I feel like the whole "she just got there because she has an audience" definitely doesn't apply to Dodie. The reason she has an audience in the first place is mainly because of her music, not because she makes challenge videos or vlogs. Most everyone subscribed to Dodie for her music, so the fact that her music is successful is inevitable.
I have a confession. I have notifications on for both doodleodle and doodlevloggle. I see myself more excited seeing a doodlevloggle notification than a doodleodle one.
@Sexy scientist that's fine! Doddlevloggle is great, too. I love this channel because she's so real, whereas on her main channel, it's more of a facade, i feel. But either way, it's still dodie, and you're still supporting her. don't feel guilty, haha!
I remember subscribing to Dodie primarily because of her vlogging* style. I loved her music but her vlogs are what attracted me and I stayed because she did AMAZING covers and original music. I don't think there should be any shame in having an audience that you spent time building up
AzureAnie my point is that the MAJORITY of her followers found her first on doddleoddle. Obviously not everyone found Dodie through her music, but music is what she's known for most, therefore most people came here for her music.

Yep, that's definitely true. Yesterday I heard Dodie's new EP playing at a store in my local mall, and I freaked out! Shows that her music isn't just popular because of her viewers.

This is why you're so loved by so many Dodie, no matter how much attention you get, no matter how many opportunities, you remain so level headed and relatable. There's no way anybody could say "you only got here because you had an audience already", as you say you built this audience yourself, you didn't just get handed it on a plate, you got it through hard work and your beautiful voice and fun personality. P.S. - You absolutely deserve your success. You are something unique, in a sea of conformity. I view you as kind of an anti-artist - everything I like about art, without all the crazy narcissism. Someone blurring the lines between consumer and producer, as you put it awhile back, as well as someone going beyond limitations imposed by the gatekeepers that previously existed in the industry. To me, homegrown artists like you that don't need a massive label to compete are exactly the best type of outcome a platform like YouTube can result in.

hearing that Dodie is becoming bigger and more popular makes me so happy, but hearing her say she will never stop making youtube videos really touches my heart. I love her so much ive watched a lot of youtubers make it big in mainstream media, then break away from youtube and forget it completely. Youtube is such an amazing thing and has helped me in ways i cant even begin to descibe. ill never understand why it has such a negative representation. Her continue her music career but still keep her old roots makes me love her that much more, it thats even possible. I love your EP so much! Personally I have a soft spot for Life Lesson it's simply gorgeous and I want more than anything to hear an extended version of it. Everything about it is already wonderful.
Just wanted to share my thoughts on your EP dodie, first of all, Congratulation, i loved it, thank you very much for giving birth to this little piece of art <3 Second, it was too short, this was my first thought when i listened through it all the way through for the first time, i know it's an EP, but 15 minutes of music was not long enough for me.
Third, despite me wanting a longer album, i LOVED loved loved the length of "life lessons", of course i would want the full version of that song at some point, but the EP-version made it more powerful, made the message so clear and strong and it made me want to be brave and take chances, which is everything you can ask for in a song :)
Dodie, it's such self-aware comments like this - how you recognize how easily famous people could turn into narcissists, being bombarded with all the attention, and the hype train that's inevitably not going to last - as to the girl I was referring to when I said in your Get Ready video last year that my favorite look was the one underneath all the warpaint, who shines out so brightly in spite of it. This really is such a danger, and unfortunately it seems far too many fall victim to it too easily. Everyone knows about the drugs abuse rampant in the music industry, but I think the far greater danger is ultimately this, because it's so much more widespread and so much harder to recognize.
This makes me sososo incredibly happy. I remember discovering you like 2 years ago and I remember feeling like I had discovered this buried treasure and I wanted it all to myself because you were so lovable and talented and I was worried that you would take off as an artist and that my buried treasure wouldn't be mine anymore. And now that you are becoming very very popular; I don't feel that at all. In fact, all I feel is PROUD. We are all very PROUD OF YOU DODIE. Stay humble. Stay you. Having an established audience is a good thing and it doesn't matter where that audience comes from. If it gives you a kickstart then make the best of it. When Beyonce went solo she had an established audience because of Destiny's Child. McBusted had one too because of the separate bands. What about all those people who are related to someone already in an industry, that use that connection to get a foot in the door. It's no different to you, you worked hard to get that audience through YT, some of which is your music, so use it when you can. There's nothing wrong with that, it's not cheating or anything like that, you're just using what you have worked for. :-)

Wait omg. I just rewatched this and the thing you said about feeling like you're cheating. I'm so glad you're being real about that. Because I'm a visual artist/abstract painter and for the longest time I've felt like it's so unfair that it's so easy for some people. Like, so many times I've been like "ugh why can't my youtube channel be doing better?", "why can't I already have an audience?" etc. Just like imagining how many more people would come to my shows. It's awful. Don't really know where I'm going with this but I don't see a lot of people admitting that their already existing audience helps so much with the success of things they create.

I don't watch your videos, but it appeared in my "suggested" for some odd reason, so I watched it and I want to give you some advice!
Firstly, I completely agree with what you said about not being respected/seen as an actual artist because of your Youtube channel. It actually parallels quite well with Donald Glover, who wasn't accepted into the Hip-Hop community (Which supports masculinity and coming from a poor background) as he was seen as a 'nerdy comedian'.
Secondly, I advise that you don't jump at the chance to sign on with any label you can (Though I highly doubt you are). Take your time and look at what label gives you the most creative freedom and doesn't rip you off. Furthermore, you could always go down the route of Chance the Rapper, who has pretty much proven that you don't need a label to be successful in the music industry.
Finally, I hope (if you do read this) that you take away something from this comment. Do what makes you the most happy and make music that makes you happy and I can guarantee you'll be accepted as a musician.

Something I think about is the pentatonix lyric that says, "not saying you should work for free/just don't forget how to love". It's important to acknowledge your talents, to not knock yourself down in an attempt at modesty. The way you know you're not on a bad path is knowing you can always be better; that you always have more to learn. Wisdom isn't knowing everything, it's realizing how little you know. Treat everyone with kindness but work your butt off and the rewards will astound you. And then even if you tank, you'll know you treated everyone with respect and did your best, and that's all you could've asked for.

I've got loads of medical problems and an exhusband that is an ass. My parents have been sick and ...so on. When I found your voice.. And I mean when I watched some of your videos and listened to your lyrics I broke down and cried. I'm not a crier, I usually suck it all in and shove it all down. I loved all of the songs on the EP! I loved the EP. But, and it's a very small "but", and please (please please) don't take this as an insult, because I love your videos and music, and you're such an amazing person, but I didn't like that the songs on the EP were different from the ones on your YouTube. Your YouTube songs are so genuine, you can hear the emotion and it's just you on a piano, kind of playing your heart out. There's something so odd when I think that the songs have just been recorded in a studio

btw dodie i dont know if you noticed, but doddlevloggle has more subscribers now than your main channel less than a year ago. doddleoddle on the other hand has more than doubled both subscribers and views in less than half a year :)
At the beginning of the video I thought "maybe one thing I love about Dodie is that she's on YouTube. She shares her thoughts and that makes her feel so much more like and actual human being than other artists, who sometimes feel like music-machines instead of fellow humans" and then Dodie said she maybe wouldn't be taken seriously and a lot of former Youtuber musicians stopped posting videos because of that. It makes me sad that people who give me the feeling they're actually people instead of music-machines aren't taken seriously, but the machines are. (I'm also fan of a lot of machines by the way, but that's beside the point)

I share your worry of being taken seriously while on YouTube but in the long run I think it is better to be loved for being yourself and the person you are in your videos than have a career with a toned down version of you. Your EP is amazing. You are on the right track, no need to deviate :)

Hey Doddie! I'm a new subscriber so I don't know if you've discussed this before (not that you have to) but I noticed you have acne on the peripheries of your face. I have had for about 5 years straight, and this summer it go much worse (from previously moderate acne). My face was literally covered in cystic pimples with white heads filling in the skin that wasn't covered with cystic pimples. In August I went to my dermatologist and she put me on accutane (i think in the UK they call it Roaccutane), it got worse, i didn't think that was possible. But after 6 weeks on it my skin started to clear up.

Totally relate to what you said about not attaching your happiness to the rise in success! I think one helpful thing is not viewing popularity/hype etc as success but rather a bi product of it. Sustainable/"real" success i think lies in whether you are satisfied with the music you're making or not. If this EP represent where you're at right now as a musician then THAT is real success. Keep doing you in other words!

you have given me the confidence to say my constructive criticism cos lately i have been seeing how much this ep has blown up and been afraid to say anything "negative" but hey if you want it. I WILL GIVE! my constructive criticism on your ep isn't even anything to do with the music (cos i ain't a music person who could criticise properly) but it's with the length of the whole album - aka 10 minutes.
Are the songs beautiful and inspiring? Yes! Did I feel completely happy when I realised I spent 6 pounds on 10 minutes. Not really. Some songs clearly you recorded a lot more of aka life lesson and i didn't mind that being 20 seconds but i feel like you should have had more fully "appropriate" song lengths songs in there for what we paid. I would have loved a few more songs from the channel over the years that you are proud of and wanted to re-record or maybe even another live song personally.

I agree with you Dodie. People seem to overlook the fact that we as an audience hype up these people or celebrities, and that its not entirely their fault they have turned into "narcissists". I'm glad you understand that Dodie.
Most musical artists get their audience when a producer who is already fairly established produces their music for them and has the resources and connection the artist would need. You built your audience over a long time by actively interacting and engaging with them and had to keep it with consistent quality content. If anything, you and other youtuber artists like you deserve more recognition from main stream media.
The mainstream is ever changing, right now they may not accept you. However, in a couple years (as more people do this and your sound is more... you) you might be recognized as someone who changed the game. Keep doing you, thats what people like and can only be good for you. What follows is just bonus!

YouTube is just another form of marketing :) And honestly, at least for people like you Dodie, it is a much more honest form of marketing than the general music industry. Honestly, the idea that your success is not valid is rubbish, especially considering the music industry as it is. The most successful are not "the most successful" (ie, those who succeeded more at being artists or artistic growth). There are so many factors that go into success that whatever.
As an artist who's dream is to someday get more or less where you're going and to create a successful career out of music, I honestly feel this in my soul. At the moment, by biggest concern is sort of trying to create constantly and to create in a way that's good enough for other people to like and to improve, but in the back of my mind the thought has been lurking about what will happen if I do get there. I don't want to be one of those egotistical people who thinks they're entitled to success, and I don't want my happiness to be completely defined by the amount of success I may or may not get. I've made the mistake of having my happiness tied to my success, and I don't want to go back to that ever again.
I don't think it matters how your success happens. Success continues because of a lot of effort, people enjoying your work, and most importantly staying true to yourself and keeping yourself surrounded by people you love who will always be honest with you and be there for you no matter what, as you would be for them.

Hate to ruin the message behind this, but the graph at 4:27 is in the negative, positive quadrant which basically means that while your happiness is going up, time in going down, which though it makes no sense, is pretty beautiful.
The problem with snap chat though is that the story goes away after day. so if we miss a snap then we missed it for good, we cant go back and watch it later when we have time.

The world just has to learn to accept youtube as a way of working then, rather than youtubers having to adapt and quit. It's just a platform, it can be used for sooo many different things from joking around with friends to a creative and/or personal outlet, and it's absolutely something you can work with. Vague metaphor but you can work and have an office in a building, or you can have a wild party in there, doesn't make important stuff that is done in the building less worthy of respect just bc you /could/ do silly, fun things instead.

YouTube has ruined me for a lot of older artists in a sense. Not exactly musically. But I really enjoy the vlogging connection/communication you can get with the younger artists who maintain a very grounded YouTube channel or social feed. Jessie J is a pretty good example, she's got a few old videos up, and her instagram is lovely, not constantly promoting something, or only her at events or photos/videos taken by someone else. It reminds me of why I enjoy an artist, and I end up listening to their songs more often, especially when there's a quick video of them singing. Where others will just promote promote promote and that ends up being such a turnoff (I mean, I like you already, stop trying to sell me your product and give me yourself, your self is great, I probably already bought the product) Anyways I think you're not cheating, you're just a step ahead of other artists because you have already connected with your audience and set up a better feedback loop. Where they have kept themselves apart from their fans and community to a point.

I know exactly what you mean - it's like YouTube appeals to creative people but as soon as they actually do it their creativity is called into question anytime it ventures outside of the YouTube Universe. I have a few small things on my channel (nothing I'm excessively proud of and I have literally like NO subscribers) but I would love to do the whole YouTube thing properly except that I've always been interested in creative things like writing and composing and things like that and I'm worried that if I start YouTube before I prove myself as an artist I'll never be taken seriously as an artist. Such an annoying paradox in the world of creativity

I think some fans are too ready to defend their favourite youtubers and some youtubers need to remind their fans that they are human, make mistakes and should not be worshipped. A lot of yt viewers are younger and more impressionable. This leads some of them to be too loyal to their favourite creator i.e. still supporting youtubers with a history of abuse, or even just aren't nice people, which makes outsiders think poorly of youtube.
People like troye Sivan (who's huge now lol) and Emma Blakey kinda abandoned there YouTube for music but I think career paths are ment to change and evolve !! Compare it to caseys last vlog vid -'it's the constant fist fight with creativity

A lot of YouTubers like to retweet tweets of people saying how great they are, their videos or anything they were involved in - and it's fucking disgusting, tbh. I've seen two people today (Carrie as well) in videos while they put on make up and "complain" or maybe, just talk about what being a youtuber and how they fear not being taken seriously and all,and although I don't mean to diminish anyone's feeling I've spent 8 hours today on a kitchen for minimum wage and serving people. I think some sort of perspective would help these kinds of videos - that you guys get to talk to an audience while getting ready for a rad event and also do what you like and are passionate in life kinda should be enough. Cause it's so hard to get there. (no hate, I swear, just some perspective.)
I really don't like the ep. This is obviously my opinion, so feel free to want to chastise me. I think the songs released as singles would be good. When I listen to an ep or lp, I look for a theme or growth to the album. This did not seem to have any direction. It was like, hey let's slap my good songs together that don't make much sense together thematically. The tone of the order of the songs didn't match up for me. From the first track's calmness to the uppity beat of the second's, I felt uneven. The songs individually are great. I just think you (or whoever advised you) could have put together something that would make me feel whole at the end like good albums do. Obviously, it can only go up from here. I think the trouble is with youtubers, especially those who grow very quickly, it's very easy to let it go to your head. I must say though Dodie when I met you at SITC t didn't feel like I was meeting a celebrity. It felt like I was meeting a friend.

You have every right in the world to be who you are and share who you are. Look at pentatonix! Look at superfruit! They still are taken seriously and highly successful. It's not about the image that people create of you. It's about you proving yourself and showing what you can do. If you're good then no one will ever have a basis on which to judge your personality.
The thing is some youtubers and the same with filmmakers etc they never intended to be youtubers they just wanted the platform to boost their art as a means to gain the attention of mainstream media which is fine. Like with Sammy. I think what's sad is when someone markets themselves as a youtuber then when they make it into the mainstream they forget where they came from. YouTube is a very underrated platform in my opinion. It opens doors for those who don't have amazing contacts/money/labels to push them in the right direction.

I view you as kind of an anti-artist - everything I like about art, without all the crazy narcissism. Someone blurring the lines between consumer and producer, as you put it awhile back, as well as someone going beyond limitations imposed by the gatekeepers that previously existed in the industry. To me, homegrown artists like you that don't need a massive label to compete are exactly the best type of outcome a platform like YouTube can result in.

11 likesDodie, it's such self-aware comments like this - how you recognize how easily famous people could turn into narcissists, being bombarded with all the attention, and the hype train that's inevitably not going to last - as to the girl I was referring to when I said in your Get Ready video last year that my favorite look was the one underneath all the warpaint, who shines out so brightly in spite of it. This really is such a danger, and unfortunately it seems far too many fall victim to it too easily. Everyone knows about the drugs abuse rampant in the music industry, but I think the far greater danger is ultimately this, because it's so much more widespread and so much harder to recognize.

What about all those people who are related to someone already in an industry, that use that connection to get a foot in the door. It's no different to you, you worked hard to get that audience through YT, some of which is your music, so use it when you can. There's nothing wrong with that, it's not cheating or anything like that, you're just using what you have worked for. :-)

Because I'm a visual artist/abstract painter and for the longest time I've felt like it's so unfair that it's so easy for some people. Like, so many times I've been like "ugh why can't my youtube channel be doing better?", "why can't I already have an audience?" etc. Just like imagining how many more people would come to my shows. I don't watch your videos, but it appeared in my "suggested" for some odd reason, so I watched it and I want to give you some advice!
10 likesFirstly, I completely agree with what you said about not being respected/seen as an actual artist because of your Youtube channel. It actually parallels quite well with Donald Glover, who wasn't accepted into the Hip-Hop community (Which supports masculinity and coming from a poor background) as he was seen as a 'nerdy comedian'.
Secondly, I advise that you don't jump at the chance to sign on with any label you can (Though I highly doubt you are). Take your time and look at what label gives you the most creative freedom and doesn't rip you off. Furthermore, you could always go down the route of Chance the Rapper, who has pretty much proven that you don't need a label to be successful in the music industry.
Finally, I hope (if you do read this) that you take away something from this comment. Do what makes you the most happy and make music that makes you happy and I can guarantee you'll be accepted as a musician.

It's important to acknowledge your talents, to not knock yourself down in an attempt at modesty. The way you know you're not on a bad path is knowing you can always be better; that you always have more to learn. Wisdom isn't knowing everything, it's realizing how little you know. Treat everyone with kindness but work your butt off and the rewards will astound you. And then even if you tank, you'll know you treated everyone with respect and did your best, and that's all you could've asked for.

Dig deep and experiment with different things.

I've got loads of medical problems and an exhusband that is an ass. My parents have been sick and ...so on. When I found your voice.. And I mean when I watched some of your videos and listened to your lyrics I broke down and cried. I'm not a crier, I usually suck it all in and shove it all down. Your voice and your words were just so beautiful. It reminded me of why I love music. Music used to be my therapy and somewhere along the way it fell to the wayside. But, and it's a very small "but", and please (please please) don't take this as an insult, because I love your videos and music, and you're such an amazing person, but I didn't like that the songs on the EP were different from the ones on your YouTube. She shares her thoughts and that makes her feel so much more like and actual human being than other artists, who sometimes feel like music-machines instead of fellow humans" and then Dodie said she maybe wouldn't be taken seriously and a lot of former Youtuber musicians stopped posting videos because of that. It makes me sad that people who give me the feeling they're actually people instead of music-machines aren't taken seriously, but the machines are. (I'm also fan of a lot of machines by the way, but that's beside the point)

0 likesHey Doddie! I'm a new subscriber so I don't know if you've discussed this before (not that you have to) but I noticed you have acne on the peripheries of your face. I have had for about 5 years straight, and this summer it go much worse (from previously moderate acne). My face was literally covered in cystic pimples with white heads filling in the skin that wasn't covered with cystic pimples. In August I went to my dermatologist and she put me on accutane (i think in the UK they call it Roaccutane), it got worse, i didn't think that was possible. But after 6 weeks on it my skin started to clear up.
0 likesYours is no where near as bad as mine but I think you would benefit from (ro)accutane. Its almost december now and skin is almost completely clear aside from one pesky pimple near my neck.

I think one helpful thing is not viewing popularity/hype etc as success but rather a bi product of it. 0 likesyou have given me the confidence to say my constructive criticism cos lately i have been seeing how much this ep has blown up and been afraid to say anything "negative" but hey if you want it. I WILL GIVE! my constructive criticism on your ep isn't even anything to do with the music (cos i ain't a music person who could criticise properly) but it's with the length of the whole album - aka 10 minutes.
0 likesAre the songs beautiful and inspiring? Yes! Did I feel completely happy when I realised I spent 6 pounds on 10 minutes. Not really. Some songs clearly you recorded a lot more of aka life lesson and i didn't mind that being 20 seconds but i feel like you should have had more fully "appropriate" song lengths songs in there for what we paid. I would have loved a few more songs from the channel over the years that you are proud of and wanted to re-record or maybe even another live song personally.
I hoped this helped with any eps you write in the future.

You built your audience over a long time by actively interacting and engaging with them and had to keep it with consistent quality content. If anything, you and other youtuber artists like you deserve more recognition from main stream media.

0 likesYouTube is just another form of marketing :) And honestly, at least for people like you Dodie, it is a much more honest form of marketing than the general music industry. Honestly, the idea that your success is not valid is rubbish, especially considering the music industry as it is. The most successful are not "the most successful" (ie, those who succeeded more at being artists or artistic growth). There are so many factors that go into success that whatever.
1 likeAs an artist who's dream is to someday get more or less where you're going and to create a successful career out of music, I honestly feel this in my soul. At the moment, by biggest concern is sort of trying to create constantly and to create in a way that's good enough for other people to like and to improve, but in the back of my mind the thought has been lurking about what will happen if I do get there. I don't want to be one of those egotistical people who thinks they're entitled to success, and I don't want my happiness to be completely defined by the amount of success I may or may not get. I've made the mistake of having my happiness tied to my success, and I don't want to go back to that ever again.

It's just a platform, it can be used for sooo many different things from joking around with friends to a creative and/or personal outlet, and it's absolutely something you can work with. Vague metaphor but you can work and have an office in a building, or you can have a wild party in there, doesn't make important stuff that is done in the building less worthy of respect just bc you /could/ do silly, fun things instead.

0 likesYouTube has ruined me for a lot of older artists in a sense. Not exactly musically. But I really enjoy the vlogging connection/communication you can get with the younger artists who maintain a very grounded YouTube channel or social feed. Jessie J is a pretty good example, she's got a few old videos up, and her instagram is lovely, not constantly promoting something, or only her at events or photos/videos taken by someone else.
0 likesIt reminds me of why I enjoy an artist, and I end up listening to their songs more often, especially when there's a quick video of them singing. Where others will just promote promote promote and that ends up being such a turnoff (I mean, I like you already, stop trying to sell me your product and give me yourself, your self is great, I probably already bought the product)
Anyways I think you're not cheating, you're just a step ahead of other artists because you have already connected with your audience and set up a better feedback loop. Where they have kept themselves apart from their fans and community to a point.

0 likesI think some fans are too ready to defend their favourite youtubers and some youtubers need to remind their fans that they are human, make mistakes and should not be worshipped. A lot of yt viewers are younger and more impressionable. This leads some of them to be too loyal to their favourite creator i.e. still supporting youtubers with a history of abuse, or even just aren't nice people, which makes outsiders think poorly of youtube.

2 likesI really don't like the ep. This is obviously my opinion, so feel free to want to chastise me. I think the songs released as singles would be good. When I listen to an ep or lp, I look for a theme or growth to the album. This did not seem to have any direction. It was like, hey let's slap my good songs together that don't make much sense together thematically. The tone of the order of the songs didn't match up for me. From the first track's calmness to the uppity beat of the second's, I felt uneven. The songs individually are great. I just think you (or whoever advised you) could have put together something that would make me feel whole at the end like good albums do. Obviously, it can only go up from here. I love you and your work, Dodie. Sorry if you feel like you're being attacked, but being in an echochamber isn't good for growth. This is just a fan's feedback xoxo

0 likesThe thing is some youtubers and the same with filmmakers etc they never intended to be youtubers they just wanted the platform to boost their art as a means to gain the attention of mainstream media which is fine. Like with Sammy. I think what's sad is when someone markets themselves as a youtuber then when they make it into the mainstream they forget where they came from. YouTube is a very underrated platform in my opinion. It opens doors for those who don't have amazing contacts/money/labels to push them in the right direction.
