Chicago Tribune reviewer Greg Kot was particularly commendable for the album, giving it a 3.5/4 rating, saying "nasty riffs and sticky melodies are everywhere." He also praised multi-instrumentalist John Paul Jones, saying his "mastery of texture, whether on the funky Clavinet for 'Scumbag Blues', classical piano on 'Spinning in Daffodils' or slide guitar for 'Reptile', the band's secret weapon." Steven Hyden of the A.V. Club said the band's album "is not equal to the considerable awesomeness of its ancestors (the aforementioned Led Zeppelin, Nirvana and Queens of the Stone Age); sounds like a second-rate Record Queens Of The Stone Age," and that it "could fit comfortably under Homme's usual banner." However, he praised him for being "hell-bent" and awarded him a B+, adding "The greatest pleasure of them rotten vultures is to hear three extremely gifted players quickly and easily fall together on songs built on simple riffs that sound like they were invented on a lark five minutes earlier."
