Most STM32 MCUs are perfectly capable of running Doom. You can even replace Mario with Doom on this one, should not be much of a problem. But you will never be able to put Mario back again.
@Jaroslav Houdek Why not? He flashed the SPI ROM multiple times, and each time he restored the previous change. I think the final hack will be to replace one ROM with a loader and have a whole library on an added flash chip inside.
@Jaroslav Houdek You don't seem to understand. DOOM won't fit within 128KB of space, obviously. However I see now that there is actually a secondary 1MB flash chip inside the system as well, so it may be able to fit on there after all. It most definitely won't fit within 128KB tho.
@John Długoszthe external flash is used to store the NES ROM. There is no such thing as NES Doom AFAIK. So the only way is to replace code in main memory. But due to the readout protection, you can't make a backup of the internal flash.
@Carlos Daniel Aguirre Lol well it's not exactly that simple... The pregnancy test was completely altered, with an aftermarket screen put in and a direct video feed being piped to it from another device. It most definitely is not simply running on a pregnancy test. Were you not aware of this?
The Follower2020-11-22 12:39:25 (edited 2020-11-22 12:41:20 )
I unironically think this will be the only console that will never run Doom. Every other console ever can run it. Well, not really but if we count every console since the SNES then every console after that can run it.
@Chris L on n64 there is doom 64, quake 64, mortal kombat 2 was uncensored, there is also residen't evil series on gamecube...wolf 3d was a bad port, but after pegi/esrb they was able to put some uncensored games.
I don’t think there’s DOOM for the original NES, at least not running from a regular (as in: no RPi or so) cartridge - happy to get corrected on that though
@The Dawsons Memes Lol I can't even remember what I said. Probably something about DOOM not being possible on it. He was only able to get an insanely cut back and barely functional version of it on there anyway, so that hardly counts if that's what you're getting at. Surely you're bright enough to realize that doesn't count.
@PGtheVRguy Lol anything is a pretty broad statement. There are most definitely things that can not run DOOM, like a 286 computer for instance, or a Colecovision.
@Equinox Lol yeah it did actually. This isn't DOOM running on this thing, it's something else entirely. Its an insanely heavily modified version w pretty much everything cut out to make it run. That hardly counts as running what we know of as the full retail version of DOOM.
I said it wouldn't be powerful enough to run it & the storage wouldn't be enough & I was dead on right on both points.
@Equinox it had to be cut back in every conceivable way to not only make it fit but make it run on the hardware. It was pretty much exactly as I said it would be.
@skins4thewin I mean it's just doom with less good textures. I wouldn't discount it by saying it's not actually doom because it is doom just without a lot of the graphics.
@Pedro Gonzalez Exactly. So the logical solution would have been to do it ‘the old fashioned way’, eg. Hooking up to a PC via USB. But this is not possible, so all Nintendo could do is make a public apology.
Funnily enough Nintendo has once again helped scalpers and the second-hand market. I assume now those 1st gen G&Ws with the "language glitch" will be a hot commodity when they replace them with the fixed batch on store shelves, stock up now
@アップル(applchu) : Do you really think they will make a second batch? This is a limited edition item which will stop being sold in March, so there won't be a second batch.
@OMA2k depends on how popular a item is. They said they will actively manufacturer it until March. They could update it on the fly between now and then
@OMA2k i most certainly do. Think about it, its the holiday season. If we just think of the nintendo store in NY alone it could very easily sell out by the middle of December, which will be indicative of its status all around. Especially since its so cheap at $50. That leaves a nice new batch for the new year, sometime in January or maybe later December. They stop manufacturing in march so i expect maybe 2 or 3 manufacturing cycles
@OMA2k dorsnt mean they will stop manufacturing it. Just like 3d all stars it will continue zo restock to its last day. I dont trust companies that says "limited" edition these days. I know for a fact that it happens a lot that limited edition get restocked even years after release.
@Shinji D Nintendo hates to help their popular cheap products in any way, that's why the 'classic' consoles and this are never in stock and always scalped. They're too good and they provide what most casual gamers would consider to be a great alternative to their hundreds of dollars Switch devices at a fraction of the profit margin.
So Nintendo keeps making these products, mainly just to generated buzz, then clamps manufacturing/inventory to a bare minimum, and kills them off at the earliest point they can.
If Nintendo could make it so that nobody but Youtube influencers would get these products, and no retail releases at all, they would. These are just publicity stunts to them.
@NavidErde I mean yeah, that' a typical Nintendo move, but why should they care? You can play those games without much effort on almost every Device with customizable OS. Instead they should be happy that their community is so cool and wants to make Homebrew and stuff. But big companies don't get that. Because of Piracy, it's understandable but in the end the sufferes are the good people who pay for the games while the pirates hack it anyway even if it is a Playstation with a badass(not a fan tho) encryption.
@NavidErde In the SNES version there was a message from the original developers. So they knew about the hacks but didn't (care?) do anything about it. Wish they didn't make the usb port power only, I don't have the tools for this.
Man, disappointing the data pins aren't hooked up on the usb port. I was really hoping this could turn into a neat easily homebrewable little handheld.
Meh.. the lack of buttons makes it not very practical to hack and put more NES games on it. No start and select buttons make it so most NES games won’t even be able to start. These Mario games were modified for this system to use A and B as start and select. Regular roms won’t work the same.
This was insane! I've read a bit about microcontroller operation, as well as data encryption, but seeing those ideas and principles put to use in hacking this was fascinating! Very impressive.
Just wondering for amateurs how does one achieve this kind of understanding? I'm walking through a CS degree but the most relevant course seems to be comp arch. Connecting to debug ports, dumping falsh/ram, trying to figure out the encryption algorithm, all these sound very interesting to me. I can probably follow along with enough tools but how do I do all of these on my own?
@Levelworm I'm dealing with STM32 MCUs at work, often also using external memory and implementing firmware update mechanisms. Doing this kind of work, I need to figure out how to make things more secure, so that nobody can actually get the code or extract an encryption key (e.g. when the bootloader itself is being updated) by sniffing any lines that connect MCU and the external flash. So I'm basically on the other side of what stacksmashing does. This made it easy to understand for me. It made me happy, because I remember times when I would watch videos like this and understood basically nothing.
@billigerfusel Thanks! I guess it's very useful to get realwork done in the field. Do you know how those work recruit? Do you have to come from a hardware background (A EE or Computer Engineering) or they more look for projects one did?
I understood very very little in this video. However, it was very well made and informative, nonetheless! Great work, and excited for how this community is so smart! Can't wait to see other games on this cool little device!
Do you think it'll ever become easy to flash your own ROMs onto the device? I couldn't justify picking it up for just Super Mario Bros, but if I could play Mario 3 that would be a different story 👀
I'd love to get into this stuff some day. The DS Lite is my favorite console and I wish more hacks were done with it, regardless of how useless they'd be. Awesome video.
Very elaborate stuff! I would love to be able to run the GB G&W Gallery 1-4 games on this, just to keep the G&W theme going on and have a dedicated system to G&W games only!
@Bees ReeSorry it wasn't written in an obvious way. I meant to say you keep the packed in games too as they are sold, but add only the G&W gallery games to also make it a dedicated G&W system. I personally wouldn't add any other type of game on here other than these!
I would personally add Game and Watch roms. I think we must be patient. Soon there will be a way to make this gizmo a super cool G&W all in one emulator.
That was so informative! Thank you for your work and the awesome breakdown! I know you probably can't share the XOR key, but was it of any significance? Or just random bytes? Also, how long is it?
Wow, nice work! I'm personally really curious about the hidden Mario drawing song, since it's originally from the DSiWare app Flipnote Studio. I've spent a bit of time reverse-engineering Flipnote in the past, so I'm wondering if they made the effort to include a full Flipnote parser or if it's been converted into some other format. Any ideas?
You're going up against a stacked deck if the Embedded system is using the Flash in a XIP mode. My guess is that they may be moving some parts of it to RAM for faster execution. Unfortunately they are probably not using the Flash as memory storage so those handy Flash read/write and sector management functions would probably not have been moved to RAM :( I cannot believe they did not completely lock down the SoC though... wonder if there are any test functions in RAM that they were using for manufacturing QA, possibly even provisioning (though I doubt for serial flash programming; that was prob. pre-programmed before going on the PCB). Pretty weak encryption on the flash too, they left the door wide open (inspecting the RAM and flash and doing a reverse encryption), was it actually XOR or some polynomial (n-bit shifter) ? Good work on it so far, good luck on the rest! Cheers,
Wow fantastic breakdown. I didn't understand the technical aspects of this demonstration, but I can't wait to see what other cool stuff you can do. I hope to see more nes roms get added, that would be amazing as only 3 games added in this modern game & watch feels limited and kinda wish they added more.
You answered the first question I had when I saw the announcement for this device! Thanks so much for your efforts, I look forward to seeing what comes next.
Well that took way less time than I expected. Also, a big thanks for showing the process of how you did it, your tools had me in awe for a moment (DevOpser here) awesome video :) !
Since this thing is more or less made from off the shelf parts, wouldnt it be possible to upgrade the flash chip to something larger than 128kb, then load the original firmware on it (after an exploit to load further roms on it has been developed of course)
Seriously nice work! I enjoyed the twitter adventure the other day. Thanks for all the progress you've made, I can't wait for mine to get here from osaka
@Chris Kader Not really, they never have to do any maintenance on any Game and Watch consoles. It's a situation where they simply have to change a few strings of text before recompiling the ROM, and then there would be no need to have an emulator stand-in for patching. It's cleaner to have everything run without bloat. It would be different if it were a more intensive type of patch, this is inconsequential.
@North The idea with keeping a rom that is original is that you can use it across many devices and not have to worry about it acting differently. And if it does, you hot patch it on the devices versus constantly making change sto the original and then hoping your changes work with new devices later.
Kensen If you need to modify the string during development, it is much easier to change text in source code than to patch the ROM again. It is much better if the ROM is “clean”. Even if you need to change the code behavior to fix bugs or add new functions, easier to do this in emulator than in the original code.
@North The original Game and Watch did not come with Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. These are ROMs from the NES. The ROMs for the NES versions are used on many different pieces of hardware for emulation. As such, you don't want to make modifications to your ROM each time you are using it on a new device (such as the Super Mario Bros ROM) as that wouldn't make any sense. One of the biggest reasons for this is due to unknown issues that could arise from making basic modifications. These roms have had decades of testing and people poking. You could easily change one line of code and test a bit and not find something. Then you deploy and 10k users are getting an error because of a specific way they ran a level. You would keep the ROM used across all devices in a "clean" state and then hotfix it using code on the devices themselves. This is seen across all devices that nintendo supports this kind of emulation on. Granted, this device was never meant to see any new roms or have any updates, but that doesnt mean design choices (such as not modifying roms directly) should be changed.
@Chris Kader Yes, this is why I specified inconsequential updates such as changing strings of text and not major upgrades like the new cheats. I understand that NES games weren't always cleanly developed and largely relied on assembly during development. I'm not referring to fundamental changes, even potentially fundamental. And there is still only one Game and Watch which plays SMB, which is this one, regarding the first sentence.
I do completely understand what you're getting at, though, if you're playing it completely safe.
@Chris Kader It would make perfect sense to make modifications to the ROM each time you are using it on a new device. WTF are you even talking about? Making hot patches via the emulator could also introduce errors.
@Coco as far as I understand, they do this because otherwise it would be harder to enforce copyright on the roms, in this way they're still using the same copyrighted game code as of 35 years ago. They've been doing the same thing with Super Mario 3D All Stars!
There's also another thing, it's probably impossible/too much work to bring the dev environment they used to build the original roms, so changing the actual code might not be an option. Having a set of emulator-side patches is also probably easier to experiment with, or they could easily run A/B tests ecc.
Amazing! thanks so much for the overview. There's a lot of really advanced topics here but I got the basics of it and I hope we can do more fun stuff with it. BTW is there a way to keep the clock portion on all the time, its really annoying that it turns off when its supposed to be a WATCH! Is that a firmware setting?

This is really cool. I wonder if you can somehow inject code by reprogramming the memory and get the firmware via this route.
I hope that we can put our own ROMS in someday! I definitely wanna mod in SMB2USA and SMB3 as well as some of the popular ROM Hacks for 1 & 3 like Extra Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3Mix!
@Andrew Oberhauser Woah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning! It can and inevitably will run other NES roms in the future with modding, although I can't say the same for games from other platforms.
@VertiHippo127 But the modding won't be easy. The USB has no data line. It's only power. That means for the majority of people it won't be as easy as the NES mini by plugging it to a computer and running a program.
With the ability to load any game on there, I might just buy one of these. Could backpack another microcontroller and larger ROM on there and potentially have a hot-swappable game library? Or perhaps the firmware is able to handle a larger rom with more contents? Identifying the game directory format in ROM would be interesting. Also can you try the various under-volting (with specific timing) techniques to break STM32 read-out protection - this has been accomplished recently (STM8 for sure and possibly STM32). Reverse-engineering the firmware of this would be very interesting and have lots of potential to add new mappers, more games, etc.
The dream would be if you could add a micro-sd reader and have the firmware rewritten to just parse the roms on the card and present them in a menu. Do you think that could be done theoretically?
when i saw the game and watch, my first thought was man.. i hope someone can hack it to load roms. good job. hopefully it eventually can have any game you want on there.
Great work! Next step: desolder old 128 KB flash module and solder in new 1 GB flash module and then load in all the NES games that ever came for the NES. It's only 8 pins you have to desolder, not that difficult.
Very impressive work. I also happened to have the TL866 but I don't have the clamp adapter and I don't think I am willing to invest the time to hack it. I am just curious about one thing: given that the encryption used is only XOR, why would the entropy of the flash bin be high?
This is awesome! If we can replace one of the roms with a different one. That would be great! I'd be soo much happier if I could have SMB and SMB 3 rather than the Japanese SMB2.
I would love to get my hands on one of these so I can put forth similar research but have yet to find one. I have a lot of experience in this type of thing too.
It'll be a great day when someone is able to get the REAL Game & Watch Super Mario Bros on this instead of another port of Ball. Awesome work on getting us closer to that day!
Zeldas game & watch 35 year anniversary is next year.. Guaranteed they'll release it next Christmas.. And maybe some other titles in between now and then 🤞
@Horizonfan by saying "zelda eww" you are also referring to breath of the wild, a link to the past, majora's mask, a link between worlds, twilight princess, wind waker, and link's awakening, which are all great games, the only good metroids are the first one, super metroid, that one 3ds remake, and the metroid prime games,
@Horizonfan i just didn't think of it, it's that simple, i've never played it so i don't have any memories connected to it, and i doubt you have either, and if you did it's connected to the arguably better remake on the 3ds
@Horizonfan also you didn't notice it, because you would have seen i missed a few, so you would have been like "you're not a real metroid fan cause you forgot a few" and i'm not, i've only played super metroid with the snes online
@Horizonfan btw the whole point of my argument was that you were generalizing, is doesn't matter if i didn't list them all, the point is that saying zelda eww you are saying all zelda games are bad, also nobody fucking cares how much money you have
@Horizonfan are you ok inside there? Rando just didn’t mention one game, why do you have to get so pissy about it? He never said you weren’t a Metroid fan. No need to throw out a copy of Metroid to prove something in an accusation that you were never in xD
@Horizonfan you have multiple game lots on your channel, you own a signed copy of metroid, and you have the OOT collectors edition plus some more stuff you probably aren't showing
@Tom Anderson I'm not disagreeing, but it would be cool to have both. Zelda 2 is super underrated and I think that part of why is because it was different from the other Zelda games. But if it wasn't a Zelda game like it wasn't intended, it would be an all-time NES classic, while it's just an " ok" game now.
@Marshal Tito did you notice, the plastic sleeve has the specific game super mario bros on it.. This way they produce the same cardboard cover over and over and only have to make unique plastic sleeves to suit each game releaseds... Seems logical.. I hope they go well and eventually release the the dual screen donkey kong game and watch, that would be absolutely class! The anniversary of the first ever handheld with a D-Pad(correct me if I'm wrong)
@Pat Quearney yeah- and a Zelda G&W is probably in the works for next year; I was thinking that would be the big release for the 35th anniversary of Legend of Zelda
@Pat Quearney It is now a year later and your prediction was 100% accurate. It has Zelda 2 and Links Awakening in addition to the regular Zelda game, but we already know that.
@Not So Entertainment System With the release of Metroid for the Switch, maybe a Metroid Game and Watch is on the horizon.

@Jerry Spann Last year was the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros series, this year was the 35th Anniversary of the Metroid series, but Metroid didn't get a Game & Watch release, not sure why not! I'd love to know why not..
This year was also the 35th anniversary Zelda (& the 40th anniversary of Donkey Kong's arcade debut), and the Zelda Game & Watch was the last in the Game & Watch series(or maybe just the dual screen version Game & Watch)...
...and as much as we'd probably all love to see a Metroid release(as well as some sort of Game & Watch fan made back port of Metroid!).. Next year is actually Kirby's Gameboy 30th Anniversary, (which also never got a game and watch release), but a pink kirby Game & Watch with at the very least the Gameboy & NES titles would be cool too!
But if I had to hazard a guess for next year.. I'd put my money on Donkey Kong, as next year is actually Donkey Kongs "Game & Watch" 30th anniversary and a major Nintendo mascot, just like Mario, Zelda and Kirby.. I've not even picked up my Zelda Game & Watch yet and I'm already looking forward to what next year has to hold!! 😉👌
"The Cortex M7 can't run Linux" sad penguin noises
In all seriousness, I love the video, opening up things to see how they work and poking them to see what happens is, I think, one of the most fun things you can do (outside of the intended use, of course) with such comparatively "simple" devices.
This is handy... I try to hack (and often fail) internet routers and they often have proprietary SOCs with no publicly available datasheet.... having a common microcontroller with a published datasheet is a real advantage for the hacker.
I bet nintendo released this knowing the community would hack it, and I'm sure they're following everything along closely for r&d to the next hardware release.
Awesome video! I am currently trying to figure out if doing video out from one is feasible. I am not very knowledgeable about these smaller LCD panels. Are they mipi or standard lvds? Is there even such thing as a video splitter for the signal output or would I have to run jumpers from pins?
I honestly didn't realize Mario 1 and 2 were that small, small enough to fit into 128KB of RAM! Plus they have that digital mario draw song on there too somehow! How on earth did they fit that on there too??
I am wondering about a couple of things... if there's a way to connect data to the usb c connecter AND if there will be a way to reroute the flash to read off of a micro sd card... I don't think it will be that easy but that is the only way I can see people putting more than 2 games on this thing.
I'm really hoping Nintendo does something similar to this maybe with the upcoming Zelda anniversary. Heck, I'd even be down for just Game & Watch products based off of classic Black Box games like Ice Climber, Clu-Clu Land, and Excitebike.
Regardless, even if that doesn't happen, at least we can hack, hehe. Homebrew Game & Watch, here we come~!!
Any update on the games themselves? The small modification done to the games' UI (Menu, high-score save, easy difficulty selection) and supposedly the "minus-world" glitch can be great to study, unless it's running an external script instead of being a new ROM.
After ten seconds of watching this I realise I will never be able to replicate it. Should have "...... if you are a guru with electronics" in the title. Still impressive hack if beyond my understanding.
I believe this encryption scheme is called XOR-based one time pad. That XOR stream you inferred was essentially the “one time pad”. The weakness in the implementation here is that there was no protection from using the one time pad multiple times because you could change the contents of the flash. Thanks for the super interesting video.
I think Nintendo really went out of their way to try to make this console as unhackable as possible even though it's already been hacked, a normal user would not spend their time doing this elaborate shit....
The SNES mini and the NES mini were hackable because the power ports were also data ports, easy as pie.....
I was about to comment that it was probably a bit wise xor encryption since given how fast the games boot I wouldn’t think block encryption would be an option. (Given the limited memory and architecture)
Clearly sorcery. I bet that summon a portal to the Mushroom Kingdom is very similar to this. Very nice sorcery nonetheless!I wonder if we can get another roms run on this.
I imagine that there will be a 3D printable connector developed to allow mere mortals to pop open the G&W and load the NES/Famicom Mario catalogue on. Otherwise it will be tricky without this kind of expertise. Looks amazing though, so well done
sometimes I don´t know what Nintendo is thinking about. They make beautiful hardware and them use rubbys software. They should add a good colection of NES game and of course game and watch games
@Souljastation 5 is it really killing you that you can't play NES roms on the bus on any existing device? Are you travelling somewhere you can take a game and watch but not a vita, where the time required to travel is necessary that you bring a toy with you? Come on dude, live in the real world
@acex222 Seriously this. I get the novelty of playing different games on this, but there are so many devices that can do just that very well nowadays that why even bother. I play NES games on my gba with a flashcard and SNES games on my New 3ds. You could pick up a cheap Chinese anbernic device that can play nearly everything up to ps1 fairly well and for fairly cheap. Or even cheaper use your phone with a bluetooth controller.
Thanks for the free laughs, sir. This is a rip-off and should be treated like that. They didn't even got the languages right in the secret easter egg song.
In the other hand: They already throw the first knockoffs on Ali for sale, BTW. One looks exactly the same, they just removed the Nintendo Logo and wrote ¨Super Mari Bross¨ on the case. And it appears based on the GV300.
@Souljastation 5 Nah, the screen in this device is too small to be enjoyable and the d-pad is too small to be comfortable as well. Pair it with being hard to hack by regular users (since the USB port doesn't have the data line for that), the tiny storage and the very slow processor, which makes it impossible to run anything more demanding than NES games, and all together makes this device a poor choice for retro emulation.
@OMA2k I'm almost finished super Mario on it (and I'm usually picky when it comes to controls, yes they're small but they're surprisingly not uncomfortable to use).
Regarding the screen, sure I have to use my reading glasses but that happens for the Vita too, so not much of a difference there.
It would be cool to have a good portion (or all) of the NES library on this (I'd buy an SD card mod).
IIRC on Twitter he says that the The USB port does have the data line.
This is the perfect portable NES: it's just a bit bigger than a credit card and it surely would be better than those Chinese portable famiclones.
P.S: I didn't mention that the audio is surprisingly loud for a portable so small (way louder than the GBA).
From experience repairing gameboys and Sony Vaio laptop batteries, i can tell you that these screws can easily be removed with no damage with a small flat tip screwdriver.
NES roms probably but, G&W? Is there any G&W rom that's dumped? I'd be very surprised. Not that it would be enough for emulation, some description of the graphics would be needed at the very least.
Very interesting to see them using a flash chip, but I guess it's a necessity when they have to deal with large ROMs. One thing you should check is the BOOT_ADDx register (refer to section 3.4 Boot modes in the datasheet). This should hold the address of the main program's entry point, which could very well be in the RAM! In this case the entire program is held in the RAM, which would make sense. Maybe you can create a hacked Nintendo ROM that will read this register?
Edit: Yeah, if I were to make this thing, I'd probably put the entire emulator engine as well as the games into the flash chip, and leave the MCU firmware quite primitive, only having it read and decrypt the flash chip, load it's entire contents into RAM, and jump to program's entry point. What's the size of flash chip in your case? Does it fit fully into MCU RAM?
cool stuff - wonder which mappers the emulator supports - would love to get a few extra games on there - dragon buster II e.t.c.. 1MB spi flash - could have a fair few extra games on there!
Now the modders need to figure out a way to squeeze a debugger chip inside the device and connect it to the USB data pins so you can upload ROMs over USB 😎
Game & Watch Gallery 4 for the GBA should have been the built in game for this. Porting a GBA emulator with this ROM into this package would be perfect!
Kind of surprised they patched the copyright in memory as opposed to just editing the program ROM itself. They had no problems fixing NES games back in the GameCube days, so I wonder what changed...I'm curious if they outsourced the development to a third party and this is IP license related, which would be silly...again...
I hope there will be a modded firmware where you can disable the sleeptimer. I bought the game and watch to mainly use it as a clock. But after a couple of minutes it goes into sleep mode/turns off. Also wish for an easier method, because sadly the usb is only for power.
Well, I was thinking of buying one of these, but I've seen old LCD screens with more sophisticated CPUs and larger 8 pin ROM chips.. This thing is just a piece of e-waste..
I had the dumb doubt that if I would be able to turn on the G&W without the battery connected since I want it to be ON forever as a desk clock without killing the battery. This video helped to notice that it is indeed possible.
Can't wait for mine to arrive, I've already prototyped a pcb with a microcontroller and a much larger flash to implement a sort of "bank switching" to hold more games, I just need the thing in my hands to finish writing the software and test it
@MetroidSlime it's just a 64mbit flash and a 120mhz ucontroller that I already had around. I designed and made the pcb. Will only work (if at all) for mmc1 games
I'm super disappointed they did not enable RDP2. If they did, the device would be quite a challenge to hack. Almost impossible without some leak from insider.
i actually think that, for a cheaper price point (maybe like 15-20 dollars each) it would be a very interesting idea for Nintendo to release games like this on the smaller Game and Watch style consoles - like, imagine something like a Zelda G&W? I know that this is a special case because of the anniversary but it would be pretty cute :3
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that they're hotpatching the ROM data in the emulator. That's basically what they did for the Wii special edition NES games (Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros).
delicious work sir ^_^ im very excited about this project ^^ we all need castlevania running on this, and double dragon 2 😁😁 would there be any way to install an internal sd card and have one of the in built game choices boot from that internal sd card a number of modified roms? by the manifold and forgotten gods i do hope so! ^_-
Try to see if you can swap the theme playing while time is displayed. Would be cool to see a Zelda or even a Mr. Game and Watch one instead! Either way great work man!
I'd honestly love to see id/Bethesda.. Microsoft? .. put out a dedicated OG Doom handheld like this with Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and maybe the master levels.
Would there be a way to connect the USB port to the PCB so you can use it to flash other ROMs on it? If that could be done, then figuring out how to add the ROMs to it, you'll have a portable NES package. And if you could have it where you load a ROM from a USB flashdrive, that would make it so you could load whatever games you wanted without having to worry about the on-board storage limits.
You might be interested looking at this article from Kraken, they talk about using voltage glitching to trick the processor into thinking it's in RDP 0 when issuing a flash read command in the process of dumping keys from a Trezor.
Since the USB data ports aren't connected it will never be as easy as the NES mini. Maybe people with the tools and know how though will provide a service you can send your game and watch in and have it reflashed.
@littlefreak3000 yeah I know they explained that part in the video... but now they know where the data is, I'm wondering if they can connect the data to the port OR take the exsiting port out and putting a whole new one on there with a modded chip that connects to the data... I don't know if it's possible but since they've isolated the data point it's not impossible right?
@Jeff Cross Impossible? No. Even remotely simple? Definitely not.
If these were being produced on a much more massive scale, and Nintendo was openly planning to make many more units in the coming years, it might be worthwhile for someone to make/sell a custom programming device/clamp that could do the process faster. For how small of a run this is, that's highly unlikely to happen.
As it is, I think the best we'll get is a few folks specializing in doing the process themselves manually as a paid service. If the service could be done for a reasonable price, I might be down for it.
Realistically though, I think that it might almost be better for someone to figure out how to store something like a pi zero inside of one of these shells, with all the buttons and everything functioning as they should. But... This looks to be a teeny tiny device. Not much room to work with in there. Who knows.
@Dan teh Chad yeah I figured... but still if people REALLY want to do this they could and that's enough for me to be at least a little hopeful. I was also thinking of a pi zero but with all the single screened Game & Watch games in them as well hahah... again high hopes and low expectations... so I AM thinking realistically...
@Jeff Cross I think you're on a reasonable track there. Honestly, with these coming out, I wonder if someone might do a teardown, clone the body, and redo the internal layout to be friendly enough for a pi zero setup. Be pretty easy to put the entire collection of NES and GB onto something like that, and I imagine a lot of DIY types like myself would totally buy a kit like that to put together on the weekend.
@Dan teh Chad I would SO love to buy one of these kits to make my self... I DID buy 2 of them hahah... I would be even more into it if they can add another screen hahah but that might be asking for too much lol.
Nice work dude. Though I probably understand like only 2% of the stuff you said. It's like in college when the professor said some important shit and you just nodded pretending you understood everything to avoid being questioned.
Right now at the very least one may be able to run any 40KiB NES ROM like Galaga or Wrecking Crew (and 24KiB ROMs by doubling up on the PRG) and (perhaps) single-sided FDS game like Knight Move or Smash Ping Pong on this device.
kinda interesting that Nintendo went with a STM32 actually, its not as easy to load a rom but that will make it possible to load own firmware on it and of course loose the original firmware forever. im not too familiar with the STM32 and if its even possible to read its firmware/code, I thought that it was only to write to (unless of course reverse engineer it), I dont have one so cant really toy with it :)
the super mario game and watch has made me realize that why has someone not tried to make a custom game and watch being able to emulate all the nes, snes, game boy and more games, i mean a raspberry pi seems more than sufficient to do the task but idk.
It would be awesome if RetroArch gets ported to this, because that means you could play the Game & Watch Collection games released on the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance.
I'll bet they've kept this up because of the can of worms they opened up with attacking ROM preservation sites a few years ago... Since then we've not heard anything... I wonder why... Would be fucking hilarious if they retracted the attack after being caught red handed using those sites to increase SNES library on the switch virtual console...
What is your approach for dumping this chip? I have had great success dumping the F2 and F4 chips (rdp1) using vcc glitching on the system bootloader. Perhaps this would work on the H7B0 also? I was also able to dump F2 at rdp2 by a double vcc glitch.
I think Nintendo makes there stuff this way because they understand it's user base. We all wanna hack this and Nintendo never really made it that hard.
Awesome video man! Unfortunately with 128kb it doesn't look like you'll be able to fit many roms on there aside from the earlier generation titles that range from 25-65kb. But most NES games after that are 129-513kb from looking at my rom list.
So the emulator in this does patching on the fly, that's very interesting. Nintendo did the same for the emulator used for Super Mario 3D All-Stars and it seems to make things easier for them as they don't have to fiddle around in completed code.
I'd like to add the US version of SMB2, SMB3, and the original Mario Bros to it. With Dr. Mario as possible bonus. If there's enough space left, then throw Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine on there too.
Sucks that Nintendo didn't include Super Mario Bros. 2 USA and Super Mario Bros. 3 too. Hopefully you can add the two games in. I'm just worried about the limited amount of storage space.
Hey brother, you're great.!.!.!.! I'm waiting for more memory flash, for more new games in the "nintendo game and watch" hacked and modified roms and software.... Great job.!.!.!.!
Inetresting im already subbed but have no memory of your channel. Anyway great vid. Great to see that nintendo uses roms but codemns others for using them. I hope other g&w games are emualted too
Andrew Oberhauser Some Doom ports were fit into 2 megabytes with multiple levels. And they probably didn’t even use compression. Back in the 90s I had a copy of Quake with some multiplayer mods (but only 1 level) on a single floppy disk. And finally, since you need to open it anyway, SPI Flash chip should be trivial to replace.
Lo siento hermano no hablo inglés... Sólo te entiendo un 30% de lo que dices pero es impresionante que lo lograrás en 3 dias, XD la gran N es muy hackeable, por cierto te ganaste un sub 1+
Pretty awesome! I’ll be keeping mine just the way it is! I have a switch and 3ds with all my favorite games already so there would be no reason for me to hack new games into it. Plus I don’t want the value to depreciate. seeing as it’s a collectable release, I would imagine tampering with its original configuration may reduce the resale value quite a bit. Maybe I’ll buy a second one
The 2020 copyright isn't the only thing that's hotpatched into the rom. An original copy of SMB1 would unlock hard mode, after you beat the game and it would stay in hard mode until you turn off the NES. Since the G&W doesn't have a possibility to "turn off" the NES, they included a toggle for normal & hard after you beat the game once.
Please don't, chances are the average person will not be able to hack this without specialised equipment, such as shown in the video.

Let me get this straight. They are patching the original ROM (to update the copyright notice) at runtime rather than just bundling it? What kind of advantage does that give them? EDIT: Just read in another thread (thanks to @SkUnreal) it looks like they do this for legal copyright reasons.
You could try a Fault injection attack to try to bypass the Firmware protection. The only downside is that if not done correctly you could damage the chip and would need to buy a new device or probably just buy the stm32 mcu and once you get it working standalone attack the real device ;) Refer to this paper for more info: shaping the glitch:optimizing voltage fault injection attack
This game has Easter eggs. Turn the unit on. Hold the A button for 5 seconds. It will play the Mario drawing song while drawing Mario's face. You can have different language subtitles while it plays the song
Nintendo had a NES emu running on the GBA over a decade ago.

@Powerlated Wait what? Source? Also, a GBA CPU is somewhat closer to a SoC than to a UC in terms of power (but then again, that specific UC in the G&W is pretty beefy... and in fact might be pretty close to a GBA, not only in terms of performance but in architecture too IIRC).
@The Cheaterman No, he is wrong. The Classic NES series games are in fact emulated, and the games’ graphics are drawn through the tiled background modes of the GBA PPU. For the CPU power of the GBA, I can guarantee you that the teeny tiny ARM7TDMI stands no chance against the STM32 in the Game and Watch. Even if both CPUs ran at the same clock speed, the STM32 would be more performant via more efficient CPU design (pipelining, out of order execution, branch prediction, etc.)
They should of made the thing where you can download games for a fee at least so you wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to know how to hack into the thing. I started watching this and had no clue what the hell he was talking about, I'm not educated on this type of thing, not one tiny bit. Wish there was someone who can explain it in "dumb ass terms" for people like me who is not versed in tech language and know how! Or better yet they could of just made them where you can download games for a fee from the Nintendo store, have a game and watch section of the Nintendo library. You can buy games for the switch so why not for the game and watch if it was made to have that feature in the first place? Maybe they will have another release of this where it will have that feature and have a chance at downloading games for it! Probably cost more, but probably not much more because buy games for it. Also dont know why they didnt put more built in games in it, they could of put maybe Mario 2 (American's version) and Mario 3, maybe two more original game and watch games also. Be cool if they put super Mario land 2 game on it that would of been the reason I would of went crazy for and go out and buy it when it was first released. They even said after march they wont sell them anymore, I just saw them at walmart yesterday with 20 of them behind glass being sold and we are in may so that was a lie just to hype it up to make sure they sell and still there was about 20 behind glass. I say in a few more months probably be half price. And hopefully they will come out with a better one where you can have games downloaded on to it, or make them where they have more games on it. I hope they will soon!
Creo un programa para ejecutar el doom en el 4Mb? Se puede poner un lector sd-card por usb? El programa bloquea la ejecución de Mario y coloca un emulador? Tipo DOS?
did you try these attacks against it? https://www.usenix.org/system/files/conference/woot17/woot17-paper-obermaier.pdf ; because its RDP 1 section 3.3 . 3 years old but still could work. This is also a great chance to play around a chipwhisperer lite if you have one, the creator of the device used it to extract firmware out from protected smart light bulbs.
Is the type C port a full USB port or just for charging? This will be very limited if you have to flash the ROM with a flasher toolkit and not through the USB port. Oh it is just charging... :-(
@Mo Ral Depends on what you mean by "easily hackable", but considering the equipment to hack it is pretty cheap and the security is close to being broken I'd say it qualifies.

@blahdelablah it would be easier if there was a data connection on usb c. Wich is expected on a divice this price range. Imo. And there is not enough space on it.
@Mo Ral Not really, it would just jack up the cost. Think about it like this. The device is sold with 3 games. Why would they add space for 20 games if all they need is space for 3 games? There's no reason for it. When you hack devices like this you're working against what the manufacturers intended, if Nintendo wanted people to hack their devices then you'd have a point but I'm pretty sure they don't want that.
@Mo Ral "so you think nintendo wants the nes mini and snes mini to be hacked?" No. Read what I said. I'm suggesting Nintendo doesn't want any of their products to be hacked.
@Mo Ral "often the microchips for companies are cheaper because they buy larger quantities of them." Yes, but that has nothing to do with it, because buying 100,000 1GB flash ROMs will still be cheaper than buying 100,000 8GB flash ROMs. In engineering, you optimise the design based on providing the required functionality at the lowest cost. It makes no sense for Nintendo to buy larger flash ROMs when they wouldn't use the space.

@blahdelablah but why had nes mini and snes mini consoles etra storage space, then?
Like the battery in the game and watch is from the joycons. Nintendo got many of them laying around.
@Mo Ral "but why had nes mini and snes mini consoles etra storage space, then?" I'd suspect for OS updates, as far as I'm aware they both ran a Linux-based OS. Based on this teardown it seems the G&W device uses a much more limited OS. There may still be some space for some more games, but I suspect there won't be enough space for the entire NES library like you can get on the NES Mini. "Like the battery in the game and watch is from the joycons. Nintendo got many of them laying around." Yes, sometimes it's cheaper to reuse what you already have access to, but not always.
Is it possible to copy the file that creates the clock animation? It would be nice to make a raspberry pi clock with a slightly larger screen playing the clock program.
so... the usb data pins are disconnected? lol we can design a flex pcb that ties into those pins connects a interface chip to allow communication with both the flash and microprocessor... pretty sure it will end up on aliexpress soon
Hi, friend. I really need a help i flashed my mp5 4x (Vita clone) with an powkiddy x16 fw but the screen Is bigger AND my mp5 has 4.3" screen. I need a 4.3" mp5 4x fw, i have 2 fw from x6 and x16. How can i dump the fw from the mp5 can you help me? If you need the 2 fw to analize i can send for you.
@stacksmashing So debug mode allows you to view ram, but you cannot write to RAM, you cannot control program flow? I was thinking if you could write to RAM, you could write a program that dumps the flash to a serial port.
Then again, the original G&W line included games inspired by NES titles (including a "Super Mario Bros"!), so I do think this is a quite fitting tribute to both the G&W series and the 35th anniversary of SMB on the NES.

Brilliant I have a challenge I know some brilliant mind like you Will solve it I need help with a Korean nintendo wii Locked on error 003 after update there is way to fix it but it's a painful and I can't find a modchip if there any way through software please and a lot of thanks to you for your time and work
It be a huge money maker if Pokemon did something like this like they could make 4 games for the original A red one with charizard on the back A blue one with blastoise on the back A green one with venasaur on the back A yellow one with pikachu on the back A brown one with eevee on the back to release the unreleased Pokemon brown
This is an idea I've had and they could sell for 35.00 for each but if you wanted to bundle it be 100.00
They could even do it for gold and silver have one with ho oh and lugia
Геморрой всё это, что-б залить ром, нужен программатор ,проще воспользоваться сторонним эмулятором, а эту консоль нет смысла взламывать, у неё мало флеш памяти, и много игр не установить 🤔
Well, the STM microcontroller inside the device is both a surprise and not a surpise to me -- I thought this thing is NOAC based (as those cheap plug & plagues) but yeah, emulation is quite available today .
i hope the later to make a zelda version with (1987 The Legend of Zelda
) (1990 Zelda II: The Adventure of Link) but make the double screan for the old game & watch game
i never followed you before but only saw your Twitter Thread because MVG liked it ... and now i see your vid 3 days later in my recommended ... youtube algorhytm is scarry!
Sorry this arrived at my house, I like it..but I was hoping to add more games , can someone confirm that its 100% guaranteed that we will never be able to add roms?
I think that nintendo patch the roms with luna because they translate some. Game just patching the original rom inside the emulators of the console that is why you find the real rom and nintendo just hot patch the rom
Is there a way to put roms in G & Wmario?
Do you think it will be possible one day? I see that the biggest problem is that the usb is not connected to the memory but to the battery, that is why it is not connected to the PC. Anyone have any progress? Habrá alguna manera de meter roms en G&Wmario?
Creéis que será posible algún día? Veo que el problema mayor radica en que el usb no va conectado a la memoria sino a la batería, por eso no se conecta al PC. Alguien tiene algun avance?
now that it has been revealed that special equipment is needed to modify the device I've changed my mind about getting it. it is interesting to see how far this gets to.
Hey stacksmashing, how would you recommend to start learning your skills? I would love to learn all of this, but I don't know how or where to start): halp
Please tell from where did you learn this, and what books provide this kind of knowledge 🔥, I have zero knowledge about electronics and FPGA, how should I start, books reference ??
A good starting point for this type of stuff is to look into ROM hacking. By learning how to hack ROMs from 8-bit and 16-bit consoles you'll get to know how the consoles work, which will give you a good starting point for further hacking and reverse engineering.
That's some pretty weak encryption. I would have expected an encryption key on the areas you can't read from. I wonder though if Nintendo half assed this on purpose. I mean, it's not like you can't get a better emulated experience from a Nintendo Switch and since they aren't licensing games for this piracy is less of a concern. By putting in a token effort they can claim to fight hackers, but when it's hacked their sales will go up making them more money.
Hey i need help i kinda delete the hole 208 in 1 ds games and i need to know what ds and gameboy emulator i need for the sd chip tiny card to bring back the games
Sorry but I ordered this and its coming today. Amazon japan.. 2 days late. But I want to puts nes roms on it in the future. Will it be possible or not? If yes, when and if not. I'm gonna refuse delivery and have it sent back to amazon for a refund
...what do you mean when these things take time to do there isn’t really an estimated time for that also, if you bought it just for playing roms, there are much better things to do for that.
@TheDoge11 🎃 The video will become unlisted, 3 strikes and your account gets disabled. Nintendo is pretty infamous for copyright striking the simplest of things.
@stacksmashing Force of habit after working with sensitive electronics, I suppose... I know the risk is minimal on most modern equipments, I've just been taught electronics on chips that could be fried by doing that 🤷🏻♂️
Awesome video by the way, it's awesome seeing your hacking process and resourcefulness! What would you think of "modchipping" this device, for example hooking up a USB controller to the debug port to facilitate ROM loading and such? Maybe once the security is defeated we could see some homebrew on here?
Not bad but i think i will whit fur ture blue mini still hack. See the now defucked team xecuter had tool that installed on my MAC that installed the hack to run the True Blue Mini Ultradrive Pack for Sega Genesis USB Drive. I heard that they where parly arrested for selling roms under the True Blue Mini name. Altugh it make PlayStation Classic hacking easy my only blood with The PlayStation Classic had to was with no CD drive playing games like monster rancher was out of the question.
„Any update” after barely a week? :) that’s quite condescending & requesting. Lots of updates, you’d just have to click on the GitHub links in the description to see that.
@stacksmashing Apologize for the wrong choice of words. I should've said: Are you going to keep tinkering on this in the near future or is the video as far as you're gonna take it? I found the updates on github and so edit this to reflect. Great work on the proof of concept of course. Hoping it will go further.
Sorry for the stupid question but do you think it would be possible to extract the game to pit it on a GameBoy Advance ? I really want the clock on my GameBoy Micro Famicom
Awesome breakdown of this all! 🙂

29 likesWith only 128KB of storage that is very doubtful.
29 likesThis is Nintendo, I think Wolf 3d was the most violent game they had.
14 likesMost STM32 MCUs are perfectly capable of running Doom. You can even replace Mario with Doom on this one, should not be much of a problem. But you will never be able to put Mario back again.
28 likes@Jaroslav Houdek Why not? He flashed the SPI ROM multiple times, and each time he restored the previous change.
18 likesI think the final hack will be to replace one ROM with a loader and have a whole library on an added flash chip inside.

20 likes@Jaroslav Houdek You don't seem to understand. DOOM won't fit within 128KB of space, obviously. However I see now that there is actually a secondary 1MB flash chip inside the system as well, so it may be able to fit on there after all. It most definitely won't fit within 128KB tho.
7 likes@skins4thewin of course it won't fit to 128k,but it can run directly from the external Spi flash.
5 likes@John Długoszthe external flash is used to store the NES ROM. There is no such thing as NES Doom AFAIK. So the only way is to replace code in main memory. But due to the readout protection, you can't make a backup of the internal flash.
6 likes@Jaroslav Houdek Right, that's what I was just saying. I wasn't aware of the extra 1MB flash chip at first.

0 likesI said it wouldn't be powerful enough to run it & the storage wouldn't be enough & I was dead on right on both points.
@Equinox it had to be cut back in every conceivable way to not only make it fit but make it run on the hardware. It was pretty much exactly as I said it would be.
0 likes@skins4thewin I mean it's just doom with less good textures. I wouldn't discount it by saying it's not actually doom because it is doom just without a lot of the graphics.

19 likes@Pedro Gonzalez Exactly. So the logical solution would have been to do it ‘the old fashioned way’, eg. Hooking up to a PC via USB. But this is not possible, so all Nintendo could do is make a public apology.
104 likesOkey
5 likesFunnily enough Nintendo has once again helped scalpers and the second-hand market. I assume now those 1st gen G&Ws with the "language glitch" will be a hot commodity when they replace them with the fixed batch on store shelves, stock up now
56 likes@アップル(applchu) : Do you really think they will make a second batch? This is a limited edition item which will stop being sold in March, so there won't be a second batch.
30 likes@OMA2k depends on how popular a item is. They said they will actively manufacturer it until March. They could update it on the fly between now and then
23 likes@OMA2k i most certainly do.
15 likes@OMA2k dorsnt mean they will stop manufacturing it. Just like 3d all stars it will continue zo restock to its last day. I dont trust companies that says "limited" edition these days. I know for a fact that it happens a lot that limited edition get restocked even years after release.

0 likes@Shinji D Nintendo hates to help their popular cheap products in any way, that's why the 'classic' consoles and this are never in stock and always scalped. They're too good and they provide what most casual gamers would consider to be a great alternative to their hundreds of dollars Switch devices at a fraction of the profit margin.
5 likesSo Nintendo keeps making these products, mainly just to generated buzz, then clamps manufacturing/inventory to a bare minimum, and kills them off at the earliest point they can.
If Nintendo could make it so that nobody but Youtube influencers would get these products, and no retail releases at all, they would. These are just publicity stunts to them.
Couldn’t you just update the firmware with the USB port
0 likes@Isaac Chase No, you can't. Do you see the video? Or read the comments? The port is charge only.
2 likes@アップル(applchu) LOL..

Only to make a language error in the firmware that can't be updated because of that.
48 likesProbably because how easy it was to load ROMs to the NES Mini and SNES Mini ;). So this time it is a real treatment.
11 likes@NavidErde I mean yeah, that' a typical Nintendo move, but why should they care? You can play those games without much effort on almost every Device with customizable OS.
26 likesInstead they should be happy that their community is so cool and wants to make Homebrew and stuff.
1 likeIt's the chip

0 likes@NavidErde that was because of save mode, to fix broken consoles
0 likesMan, disappointing the data pins aren't hooked up on the usb port.

7 likes@GamerGuy78 the zelda one has a start and select and is hacked too already

8 likesI got 0% idea of what's going on but still liked the video
3 likes@Mr. Billy Bob it's a good video nonetheless
3 likesJust wondering for amateurs how does one achieve this kind of understanding? I'm walking through a CS degree but the most relevant course seems to be comp arch. Connecting to debug ports, dumping falsh/ram, trying to figure out the encryption algorithm, all these sound very interesting to me. I can probably follow along with enough tools but how do I do all of these on my own?
1 like@Levelworm I'm dealing with STM32 MCUs at work, often also using external memory and implementing firmware update mechanisms.
1 likeYou studied at E sports? Coool
0 likes@billigerfusel Thanks! I guess it's very useful to get realwork done in the field. Do you know how those work recruit? Do you have to come from a hardware background (A EE or Computer Engineering) or they more look for projects one did?
0 likesI understood very very little in this video. However, it was very well made and informative, nonetheless! Great work, and excited for how this community is so smart! Can't wait to see other games on this cool little device!
3 likesDo you think it'll ever become easy to flash your own ROMs onto the device? I couldn't justify picking it up for just Super Mario Bros, but if I could play Mario 3 that would be a different story 👀
2 likesI'd love to get into this stuff some day. The DS Lite is my favorite console and I wish more hacks were done with it, regardless of how useless they'd be. Awesome video.
1 likeVery well done, and smart indeed ! Thanks for making this. Brings me back to my electronic classes too :)

10 likes@Keiffer01 that's not what I said
0 likesI would personally add Game and Watch roms.

Soon there will be a way to make this gizmo a super cool G&W all in one emulator.
That was so informative! Thank you for your work and the awesome breakdown! I know you probably can't share the XOR key, but was it of any significance? Or just random bytes? Also, how long is it?
1 likeWow, nice work! Any ideas?

0 likesYou're going up against a stacked deck if the Embedded system is using the Flash in a XIP mode. My guess is that they may be moving some parts of it to RAM for faster execution. Unfortunately they are probably not using the Flash as memory storage so those handy Flash read/write and sector management functions would probably not have been moved to RAM :(
2 likesI cannot believe they did not completely lock down the SoC though... wonder if there are any test functions in RAM that they were using for manufacturing QA, possibly even provisioning (though I doubt for serial flash programming; that was prob. pre-programmed before going on the PCB).
I hope to see more nes roms get added, that would be amazing as only 3 games added in this modern game & watch feels limited and kinda wish they added more.

because he hacked it before release. It actually has to be measured in the T minus - time scale. Like a rocker before launch.
0 likesSince this thing is more or less made from off the shelf parts, wouldnt it be possible to upgrade the flash chip to something larger than 128kb, then load the original firmware on it (after an exploit to load further roms on it has been developed of course)

0 likesI really want to see people port other LCD games like Hippo Teeth, Coconut Joe and Wolf & Eggs.
9 likesStrange that they hotpatched the copyright date instead of just hacking the rom
74 likesReplies (14)
Would be easier to maintain a ROM that’s the same across many of their devices and hot patch locally per device.
4 likes@Chris Kader Not really, they never have to do any maintenance on any Game and Watch consoles. It's a situation where they simply have to change a few strings of text before recompiling the ROM, and then there would be no need to have an emulator stand-in for patching. It's cleaner to have everything run without bloat. It would be different if it were a more intensive type of patch, this is inconsequential.
3 likes@North The idea with keeping a rom that is original is that you can use it across many devices and not have to worry about it acting differently. And if it does, you hot patch it on the devices versus constantly making change sto the original and then hoping your changes work with new devices later.
8 likesKensen If you need to modify the string during development, it is much easier to change text in source code than to patch the ROM again. It is much better if the ROM is “clean”.
6 likesEven if you need to change the code behavior to fix bugs or add new functions, easier to do this in emulator than in the original code.
2 likes@Chris Kader Yes, this is why I specified inconsequential updates such as changing strings of text and not major upgrades like the new cheats. I understand that NES games weren't always cleanly developed and largely relied on assembly during development. I'm not referring to fundamental changes, even potentially fundamental. And there is still only one Game and Watch which plays SMB, which is this one, regarding the first sentence.
3 likesI do completely understand what you're getting at, though, if you're playing it completely safe.
@Chris Kader It would make perfect sense to make modifications to the ROM each time you are using it on a new device.
3 likesWTF are you even talking about?
Making hot patches via the emulator could also introduce errors.
@Coco as far as I understand, they do this because otherwise it would be harder to enforce copyright on the roms, in this way they're still using the same copyrighted game code as of 35 years ago. They've been doing the same thing with Super Mario 3D All Stars!
7 likesEDIT: typos
Marvelous...
0 likes@SkUnreal interesting! Yes that makes sense.
0 likes@SkUnreal That is crazy but totally understandable. Thanks for explaining!
0 likes@Anthony Iacono keep in mind it's only speculation, I don't know if that's actually the reason
0 likesModifying the ROM would be sacrilege.
0 likesThere's also another thing, it's probably impossible/too much work to bring the dev environment they used to build the original roms, so changing the actual code might not be an option.
0 likesHaving a set of emulator-side patches is also probably easier to experiment with, or they could easily run A/B tests ecc.
Great work and explained in such detail. Super!
0 likesAmazing! thanks so much for the overview. There's a lot of really advanced topics here but I got the basics of it and I hope we can do more fun stuff with it. BTW is there a way to keep the clock portion on all the time, its really annoying that it turns off when its supposed to be a WATCH! Is that a firmware setting?
0 likesThis is really cool. I wonder if you can somehow inject code by reprogramming the memory and get the firmware via this route.
0 likesI hope that we can put our own ROMS in someday! I definitely wanna mod in SMB2USA and SMB3 as well as some of the popular ROM Hacks for 1 & 3 like Extra Mario Bros. or Super Mario Bros. 3Mix!

Ain’t gonna happen
1 like@Andrew Oberhauser Woah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning! It can and inevitably will run other NES roms in the future with modding, although I can't say the same for games from other platforms.
1 like@VertiHippo127 But the modding won't be easy. The USB has no data line. It's only power. That means for the majority of people it won't be as easy as the NES mini by plugging it to a computer and running a program.
2 likes@Benny232 Still possible though :)
0 likesThe amount of knowledge and skill you have is really impressive!
1 likeWith the ability to load any game on there, I might just buy one of these.
1 likeGreat video, although I now realise there is no way I am going to be able to put ROMs on it if it takes this kind of effort
1 likeAwesome stuff!!! Please keep us updated on what else can be loaded into it. It would be awesome to load any rom in there... maybe even via USB!

2 likesI just bought one for $49.99. Was wondering how long it would take before it's hackable.
0 likesI'm wondering if using simple XOR in ROM encryption is like an Easter egg from Nintendo, reminding of 80s game protection schemes.
0 likeswhen i saw the game and watch, my first thought was man.. i hope someone can hack it to load roms. good job. hopefully it eventually can have any game you want on there.
0 likesGreat work! Next step: desolder old 128 KB flash module and solder in new 1 GB flash module and then load in all the NES games that ever came for the NES. It's only 8 pins you have to desolder, not that difficult.
1 likeWow! excellent break down. Thanks for sharing!
0 likesIt'd be cool to have a socket in place of the flash chip and have different chips loaded with different games.
0 likesVery impressive work. I also happened to have the TL866 but I don't have the clamp adapter and I don't think I am willing to invest the time to hack it. I am just curious about one thing: given that the encryption used is only XOR, why would the entropy of the flash bin be high?
0 likesJust a heads-up, the screws are called tri-wing screws.

22 likes@Horizonfan first of all, Zelda is really good actually and second, Metroid never got a Game & Watch console.
24 likes@Horizonfan by saying "zelda eww" you are also referring to breath of the wild, a link to the past, majora's mask, a link between worlds, twilight princess, wind waker, and link's awakening, which are all great games, the only good metroids are the first one, super metroid, that one 3ds remake, and the metroid prime games,

1 like@Tom Anderson I'm not disagreeing, but it would be cool to have both. Zelda 2 is super underrated and I think that part of why is because it was different from the other Zelda games. But if it wasn't a Zelda game like it wasn't intended, it would be an all-time NES classic, while it's just an " ok" game now.

0 likes@Pat Quearney It is now a year later and your prediction was 100% accurate. It has Zelda 2 and Links Awakening in addition to the regular Zelda game, but we already know that.
0 likes@Not So Entertainment System With the release of Metroid for the Switch, maybe a Metroid Game and Watch is on the horizon.
0 likes@Jerry Spann Last year was the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros series, this year was the 35th Anniversary of the Metroid series, but Metroid didn't get a Game & Watch release, not sure why not! I'd love to know why not..
0 likesThis year was also the 35th anniversary Zelda (& the 40th anniversary of Donkey Kong's arcade debut), and the Zelda Game & Watch was the last in the Game & Watch series(or maybe just the dual screen version Game & Watch)...
...and as much as we'd probably all love to see a Metroid release(as well as some sort of Game & Watch fan made back port of Metroid!)..
You have my respect. What a journey! 💯

In all seriousness, I love the video, opening up things to see how they work and poking them to see what happens is, I think, one of the most fun things you can do (outside of the intended use, of course) with such comparatively "simple" devices.
Replies (1)
"Can't run" is too strong statement. Even an 8-bit avr could (http://dmitry.gr/?r=05.Projects&proj=07.%20Linux%20on%208bit)... The real question is do you want it to.

0 likesAfter 2 minutes of video, I understand that I'll never do something like this, but you are awesome!!
0 likesThis is handy... I try to hack (and often fail) internet routers and they often have proprietary SOCs with no publicly available datasheet.... having a common microcontroller with a published datasheet is a real advantage for the hacker.
0 likesI bet nintendo released this knowing the community would hack it, and I'm sure they're following everything along closely for r&d to the next hardware release.
0 likesIt is amazing how you was able to hack this device before the official launch date :0 Also an detail on how to hack the device is next level 0/
2 likesAwesome video! I am currently trying to figure out if doing video out from one is feasible. I am not very knowledgeable about these smaller LCD panels. Are they mipi or standard lvds? Is there even such thing as a video splitter for the signal output or would I have to run jumpers from pins?

0 likesI am wondering about a couple of things... if there's a way to connect data to the usb c connecter AND if there will be a way to reroute the flash to read off of a micro sd card... I don't think it will be that easy but that is the only way I can see people putting more than 2 games on this thing.
1 likeI'm really hoping Nintendo does something similar to this maybe with the upcoming Zelda anniversary. Heck, I'd even be down for just Game & Watch products based off of classic Black Box games like Ice Climber, Clu-Clu Land, and Excitebike.
0 likesRegardless, even if that doesn't happen, at least we can hack, hehe. Homebrew Game & Watch, here we come~!!
Any update on the games themselves? The small modification done to the games' UI (Menu, high-score save, easy difficulty selection) and supposedly the "minus-world" glitch can be great to study, unless it's running an external script instead of being a new ROM.
0 likesAfter ten seconds of watching this I realise I will never be able to replicate it. Should have "...... if you are a guru with electronics" in the title. Still impressive hack if beyond my understanding.
0 likesMemory expansion and more nes roms would be freaking sweet!

1 likeExcelente análisis y trabajo.
0 likesI believe this encryption scheme is called XOR-based one time pad. That XOR stream you inferred was essentially the “one time pad”. The weakness in the implementation here is that there was no protection from using the one time pad multiple times because you could change the contents of the flash. Thanks for the super interesting video.
0 likesI think Nintendo really went out of their way to try to make this console as unhackable as possible even though it's already been hacked, a normal user would not spend their time doing this elaborate shit....
0 likesThe SNES mini and the NES mini were hackable because the power ports were also data ports, easy as pie.....
I was about to comment that it was probably a bit wise xor encryption since given how fast the games boot I wouldn’t think block encryption would be an option.
0 likes(Given the limited memory and architecture)
Nice work. Sad we cant use the usb to hack it. It leaves 99% of the buyers out if we cant do that :(

Unless they produce some ready-made kits, like they did for expanding the storage of the SNES mini.
7 likes@Souljastation 5 Havent heard about those. How you attach them if not soldering ?
0 likesGut gemacht. So ein schönes Stück Hardware. Es ist unglaublich, wie butterweich die Spiele auf der Hardware emuliert werden.
2 likesClearly sorcery. I bet that summon a portal to the Mushroom Kingdom is very similar to this. Very nice sorcery nonetheless!I wonder if we can get another roms run on this.
0 likesI imagine that there will be a 3D printable connector developed to allow mere mortals to pop open the G&W and load the NES/Famicom Mario catalogue on.
0 likesOtherwise it will be tricky without this kind of expertise.
Looks amazing though, so well done
sometimes I don´t know what Nintendo is thinking about. They make beautiful hardware and them use rubbys software. They should add a good colection of NES game and of course game and watch games
0 likesReplies (1)
Yes there is no reason they can't legally charge 200 for the device and add all the nes games they made.
0 likesSo exciting. It's a great device out of the box, so the potential to add roms will make this device such a great collector and PLAY item.
9 likesReplies (10)
Adding roms will be difficult, because it has just enough storage to store the built in games
1 likeHonestly if you want to play ROMs just get a PS Vita
1 like@acex222 this is way more portable than a PS Vita.
4 likes@Souljastation 5 is it really killing you that you can't play NES roms on the bus on any existing device? Are you travelling somewhere you can take a game and watch but not a vita, where the time required to travel is necessary that you bring a toy with you? Come on dude, live in the real world
1 like@acex222 Seriously this.
1 likeI get the novelty of playing different games on this, but there are so many devices that can do just that very well nowadays that why even bother.
I play NES games on my gba with a flashcard and SNES games on my New 3ds.
You could pick up a cheap Chinese anbernic device that can play nearly everything up to ps1 fairly well and for fairly cheap. Or even cheaper use your phone with a bluetooth controller.
¨It's a great device out of the box¨
1 likeThanks for the free laughs, sir.
@acex222 Unwarranted disparagement aside, I would like for this to be turned into a little NES console, it's perfect for that use.
0 likesThe Vita is bulky and heavy in comparison, and it's really overkill for that purpose.
@Anton Rickert You can get an 1Gbit (128 Megabyte) SPI for about $2. Looking easy enough to hand-solder.
0 likes@Souljastation 5 Nah, the screen in this device is too small to be enjoyable and the d-pad is too small to be comfortable as well. Pair it with being hard to hack by regular users (since the USB port doesn't have the data line for that), the tiny storage and the very slow processor, which makes it impossible to run anything more demanding than NES games, and all together makes this device a poor choice for retro emulation.
0 likes@OMA2k I'm almost finished super Mario on it (and I'm usually picky when it comes to controls, yes they're small but they're surprisingly not uncomfortable to use).
0 likesRegarding the screen, sure I have to use my reading glasses but that happens for the Vita too, so not much of a difference there.
0 likesLegend. Loading NES and G&W roms on this would be great!
2 likesReplies (1)
NES roms probably but, G&W? Is there any G&W rom that's dumped? I'd be very surprised. Not that it would be enough for emulation, some description of the graphics would be needed at the very least.
0 likesVery interesting to see them using a flash chip, but I guess it's a necessity when they have to deal with large ROMs.
1 likeEdit: Yeah, if I were to make this thing, I'd probably put the entire emulator engine as well as the games into the flash chip, and leave the MCU firmware quite primitive, only having it read and decrypt the flash chip, load it's entire contents into RAM, and jump to program's entry point. What's the size of flash chip in your case? Does it fit fully into MCU RAM?
That was super interesting! Great breakdown.
0 likesCool, hopefully you can fix their language bug 😆
37 likesThis is promising to look at! Would be cool to see if you could add more NES and/or Game & Watch games. Heck, maybe RetroArch.
0 likesWow that's crazy. How you learn to understand this stuff I have no idea.
0 likesIt would be awesome if you can import other NES titles in the future. That would make this little console the bargain of the century.
cool stuff - wonder which mappers the emulator supports - would love to get a few extra games on there - dragon buster II e.t.c.. 1MB spi flash - could have a fair few extra games on there!
0 likesGood work, thanks for the informative video.

2 likesI have my old ds ready to play nes games, seeing this looks like a really hard job
0 likesNow the modders need to figure out a way to squeeze a debugger chip inside the device and connect it to the USB data pins so you can upload ROMs over USB 😎
0 likesNow we need someone to write a Game & Watch emulator for NES, and we can build the Game & Watch retro-console that Nintendo SHOULD have built!
0 likesthis case is so awesome, i would put a Raspbery to run some game boy games!

1 likeKind of surprised they patched the copyright in memory as opposed to just editing the program ROM itself. They had no problems fixing NES games back in the GameCube days, so I wonder what changed...I'm curious if they outsourced the development to a third party and this is IP license related, which would be silly...again...

0 likesOh so that's why it can "quick resume" between the two SMB games, they're both in the memory at all times, clever
10 likesWell, I was thinking of buying one of these, but I've seen old LCD screens with more sophisticated CPUs and larger 8 pin ROM chips.. This thing is just a piece of e-waste..
1 likeVery disappointed! 😔
I had the dumb doubt that if I would be able to turn on the G&W without the battery connected since I want it to be ON forever as a desk clock without killing the battery. This video helped to notice that it is indeed possible.

0 likesSeriously, you are a freaking genius
0 likesi actually think that, for a cheaper price point (maybe like 15-20 dollars each) it would be a very interesting idea for Nintendo to release games like this on the smaller Game and Watch style consoles - like, imagine something like a Zelda G&W? I know that this is a special case because of the anniversary but it would be pretty cute :3

1 likeIf Sega made those handhelds the same size as the Mario Game & Watch, I'd probably actually buy them.
2 likesI guess I shouldn't be surprised that they're hotpatching the ROM data in the emulator. That's basically what they did for the Wii special edition NES games (Donkey Kong, Super Mario Bros).

If that could be done, then figuring out how to add the ROMs to it, you'll have a portable NES package. Since the USB data ports aren't connected it will never be as easy as the NES mini. Maybe people with the tools and know how though will provide a service you can send your game and watch in and have it reflashed.
6 likes@littlefreak3000 yeah I know they explained that part in the video... but now they know where the data is, I'm wondering if they can connect the data to the port OR take the exsiting port out and putting a whole new one on there with a modded chip that connects to the data... I don't know if it's possible but since they've isolated the data point it's not impossible right?
1 like@littlefreak3000 otg via usb-c port can be?
0 likes@Jeff Cross Impossible? No. Even remotely simple? Definitely not.
3 likesIf these were being produced on a much more massive scale, and Nintendo was openly planning to make many more units in the coming years, it might be worthwhile for someone to make/sell a custom programming device/clamp that could do the process faster.
0 likes@Jeff Cross I think you're on a reasonable track there.
1 like@Dan teh Chad I would SO love to buy one of these kits to make my self... I DID buy 2 of them hahah... I would be even more into it if they can add another screen hahah but that might be asking for too much lol.

0 likesI guess you have to be one hell of a coder to hack this thing.would it be easier to just solder in a fpga chip to replace the old one?
0 likesI'd love to play Mega Man 1 through 6 on it!
1 likekinda interesting that Nintendo went with a STM32 actually, its not as easy to load a rom but that will make it possible to load own firmware on it and of course loose the original firmware forever.
0 likesim not too familiar with the STM32 and if its even possible to read its firmware/code, I thought that it was only to write to (unless of course reverse engineer it), I dont have one so cant really toy with it :)
it took me a moment to realize why the gameplay was censored then i realized why.
0 likesvery epic release, vouch for contribution. :sunglasses:
29 likesthe super mario game and watch has made me realize that why has someone not tried to make a custom game and watch being able to emulate all the nes, snes, game boy and more games, i mean a raspberry pi seems more than sufficient to do the task but idk.
0 likesI am sure being that it’s more difficult people will sell hacking services for these things. I just want adventure island 2 added and I’ll be happy!
0 likesReminds me of when I broke apart my joycons by accident
1 likeIt would be awesome if RetroArch gets ported to this, because that means you could play the Game & Watch Collection games released on the Game Boy and Game Boy Advance.
1 likeWould there be enough memory for a game boy rom? I'm thinking of Game & Watch Gallery.

0 likesAh yes, Super [Censorship Blur] Bros.
0 likesA childhood favorite.
Man... you better me making like $100k a year. This stuff is amazing and immensely interesting.
0 likesI'll bet they've kept this up because of the can of worms they opened up with attacking ROM preservation sites a few years ago... Since then we've not heard anything... I wonder why... Would be fucking hilarious if they retracted the attack after being caught red handed using those sites to increase SNES library on the switch virtual console...
0 likesSo the reason it's so expensive is because it's effectively a small reproduction of the NES that lacks the ability to install other games?
6 likesStupid move, Nintendo. Should have added a game slot so you could sell mini NES games for it.
I fail to see the value on a piece of plastic locked with nothing but probably the most ported Nintendo ROM ever and a mod of it for clock mode.
0 likesWhat is your approach for dumping this chip?
0 likesI have had great success dumping the F2 and F4 chips (rdp1) using vcc glitching on the system bootloader. Perhaps this would work on the H7B0 also?
I was also able to dump F2 at rdp2 by a double vcc glitch.
Replies (2)
Yep that’s the plan, glitch on vcore while in the bootloader
0 likesYou think you can glitch it without removing the chip from the pcb or did you buy a bunch of these for this purpose? :)
0 likesIt's only been 2 days and there's already hackers messing with this xD
0 likesGreat video! A quick question, are you self-educated on this stuff?

0 likesI can't wait to see the zelda one hacked!
0 likesAwesome video man! Unfortunately with 128kb it doesn't look like you'll be able to fit many roms on there aside from the earlier generation titles that range from 25-65kb. But most NES games after that are 129-513kb from looking at my rom list.

0 likesWill you release a tutorial how to load custom Roms on it?
2 likesby going on in the video I realized that the XOR encryption was used in the classic Game Boy games as well, if I remember correctly.
0 likesYou lost me at tri-wing screws..
7 likesSo the emulator in this does patching on the fly, that's very interesting.
2 likesNintendo did the same for the emulator used for Super Mario 3D All-Stars and it seems to make things easier for them as they don't have to fiddle around in completed code.
If is possible to add roms to it, I will add SMB2 and SMB3 to keep the theme. Maybe Zelda 1 as a bonus.
0 likes1:33, look there it’s written E3! And in the 2021 E3 there was a new Zelda Game and Watch! Coincidence? Think not!
1 likeI'd like to add the US version of SMB2, SMB3, and the original Mario Bros to it. With Dr. Mario as possible bonus. If there's enough space left, then throw Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine on there too.
1 likeAh, this is the "I'll post a video of this soon" video - nice one :)

1 likeProbably not, since the RAM only has 128 KiB. SMB3 is 4MB.
0 likes@Game Person Human sd card adapters incoming. I would buy one.
0 likes@Game Person Human The chip has 1.4MiB of SRAM, so that is not going to be a barrier. SMB3 is 384KiB.
0 likesAh, thank you. I'm not very technologically inclined.
0 likesAlso, SD card adapters? Really?
@Game Person Human I think someone will make an sd card interface eventually, as they did for the SNES classic mini.
0 likesSucks that Nintendo didn't include Super Mario Bros. 2 USA and Super Mario Bros. 3 too. Hopefully you can add the two games in. I'm just worried about the limited amount of storage space.
1 likeYou rock — thank you very much!.. Can't wait to play Mega Man on it. ^______^

Not nearly enough RAM. Maybe a cut down version such as the 32x port. Wolf3D or Blake Stone will run just fine though.
0 likesIt literally has 1mb of storage. You ain’t playing shit on this thing.
0 likesAndrew Oberhauser Some Doom ports were fit into 2 megabytes with multiple levels. And they probably didn’t even use compression. Back in the 90s I had a copy of Quake with some multiplayer mods (but only 1 level) on a single floppy disk.
0 likesAnd finally, since you need to open it anyway, SPI Flash chip should be trivial to replace.
@noop9k this has 1mb. And your average modded isn’t going to replace the chip. There won’t be a scene for this thing.

0 likesThe 2020 copyright isn't the only thing that's hotpatched into the rom. An original copy of SMB1 would unlock hard mode, after you beat the game and it would stay in hard mode until you turn off the NES.
0 likesSince the G&W doesn't have a possibility to "turn off" the NES, they included a toggle for normal & hard after you beat the game once.
I don’t understand any of this but it was cool

1 likeYou could try a Fault injection attack to try to bypass the Firmware protection. The only downside is that if not done correctly you could damage the chip and would need to buy a new device or probably just buy the stm32 mcu and once you get it working standalone attack the real device ;)

0 likesPretty interesting and impressive, they've got a full NES emu running on the UC!?
1 likeReplies (5)
Nintendo had a NES emu running on the GBA over a decade ago.
0 likes@Powerlated Wait what? Source? Also, a GBA CPU is somewhat closer to a SoC than to a UC in terms of power (but then again, that specific UC in the G&W is pretty beefy... and in fact might be pretty close to a GBA, not only in terms of performance but in architecture too IIRC).
0 likes@The Cheaterman Powerlated is mistaken. Nintendo ported some of their NES games to gameboy, but it wasn't emulated.
0 likes@HamburgerExplosion Alrighty, thanks for clarifying :-)
0 likes@The Cheaterman No, he is wrong.
0 likes22 Nintendo developers disliked the video 🤣🤣😂😂

0 likesThey should of made the thing where you can download games for a fee at least so you wouldn't have to be a rocket scientist to know how to hack into the thing.
0 likesMaybe they will have another release of this where it will have that feature and have a chance at downloading games for it!

1 likeReplies (13)
But it isn't.
0 likes@Mo Ral Depends on what you mean by "easily hackable", but considering the equipment to hack it is pretty cheap and the security is close to being broken I'd say it qualifies.
0 likes@blahdelablah it would be easier if there was a data connection on usb c. Wich is expected on a divice this price range. Imo. And there is not enough space on it.
0 likes@Mo Ral If there was more space on it it would have been overengineered.
1 like@blahdelablah maybe this would lead to a more quality product.
0 likes@Mo Ral Not really, it would just jack up the cost.
0 likes@blahdelablah so you think nintendo wants the nes mini and snes mini to be hacked?
0 likes@blahdelablah often the microchips for companies are cheaper because they buy larger quantities of them.
0 likes@Mo Ral "so you think nintendo wants the nes mini and snes mini to be hacked?" No. Read what I said. I'm suggesting Nintendo doesn't want any of their products to be hacked.
0 likes@Mo Ral "often the microchips for companies are cheaper because they buy larger quantities of them." Yes, but that has nothing to do with it, because buying 100,000 1GB flash ROMs will still be cheaper than buying 100,000 8GB flash ROMs. In engineering, you optimise the design based on providing the required functionality at the lowest cost. It makes no sense for Nintendo to buy larger flash ROMs when they wouldn't use the space.
1 like@blahdelablah but why had nes mini and snes mini consoles etra storage space, then?
0 likesLike the battery in the game and watch is from the joycons.
0 likes@blahdelablah yeah. Maybe one to two roms. The problem is that i see no other way right now than to erase all the existing os on the game and watch.
0 likesYou could probably make a expansion board for the debug ports.
Right now looks like the best solution for 'hack' the game and watch most effective. You could probably add extra storage for a nother os that way.

0 likesCan you just write a program to memory that will read the flash?
1 likeReplies (2)
Unfortunately not, any access to the data bus causes a hard fault
0 likes@stacksmashing So debug mode allows you to view ram, but you cannot write to RAM, you cannot control program flow? I was thinking if you could write to RAM, you could write a program that dumps the flash to a serial port.

0 likesReplies (1)
Then again, the original G&W line included games inspired by NES titles (including a "Super Mario Bros"!), so I do think this is a quite fitting tribute to both the G&W series and the 35th anniversary of SMB on the NES.

A good starting point for this type of stuff is to look into ROM hacking. By learning how to hack ROMs from 8-bit and 16-bit consoles you'll get to know how the consoles work, which will give you a good starting point for further hacking and reverse engineering.

1 likeUuuhhhhhhh… I’ll pay you to do mine. 😀
0 likesThat's some pretty weak encryption.

What would you think of "modchipping" this device, for example hooking up a USB controller to the debug port to facilitate ROM loading and such? Maybe once the security is defeated we could see some homebrew on here?
No worries! Security is defeated already, we managed to dump the STM32 flash too😁 so will be interesting to see what we can put on this thing

0 likesReplies (2)
„Any update” after barely a week? :) that’s quite condescending & requesting. Lots of updates, you’d just have to click on the GitHub links in the description to see that.
0 likes@stacksmashing Apologize for the wrong choice of words. I should've said: Are you going to keep tinkering on this in the near future or is the video as far as you're gonna take it? I found the updates on github and so edit this to reflect. Great work on the proof of concept of course. Hoping it will go further.

It’s in the video description
0 likes@stacksmashing ah, but how would simply showing the names be enough for a CW claim?
0 likes@Benjamin Andrew They claimed any scene where a game was shown on the device
0 likesCan't wait to play Mario 3 on it!! So many possibilities, drill new holes for buttons and shoulders. Mini Nes/GB/SNes on the go. 👌🏽👌🏽
