For decades, Country Weather was known, if at all, as the band's name on several psychedelic posters that advertised rock concerts in San Francisco in the 1960s and early '70s, along with better-known performers who were supposed to play venues like Fillmore. Who were they and what happened to them? The answers are on this archival album, which should be welcomed by fans of the San Francisco music scene. Country Weather never entered into a record deal during its existence in 1966-1973 (they re-formed with two original members in 2000), but in 1969 they cut out a five-song demo that earned a local show, and it seems they recorded one of their live shows in the summer of 1970 and did another studio session in 1971. This is heard on this album (released as a vinyl double-LP set that extends slightly above the maximum length of one CD). According to the evidence of the recording, Country Weather was an eclectic outfit with at least two different musical identities, which may have hinted at its eventual breakup. On the one hand, there are pop-oriented songs written by rhythm guitarist and singer Steve Derr, which are heard primarily in a 1971 session that makes up the side of A. Derr reveals the Beatles' influence on songs like "Yes That's Right," and from "Over and Over" it sounds like he's listened to recent Grateful Dead country-rock efforts like American Beauty. The band also echoes spacier aspects of Dead on psychedelic melodies such as "Why Time Is Leaving Me Behind" and the group-composed improvisation of "Fly to New York" (heard in both live and studio versions). In contrast to these styles is the blues-rock approach of lead guitarist Greg Douglass (the only one that later became a significant accolade). He announces his presence on the covers of the Yardbirds ("New York City Blues") and the Blues Project ("Wake Me, Shake Me"), as well as on an extended, swinging version of "Black Mountain Rag." Douglass seems to want to turn Country Weather into cream, and indeed the band's breakup was triggered by his departure and drummer Bill Baron's departure to form a powerful cream-like trio. The emergence of Country Weather after all these years does not represent the discovery of the great lost album of a great lost band from San Francisco in the 1960s.
