old thread but as a leftie, i recommend playing right handed anyways!! it's much easier to learn through tutorials and you have a broader range of things you can get
For a while, I REALLY wanted to learn how to play ukulele, but I always thought it was difficult. However, after watching this, I realized it wasn't as hard as it seemed, and even if it was, I absolutely loved this song, so I just HAD to learn it. Almost a year later, and I've learned, like, 25 songs at least. I think, without this video, I might not have learned how to play when I did.
+edenthepotato Thanks. I now have account to stock. Also, I feel inspired so I will now play my guitar for the first time in two months, thank you :))))
I realize this was three years ago but to anybody else just starting ukulele i would strongly advise that you start with something simple like riptide by Vance Joy. Absolutely smitten is much to difficult for someone just starting out. So yes I get that its tempting to just go for it but take it from me, start with something small first. :)
This was my first song around 4 years ago! It was a pain to learn but it actually got me to be able to strum better than my other ukulele playing peers
@Cheeto Wolf lmao yeah i'm now a semi-adept ukulele player because i've been playing almost every day for four years but in retrospect this was NOT the song to start out with lol
@NagiNagi Napao i Definitely suggest starting with something easier like anything on ukutabs.com because this song is Not for a beginner and i was just dumb
@Äden hahaha i am also leaening from there š i did try this out yesterday and i def couldn't do both playing and singing at the same time lol š i might try this one again after a few simpler songs š
Lol. This comment is pretty old but your still answering. Love it! Also I don't know how you managed to learn this as an absolute beginner. Props to you! Is there any chance you'll upload a cover of the song? :)
@Mrs. Dream i Also donāt know how i learned this back then lol i think i had a lot of time on my hands and nothing else to do. also iām not the most confident so covers are scary but... idk... maybe one day iāll get up the courage lol
+Anton Palmborg The A Sus 4 is an A Sus4 Add9, from what I can tell. That is the B she uses for the bassline travelling A, B[!], C#, E, D. Which is also why I think it is pretty important to stress the bass-notes in all the chords.
but a lot of the chords for her songs on there are also wrong, like I went on there for this song and it the only chord that she actually plays in the song is the a chord and it had several chords that didn't even sound right, though it is typically quite good for learning songs that aren't originally on the ukulele
The way I do it is slowing down the tempo and singing at a slow pace and then gradually getting faster until I've got the coordination right. Hope that helps you! :)
Memorise either the chords or the lyrics by heart and then add the other one in. The one you memorised will be planted in your brain and you'll be able to do it without even thinking
For me it works by singing lowly while I play. At first you lose the rythm or you slurr the lyrics and it can be frustrating but if you keep insisting your brain will catch up and be able to do both things at the same time
Just keep practicing - when I first learned riptide with the DDUDU pattern, it took me ages to finally be able to sing and play, but now I can do it easily! Practice really does help.
When you're all Uke'd out for the day and your fingers have hit their limit, practice singing the song on its own. When you have the lyrics and melody memorized it becomes much easier to sing along.
I've never been great at singing and playing but I think what helps the most for me at least is figure out what word you would be on when you switch to the next chord to help keep yourself on track
Oh my god , I just realised, the absolutely smitten riff is the intro for most of your videos and I'm so mind blown. By the way I love your videos, your voice and beautiful songs and am currently trying to learn to play them on my uke. <3
Five years after this video: I just got a uke, was practicing cords, immediately recognized A from Absolutely Smitten, and now itās the first song Iāve learned on the ukulele.
Would you mind remaking this except... slower and more detailed? I understand how to play the first three chords and what the rhythm is but I am butterfly confused on the rhythm of the last two chords, what order the chords are in for the chorus, and the ending... If you're able to that would be greatly appreciated!!! I love you so much, thanks! ā¤ļø
hi doddie, I love ur songs, you are so talented+ im just wondering what size your ukulele is or any other ukulele's you have had in the past. xxxx thanks xxxxx
This is just perfect, the first time I saw you was in toms video, I immediately became obsessed (obviously ;p ) ordered a ukelele saturday and hopefully it will be delivered today, and now you uploaded a how to, Just perfect ^^
tip for the hard mute part: you can try learning how to chuck ( i think thats what its called ) its like muting but you do it with your right hand. its basically strumming then instantly stoping the chord. theres a bunch of tutorials online for it. it gives pretty much the same sound as muting but its generally easier. Hope this helps.
I got a ukulele 12 years ago from hawaii, I never played it because it would NEVER stay in tune! Today, I learned that I just needed to screw them in tighter xD So, today was the first time I was ever able o play my uke, and this is the song I learned. Thanks Dodie!
Chords in order are: A major, B minor, C# minor, E major, D major. They have a slightly different names (except A major) because of the open strings but that's what they are called.
Jess Holley try using a plectrum/pick thingy. I can't strum to save my life but I found it a lot easier using one of them. It does tend to make the sound louder and harsher but it's very useful
jessie, strumming is a pain in the ass but with practice youāll get better. Iāve been playing for about 2 years and I still struggle. Just keep going at it!š
@Justin Lawrence It's the same strumming pattern with the same chords but you only strum each chord once and mute for the rest of the pattern. Sorry I'm bad at explaining
for future people who have soprano ukes, here's how to play the last 2 chords: the first one should have your middle finger on the fret right above the last fret (aka the 9th fret) and your index finger on the fret right below that (aka the 8th fret). for the last chord, just slide your fingers down 2 frets so your index finger is on the second dot (7th fret) and your index finger is right below it (6th fret)
What does Dodie have if it's not a soprano? And which kind sounds better and is easier to play? I'm buying a ukulele and I wanted to know the difference
Dodie's is a Concert. Concert is generally the main ukulele people use. Her uke has 18 frets (which i recommend because it gives more of playing ground to write/play songs) but you can get ones with 12 frets. But do do some research on ukuleles, recommend the brands Mahalo and kala/makala :)
Does it sound the same though? I'm thinking of getting a soprano ukelele but i'm afraid of it sounding way too different and similar to a darn toy ukelele :o
Soprano is a higher pitch like the classic 'ukulele sound' , Concert Is a bit louder, but relatively similar and in my opinion easier to play than a soprano cuz there's more space between the frets.
MovieGirl8 look up the difference on YouTube. The bigger the uke is the deeper the sound. The sound of a concert isnāt THAT deeper but itās noticeable if you have been playing for only a short amount of time.
I asked a ukulele for Christmas! But when my parents cant find iT i could also ask iT for my birthday in march! So i'm totally happy! ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
"If you have a dot" Ummm... well, you see.... I'm left handed, so all my instruments, bar my electric guitar, are right handed. I just get the strings flipped. So yes, I do have dots.... they're just on the bottom of the neck where they're useless and unhelpful XD
TheWolfAngel I have the same problem š both my guitar and uke are flipped so when I started learning this song I just had to take a white pen and improvise
Yeah, my acoustic and my ukulele are flipped. My guitar because it was my first so it was easier and cheaper, and my uke because have you ever seen a left-handed ukuele?? XD The only reason my electric is left-handed is because I wanted the cuts in the right place. Very hard to do solos when you can't reach the 25th fret :D
Question to anyone with guitar-to-uke experience: is it easy to cross over? I've played acoustic guitar for close to six years and plan on getting a ukulele sometime soon.
I agree :) I bought my uke (a sop) three days ago, it's nothing impressive and I only spent $25 but it serves me well and once I become even better I can upgrade.
I am now learning this on my signed rainbow uke by you and evan after seeing this performed live last night and crying my eyes out. I love you so much dodes!! <3
I was like "What freaking dots!?" until I remembered that I play the ukulele left-handed so it's essentially upside down and the dots are on the side facing away from me xD
And it's too late
I believe in fate! ;D
I'm absolutely smitten, I'll never let you go
I'LL NEVER LET YOU GOOOOOOOOowoooooooooahhhhhhajshdalkjd

I saw the thumbnail and I thought this was another YouTuber guess not.. Edit: I wasn't into your songs at first... Next you know I am replying Would You Be So Kind on YouTube and learned it on the ukulele... Now here I am šššš
Just finished coming home from Italy to Scotland on a bus, do I sleep? Not when there's a new Dodie video to watch of course. Yeah... I really need more sensible priorities
i would make a song on garageband and wouldn't know how to play the chords on guitar or ukulele (since they're all difficult) so when i play it live i have to change the progression
Someone please explain how to play the chord played at 2:23. I feel like I was with it up until that point but none of the combinations I am playing sound anything like that. Thanks!
I struggled so much too! But I'm pretty sure it's 4,5,3 and then 4 again. The change she does is quite hard so I just kinda did it using the normal strumming pattern. Hope that helps :)
Idk what the progression is I'm so confused can someone helppppp I wanna sing this to my bf because it makes me think of him and this is the first song I'm learning on the uku
the order of the chords it exactly how she showed it throughout the whole song, and the strumming pattern is DD UDU x3 DUDU UDU - like the basic D DU UDU but with an U between the first two downs. hope it's clear enough now! š»
Does anyone know how to do video comments? I really want to make a cover of it, but I'm not sure how to do a video comment! Do you just put the link of the video into the comment section? Any info would be really helpful :) thanks for reading!
Learning this while I'm sleepy is a bad idea but I'm still trying?? Like I want to learn it so bad but I also need sleep but I can only sleep when I'm able to play the song, at least kinda slow???
how do you strum that fast... I'm so confused I don't get how to strum with all fingers I've been using my index finger and thumb but whenever I strum as fast as you it sounds harsh and weird...
What kind of Uke do you have? Mine seems to be a bit smaller than yours. Also, are there other "normal notes" besides G C E and A? My hands are too small for E. XD tysm! I love your music!
I'm trying to learn this song on uke, and when I get to the higher chords, all I can hear is the g string note and it doesn't sound right and I don't like it. Help?
bgbrooklin As for methods? If you don't have a tuner, which is the quickest and easiest way, I suggest using a piano (or of you don't have a piano, there are plenty of free piano applications, I believe...) to tune. I'd use middle C as my reference point. The notes on a uke are as follows, from sting 1 to 4 (ground to ceiling--IF you're right handed): A E C G So just play each string freely until they match the pitch on a (tuned) piano!
A tenor ukulele uses GCEA tuning I believe? I use an app called simple ukulele tuner that works great and is very easy to figure out :) you shouldn't have to change the tuning for different songs and the tenor ukulele uses the same tuning as a concert and soprano ukulele so it's very versatile
It sounds like lots of people are having a similar problem to me, but thinking it's the tuning. Mine sounds bad because the third and fourth string are played open the whole song and are clashing. But I don't understand because Dodie is also playing it this way and i don't know how to fix it!!
I got a ukulele for my birthday yesterday because iv been wanting one for a while (even tho I have no idea how to play it) and now that I'm trying to learn how to play, I'm way to shy because I feel like my family will make fun of me even tho I know its not true, WHY AM I LIKE THIS?
I caNT do this I'm so okay so I get the first part but then when you go from the a shape-one over thing to the regular a shape I get confused rip ill just try to learn another song of yours
Why am I here? I can't sing, I don't own a ukulele, much less sing it! I also have a poundĀ of homework I'm supposed to be doing. (I literally measured it on a scale...)
can someone please tell me what the higher pitched end bit was or where to put my fingers bc I cant see how she does it (just incase it matters I have the smallest ukulele size I can't remember what it's called lol oops)
Izzie Dinsdale is it the last lower two notes?? Same with me! If i play them fast like the song it sounds off but if i play them a little slower and only down strumming i think they sound nicer.
Update::: I said a while ago that the tiger uke is good,, yeah not that good tho, mines almost a year old and it doesn't sound that nice anymore, and it comes out of tune so fast lol
Instead of strumming over the hole in the middle of the body, strum a little high up, where the frets start. Thereās less space for your finger to get stuck! It really helped me when I started out :)
soprano and concert have the same tunings, is your uke in tune? you obviously know what the string names are so i mean maybe it's just a mistake but yeah idk i hope that helped ?!!! sorry !! good luck <3
Sorry this is really late but the strumming pattern is Down down up down up (switch) down down up down up (switch) etc. You probably have it figured out by now since this comment is from 3 years ago but if not I hope this helps!
Can you do a ukelele tuning video because mine sounds quite different (it's just g c e a) and its really annoying my because the last couple of chords sound really strange on my uke! It's not that I'm tuning it wrong, my uncle is a pro and he checked it just now, so my uke is in tune... Just not the same as yours. PWEEEEEASE? c
Katie Foster okay so im just gonna indicate the frets and the string bc that would be easier :)) VERSE :) first string=second fret, second string=first fret. then first string=fourth fret, second string=second fret. then first string=sixth fret, second string=fourth fret. then first string=tenth fret, second string=ninth fret. then first string=eight fret, second string=seventh fret. CHORUS :) first string=fifth fret, second string=fourth fret. then first string=seventh fret, second string=sixth fret. then first string=ninth fret, second string=eight fret. then first string=fifth fret, second string=third fret.
also i didnt know that you were asking the chorus only, i thought you said chords instead of chorus but hey! y'all got a bonus from this bitch (me) :)) ā”
Dodie shows how its done: and this.. And that.. If you have dots on your uke... Just put THAT below.. Then here then put your finger here... And yeah.. THAT'S IT
it might depend on what type of uke you have. I think the size Dodie has is a concert size, so if you have a different type like a soprano it will have a different sound.
+TheActualAsia actually im pretty sure the saprano sounds the excact same as the concert I think its because dodie practiced a lot or it because shes the queen of ukuleles
Dame Yulivee it's the one with your ring finger on the dot first, then the second one with your index and ring finger below the dot, then the one with your fingers a fret apart from each other, then the one with your ring finger on the dot again.
WHY DID I LEARN UKE IN D TUNING I LITERALLY CANNOT PLAY THIS SONG BECAUSE NOBODY SEEMS TO KNOW THOSE CHORDS IN D TUNING AHHHHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR kill me.

0 likes@Justin Lawrence It's the same strumming pattern with the same chords but you only strum each chord once and mute for the rest of the pattern. Sorry I'm bad at explaining

0 likes@Justin Lawrence No problem!
0 likesI bought a uke for many reasons, most of which to learn to play this song
34 likesWhich chords do you use when you play the chorus? I can't seem to figure them out
0 likesI already know what the first song I will learn will be when I have my ukulele
0 likesOmg the dots on my ukulele are different than the dots on your ukulele ah I'm guessing it's because I'm using a soprano
141 likesReplies (13)
Same here... I've found a way that works though :))
2 likesBasically, ignore the dot closest to the body and mess around with the positioning of the last two chords until they sound right?
5 likesfor future people who have soprano ukes, here's how to play the last 2 chords: the first one should have your middle finger on the fret right above the last fret (aka the 9th fret) and your index finger on the fret right below that (aka the 8th fret). for the last chord, just slide your fingers down 2 frets so your index finger is on the second dot (7th fret) and your index finger is right below it (6th fret)
52 likes+spottedstar1123 this was so useful! thank you for commenting :)
3 likesKatrina Wall thank youu!
1 likeWhat does Dodie have if it's not a soprano? And which kind sounds better and is easier to play? I'm buying a ukulele and I wanted to know the difference
3 likesDodie's is a Concert.
14 likesConcert is generally the main ukulele people use.
0 likesSoprano is a higher pitch like the classic 'ukulele sound' , Concert Is a bit louder, but relatively similar and in my opinion easier to play than a soprano cuz there's more space between the frets.
2 likesMovieGirl8 look up the difference on YouTube. The bigger the uke is the deeper the sound. The sound of a concert isnāt THAT deeper but itās noticeable if you have been playing for only a short amount of time.
0 likesI have a soprano Bondi ukulele and it's just white dots so its easy to see them :>
0 likesUpdate: I looked at the other comment and I guess i have a concert. haha i've been lied to

TheWolfAngel I have the same problem š both my guitar and uke are flipped so when I started learning this song I just had to take a white pen and improvise
3 likesYeah, my acoustic and my ukulele are flipped. My guitar because it was my first so it was easier and cheaper, and my uke because have you ever seen a left-handed ukuele?? XD
2 likesThe only reason my electric is left-handed is because I wanted the cuts in the right place. Very hard to do solos when you can't reach the 25th fret :D

0 likesDoes anyone know how you're supposed to tune the uke? I know there's different ones but I don't know
0 likesReplies (3)
bgbrooklin As for methods? If you don't have a tuner, which is the quickest and easiest way, I suggest using a piano (or of you don't have a piano, there are plenty of free piano applications, I believe...) to tune. I'd use middle C as my reference point. The notes on a uke are as follows, from sting 1 to 4 (ground to ceiling--IF you're right handed): A E C G
1 likeSo just play each string freely until they match the pitch on a (tuned) piano!
Hope this helps! ^^
Thank you! I have a tenor uke so I don't know if I'm supposed to tune it a certain way to play certain songs.
0 likesA tenor ukulele uses GCEA tuning I believe? I use an app called simple ukulele tuner that works great and is very easy to figure out :) you shouldn't have to change the tuning for different songs and the tenor ukulele uses the same tuning as a concert and soprano ukulele so it's very versatile
0 likesI tried playing this with a very out of tune uke, didnāt end well
0 likesPlease do a tutorial for Paint.

0 likesThe last 2 chords sound really weird on my ukelele? Maybe I'm playing them wrong, cut I'm doing it the exact same way as the video :/
0 likesgrrrr this does not sound right on my ukulele at all š I donāt know what Iām doing wrong
0 likesIs she playing on a soprano or something else? I don't have as many lines on my neck as hers and I am confusion
0 likesThats a concert Uke, not a Tenor. but, close enough ;)
0 likesIt's just GCEA but is a tenor uke instead, if you have a soprano. I'm fairly certain at least.
0 likesWhat ukuelele is this? ^_^

0 likesI want to start ukulele, does anyone have good starter brand suggestions?

I started around two years ago and I bought a Luna concert sized ukulele, they have a beautiful sound :)
1 likeMine is a Tiger one idk it's alright it was around Ā£40 from Amazon it's pretty good for a first relatively cheap uke
0 likesi started with a KALA brand uke and i love it to pieces, it has a really nice sound and can fill a room with music :)
1 likei started with kala, it sounds really nice
0 likesUpdate::: I said a while ago that the tiger uke is good,, yeah not that good tho, mines almost a year old and it doesn't sound that nice anymore, and it comes out of tune so fast lol
1 likeI use Diamond Head
0 likesIdk if you got one but I recommend luna
0 likestiger on amazon is bomb af
0 likesTina48 as a starter I suggest ukaselic. Affordable, nice quality, pretty designs, and easy to use
0 likesmakala is a cheap soprano on amazon for around $50 usd and it plays vvv well and it's a good starter!
1 likeI use a Luna concert and I'm in love with it
0 likesI'm assuming u already bought one but I recommend kala I have a ka-s and it really good.
0 likesMY FINGERS DONT REACH THIS FAR IM STRESSED
0 likesI keep trying to strum but my fingers get caught in the strings when I strum up, can someone please help me I'm so frustrated I'm about to cry
2 likesReplies (2)
When I strum up I don't use all my fingers, I use my thumb. Not sure if that's gonna help but that works for me (edit: like the nail of my thumb)
0 likesInstead of strumming over the hole in the middle of the body, strum a little high up, where the frets start. Thereās less space for your finger to get stuck! It really helped me when I started out :)
0 likesWhat's the chorus??
0 likesPaint chords too?
0 likesI wonder how u play it on guitar?? Anyone in the comments an expert on that kinda stuff??
0 likesHi Dodie, I'm quite artistic but I can't play music. Do you think that I can never play music or do you think it's something that I can be taught.

It's not that I'm tuning it wrong, my uncle is a pro and he checked it just now, so my uke is in tune... Just not the same as yours. PWEEEEEASE? c

3 likesokay so im just gonna indicate the frets and the string bc that would be easier :))
VERSE :)
first string=second fret, second string=first fret.
then first string=fourth fret, second string=second fret.
then first string=sixth fret, second string=fourth fret.
then first string=tenth fret, second string=ninth fret.
then first string=eight fret, second string=seventh fret.
CHORUS :)
first string=fifth fret, second string=fourth fret.
then first string=seventh fret, second string=sixth fret.
then first string=ninth fret, second string=eight fret.
then first string=fifth fret, second string=third fret.
first string is : G
second string is : C

0 likesHave you tuned it correctly?
0 likes+Leah Baker obviously
0 likes+bagel overlord same here
0 likesMaybe it's the kind of ukulele you have
0 likesit might depend on what type of uke you have. I think the size Dodie has is a concert size, so if you have a different type like a soprano it will have a different sound.
2 likes+TheActualAsia actually im pretty sure the saprano sounds the excact same as the concert
2 likesI think its because dodie practiced a lot or it because shes the queen of ukuleles

Dame Yulivee it's the one with your ring finger on the dot first, then the second one with your index and ring finger below the dot, then the one with your fingers a fret apart from each other, then the one with your ring finger on the dot again.
