Moon. The voice is also very similar to the others, but with a lot more energy behind it. I loved it the second I heard it! Hopefully she makes a return in the future.)
3. Never heard of Jeff the Killer. This wasn’t your fault, it’s just that I don’t read creepy pasta, so every joke Rainbow made fell a little flat. Ironically, I also wish she was facing a better slasher killer such as Jason or Leather Face, or even Slenderman. I’m sure there were also a lot of other references I didn’t get, but I wouldn’t know because I didn’t get them, lol.
4. Didn’t like the arrest ending and thought it was a little harsh. I know you are just setting up for the sequel, (Which I am looking forward to by the way), but I felt bad for “The Master” and everyone just came off as unlikable at the very end. If it was trying to be funny, I wasn’t laughing. OK, maybe I laughed a little after I realized this wasn’t real, but it just seemed so believable at the time that I could feel his torment and sorrow. Well, I suppose that’s what happens when you get emotionally invested in characters. His vow at revenge made it all worth it though. I can’t wait!
5. Sometimes it felt like the voice actors were trying too hard, like the butler. Just have fun with it!
What I enjoyed: LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE!
Literally, I could go on and on about every little detail I enjoyed, but it would make this list even longer than it is. My absolute favorite was the use of Fred FredBurger. Pinkie and he were hilarious together. I found myself chanting “Fred FredBurger, Fred FredBurger” as soon as I heard his voice. Actually, this episode reminded me of The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. It also reminded me A LOT of that one episode of Rugrats called “Ghost Story”, where they take turns telling a story that takes place in a haunted mansion, and as each person gets their turn they add themselves to the story. It’s also filled monsters, trials, and challenges. If I could choose a song to describe this episode, I would go with “It’s a B Movie” from The Brave Little Toaster. (If you haven’t heard it, I recommend listening to it immediately after reading this.)
So those are my thoughts for now. I’d like to hear yours.
P.S. Is this the longest comment you’ve ever gotten?
+SuperWorldJumper This was our first attempt at one of these so we went with a vocal effect that was supposed to make the audio sound like it was coming from an old radio play. Unfortunately it seemed to just make our "s" sounds a lot harsher. But, we learned from our mistake. This is the first and only time we'll try it.
As for the arrest ending, the Master was completely fucked over. That was our intention. Our characters aren't the most empathetic bunch. You'll learn more as you go along, but life has generally made them all quite... 'Cold' would be the best word to describe it. We're still surprised that people like our Twilight as much as they do because she is very much intended to be an unlikable bitch in the beginning of the series.
Will the Master's story end in our second Halloween special with a sad or happy ending? We won't spoil it for you, but we will say he does at the very least get a chance to fight back. Unlike today when he was taken by surprise.
Another worth mentioning is that one of the themes we like to explore in our series is how much damage a single mistake can do. And as I'm sure you know, basically everyone makes little mistakes on a day to day basis. It's a horrifying though really. There's no telling the ripples we've created with nothing more than saying the wrong thing at the wrong time...
Fred Fredburger was one of our favorite parts of this as well! Everyone on the team knew who he was, and we all vividly remembered his debut episode from a childhood's! Seriously, that memory reigns supreme in our minds as one of the best unexpected moments from 00's animation! It's right up there with seeing Spongebob's "eager face" from the 'Band Geeks' episode for the first time XD
And yes, we believe this is the longest comment we've ever gotten :p
I had the same problem with Applejack and Spike, though I found it easy enough to differentiate Rainbow Dash. Nightmare Moon's voice at the end was by far my favorite voice acting in the series, it was just really well done.
I had no problem with them arresting the master, that was what they were sent to do in the first place. He broke his promise anyway. :P
I never even saw in of the Billy and Mandy episodes with Fred Fredburger, and I found his part to be great. Pinkie is just so sweet.
The one other thing I think this could be approved on is to add some narration to fill in some details. The sound design was great, but it only goes so far. For many of the characters I have no idea what they look like, which is important because it's only clear if some of the characters were actually physically present in some scenes or if they were just a sort of disembodied voice.
I liked basicly everything, I mean the sound had that old radio quality, but everything else was incredibly well done. of course I am that one person who had no idea who any of these cartoon characters are, but I liked how it anyway. I also have to agree with spike that everyone else got the easy stuff, but hey, it's spike, who really cares. okay, I just felt like I had to make a comment like the other 79 people who did. by the way, keep up the good work! this is a really good series.😊😊😊💖 ok, now I'm done. please remember me if the gets lost in the 80 comments. bye.💖
R.D.s speech, about Jeff's "story", sound like she's quoting {nearly}, word-for-word, someone's real life reaction, to read, the Creepypasta, almost as if someone was venting, their frustration, of the Creepypasta, in a way, at the main character/villain, I approve while being a bit concerned, a lot, of things.
Haha, that's right! At one point all 3 of the CMC's voices were gonna be based on a Homestar Runner character, but that idea has since been scrapped. Still enjoy doing AB's voice as Homestar though, and it's actually had an impact on her character development to come.
Ah, just working my way through this series. Posted that before I listened to the rest, but most of the references were pretty explicit. Fredfred Burger is probably the best monster. The King of the HIll reference was not subtle but it was somewhat obscure. Good Hank only appeared in what, like 3 episodes? And in the end was totally forgotten by everyone, apparently including his mother as her last appearance failed to even mention him. *ahem*, sorry, that one just bugs me.
Pyramid head... I gotta play that game at some point. And what was that creepypasta? I had not even heard of that one.
Jeff the Killer. It's the "go to sleep" image. Even if you haven't read the pasta you've probably seen the image. There's a lot of creepypastas based off of him, but the two earliest ones I found are both fucking awful.
Here's one. There was another one I read that was much less dramatic where Jeff's bizarre appearance is accidentally self-inflicted, but I can't find it.
+isaiah “kaboose1313” rodriguez Exactly! It's whats left from a scrapped idea from when this series was being planned out. Originally all 3 of the CMC would have Homestar Runner character voices.
I had no idea Fluttershy's trial was a banshee until I saw the credits. Anyway, only disappointment was that was no shot outs to any actual 60s/70s Shock Rock acts like Arthur Brown, and that we didn't get to hear Pinhead's song.
So Rainbow Dash and the rest have done this before? How?
What happened to all the episodes after Episode 3? I'm in the process of reacting to them and I just finished episode 3, but now I don't see any of the other episodes on. Is there a glitch or a takedown notice going on?
+BubblegumArchives It is canon and it's important to set up next year's special which is very important to the plot. Sorry if audio plays aren't your thing, but we recommend giving it a try. We feel that without the constraints the episode footage puts on us we're able to write a better stories with these plays.
+Bubblefilms IMBONKKERS Clearly there is but one way to settle this. A duel to the death! Bubblefilms since you are the offended party you may choose your weapon first. Will you duel with pistol or sword?
The quality of the voices seems really bad to me. It hurts my ears to listen to it, which is a shame because I don't want to get lost in future stories/episodes.
Twilight torturing Victor was kinda the most horrifying of scenes in this......that sound.
