This is my favorite video that I have ever seen, and I am extremely disappointed that it doesn't have more views. The messages are deep, the humour is very subtle and beautiful. The animation is perfect. And it all just ties up well. There are no questions to be made, no answers found. It is merely the world in all it's random and ugly beauty. Thank You for making this.
That part at the end with the zooming out of the city just made me realise how weird stuff like this is happening in real life too, everywhere. Our entire world is a massive network of events. It doesn't seem like it happens, because you can't see it, but it does. It's all out there. In the 'External World'.
Every couple of years I'll come back to this video and it still amazes me. This animation just has an incomprehensible atmosphere that I've never seen in any other media
The boy playing the piano is David O'Reilly. The man who keeps yelling at him is the perfectionist in himself that keeps getting frustrated and angry because he doesn't feel like he's doing good enough making these videos. But he can't do anything right because the perfectionist in himself is constantly pressuring himself to do it over and over again, and as a result he gets nowhere.
The audience in the video is us. In order for David O'Reilly to make this amazing animation that won a crazy amount of awards, he had to kill off the part of himself that was constantly pressuring him to do it again, but better. The video concludes by David O'Reilly publishing the video (playing the piano) and everyone's so taken aback because he's created something so amazing.
That's what I take from it. I can't speak for the rest of the video, maybe it's just meant to be surreal and it's a reflection of what goes on in David's head.
I like the way you think the piano boy is David O'Reilly, that's really interesting. You see, the piano boy scene started the animation; scattered throughout the whole video then finally, ended it. So it makes sense when you said that's he when he's making videos. Each time we see the scene, the man's punishment for the boy's mistake get harsher: bare hand, a fish (in my theory, this is a reference OR the punishment was meant to be hurtful and now somewhat disgusting; or just for the comedic side) and a gun (he has a gun but slapped the boy with it, the guns is more likely for threatening). It makes sense when you said the boy was he David himself. He was forcing himself to do better through violence, then he decide to stop it (the boy shoot the man), though it wasn't easy to run away from the mental scars it has caused to him. At the end, he looks at the audience and realize, he practiced because he wanted to show them, to show us something remarkable, not because for the punishment he has been giving to him to stop. And eventually, he plays smoothly, tills, the end.
This is really enlightening to me. There are a lot of hidden messages and deeper meanings in here that i have not noticed but i have understood some of them. The title "The External World" makes so much sense to this. This video has a solipsistic view and theme, and to shorten what that means, basically one's self is real and exists while everything else isn't real and is "external". For this man to make such an interesting and deep meaning in this video is just outstanding. This man has my respect for "thinking outside the box".
I really like how this makes fun of "deep", artsy, pretentious stuff in a few places, while still being genuinely deep in others itself.
Making fun of people's over-dependence on medication to feel good/hypochondria (Go Fuck Yourself and Nothing is Wrong Hospital) The horrible monotony of sitcoms, and many other things.
However, my personal favorite, or the one that fascinated me the most was the one where the girl made an epileptic worm have a seizure just to use his convulsing body as a vibrator...then feels guilty afterward when he dies... Just...man.
if you notice, when the epileptic worm dies, her crying is animated as "tear" and "puddle," but at the boy's recital at the end, she's crying real tears. To me that implies that she was shedding crocodile tears. The fact that she continually grabbed tissues and hurt the tissue box seems to solidify her as being the personification of selfishness. Or at least someone who will harm others just to get what they want.
Man, I really love you! This work is beautiful! The metaphors... the irony.... I can't explain how thankful I am! (also, that Adventure Time episode was gorges! You two, guys, are awsome!!!)
I've been driving myself insane looking for this video because I forgot to save it. I was convinced that it was deleted from Youtube, and all I remember is that you also worked on Her, and this was definitely a real thing. I spent the last 2 hours going through the IMDB credits, hoping that you uploaded it somewhere else, and I FOUND IT! IT"S STILL HERE! YES! IT WASN"T A FEVER DREAM! VICTORY IS MINE! I am going to share this everywhere and then sleep like the dead, thank you for putting this out in the world, and please archive it in multiple places if it isn't already, so that this is never lost.

No matter what, the external world will get in our way of our desires, and as we are part of the external world to others, we will invariably get in way of others as they try to fulfill their own desires. It's impossible to be perfect, and there is no purpose but the purpose we create, so the best thing anyone can do is to try and be the best we can be, to ourselves and others.
When I saw the adventure time episode, i recognized the animation IMMEDIATELY.

Father + Son at piano: Abuse and the way it escalates very quickly and how the effects can be felt even after the abuser is gone.
Depressed Man: Pills are just a way of not dealing with the problem + false happiness.
Hospital: Psychiatry. They create disorders for normal human emotion and people buy into it as a way to escape/laziness.
Japanese cartoons: How shit can be so messed up but if the characters are cute it's deemed okay. Might be a commentary on increased sexuality at younger ages
Looks deep and meaningful and but reminds me of when I tried to shoehorn in deep an meaningful into my own videos. Stunning animation but if you are trying to look for some deep and abstract meaning you have fallen to the many distractions this piece has pulled before your eyes.
If you look you will see the animation knows this and plays with it, plays with you. At the end of the day it is nothing but an awesomely fun portfolio piece. Great job 10/10.
This was beautiful. I found the madness mixed with the subtle cynicism and disdain for society very appealing. It reaches the dark parts of your brain like a fine german beer or a very velvety piece of dark chocolate.

I believe I've finally found "the equivalent of shit taking a shit" as mentioned by James Rolfe years ago. Still, I never imagined that someone would have the balls to actually visualize it. It's almost unbelievable (in both a good and a bad way).

im still processing what the fuck i just watched because i loved every second of it
i feel like talking about hidden messages on these kind of videos is pretty lame but part of me also has that wishful thinking that perhaps every single second could have a metaphore behind it even if there wasnt the intention from the creators to begin with i mean, i feel like ive seen other bizarre videos with 2 characters portraing underaged cartoons having sex, but sometimes it feels more like shock value instead of saying, "hey, kids cartoons have sexual innuendos!"
overall i im not criticizing anything in this video, just laying out some thoughts, because honestly this was aweosome to watch and will probably check it again in the future

I love the attention to detail, even amongst all the minimalism. The boy playing the piano is actually hitting the right keys that coincide with the melody, for instance. Perhaps this is why this short fascinates me so.
I havn't loved something in such a way since Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt. I know it would take a godly fuck ton of effort but for the sake of my brain and many others you should turn this into a show and sell it to Adult Swim
I feel like I understand this film in a way I can't explain, like this is speaking the subconscious language of the 21st century. The imagery used here is so incredibly familiar to me, so much a part of my mind, that simply seeing it resonates deeply. This is like being inside the mind of modern human.
The limitlessness of interpretation that is found at this point may indeed be a bad infinity; bad in the precise sense that it represents the breakdown of common understanding and allows for a range of (mis)understandings that are potentially infinite in number. This comes about because there is no telling exactly what interpretation another will arrive at as the result of the use of such words. It is not unreasonable to suppose that all sufficiently developed intelligent species know abstract logic and are not unfamiliar with the particular mode used in this book (shortly constructive logic based on type theory). There may be a multitude of conventions in notation possible and perhaps some variation in the basics for this theory used by intelligent species outside of Earth, but problems presented by that might be solvable.

I re-watched it again and now I have understood most of the messages in it. The tone that boy kept playing remind me so much of Resident Evil outbreak file 2 main theme, look it up if you are interested.
Actually, yes. I'm trying to improve my skill in reading films, but with this I don't know where to start. I think I have ideas regarding the boy on the piano, the acme retirement home and the turd-baby, but any other interpretations would be nice.

I thought this was just gonna be another random animation. But this...in all of its chaos and dark humor, it has a rhythm to it, a strange sort of beauty. It's not dark just to be dark, but as a reflection of ourselves, and where we've let ourselves get to. What we've let happen to us. But even beyond that, it uses the dark to enhance the beauty, the profane to enhance the magnificent. This...is just awesome.
Oh David, there are so many things that are fucked up with this animation that it can only be as tragic and overwhelming as life itself. Everything I saw was so unexpected, and some of it's relatable with situations away from this animation, like the part when the old black person is getting beat by the firemen. Even though this is truly crazy, and outright insane, It earns my respect.
i don't know but i really really liked the way this work shows the ideas, and you can say anything but is great, if you're not agreed with the concept just enjoy the amazing visual work an thats all.

This is too deep for words. This man made this to show how he perceived the world. Think about it. How the kid still got hit after his father died. The children porn shit. The freedom, then getting beaten when he woke up. The medication for depression. It is perfect. (:
Well, that's a matter of interpretation. Personally, I think a lot of the skits have deeper meanings, and underlying themes, while others truly are random and absurd. I believe this mix is intentional, to bring out mixed reactions from the viewer, and force them to think about each piece, not only as a whole, but individually. Just because your interpretation is that of "random BS," that doesn't make you right. Unless the creator creates a detailed analysis of the work, we will never fully know.
It's possible that the creator made this video in order to provoke thoughts from people. It may also be possible that the creator has his own original meaning to this. It may even be possible that there is no meaning and the meaning to all of this is up to the viewer.
But you can definitely tell that he uses words and imagery and events to make our minds pulse with something. Well, that's my take on it.
Because of all the randomness of it, the theme I think of here is "happenings".

Hmm... I enjoyed this. Mostly my "What the... and Shock" moments were good. This piece is nice, but I don't see it as a piece with a message or meaning, but it seems like it is trying to be that. It's almost like there is some terribly aligned symbolism with these images and actions, which due to being executed incorrectly, stop the message, if on exists, from being seen clearly, even to those who study such things.
I enjoyed it purely for what I saw it as. An interesting little animation.
At first this appeared as a random jumble of meaningless cartoons-- but, I don't know how to explain. It has, definitely, a dark feel to it and is very odd, but appealing in some way. I like it. Other animations I like are just because they are stupid and funny and there's not much to gain from going back and seeing it again. But this one... If I had more time, I would watch it five more times because it's not just funny at times, but it seems to have a deep meaning and beauty to its weirdness.
Rather than tell me pretentiously to "do the math", we could actually have discussed this.
You can attach context to literally anything and have it make sense. I could sit here and make convoluted metaphors all day long, but that doesn't mean it wasn't convoluted, and wasn't made by me, rather than the artist.
Really that scene kind of shows off the overall idea of this video to me. The louder [and stupider] your video is, the more it will annoy people.
I'm not sure how to feel about this. It wasn't psychedelic, it had rhyme and reason. Everything about it made sense in some way. It was a mishmash of every animation theme I've ever seen. Shock, depression, parody, slapstick. It wasn't random in a chaotic way, just hard to follow. Even after writing this, I'm still unsure of what to think of it.
Longest seventeen minutes I've ever endured. It was a horrific and disturbingly beautiful work of art. Somehow I feel older now. I'll be back to watch it again... and again.

Well, personally, I thought the hair-eating thing was really, REALLY weird and kind of random (and not in the cool, AT kind of way I'm used to). But I don't know if kids would be quick to make the same assumption you did, I mean, they're kids, right?
I didn't think the animation was unsettling as such. Ren and Stimpy. That's unsettling right there.
I think that the child and the person who was hitting him were the same person. They are meant to represent the relationship of the artist with his art and with himself. The struggle that one goes through when trying to create something beautiful to the exact standard that the person holds themselves.
The easiest way for you to defend this would be for you to actually analyze this. Just waving it off as being deep and meaningful doesn't actually mean much if you don't take a minute to back it up.
Watching it now in 2018 I notice that it starts and it ends with the same music and alike scene, so I can put it in loop while I'm at work for background noise when I need it. It made me cry again tho (That scene about child abuse still touches me a lot). I still love this work, I still watch it.

The overly sexual kids characters speaking a foreign language is representative of the sexual content being presented in young children cartoons, sometimes subliminally. The Frisbee from bad fatherly advice comes back to hit the dad who said "it's just animation, it has no real effects on him." I think almost each sketch has its own meaning.
Agree. I want to remark the foreign cartoon is Japanese, as you can see Japanese characters (or sort of) in the intro. Japanese shows have a trend to be more liberal in the sex department.
After reading your first comment, I was thinking "Hah, this guy is just overstating and over-analyzing just to get thumbs up." But then I went back to rewatched some of the scenes and paralleled all of them to real life problems.
Moments later I was saying to myself: "Holy piss, he's right."
It's a stream of consciousness animation that is at once an insightful observation of society, and a parody of insightful observations of society. It is irony incarnate, living in a state of pure cognitive dissonance that our only possible reaction to its exaggerated and poignant poking at contemporary society is to laugh. We understand it not on an intellectual level, because it makes no sense, but inside of our pattern-recognizing brain, where it matches a version of reality that we see.
It's meant to show how crazy real life is. The drumming baby is the crying babies on public trains and buses. The photographers are the people adoring this monstrosity. Everything else is pretty self-explanatory.
What I can probably get from when the frog on the subway part is that, he probably had mental illness. Only he could see the man being murdered in his own head, but nobody else could. When he went to the doctor, the "doctor"/society treats his illness as if it wasn't real and that his health doesn't matter to him. I think idk

Mostly because AT is a kids show. Whether a lot of its fan-base are older teens and adults is irrelevant. I just think it's amazing that a children's program led me to something as dark as The External World. I know AT has it's dark moments but this is a whole 'nother league.

I suppose the deeper metaphor lies in the fact that all the characters are so wrapped up in their own feelings that they fail to see the world around them. Much like some of the people watching this cartoon.

How many times did you have to watch this to come to these conclusions? If these are even the correct metaphors they are too obtuse for me. It shows up to me like pretentious insanity masquerading as art. "It makes no apparent coherent sense so it's genius." The anti-bandwagon is still a bandwagon unto itself. I listen to bands that don't even exist yet. Needless to say I thought it was shit. I can appreciate the work that went into making it. But it fails on every other level for me.
Plus their recent episode a Glitch is a Glitch in Adventure time was animated like External World and a clip from it was used in the episode. I found the entire episode really fucked up and it was just-- I made my brother leave the room.
This video is best represented by the drummer, to me. He's just beating on a drum to either annoy people or attract attention. There's no overall idea, he just wants attention and for people to interpret his actions as probably having some kind of meaning. But really he's just making senseless, needless noise.

Take on the idea that by us watching this film, we make this external world exist. You, the viewer make each of these characters live out all of their acts hundreds of thousands of times, over and over just by watching it. They have to die, and hurt and murder again and again, every single time. And at the end they cry together getting ready for it to repeat because they understand they have no choice and they're not in control.
....So maybe we're not as in control of our own lives as we think.
God, it's excruciating to see 14-year-olds attempt to interpret and ascribe meaning to something when they have no idea what they're doing. "Yeah, it just shows that life is all messed up and stuff, so ... uh, you should live it to the fullest. Oh yeah, and like don't believe all the BS and stuff 'cause it's totally BS."

God I hated when I was young and was forced to play the piano by parents, I absolutely hated every piano class, it was a big part of depression in my young childhood because piano is a very boring and loathsome thing. Taking so much time just to memorise a symphony that won't even matter? They said piano would help a child grow so much better but I think it is ruining some children's futures by forcing them to do something probably against their will.
there's actually a ton of meaning surrounding each individual act. It's pretty obvious that there is hidden meaning. The neglectful retirement home, the selfish girl, the bad fatherly advice, the man doped up on prescription meds, the kid still feeling his father hitting him, and lots of others I'm forgetting.
I interpret it to mean that the worlds messed up. Not in general but the way people look at it. Each person sees something different. Or feels. Or experiences. Or does. Or types.

This video doesn't tiptoe the line between thought provoking and just being crude, it RUNS back and forth over the line, and that's why I think it's high art. With every scene, you weren't sure whether it had a deeper message, was there for the sake of comedy, or was just pointless absurdity.
Sick, horrible things happen in this world. We are all living our own tragedy. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter to the next person. We are all in our own personal hell. Nobody else can ever understand, they are too busy suffering in their own hell. We can't escape it. We just need to find things, like music in this case, to bring us together, find something common among us, no matter how small it is.

It's basically representing everything in the world; child abuse, racism, depression, drugs, suicide and heaps more! All you people saying it's 'awesome' obviously do not understand it. C'mon this isn't cel or hand drawn animation, most 3d animation you don't do frame by frame. Motion tweens auto-fill the frames between movement, almost all of this could easily use that. And let's not get smart here 60 isn't standard 30 is or at least 15 is standard fps.

If I understand you right, you're saying that because the subject of the videos is not funny, then the people who laugh at it are immature and don't get the tragic of the situation. I would respond that the video is thought to make us laugh. Laughter is more tragic than pathos and crying because it means no pity (see Samuel Beckett's plays). The grotesque of all this makes us realize the world is grotesque, and it's ironically fun.

you could really see the vernon chatman influence alongside o'reilly. the story's interconnections were pretty awesome not to mention the creative visual jokes about racial, cultural and social divides. above all, 'the external world' is hilarious.

Something you'll notice if you're perceptive: At the beginning of the film, the blonde kid has a sort of blue gleam behind his eyes. In the final scene, his eyes are a cold, hollow black.
@Ticktocktomancer The decapitated head linking to an earlier scene is a really superficial link unless it holds some meaning. Does it? If not it's simply a link that makes the audience feel clever if they spot it...
And yes, the cat appears unaffected by the bizarre human world, much as cats mostly are. And yes, the characters are, again superficially, linked by the concert. Can you explain why these things are "deep"?
I do quite like it. Funny, inventive, barbed, but rather scattershot.

Example: The crawling red bars in the early train scene were caused by the decapitated head colliding with the train far later. The world is coherent, but the rules are strange and abstract. The cat knows this; it can navigate the strange geography well (If you're thinking about it like art, the gallery gives you a hint: THE CAT). The characters know this; they lament their tortured existence as they reflect upon it during the piano show. LOOK DEEP

That's what I take from it. I can't speak for the rest of the video, maybe it's just meant to be surreal and it's a reflection of what goes on in David's head.

I like the way you think the piano boy is David O'Reilly, that's really interesting. You see,
6 likesthe piano boy scene started the animation; scattered throughout the whole video then finally, ended it. So it makes sense when you said that's he when he's making videos.
Each time we see the scene, the man's punishment for the boy's mistake get harsher: bare hand, a fish (in my theory, this is a reference OR the punishment was meant to be hurtful and now somewhat disgusting; or just for the comedic side) and a gun (he has a gun but slapped the boy with it, the guns is more likely for threatening). It makes sense when you said the boy was he David himself. He was forcing himself to do better through violence, then he decide to stop it (the boy shoot the man), though it wasn't easy to run away from the mental scars it has caused to him. At the end, he looks at the audience and realize, he practiced because he wanted to show them, to show us something remarkable, not because for the punishment he has been giving to him to stop. And eventually, he plays smoothly, tills, the end.

The title "The External World" makes so much sense to this. This video has a solipsistic view and theme, and to shorten what that means, basically one's self is real and exists while everything else isn't real and is "external". For this man to make such an interesting and deep meaning in this video is just outstanding. This man has my respect for "thinking outside the box".

0 likesif you notice, when the epileptic worm dies, her crying is animated as "tear" and "puddle," but at the boy's recital at the end, she's crying real tears. To me that implies that she was shedding crocodile tears. The fact that she continually grabbed tissues and hurt the tissue box seems to solidify her as being the personification of selfishness. Or at least someone who will harm others just to get what they want.

Depressed Man: Pills are just a way of not dealing with the problem + false happiness. Hospital: Psychiatry. They create disorders for normal human emotion and people buy into it as a way to escape/laziness. Japanese cartoons: How shit can be so messed up but if the characters are cute it's deemed okay. Might be a commentary on increased sexuality at younger ages

I believe this mix is intentional, to bring out mixed reactions from the viewer, and force them to think about each piece, not only as a whole, but individually. Just because your interpretation is that of "random BS," that doesn't make you right. Unless the creator creates a detailed analysis of the work, we will never fully know.

This piece is nice, but I don't see it as a piece with a message or meaning, but it seems like it is trying to be that. It's almost like there is some terribly aligned symbolism with these images and actions, which due to being executed incorrectly, stop the message, if on exists, from being seen clearly, even to those who study such things. I enjoyed it purely for what I saw it as. An interesting little animation.

The boy playing piano in the beginning and his guardian is pretty self explanatory. The overly sexual kids characters speaking a foreign language is representative of the sexual content being presented in young children cartoons, sometimes subliminally. The Frisbee from bad fatherly advice comes back to hit the dad who said "it's just animation, it has no real effects on him." I think almost each sketch has its own meaning.

0 likesC'mon this isn't cel or hand drawn animation, most 3d animation you don't do frame by frame. Motion tweens auto-fill the frames between movement, almost all of this could easily use that. And let's not get smart here 60 isn't standard 30 is or at least 15 is standard fps.

The grotesque of all this makes us realize the world is grotesque, and it's ironically fun.

If not it's simply a link that makes the audience feel clever if they spot it... And yes, the cat appears unaffected by the bizarre human world, much as cats mostly are. And yes, the characters are, again superficially, linked by the concert. Can you explain why these things are "deep"? I do quite like it. Funny, inventive, barbed, but rather scattershot.

That said I don't think my own observations were deep, I am on a character limit after all. A man gets chewed up by the system, a stranger sees this and feels sick to his stomach, he seeks help but instead gets heavily medicated, thus losing his sensitivity to the atrocities around him. I see a condemnation of society in that, but everyone is free to draw their own connections.
