It depends on the quality of writing done for Pinkie Pie at the time. Episodes like TMPP's & FPK do write her as a simple minded buffoon.
But we've seen in Baby Cakes/Party of One/Friend in Deed. That she can have more depth beyond her acting around.
Generally I hold that she isn't good with logic, but has a high EQ-i. She lives to make others happy by being hyper, she often does understand the social context she's within very well...
I'm going to point out here that in TMPP the way that they ended up separating Pinkie from the clones is the fact that the clones DIDN'T have hidden depths.
Then how did they make it obvious which was the real PP? At the beginning, PP mindlessly pursues 'fun'. Well her clones equally also pursue 'fun'. How can we guarantee that the sad Pinkie is the real Pinkie Pie? Why not have a obvious visual distinction like with Discord.
In Po1, she becomes upset because her friends seem to not want to be around her any more. Being upset about that, isn't being insecure; but actually quite normal.
TMPP like most of Dave's work, is to set up slapstick.

From Baby Cakes we see that PP can enjoy stuff that isn't "fun". The whole point of the smile song/AFID was that PP only wants her friends to smile/happy. Which makes PP's actions at the start of s3ep3 undermining by making her mindlessly obsessing over "fun" despite what harm it causes others...
The story/creators made it quite obvious to ANY audience as to which Pinkie Pie was the real Pinkie Pie. At the beginning of the episode she didn't want to miss having fun with her friends, a logical extension of her insecurities about her friends, which were established in Party of One. TMPP was partially intended to point out that Pinkie Pie is NOT a fun-obsessed, party pony, but actually does have her hidden depths
Pinkie was not "mindlessly" pursuing 'fun,' she wanted to be able to attend all her friends' 'fun' events. A barn rasin' is more hard work than fun, yet Pinkie wanted to be in attendance at that as much as swimming at the swimming pool.
Being upset about her friends not wanting to be around her is normal, but her reaction (breakdown) wasn't, suggesting deeper-rooted insecurities.
The real reason for a non-visual distinction is so that the animators could hide her in the crowd of Pinkie Pies.

Loosing her in the crowd isn't needed. Discorded ponies are very obviously different, but Twi acted as if they were normal. If real-PP 'was' important 'character' wise, we need that kinda distinction. Even if it's just a slight colour change.
She runs around knocking into Twi/Rarity (insulting R), annoying RD, speaking then leaving AJ. These actions are outright annoying, not those of the socially competent PP. I say 'mindless', because she seemed not to care for their feelings.
Man this takes me back.. maybe too repetitive but it's such a good melody for a Pinkie song.
