A little history: someday (it was around 2015) i said to my grandma that there was a thing called Microsoft account. She didn't know what it is so she let me do it (bad idea)

Fun fact: this is possible without a flash drive if you have Windows 8 or any other windows version after 8: instead of using a flash drive and going into "repair windows", at the lock screen, press the shutdown button, then hold shift and press the restart button. When you're in advanced startup options, you can release shift

Ive been doing this for years now but with utilman.exe. Just rename cmd.exe to cmd_old.exe and then rename utilman.exe to cmd. In the log screen then click accessibility options and boom you have cmd, where you can activate the hidden admin account or reset your password.

I always used Linux on USB for that. Easy and doesn't require you to do the commands.
Or if you want to actually use some commands in Linux there's a tool "chntpw" which can do that without copying/replacing those executables. Also "chntpw" itself can be booted from usb ;)

I saw pain as you formatted a 128 gig drive. If it's that large just deploy ventoy on it so you can boot multiple windows isos and have a storage medium at the same time.

Since this trick also can get you admin access, is there a way to load a USB with a windows installation without admin perms? Rufus needs administrator permissions, and even though you can extract the ISO using something like WinRar and copy the files, I don't think that makes it be recognized as bootable. Also, instead of using cmd for all of it, when you get cmd on the X drive, you can just run notepad, and goto File > Open and rename files from that menu, though you need to right click > refresh after each rename. Also, one other thing, a friend of mine has windows 20H2, but it doesn't ask for administrator password, it just only shows X drive, it did that before 20H2 even came out, do you know why that might be/any workarounds? sorry for the long comment, multiple things in one.

@Enderman Check out Ventoy. You install it to a usb stick and then you copy over your *.iso files to the partition it makes. When you boot from it, you get a boot menu for every iso you have on your stick. No more extracting and writing single iso's one at a time.

Enderman, I have an option to reset the password without USB, when you are in the lock screen, click on the power button, now keep on holding the Shift key and press Restart(while pressing Shift key) now the password box will go and it will show Please Wait (and a loading sign) now it will go to advanced recovery mode, then there should be an option of Command Prompt, click on that and then change the password. Simple

Windows Defender should revert the changes for you when you want to actually use this. So this specific variant of the method doesn't work if Windows Defender is on. There is a different file that you need to replace, utilman.exe, that isn't covered by Windows Defender. To trigger that one you click on the accessibility UI button on the login screen.

Every change like this where you replace a file owned by TrustedInstaller with one that isn't will result in a "fix" on the next windows update resulting in a revert of the change. This should not be how it works. It's my os instance. When I make a change it should stay until I change it again. This kind of behavior is the most annoying thing in windows 10

I changed cmd.exe with the on-screen keyboard (osk.exe). The on-screen keyboard can be enabled in the lower right corner as you enter your password. After restoring the password, I ran the installer again from the pendrive and changed it as it was before. For this you can also use some kind of linux distro and built-in file manager, if someone does not want to type commands

It's easy to remove the Win 10 password with Hiren's Boot CD on a flash drive plus it has several recovery and repair tools. Easy and Free.

Easy way : When your pc starts , reboot it for a while . After 3-4 reboots your pc will be started "Automatical Repair". From Automatical Repair you can start cmd. Full working cmd with administator privillages.

Probably if you have other antivirus it works? I don't know but with default Windows Defender you can't use this method anymore, it will also detect Ultiman.exe and DisplaySwitch.exe

This is the reason I do full disk encryption on my laptop, because Windows logon security is a joke.
In the days where even Android encrypts the storage by default, we still have the most recent Windows that still store files in plain text.

I had a Windows Vista computer and i did set a password for it. But the USB ports said "f*ck you" and they stopped working. The computer didn't recognized the keyboard, so it couldn't boot. Last year, one of the USB port on the front of the PC started working... and Windows asked me for password. I tried anything but nothing worked... it was still asking for the password... Sadly, I don't have that PC anymore :/

take ownership and give yourself permissions to sethc.exe

sfc.exe VERIFYFILE= C:\Windows\System32\sethc.exe

So i really reset my brother password no usb need .1 restart your computer and you did restart press shift 5 times will show that blue screen and press troubleshoot press reset and press remove everything WAIT THAT WILL REMOVE ALL DATA USE ON REAL COMPUTER OR VMWARE

I know easier way to do this.
Step 1: create bootable USB drive with Linux.
Step 2: run Linux
Step 3: swap cmd and sethc USING LINUX FILE EXPLORER.
Step 4: run Windows
Step 5: press shift 5 times
Step 6: create new password using CMD
Step 7: shut down Windows
Step 8: run Linux again and again swap cmd and sethc
Step 9: run windows and play your favourite game

i used this on my dad's work laptop and they sent a mail to him asking why he 'hacked' his laptop to get admin perms. now that method doesn't work anymore, the cmd window disappears after pressing the utilman icon. (i used the utilman strategy.)

How to get laid:
Step 1: lock your gf pc

Step 3: unlock the pc using enderman tutorial
Step 4: success

Instead of sethc.exe I used to use Utilman.exe and get the cmd prompt that way. Also the swap can be done with a linux live cd
